Ocarina of Time Remake Lets You Save Only One File — 5ch Users: “What’s the Point?”

From our other sites

The story

Shortly after Nintendo released the new version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, a thread griping about the game sprang up on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. The biggest complaint was that players can only create one save file, compared to three in the original — many called it a step backward. Others pointed out that dashing can only be done by holding down the A button, and that there’s no way to leave notes on the field map. Some pushed back, though, arguing “Breath of the Wild has the same system” and “a screenshot is good enough,” splitting the thread over what counts as a real inconvenience versus just nitpicking.

What people said

Can only dash by holding A down the whole time
Can't mark anything on the map
3AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:57
Only one save file
78AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:29
Re: #3
Just use the Zelda Notes app
You can rewatch cutscenes and refight bosses with it anyway
And what's the point of keeping a backup save file?
The original had multiple save slots for when several people share one copy

Re: #78
It's way too inconvenient when you just want to start completely over and can't
5AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:59
Wait, you were raging all night and the only complaint you could come up with is THAT?
7AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:00
Re: #5
✕ A legitimate complaint
○ Just nitpicking
10AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:02
Re: #5
It's pretty inconvenient actually
There are rocks you can only break after progressing the story, and without marking you just forget about them
15AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:05
Oh right, there was another one
– Can't change the camera rotation speed

I want it faster, y'know?
19AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:10
Re: #15
It's not a competitive game
Can't you just turn to face whatever direction you want to look at?
69AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:19
Re: #15
No, you can change the camera speed, it's in the options menu
17AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:07
Re: #10
At least carry a pen and paper
And take screenshots or whatever
18AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:09
Re: #17
Then add a marking feature
They said in an interview they wanted Breath of the Wild players to feel right at home with this — no marking feature means they only did half the job
21AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:12
Of course there's gonna be SOME complaint lol
28AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:21
Re: #21
It's got a Metascore of 96
Not a single blemish allowed
24AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:18
Re: #14
Dead serious
Well, you can make multiple saves if you split across accounts, but
I don't get why they cut it down from 3 in the original…
30AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:22
Re: #24
Seriously?
If there's some hidden "Master Quest"-style mode, I'd want separate saves for that
This one's a pretty big deal for me personally
31AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:24
Ocarina of Time main thread: activity level 80
Elden Ring main thread: activity level 630

lol
33AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:26
Re: #31
Guess Zelda's just not that popular
34AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:26
They probably made it one save because you can just split by account, but
if every game does that you lose track of which account has which save, so I wish they'd avoid it as much as possible
Worst case you could even mix up accounts and delete the wrong one
37AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:29
Re: #34
Weren't you the one saying one save was plenty enough back in the day?
36AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:29
Re: #18
The map's smaller than BotW's anyway, screenshots are plenty
Even in BotW I screenshotted more than I used map pins — are you even playing the game?

More than that, my real complaint is that you keep carrying Saria's Ocarina even after getting the Ocarina of Time
You never use it, and if they wanted to beef up that event they should've followed the manga version instead
43AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:37
Re: #36
Not enough
If I have to keep checking screenshots one by one, just let me mark it on the map from the start
49AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:43
Zelda Notes support came out way too fast
That's a full-on spoiler fest
51AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:52
Re: #49
Yeah, it even tells you the locations and spawn conditions (like needing nighttime or a certain bug) for the Gold Skulltulas, plus Heart Piece locations and treasure chest locations lol
54AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:53
Huh? Holding the button down is a normal control scheme
What's the actual problem here?
56AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:59
Re: #54
If you hold A to dash you can't move the camera
ZL swings the camera around behind you, but Link crouching at the same time is annoying too
Guess you wouldn't know if you've never actually played it
58AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:04
Have you even played it?
Item switching is a pain
60AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:05
Re: #58
Yep, it's the BotW-style system again, as expected
No matter how much people hate this system they just force it through anyway
65AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:12
Wait, so you can just jump normally this time?
Wasn't the N64 version designed without free jumping because it wouldn't feel "Link-like"?
72AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:22
Re: #65
You can now jump anytime with the X button
Though jumping while dashing doesn't give you any extra distance or anything
73AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:22
The autosave triggers way too often, that's kind of an issue honestly
80AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:32
If you don't own a Pro Controller, how are you even supposed to move the camera while dashing?
82AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:36
Re: #80
If you plug the Joy-Cons into the included grip, you can use the back buttons
If you're holding them bare, just recall the rapid-reload bowgun skills you trained from the first Monster Hunter all the way through Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G ("Dos")
84AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:43
Re: #82
Did the grip that comes with the console actually have back buttons?
I never use it so I had no idea
86AnonymousNov 5, 2026 13:48
Re: #84
The included one doesn't have them
The separately-sold charging grip does
89AnonymousNov 5, 2026 14:45
( ゚A゚ ) ← This is the face Link has been making the entire time
94AnonymousNov 5, 2026 16:14
Re: #89
Cute (´・ω・`) (a pouty kaomoji face)
92AnonymousNov 5, 2026 15:31
Can't you do first-person view? I feel like the 3DS version let you
93AnonymousNov 5, 2026 15:43
Re: #92
Doesn't seem like it's in this one, huh
97AnonymousNov 5, 2026 16:18
Re: #92
Didn't know that
Next time let's try first-person view in stereoscopic 3D

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

At the center of this discussion is the new version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, originally released in 1998, whose original release supported three save files to accommodate multiple players sharing one copy. The apparent reduction to a single save slot in the new version is believed to reflect a shift toward managing save data per Nintendo Switch account, and opinions are split among users who want to keep separate playthroughs apart. Reactions to the dash controls and the lack of a map note-taking feature were also divided, with some praising the changes carried over from the previous title, Breath of the Wild, and others hoping for controls closer to the original. It’s also worth noting that some posters pointed out the camera rotation speed actually can be adjusted in the options menu, suggesting some of the complaints raised in the thread may not have been properly verified beforehand.
