PS5 Japan Price of ¥55,000 Sparks Debate After Claim It ‘Should Cost ¥100,000 at Real Exchange Rates’

From our other sites

The story

A post on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board claiming that the PS5’s Japanese price of ¥55,000 is a steal — arguing that if converted at the real exchange rate it should actually cost close to ¥100,000, and that not buying it out of ignorance is a waste — sparked heated discussion. In response, posters pushed back from multiple angles, offering concrete calculations of electricity costs, pointing to the thin software lineup, and noting that opinions on the console’s design are split. Data was also cited showing domestic PS5 sales fell from 1.016 million units to 683,000 units over the past year, making it a talking point that demand can’t be explained by price alone.

Are Japanese people stupid or something?
4AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:01
The PS5 chews through electricity like crazy, you know.
29AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:23
Re: #4
Yeah, fair point.
Also I just can't picture myself buying ¥50,000 worth of new games on top of that.

Re: #4
Rough guide to PS5 electricity costs (per hour)

This is a rough estimate based on the standard rate from the National Household Electrical Appliance Fair Trade Council (calculated at about ¥31/kWh).
While gaming (approx. 220W): about ¥6.8/hour
While watching video (approx. 80W): about ¥2.5/hour
If you game solidly for 2 hours every day, the monthly (30-day) electricity cost comes out to roughly ¥400–450.

Guess even a broke pig like you can't afford that lol lol

Add the disc drive and it's ¥65,000 — pricier than the Switch 2.
All it's got is crap like Wolverine.
And it's just a giant phone-sized brick that gets in the way, don't need it.
6AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:01
The question is: would anyone actually pay money for a worthless object?
8AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:03
Even if it's cheap, you can't buy it without knowing the firmware version on the display unit in store.
9AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:04
This isn't a place for non-Japanese people.
10AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:05
The thread title itself even says it's the censored/region-locked version.

Re: #10
Just crack the overseas version.
You won't get online, but let's be honest, you wouldn't stick with it without mods anyway.
11AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:05
What are you even gonna do with that garbage console?
Pornhub and AI chatbots?
14AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:10
Japanese people will buy something stupidly expensive like an iPhone if they actually want it,
but they won't buy stuff they don't need.
15AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:10
A textbook case of 'cheap and crappy.'
16AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:11
Re: #15
Is that really where things stand —
is Nintendo getting crushed in their earnings?
95AnonymousNov 7, 2026 15:25
Re: #16
Sony having good earnings isn't a reason to buy a PS5.
For a game console, if the games aren't fun, none of that matters.
17AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:12
Re: #13
It's wild that there isn't a single million-seller.
Even counting digital sales, Monster Hunter is probably the only title clearing a million — what a hellish console lineup.
22AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:18
That's just proof it's being treated as junk nobody wants.

Finally catching on, Re: #1?
23AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:18
If your reason TO buy it is the price, don't.
If your reason NOT to buy it is the price, go ahead and buy it.
25AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:19
Re: #23
That's a legendary quote about entertainment right there.
30AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:25
Re: #23
Right? That's exactly why I bought a PS5 Pro.
24AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:19
Buy this 'Null Station' (a jab at PlayStation meaning there's nothing to play) and you'll lose your mind from how empty it is.
I already said my goodbyes to PlayStation back with the Vita.
26AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:19
Honestly the PS5 Digital Edition is absurdly cheap.
Guess people won't realize it until the price goes up.
27AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:20
It's just that people won't pay ¥50,000 for something they don't need.
28AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:23
Isn't it weird that even with an effective ¥17,980 price cut, it still hasn't sold 500,000 units?
31AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:25
It's like saying, 'This Hermès bag normally retails for ¥1,000,000, but right now it's ¥500,000 — only an idiot wouldn't buy it.'
32AnonymousNov 7, 2026 13:26
A trap version where only the censored/region-locked edition works lmaooooo
75AnonymousNov 7, 2026 14:35
If the yen had bounced back to around 120, Xbox would've just quietly taken over the shelf space and everyone would've lived in peace 🙄
88AnonymousNov 7, 2026 14:57
Re: #75
Struggling with Japanese?
77AnonymousNov 7, 2026 14:37
What games are you actually stuck without, that you can't play on the Switch 2 you already own?
79AnonymousNov 7, 2026 14:44
Re: #77
Probably PC-exclusive games…
Stuff like Java Minecraft or the original Touhou games will never come to consoles.
82AnonymousNov 7, 2026 14:52
Re: #76
PS5 sales from November two years ago through October last year were 1.016 million units, while sales from last November through this October were 683,000 units.
Sales did spike the month the Japan-market Digital Edition launched, but looking at the yearly average, sales have dropped quite a bit.
90AnonymousNov 7, 2026 15:06
You'd be happier spending that ¥50,000 on good food.
97AnonymousNov 7, 2026 15:26
Re: #90
I mean, a game console's probably still the better call, though swapping PC parts works too.
91AnonymousNov 7, 2026 15:11
If you actually wanted one, you'd have bought it already.
Sure, some people are holding off because there's no game they actually want yet,
and some probably saw the price drop coming.
92AnonymousNov 7, 2026 15:14
Re: #91
Exactly.
If you already bought the console, a price cut doesn't mean a damn thing to you now.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Since its launch, the PS5’s price in Japan has been revised several times, and the thread itself brings up this history — a ‘hike to ¥80,000’ and an ‘effective ¥17,980 price cut.’ Simply converting the console’s U.S. dollar list price into yen at the current exchange rate makes the ¥55,000 price tag look like a bargain, but actual retail prices are set region by region based on local purchasing power, tariffs, and logistics costs, so arguing for a ‘true price’ from exchange-rate math alone is misleading. The sales trend cited in the thread — a drop from 1.016 million units the previous year to 683,000 units — suggests the thin software lineup may be driving down purchase motivation more directly than the price changes themselves. Sony’s strong earnings and domestic hardware sales trends are separate issues, and conflating the two appears to be one reason the discussion talks past itself.
