The story
A PC version of the “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” remake has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Geha”) board. Using a technique called static recompilation, someone converted the Switch 2 ROM into a natively running build that supports ultrawide displays and high frame rates — and reportedly has more graphics options than the official Switch 2 version. Reports that it runs at 40-60fps even on a GTX 1060-class GPU drew attention to just how lightweight it is, but opinion in the thread split over whether this counts as a legitimate mod enhancement or simply an extension of piracy (“ware,” i.e. illegal copying). Many commenters also noted an ironic reversal: posters who once mocked the PS5’s piracy problems were now defending this one.

Whoa
It's recompiled to run natively, so it's buttery smooth — you don't need that kind of horsepower lol
That's so unfair
Or are the people here not even gamers to begin with?
You guys mocked the PS5 for this exact thing and now you're seething lol
This isn't piracy, it's a ROM enhancement
Think of it more as a mod
I don't think they're condoning it though?
( ´,_ゝ`)プッ (a smug "pfft" face)
I criticized piracy with the PS5 too
I'm a real gamer, after all
Got any evidence for that?
I'm not even using a handle name, so how am I supposed to prove that?
If Nintendo actually sues for damages, somehow Nintendo gets the blame instead
That's some messed-up ethics for people who call themselves gamers
GTA6's probably getting cracked on day one too at this rate

Static recompilation is officially Google-approved after all
It's absurd that this has better quality-of-life than the original
You guys should watch what you post
Eeeeeek, I'm scared of getting arrested, oh noooo lmaoooooo
You don't even use an app like Chmate (a popular 5ch mobile browser)?
Nah, I don't use one
I looked into it, and the hoops you have to jump through to play this legally on PC are insane 🥺
First you have to buy a Switch 2 and crack it open, then buy Ocarina of Time too and dump the files yourself 😮
And of course you need a gaming PC on top of that. The cost-to-benefit ratio is terrible 🥺
99.99% of normal people would be better off just playing it on the Switch 2 as-is ☺
I mean, a fully bundled version with the game included — and a virus thrown in for good measure — is probably going to end up floating around online anyway 🥺
Here, go ahead and use this for now
Relying on someone else to handle it is just lame lol
This kind of low-class behavior from the PSW crowd (a PlayStation-focused 5ch board) is probably part of why PlayStation has declined in Japan
Classic case of bias — "we're fine, they're the bad guys"
But now that it's Switch, they do a total 180 — it's hilarious
That boomerang came back with way too much precision
All I remember were comments like "foreigners are out of their minds" though
There were also guys saying "if you have a PS you don't need a Switch," though
The fact that people are saying you can tweak the FPS tells you everything already, and yeah, I already know how things actually stand
Three times the Switch 2's specs is roughly a 2070-3060, so that's totally manageable
Honestly the PS5 pretty much meets that already
In PC terms that's an 8-year-old graphics card, so it's not as demanding as people make it out to be
Though it's light on desktop but somewhat heavier on laptops, so it's not exactly something the average person can just casually jump into
The PS fanboys who were happy to see the Switch get pirated can't really complain now, can they
Background and Key Points of This Debate
The so-called PC version of “Ocarina of Time” is actually the Switch 2 ROM converted into a native x86 binary using a technique called static recompilation. Unlike a traditional emulator that interprets code on the fly, this approach reportedly lets even underpowered PCs hit high frame rates. As comment 35 notes, playing it legally still requires buying the console and the game and dumping the ROM files yourself — it’s not something just anyone can casually do. On the other hand, if a finished binary leaks online, people could play it without ever buying anything, which is why the thread was split over whether to call it an “enhancement mod” or “a gateway to piracy.” Underlying the debate is a recurring pattern on the Hardware & Industry (“Geha”) board: Switch fans who once mocked the PS5’s piracy problems ended up defending this one, while PlayStation fans flipped to calling it out instead — a familiar role-reversal. Some posters even shared a link to Nintendo’s contact form, signaling a push for the company to actually respond.
