The story

Unconfirmed reports from sites like sumahodigest.com claim that Sony’s next-gen console, the “PS6” (development codename Orion), will offer ray-tracing performance up to 12 times that of the current PS5, closing in on the RTX 5090. Combined with PSSR upscaling, overall rendering performance is said to reach up to 4 times that of the PS5. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, users questioned the credibility of the leak itself and voiced concerns about the console’s price, with the discussion spiraling into a more fundamental debate: “Does ray tracing actually matter?”

Unconfirmed reports have surfaced claiming that Sony’s next-generation console, the “PS6,” will deliver ray-tracing performance 8 to 12 times that of the current PS5. The new console, reportedly codenamed Orion, is also said to see a major boost in traditional rasterization performance, and when combined with PSSR upscaling, is claimed to achieve rendering performance equivalent to up to 4 times that of the PS5.

The key specs being reported are as follows.

Codename: Orion

Price staying exactly the same at ¥225,000!!!

Enough with these 'fantasy leak' (lol) threads already

Bet they'll sell it for ¥199,980

Company's gonna go under — this joke again (classic recurring 5ch gag)

PS5's ray tracing was fake ray tracing to begin with, it's garbage

It says "UP TO," remember (´・ω・`)

Every single time it's just fantasy multiplied by fantasy
11AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:14
AMD doesn't even have that kind of tech to begin with, what are you even talking about?
12AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:14
Before AI upscaling became the hot topic this got a lot of buzz
but you don't hear much anymore about whether ray tracing is actually worth it
13AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:14
Barely anyone's going to say 'I'll buy it' because of this
15AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:18
Ban threads sourced from Sumaho Digest already
16AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:18
PS6 is just too amazing
Switch 2 is already a loser
18AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:19
It'll be outdated tech in no time anyway
By the time PS6 actually launches we'll be on the RTX 6000 series
PC being permanently on the bleeding edge never changes
19AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:20
I turn ray tracing off a lot of the time anyway
though I do use it for mood-heavy games like Resident Evil
20AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:20
Rivaling the 5090… that's talking about a million-yen graphics card
21AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:20
Do we even need ray tracing in the first place?
Resolution and polygon counts hit a wall for pushing graphics further, so the industry's just force-feeding us ray tracing as the next big thing — are there actually users out there who want that?

Re: #21
I'm in the 'don't need it' camp
We should stop chasing graphics fidelity already and instead evolve toward PS5-level visuals with a rock-solid 60fps, absolutely zero frame drops, and lightning-fast load times

Re: #21
Kind of like how digital cameras hit a performance ceiling and started bolting on a bunch of useless effects and features

Re: #21
Then again, making gorgeous graphics with baked lighting has also hit its limits
22AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:20
I wonder
do the people spewing all this fantasy stuff actually hate Sony?
They're clearly setting themselves up to enjoy the disappointment when the real specs get announced, right?
24AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:21
Wait, the 5090's ray tracing is only 12x the PS5's? That's all?
25AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:21
A console whose only winning points exist purely in people's imagination
30AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:25
Being able to buy it for ¥85,000 — I just can't wait
31AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:25
If they could actually build an APU with that kind of performance, the new Radeon ought to be mowing down GeForce too, don't you think…
32AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:26
This is just going to make the 'Trash-witch' (a mocking nickname for the Switch) look even more like trash
33AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:26
PS5's ray tracing is like 0.2x anyway, right?
35AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:28
The overseas version is ¥300,000, the Japanese version is ¥150,000
36AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:28
Maybe next-gen consoles should just be frozen until this chip price surge calms down already
38AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:29
A sad little feature that got blown away and killed off by DLSS5
39AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:30
Don't need ray tracing
can't even tell the difference
52AnonymousNov 4, 2026 08:34
Next-gen consoles, especially the AMD-based ones, are already locked in to being a totally forgettable, sandwiched-in generation thanks to DLSS5
They're permanently guaranteed to be inferior to PC
Seriously, they should freeze development until they can match that level of neural rendering
89AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:24
Re: #52
The compute units running DLSS5 use fp8, but RDNA4 in the RX9000 series has that too, so they can catch up
The real question is what happens once things move on to fp4 and features show up that only run on that
Since fp4 has lower precision, there'll probably be more vendor-specific implementations popping up
67AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:04
So, what are the launch titles?
69AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:05
Re: #67
Isn't 'Wolverine PS6 Edition' gonna be the one taking over the world?
81AnonymousNov 4, 2026 09:47
Q: Did the gaming industry change dramatically after the 5090 launched?

A: No. Not much impact at all.
85AnonymousNov 4, 2026 10:20
Re: #81
What it can actually do is the same as the rest of the 5000 series
it just gets you a higher frame rate, that's about it
Heavy VRAM usage is a separate issue
But if you don't want to compromise on any of that, you'd go with the 5090, right

Background and Key Points of This Topic

It’s worth noting that these figures are all based on anonymous, unconfirmed leaks and are not an official announcement from Sony. The PS5’s ray tracing is reportedly a simplified implementation applied only to specific things like on-screen reflections, not full ray tracing — a point the thread itself raised by calling it “fake ray tracing.” In recent years, graphical improvements from higher resolution and polygon counts have plateaued, which is part of why the industry as a whole has shifted its focus toward ray tracing and AI upscaling (PSSR, DLSS, FSR). With semiconductor prices continuing to climb, how high next-gen console prices will actually go remains unknown until an official announcement, so numbers like the “¥225,000” floated in the thread are purely sarcastic jabs. Whether ray tracing’s benefits are even noticeable depends on factors like screen size and eyesight, so it’s not unusual for opinions to be split on whether it’s necessary at all.
