The story

It was reported on November 8 that the four-member boy idol group Aぇ! group is set to make its first appearance on NHK’s 77th Kohaku Uta Gassen (the New Year’s Eve song contest). The members, who came up through the Kansai Johnny’s Jr. ranks, endured more than a decade of training before debuting in May 2024, building their profile through variety-show appearances and a band format in which all four members play instruments. Reactions on 5ch were split: many voiced doubts about the group’s name recognition — “Never heard of them, are they actually popular?” and “I don’t even know their debut single” — while others praised their live vocal skills.

It was learned on the 8th that the four-member boy idol group Aぇ! group is set to make its first appearance on the “77th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen” (airing from 7:20 PM) on New Year’s Eve. This year’s Kohaku theme is “Koete Ikou, Uta to Tomoni” (“Moving Forward, Together With Song”), and Aぇ! group — whose activities go beyond the conventional idea of an idol group — will add color to the year-end spectacle.

Aぇ! group is a four-member unit out of the Kansai Johnny’s Jr. ranks. Most members endured over ten years of hard training before finally debuting in May 2024. Drawing on variety-show skills honed in the Kansai entertainment scene, they’ve won over households nationwide and grown rapidly as idols. But they don’t fit neatly into the “idol” box — they also work as a band, with every member playing an instrument.

I'd rather watch some Osaka night-skyline channel on YouTube than Omiya Park's "Peace-kun" livestream (a local park mascot/webcam) — way more fun.

Never heard of them — are they actually popular?

Re: #5
Were you in prison or something?

Re: #10
Same, never heard of them either. Honestly I don't keep up with Johnny's groups at all anymore.

Re: #10
Same as K-pop idols — nobody outside the fandom knows them.

There's probably scheduling stuff involved, and it's likely already been announced to the relevant parties. There's always some loudmouth every year who blabs about it early.

Anago-san: "Say, Fuguta-kun, looks like Aぇ! group is going to be on Kohaku this year."
Masuo: "A-eh!" (a pun on Masuo's catchphrase from Sazae-san and the group's name)

This is the group with Kusama-san in it, right?

Re: #12
You mean Yayoi-chan?
16AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:09
Thought they'd already be a shoo-in for this. My takeaway: cozy ties with some shady agency.

Re: #1
Still, what a terrible group name. So lame.
26AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:12
Being told they're performing when nobody actually knows their songs…
29AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:16
This might be the first Johnny's group where I don't even know the debut single. Say what you want, but usually at least everyone could sing along to the debut song.
30AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:16
Why is a nobody group with a member who got arrested and indicted getting a slot? Favoritism?
31AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:17
Didn't they cause some kind of scandal? NHK is way too soft on Johnny's.
34AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:18
But he basically did the same thing Kusanagi Tsuyoshi did, right? (referencing the 2009 public-indecency arrest of the former SMAP member)
40AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:23
Forgot the song, but their live performance on CDTV was so good I memorized the group's name instantly. Are they gonna sing that one?
41AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:23
When did NHK lift its ban on Johnny's groups?

Re: #41
They were on Kohaku last year too, you know? A bit late to be asking that.
48AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:27
I'm not saying don't feature former Johnny's talent, but why this group specifically when they haven't even broken through? Nobody knows their songs.
52AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:32
Re: #48
Honestly, nobody knows the songs from any current Johnny's group these days. About the only ones people vaguely recognize by name are the group with the Meguro guy, and the group with the member rumored to be dating Ayase (Haruka) or Arimura (Kasumi).

Re: #48
It's precisely because they're not popular that they're being pushed so hard.

Re: #1
The Kohaku producer must be getting some serious kickbacks.
51AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:28
Sad state of affairs when the most famous member of the group is the one who got arrested.
53AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:32
M!LK has better-looking members and a higher overall level, though. Guess they're getting pressured out of a slot again this year?
55AnonymousNov 9, 2026 00:34
Re: #53
There's no way they're not going to be on.

He was in Dr. Asura playing a resident doctor with this bizarre screechy voice — it went over badly.

Every time I see this name, it reminds me of that late-night adult show from way back called 'A Girl E Girl.'

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Aぇ! group is a four-member unit that came up through the Kansai Johnny’s Jr. ranks and debuted in May 2024 after more than a decade of training. According to the original article, part of the reasoning behind their Kohaku appearance is that they go beyond the typical idol format, with all four members also playing instruments as a band. In the thread, one surprised comment asking “When did NHK lift its ban on Johnny’s talent?” was met with a reply pointing out “They were on Kohaku last year too, weren’t they?” — showing that Johnny’s-affiliated talent appearing on Kohaku isn’t actually new. Much of the skepticism about their name recognition comes from a gap: the group’s name and songs haven’t really caught on through TV music programs, even though their live vocal performances on shows like CDTV have been highly praised. Several comments also questioned the appearance over a member’s arrest record, but these remarks simply point to facts that are already public.
