Godzilla -0.0 Opening-Day Sales Hit 201% of Its Predecessor — 5ch Users ‘Expose the Trick’

The story

On November 3rd, the opening-day premiere event for the film “Godzilla -0.0” was held in Tokyo, with Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and others taking the stage. Based on figures as of 11 a.m. on opening day, reports spread of a strong 201% showing compared to the previous film “Godzilla -1.0,” and it became a hot topic on 5ch as well. However, in the thread, some pointed out that this 201% figure might just be a “trick” resulting from differing conditions — the previous film opened on a weekday, while this one opened on a national holiday (Culture Day) — and opinions split on whether it should really be read as proof of a huge hit. Meanwhile, on the content side, views were mixed over the kaiju-battle highlights and where the series is headed next.

Re: #1
The last one's opening day was already billed at 265% of Shin Godzilla, right?
And now it's doubled again on top of that — that's wild.
5AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:21
At this rate they're going to keep going until we hit Godzilla -10.0.
7AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:23
Re: #5
If it goes further negative, we'll be back in the pre-war era lol
If they want to keep the postwar setting going, the numbers need to turn positive.
6AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:22
Will the next one go positive? Will it become +1.0?
9AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:23
Personally I liked Minus One better. The King Ghidorah fight felt like déjà vu.
10AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:23
How's it doing in North America?
28AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:33
Re: #10
I think it opens there on the 6th.
12AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:25
A title like "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" sounds like it'd flop anyway — the Minus-series branding works better.
13AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:25
It was incredibly good. Plenty of cool moments and hype moments, and true to the war theme, you walk out at the end feeling genuinely heavy-hearted.
14AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:26
So this is a timeline completely unrelated to Shin Godzilla?
15AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:26
The moment behind the US base where the jet-engine-equipped Shinden casually takes off might've been the peak of this movie.
16AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:26
You could say Minus Zero is styled in an "American" way specifically to sell in the US.

How the "201% of the previous film" number works

The "201% (roughly double)" figure announced at the premiere event for the new film "Godzilla -0.0" isn't the final result for the full day — it's a direct comparison of ticket sales (preliminary figures) at the same time of day, 11 a.m. on opening day.
The previous film, "Godzilla -1.0," opened on a weekday (Friday), whereas this new film, "Godzilla -0.0," opened on a national holiday (Culture Day). That gave it a huge head start from the morning onward, producing the striking 2x comparison.

Don't be fooled — see Re: #17.

Re: #17
Most films open on a Friday anyway.

Re: #17
Well yeah, it was a Friday, but wasn't Nov 3 — the previous film's release date — also a holiday?
18AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:27
I think this is Japan's answer to Oppenheimer. I was struck that they'd go this far in confronting America with it.
19AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:28
This is one you really have to see in a theater.
20AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:28
Starting on an awkward day like a Tuesday — how's the first-weekend box office even going to turn out?
23AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:29
Re: #20
Well, it is a holiday though.
21AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:28
I watched the previous one and found myself thinking — was Japanese acting always this hammy?
24AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:29
I watched the one before that online — there was so much dead air it was boring even at double speed.
26AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:30
I always pictured Ryunosuke Kamiki as a child actor or an anime voice actor, but he's apparently a fully grown, legit actor now.
39AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:39
Re: #26
Really? In the previous one, Kamiki and Hamabe felt so green I gave up watching early on.
29AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:33
Feels like Avengers is about the only blockbuster left for the rest of the year.
34AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:36
Re: #29
There's Dune too.
63AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:48
Re: #29
There's also the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, directed by Fincher.
32AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:35
So how much did Chiikawa end up grossing in total anyway? It's probably the top earner of the year, right?
50AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:43
Re: #32
It's just passed 18.6 billion yen. For reference, Chiikawa's opening day was 990 million yen. This Godzilla seems to be a bit over 500 million yen — doesn't look like it's hit 600 million. Both came bundled with 3D merch.
42AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:40
Film 1 → a near-happy ending that left room for a happy-ending vibe
Film 2 → a clearly bad ending

Honestly there was no real need to make a second film. Why did they make this thing?
If the third one doesn't land on a happy or near-happy ending, I'm not going to be satisfied!
48AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:42
Re: #42
The director's fully fired up to do a third one. With box office this good, they'll probably go for it.
51AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:43
Going to see it next month. Though I'm disappointed to hear there's less actual Godzilla screen time.
52AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:44
Re: #51
Ghidorah's in it so much he's basically the lead.
54AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:45
Re: #51
Rumor has it Godzilla barely shows up and it's mostly family meetings lol.
61AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:47
Re: #51
Ghidorah gets way more screen time than Godzilla, yet there's almost no Ghidorah merch at the movie goods counters — Toho really dropped the ball on that one.
53AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:44
In "My Godzilla" (fan nickname for "Godzilla -1.0") they kept saying Japan had no fighter planes left, but the trailer shows a bunch of Zeros — where'd those come from?

The US military gave them to him.

Next Godzilla film

64AnonymousNov 4, 2026 00:49
The previous film was a hit and picked up extra prestige from winning the Academy Award for Visual Effects, so of course this one's pulling a good crowd from day one. Question is how long that holds up.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Opening-day “X% of the previous film” figures are a common promotional tactic, but as the thread pointed out, morning turnout varies depending on whether the release date falls on a weekday or a holiday. The previous film, “Godzilla -1.0,” opened on a Friday, while this one, “Godzilla -0.0,” opened on a national holiday — Culture Day — so the caution that a simple same-time-of-day comparison can be misleading is a point that keeps coming up in real box-office reporting too. The thread also noted that the previous film’s profile boost from winning the Academy Award for Visual Effects likely helped fuel this film’s strong opening-day turnout. At the same time, opinions were split on how much screen time the kaiju battles got and on the direction of the script, and there was no consensus on whether a further sequel is even warranted.
