“God of War: Laufey” Delayed — 5ch: “Does It Even Have a Reason to Exist Without Kratos?”

The story

SIE Santa Monica Studio has announced a delay to “Laufey,” the latest entry in the “God of War” series. The title had already split opinion since its reveal, since it drops series mainstay Kratos as the protagonist. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, posters were divided over the reason for the delay — some pointed to weak preorder numbers, while others saw it as a move to avoid clashing with other major titles releasing around the same time. Many also raised the more fundamental question of whether there’s even demand for a sequel without Kratos.

This game self-sabotaged its own hype — cutscene after cutscene turning into a movie night starring a middle-aged woman who isn't even good-looking.
5AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:43
So the PS5's "last hope," the old-lady game, got delayed after all?
6AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:44
Not much of an impact really
preorders were already a disaster to begin with

if it had been delayed into next year, it would've tied into the disc-drop debate and actually gotten interesting
7AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:45
Everyone's too busy bashing the Ocarina of Time remake ("negakyan" — negative-campaigning) right now to bother defending this one
Eh, nobody really cares about this game anyway
9AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:48
Delaying right after preorders opened kind of tells you everything lol
This is the classic "nobody preordered it" kind of delay
10AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:50
Don't worry, they said GOW will still get a physical release too — but will it actually make the new date?
11AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:50
Blackout Boom 2 (jab at another title's abrupt scene transitions)
Granny 20 (this game itself, mocked for its older female lead)
PC Bank Heist (jab at a game seen as overly "politically correct")
Space Baldy (jab at a sci-fi title with a bald protagonist)

and that's already all that's left of the "Four Heavenly Kings"…
12AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:51
Compared to Fable, the graphics look like they're two generations behind
and on top of that it's "just" an action game
13AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:53
Some idiot: "I don't care at all!" (/ω・\) *peeks*
(/ω・\) *peeks* (/ω・\) *peeks*
14AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:54
Why does it feel like both this and The Last of Us keep wanting to change the one thing they shouldn't touch?
15AnonymousNov 5, 2026 07:59
Were preorders just that bad? Or was it the classic combo of "suddenly told to add PSSR support" plus "it doesn't run right"?
16AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:00
It was overlapping a bit with the new Metroid anyway, and I think Duskblood (FromSoftware's upcoming title) is launching around then too, so in a way this actually worked out fine
17AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:02
A three-month delay, huh
Meanwhile Duskblood doesn't even have a projected delay length yet lol
18AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:03
It's only barely still recognizable as "God of War" because of Kratos — drop even that and it's just not gonna fly
Though I'm sure the gameplay itself will be fun as always

Re: #18
I won't spell it out, but the "bald" element (Kratos's shaved head) was beloved too
Now that charm point is gone, and this time being a PS exclusive is dragging it down even further
It's not even the PS brand's peak era anymore, so its survival is genuinely in question
19AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:05
Well, we've still got Persona, Romancing SaGa, and Atelier at least — that's a relief
22AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:19
Watch it get delayed again and end up launching alongside the PS6
23AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:26
Is there even any point to a God of War without Kratos?
24AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:31
GTA6 in November, Hakugin in December, Mugendai and Forza 6 in January, Fable in February — way too much all releasing back to back
26AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:35
The protagonist being Kratos's wife…
is there seriously anyone who wants to play that? lol
27AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:35
Same issue as Witcher 4 — the whole creative direction feels off
28AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:38
Oh, this is the "20-minute granny" game? (nickname from its 20-minute gameplay reveal starring an older female lead)
I completely forgot the actual title lol
31AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:48
I'm a fan of the series so I'll pick it up eventually, but if Kratos isn't the lead, I'll just wait for a price drop
32AnonymousNov 5, 2026 08:54
"Space Baldy" is the one that actually needs to announce something
61AnonymousNov 5, 2026 10:59
Nintendo's finally dropping their real heavy-hitter, Pokémon Fuuha, next year, and that's seriously irritating
Once GTA6 is out, are we basically stuck pinning all our hopes on the PS6 after that?
65AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:02
Re: #61
Sorry, but there's no way a PS6 is happening
The console's price alone is already a sticking point
but bigger than that is the question of who's even going to develop games for it
Development costs keep climbing, and if a game flops it can sink a whole studio in one shot
66AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:04
Re: #65
Have you lost your mind?
85AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:24
Re: #65
PS6 will obviously come out eventually
it'd honestly be more surprising if it didn't
62AnonymousNov 5, 2026 10:59
Nobody's actually polishing anything
same goes for Space Baldy
ship it, it flops, and people get laid off
so of course developers will delay it as long as humanly possible
since you still get paid the whole time
64AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:02
Re: #62
That's wishful thinking talking, not reality
77AnonymousNov 5, 2026 11:49
It's getting absolutely roasted lol
79AnonymousNov 5, 2026 12:02
Re: #77
Honestly sounds plausible lol

Re: #77
First Wolverine, now this — Sony's games just keep stinking up the joint

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “God of War” series has always been built around protagonist Kratos, and sequels that drop a franchise’s signature character tend to spark debate even in past series entries. The thread split into two camps over the reason for the delay: one that saw it as “weak demand reflected in poor preorders,” and another that read it as “a move to avoid clashing with the cluster of major titles (GTA6, Forza, etc.) releasing around 2026.” Neither side backed its claim with confirmed figures, so both remain speculation. Readers should be careful not to jump to the easy conclusion that a delay automatically signals bad news — strategic delays meant to avoid release-date congestion aren’t unusual in the industry. That said, skepticism toward continuing a series without its signature character isn’t baseless either; similar cases in the past have genuinely affected sales.
