“Wolverine’s ‘1.7 Million Copies’ Image Raises Eyebrows — 5chers: ‘Isn’t It Shrinking Every Day?’”

From our other sites

The story

A thread went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board after someone posted an image claiming a certain title had surpassed 1.7 million copies sold. Commenters quickly pointed out that the number in the image seemed to shrink a little with each repost, fueling suspicion it might be an AI-generated fake. The fact that no official sales figures have been announced even a week after launch is also being read as a telling silence. As is tradition, the thread spiraled into the usual Nintendo-vs-PlayStation fan slap-fight, with plenty of posts comparing the number to sales of past hit titles.

So much for the smear campaign, huh
2AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:29
Metacritic's just been proven to be a totally meaningless metric
Reviewing a game without even buying it is unhinged (lit. "makes your blood vessels pop")
4AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:29
Isn't it shrinking little by little…? 😳

Re: #1
Basically, a game that can only brag about sales numbers instead of whether it's actually fun is 100% trash.
Back when JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle came out, plenty of people responded to "this isn't fun" with "it sold 500k copies!"
Just curious — did the people who said ASB was boring also happen to be part of those 500k buyers?
Does that somehow make it good, then?

Re: #5
You mean the Nintendo fanboys ("Nishi-kun")?
6AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:31
It's shrinking a little every day — at this rate it'll easily dip below a million by the end of the month
8AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:32
Seriously, quit citing sketchy AI-looking images as your "source"
9AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:32
I mean, a full week after launch and still not a single official sales update — take the hint

Nintendo's officially washed up ("owakon") — now they're brawling it out on the stock exchange too

Re: #10
Did the guy who started this thread even buy Wolverine himself?
13AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:33
If anything, isn't that a weak number considering it's basically the only thing aging, single PlayStation die-hards worldwide have to spend money on? Probably below FF16, right?
14AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:34
It started at 2 million — why's it dropping by hundreds of thousands every single day, lol
15AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:34
Onimusha hit a million copies on day one — that probably sold better than this
18AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:35
Playing this makes it obvious why FF16 earned that Metascore of 87
19AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:35
So by next week it'll be an image showing it dropped below a million?
20AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:35
Tomorrow's thread will probably be "1.6 million copies," lol
He got a taste of attention and now he's hooked — go for it, keep it up
22AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:36
There probably won't be an official announcement until the financial results
If it's bad enough, there's a chance no clear numbers ever surface, even at earnings — like with Saros or Death Stranding 2
The types who normally love bragging about numbers are dead silent instead of bragging
You're supposed to read between the lines
25AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:39
Living that unhealthy, day-night-reversed lifestyle, huh…
30AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:42
Hey Nintendo-boy ("buu-chan"), did Fire Emblem sell 1.7 million copies?
33AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:45
Re: #30
Doubtful it'll even hit that cumulatively, lol
79AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:42
Re: #30
Even Fire Emblem Engage sold 2 million, so that's nothing
38AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:50
It just keeps shrinking, lmao
Also, SIE (Sony) probably won't even bother announcing unless it's past 3 million
41AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:54
Re: #38
If it's not close to 6 million the contract gets pulled, so maybe they're holding off until then?
47AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:56
Wasn't it saying 2 million earlier?
Can sales numbers even go down?
52AnonymousSep 23, 2026 10:59
Re: #47
VGChartz numbers genuinely do drop over time, that's just how it works
But real talk, it's probably just not selling well at all
They only put out a hype sales flash like "fast! too fast!" once it clears 1 million, 1.5 million, or 2 million
60AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:09
Why would it even go down in the first place
65AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:15
Re: #60
Could be refunds piling up on Steam
89AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:56
The "angel's share" (a whisky-distilling term for evaporation loss) is way too big here
91AnonymousSep 23, 2026 11:59
Re: #89
Well, babies are angels, so it can't be helped
95AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:21
If the official side won't release numbers, that probably tells you everything
102AnonymousSep 23, 2026 12:29
Re: #95
The pro-PlayStation gaming press ("Goki media") all dropping mysterious sourceless numbers at once means this thing genuinely isn't selling
Classic pattern: about a year later they'll quietly slip out some embarrassingly low official figure

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Talk about real-world game sales figures comes up constantly on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board, and numbers from images with no official backing often take on a life of their own — this time, too, some suspected the source image might be AI-generated. Hardware makers and publishers tend to eagerly announce round-number milestones and strong results, while sitting on unfavorable numbers until financial results are released — and the thread’s “read between the lines on the silence” reaction reflects that well-known industry pattern. Note that replies naming and criticizing specific X (formerly Twitter) accounts, or containing language disparaging individual posters, have been excluded from this article.
