The story

The new Godzilla film opened in theaters on November 3, and 5ch erupted with mixed reactions from opening day. While some praised the monster rampage scenes and the polish of the visuals, comments insisting “we don’t need the human drama” kept popping up, with posters recalling how the previous film was poorly rated domestically but got reassessed after winning awards overseas. The thread also buzzed with talk unrelated to the film’s actual quality — reports that it was shot using Japan’s first IMAX cameras, complaints that trailers and YouTube thumbnails amounted to de facto spoilers, and posts suspecting the CG looked AI-generated.

・The monster scenes are the best
・Pretty gory
・It messes with you emotionally
3AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:34
Wait, didn't Godzilla not actually die at the end of the last one?
5AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:37
The last one got bad reviews too, until it won an award.
6AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:38
🦘<Forget the human drama, just give us more destruction, wallaby!
26AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:15
Re: #6
Are you the type who skips the dragging drama scenes and fast-forwards straight to the part where it's buck naked and going bang! bang!? (sounds like a Marin-style viewing habit)
9AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:41
We seriously don't need the human drama.
11AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:42
The Godzilla parts of the last one were great
though the ending was bad
but the human parts were truly awful
foreigners just didn't get that, so it still won an award
12AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:45
Even as a monster movie, the last one was so full of contrived plot convenience it got ridiculous
Is this one even worse than that?
55AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:41
Re: #12
It's way beyond just plot convenience — none of the main characters' motivations make any sense at all
13AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:46
Is there even a tokusatsu movie that isn't full of plot convenience?
14AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:48
So it's like an AV (adult video)
Nobody wants the half-baked drama scenes, just the 'good parts'
15AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:57
In America the human drama went over well and got high ratings
The rare low score was because of a lack of monster action
16AnonymousNov 3, 2026 21:58
Re: #6
There was tons of destruction
You'll cry if you see Marin (the character)

Re: #25
She's leveled up to her 'second form' with full double eyelids now
66AnonymousNov 3, 2026 23:00
Re: #25
The mean-looking eyes and all — her face is honestly like Godzilla's
17AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:04
Honestly, there's no way to beat Hollywood's current Godzilla no matter what they do
This is just something Japanese otaku who lost to America are using as a club to shout 'Minus One was the best! We beat America!'
21AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:12
This should really be called 'King Ghidorah -0.0'
Godzilla's just a side character
24AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:14
Re: #21
You haven't even seen it, lol
Then tell me, which Godzilla movie actually has Godzilla as the main character?
22AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:12
Well, ratings come down to your own personal impression — there are a lot of weird people among Japanese audiences
30AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:21
No matter who makes it
it always boils down to 'there's a monster → let's have it fight Godzilla'
there's no other pattern
that's why Godzilla movies are boring

But I did think it was nice that, having owned that limitation, they put real effort into the camera angles and cutting and direction
31AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:22
A fan of Saho Sayashi (former Morning Musume idol) came storming in saying it was great, but—
33AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:23
Honestly, the director alone makes it not worth watching
35AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:24
The YouTube thumbnails are already such blatant spoilers it's funny
They just show up in your feed so there's nothing you can do about it
YouTubers racing to be first to upload are such a nuisance
36AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:25
This kind of movie seems like you could still enjoy it even with 100% spoilers
37AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:25
I saw the last one in IMAX, and for a Japanese film the sound actually made good use of IMAX's deep bass
This time they shot it on Japan's first-ever IMAX cameras
38AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:27
Re: #37
The last one was an 'IMAX scam' though
It was just a regular Cinemascope screening, lol
It got slammed pretty hard for that back then
39AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:28
Say what you will, but Takashi Yamazaki is great
He's pushed Japanese film visuals forward by leaps and bounds
40AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:29
Without spoilers most people wouldn't even go see movies in the first place
Unless you're the otaku type who's going no matter what anyway
41AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:30
The last shot (the sea at sunset) looked so real it was amazing
42AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:31
lol the only thing actually trending is the ridiculously huge popcorn bucket
43AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:31
From the commercial, the CG looks better than the last one… that's not AI, right?
44AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:32
Probably because people with any sense (or who don't want to get flamed) still can't post spoilers yet
45AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:33
The shot of the motorcycle riding looked a bit like AI-generated footage
52AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:40
What was even so great about the train scene in the last one?
56AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:41
Re: #52
The idea and the visual effects were amazing for a monster movie, come on
62AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:53
The last one was decent enough, but the acting was over-the-top as always
Nonstop crying, wailing, screaming, and shouting — so noisy
The usual flaws of Japanese films haven't changed
65AnonymousNov 3, 2026 22:58
Re: #62
Wow
You've been brainwashed by something, lol
I bet you haven't watched any world cinema

Background and key points of this discussion

The new film causing buzz this time appears to be a follow-up to 2023’s “Godzilla -1.0.” When the previous film was released domestically, opinions on its human-drama portions were divided, but after it won the Academy Award for Visual Effects overseas, its reputation at home was reassessed — a point echoed in the thread, where posters note that “the last one got bad reviews too, until it won an award.” The main point of contention in the discussion was how to weigh “monster scenes” against “human drama” in a kaiju film: some backed sticking with the previous film’s formula, while others argued the human portions should be trimmed in favor of more monster action. Separately, suspicions that some of the CG was AI-generated, and complaints that trailers and thumbnails amounted to de facto spoilers, developed as side topics apart from the film’s actual quality — and nothing in the thread confirms whether AI was actually used.
