Survey of 10,000 Men Finds Top Worry Is ‘Thinning Hair/Hair Loss’ — 5ch: ‘Here We Go Again With the Hair Talk’

The story

In a survey of 10,000 men aged 30-69 conducted by functional-materials maker Singhee, 50.0% said they had a physical concern, and among them the single biggest worry was “thinning hair/hair loss” (20.0%). “Body shape/weight” (16.7%) and “sleep” (13.9%) followed, with men in their 40s posting the highest rate at 24.2%. On 5ch, stories from men maintaining their hair with treatments like minoxidil and finasteride mingled with voices of those who shaved their heads and walked away from the worry altogether, as opinions split between “you stop caring about looks once you’re older” and “deep down, people instinctively dislike baldness.”

In a survey by Singhee (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), a supplier of functional materials, the top physical concern among men turned out to be “thinning hair/hair loss.”

The survey was conducted online in August among 10,000 men aged 30 to 69. Asked whether they had any physical concerns, 50.0% answered “yes.” The single biggest worry was “thinning hair/hair loss” at 20.0%, followed by “body shape/weight” at 16.7% and “sleep” at 13.9%.

Broken down by age group, those citing “thinning hair/hair loss” made up 19.5% of men in their 30s, 24.2% in their 40s, 21.3% in their 50s, and 15.2% in their 60s.

Unpopular opinion: who cares about thinning hair as long as you're healthy

Once you're past 40, you've got bigger things to worry about than hair — fat, blood vessels, your organs…
Though aside from fat, you won't even notice those unless you get regular full checkups and health screenings…

I'm 48 and still have a full mop of hair, but I came down with a serious illness.
So which was the better deal, really?

Re: #10
Plenty of bald guys get seriously ill too, you know?

That thing's nothing more than a cushion protecting your scalp anyway
45AnonymousNov 6, 2026 12:41
By the way, I tried the stuff from DMM Clinic — the American version with 3x the concentration of Riup (Japan's Rogaine) — and it worked insanely well.
My scalp used to show through, now I've got a normal head of hair growing (and I'm maintaining it)

Me, team skinhead all the way — total victory

Scared of getting injured lol

Once I went skinhead, both the thinning-hair worries and the hassle of maintenance care to slow it down just disappeared

Might as well pick up a part-time gig as a monk while you're at it lol (坊主 means both 'shaved head' and 'Buddhist monk')

I'm in my 50s with an M-shaped receding hairline, but what's actually so bothersome about it?
A lot of men like to look good,
and since hairstyle gets treated as a social marker of being cool,
maybe losing that just feels like a crisis?
For what it's worth, I keep mine super short and prioritize looking clean. I think that's the way to go once you hit your 50s.

"The one who spurned me — never did I pray to Hatsuse's mountain wind to blow this fierce." (a classical waka from the Hyakunin Isshu; people use it as a mnemonic because 'hageshikare' [blow fierce] sounds like 'hage,' meaning bald)

My kid memorized it the exact same way.

There are bald guys who still look cool, you know
That's just unfair
126AnonymousNov 6, 2026 13:06
Re: #88
It's not that they look cool despite being bald — they're cool for reasons that have nothing to do with looks, so the baldness just stops registering.
The real question is whether you can keep building value beyond appearance as you age, or whether you can still take on new things, even small ones, no matter how old you get. If you've got that, looks become secondary.
89AnonymousNov 6, 2026 12:53
The older you get, the more things like your hair and your looks lose their weight as values
Nobody cares about that stuff anymore at that point, so relax
93AnonymousNov 6, 2026 12:53
With thinning hair, as long as the follicles are still alive, most guys can regrow it just by taking Mino & Fina (minoxidil and finasteride).
The generics are dirt cheap, so why isn't everyone taking them?

There's always a certain number of people who stubbornly refuse to touch medication.

Probably because they watched a relative take a ton of drugs near the end of their life, or while fighting cancer, and got it drilled into their head that the medicine is what made things worse.
In reality it was the terminal illness or the cancer, but people like that are convinced it was the drugs' fault.

No money, no fame, and no hair either — now that's despair (´・ω・`)

What burns up and scatters is baldness.
What blooms is hair — but only in dreams.

Going bald makes you look older, and even though your actual ability hasn't changed one bit,
people slap a negative image on you as a person.

Just look at how every TV news anchor has a full head of hair —
that tells you everything you need to know.

I don't know what it is, but instinctively, people just dislike baldness…

I mean, even the super-rich can't do a thing about going bald.
It's humanity's eternal, unsolvable problem.
184AnonymousNov 6, 2026 13:25
Re: #169
Minoxidil is classified as a potent/restricted drug, so rich people won't touch it.
Finasteride is the only one that's approved, but that just slows the progression — you'll still go bald eventually.

I wonder if there's insurance-covered treatment out there for younger women dealing with this.

It's one thing if you're around 50, but starting around 30 has to be rough.
I wish society were a bit more understanding about it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “20.0%” figure from this survey isn’t a share of all 10,000 respondents — it’s the top answer within the 50.0% who said they had a physical concern at all, which works out to roughly one in ten men overall. Reading it as “20% of men worry about thinning hair” tends to overstate the real picture. In the thread, accounts of men maintaining their hair with treatments like minoxidil and finasteride sat right alongside those who chose to shave their heads and step away from the worry entirely — less a matter of which choice is “correct” and more just personal taste. Several commenters also noted that as people get older, their interest in appearance itself tends to fade, making hair-loss worries relatively less significant over time — a shift that the raw survey numbers alone don’t capture.
