About

Japan Reacts brings English readers the conversations happening on Japan’s largest anonymous forums. Every day, millions of people in Japan discuss the news, sports, entertainment, and everyday life on message boards like 5channel (5ch). Most of it never reaches the English-speaking world, because it is never translated.

We change that. Our editors select threads that capture how people in Japan are actually reacting to a story — the jokes, the arguments, the surprising consensus — and translate them into natural English, with brief notes where a term or cultural reference needs context. The goal is simple: let you read the Japanese internet the way Japanese readers do.

What we publish

Each article opens with a short summary of the topic, followed by translated comments from the original discussion. We focus on news and society: politics, economics, crime, technology, sports, and the stories the country is talking about. We do not invent opinions or add facts that are not in the source discussion.

How we handle sources

Articles are based on publicly posted, anonymous forum discussions. Posts are quoted for commentary and translation. We remove content that targets private individuals, and we do not publish material intended purely to harass. If you believe a post has been quoted in error or should be removed, please see our Contact page.

Who we are

Japan Reacts is an independent, reader-supported publication. It is a sister project to established Japanese-language aggregation sites and is operated by a small team based in Japan.
