Migrant Surge in the Canary Islands: Emergency Declared, Central Government Asked for Help

From our other sites

The story

On El Hierro, in Spain’s Canary Islands, a surge of migrants arriving by boat from North Africa and elsewhere has prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency by November 7, requesting support from the central government. There were also reports that, as of June 2026, applications to regularize undocumented migrants in Spain topped one million — double what had been expected — and on 5ch (a Japanese discussion board), many posters pointed to a link between that immigration policy and the current surge. Opinion split, though, between those who see the smuggling methods as “organized” and those who countered that migrants are simply choosing boats for financial reasons.

It's basically a colony — our great Japanese Empire should go liberate it!

Well, it's not that kind of island at all — it's the place that got famous for two jumbo jets colliding (the 1977 Tenerife airport disaster, the deadliest in aviation history).

Wasn't Spain still doing that whole 'migrants welcome' thing?

Japan's letting in plenty of legal immigrants too, you know.

The migrant story the media will never air

Apparently people who land in the Canary Islands by boat from North Africa get put on planes with no paperwork and flown straight into mainland Europe.

A flight would only cost €300,

but supposedly they pay €3,000 to come by boat instead, just to hide their identity.

This doesn't feel like ordinary migration — it feels organized, strategic.

Ah, I see — so the trick is to slip in through whichever EU entry point has the loosest controls first. Makes you rethink these big regional economic blocs.

Re: #43
No, that's not it. People who come here by boat obviously don't have passports. They can't get on a plane, so they borrow money and take a boat instead.

Sánchez, unmoving as a mountain (riffing on the old proverb 'as immovable as a mountain,' mocking the PM's inaction)

Wait, France and Spain still have colonies? Zero standing to paint Japan as the villain.

Re: #74
This isn't a colony though — it's been Spanish territory since way back.

Don't they want to improve their own countries? These migrants are so annoying.

Re: #89
Even in Japan, rich people who don't want to pay taxes move overseas. Same thing, right?

Japan should just take in Europe's migrants and put them to work.
If nobody else wants them, why not take them off their hands?
Cheap labor.

Re: #110
They're far more familiar with Europe, Africa, and the Middle East than with Japan — kind of like how Southeast Asia feels close to Japan. It'd be best if things could work without migrant labor at all, but the whole world's struggling with that.

Japan could end up a target too — places like Amami Oshima or Awaji Island.

Re: #141
Illegally landing on Awaji Island sounds like a tall order though.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Canary Islands are a well-known route from North Africa, and El Hierro in particular has seen a growing number of small boats arriving from off the coast of West Africa in recent years. Some posters in the thread linked the surge to the 2026 policy under which applications to regularize undocumented migrants came in at double the expected number, but this wasn’t fully untangled in the thread: that measure applies to people already in the country, a separate issue from what’s driving new arrivals by sea. A few posts also connected this incident to the 2021 mass border crossing at Ceuta, but Ceuta isn’t an island — it’s a Spanish enclave on the North African mainland — making it a geographically distinct case, a correction other posters in the thread pointed out themselves.
