GMO CEO Kumagai’s Nuisance Behavior Leaves Neighbors Baffled — 5ch: ‘The More You Dig, The More Dirt Turns Up’

From our other sites

The story

Neighbors have reportedly come forward about nuisance behavior — including deafening helicopter noise and late-night parties — at “GMO Marina & Spa Sajima,” a guesthouse in Sajima, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, owned by GMO Internet Group representative Masatoshi Kumagai (63). A Shukan Bunshun investigation also revealed that on the very night GMO disclosed it had suffered a cyberattack, Kumagai was attending a champagne party in a tuxedo, surrounded by two beautiful women. On 5ch, the thread split between criticism of this behavior and skepticism about the actual severity of the noise and the timing of the reporting, with no clear consensus emerging.

“…My wife has become a nervous wreck from the helicopter noise…”

Sajima, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Along the coast of a marine resort overlooking Sagami Bay stands a conspicuous white building — GMO’s guesthouse, “GMO Marina & Spa Sajima.” It’s a three-story structure, with a living room that opens up in a two-story atrium; beyond its large windows lie an outdoor pool and the blue sea. A pier where boats can be moored sits right alongside it.

Now the pile-on's starting over stuff that has nothing to do with the data leak.
Is some kind of hostile-takeover scheme against the company kicking off here, like that TBS thing?
35AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:20
The more you dig, the more dirt turns up — he's become the media's favorite punching bag.

Re: #35
Guess he's getting dug up, huh.
52AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:28
It's probably money from when the company went public, right? No big deal, lol. He should just do it somewhere that doesn't bother the neighbors.

Re: #52
We won't know that unless Kumagai himself proves it.
56AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:31
Huh? That has nothing to do with the recent hacking incident though.

Re: #56
Both reflect the president's attitude toward running the company.
57AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:31
I get that it's a convenient moment to pile on, but the area around the Sajima facility is nothing but other rich people's vacation homes — there can't be houses close enough to really suffer from helicopter noise or exhaust fumes.
There's an ER hospital near my place that gets helicopters in, and it's just 'oh, a helicopter' — doesn't bother me at all.

Re: #57
I also lived in front of a hospital for a while — when sirens are going off around the clock, you go numb to it.
This guy's blasting noise only about once a month, whenever a helicopter takes off or lands, so for the neighbors it probably feels like unbearable noise each time.
81AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:40
Feels like if you keep poking, stuff just keeps coming out of that president — he's gotta rank near the top for comedy value.

'Not to be trusted': GMO's Kumagai boasted 'In 31 years I've never once said we're making money' → backlash erupts after 'smoking-gun evidence' surfaces

'The column Mr. Kumagai ran in the Yukan Fuji newspaper back in 2003 was titled "Masatoshi Kumagai's Make Money! Profitable Internet!" What's more, if you check the dialogue piece in the publicly available 2004 business report, Kumagai left bullish remarks like "I still feel there's more money to be made"' (web media writer).

In light of this 'smoking-gun evidence,' reactions on X include:

'People who make extreme claims can't be trusted — saying you've never once said it, come on.'
'There's no way a publicly listed company isn't thinking about profit.'
'It's a company, so talking about making money is totally fine. But lying isn't.'

In Yokosuka, Japan Coast Guard, US military, and Self-Defense Force helicopters fly around all the time — you think everyone there's having a nervous breakdown over it?
101AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:43
Re: #90
Depends on the flight path.
It's not like all of Yokosuka is noisy.
But if the route happens to pass right overhead, it's hell.
98AnonymousNov 4, 2026 16:43
Playing around like such a textbook nouveau-riche while claiming he 'never once thought about making money' — that's hilarious, lol.

Why'd this thread suddenly turn into this?

When someone who's been living it up flashy gets caught in a scandal, this is just what happens.

He was completely off everyone's radar until now, but dig even a little and he's covered in dust.

Masatoshi Kumagai is starting to remind me of Hisashi Hieda, lol🤣 (the former Fuji TV chairman who got caught up in his own scandal)

He talks big about his dreams, but he's not exactly stoic about it, lol.
Guess living it up lavishly is the dream.

Helicopters really are way louder than you'd imagine.
Jets are even louder.
Same deal as how biker gangs themselves never notice their own noise.
189AnonymousNov 4, 2026 17:09
Re: #150
The guy himself has probably gone half-deaf from the noise by now. Same as how pachinko parlor regulars are totally fine in that environment — someone who's never set foot in a pachinko parlor would get a headache within minutes of walking in.
163AnonymousNov 4, 2026 17:03
Even talking about the noise, the neighbors must be pretty loaded themselves though.

Re: #163
Precisely because they're already quite rich, having someone flaunt even more wealth right in their face probably rubs them the wrong way.
188AnonymousNov 4, 2026 17:09
Honestly, people online have long been saying GMO is sketchy, but
seeing it only blow up into a big deal now, I guess a lot of people just didn't know?
Given how broadly the company's spread its business, maybe a lot of people really didn't know…

Re: #188
They clawed their way up through stuff like Inter-Q and Dial Q2 (a premium-rate phone service once notorious for adult content lines), then rebranded under the respectable-sounding name 'GMO.' Though if you actually look it up, turns out Inter-Q is still around.

Honestly, just having their HQ in Shibuya is sketchy enough on its own.
Best to just let sleeping dogs lie.

Re: #188
First I'm hearing of it, from this news.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

GMO Internet Group was founded by Masatoshi Kumagai in 1991, growing out of a Dial Q2 phone service business, and is now a publicly listed company with a diversified portfolio. “GMO Marina & Spa Sajima” in Sajima, Yokosuka City, is a company-owned guesthouse in an area said to be lined with other wealthy residents’ vacation homes. The uproar grew because GMO had just disclosed a cyberattack breach shortly before Shukan Bunshun reported that Kumagai attended a champagne party on the very night of that announcement. On the thread, criticism of the nuisance behavior itself coexists with skeptical opinions such as “it’s odd to make a fuss about this now when the neighbors are plenty wealthy themselves” and “it’s a leap to tie the security budget to his management style.” No single consensus emerged. One point readers may easily misread is that the helicopter noise issue and the data-leak incident are, strictly speaking, separate matters — they only got linked and amplified together in coverage because of the distrust provoked by the executive’s conduct.
