The story
Sony’s latest earnings report was announced as strong overall, but during the same period, its in-house titles “Marathon,” “Saros,” and various Marvel-related projects were all reported to be struggling as major releases. Alongside this, the company saw a wave of business contractions, including mass layoffs, studio closures, the end of PS3 and PS Vita services, and the shutdown of SNS features. On 5ch’s gaming hardware board (Geha), PS5 hardware sales fell 41% year-over-year, sparking a clash between those who argued “that’s only natural given the roughly 100 million units already out there” and those who countered “hardware sales are still rough compared to Switch 2’s roughly 25 million units.” The debate eventually devolved into personal attacks.
What people said
■ Marathon, Saros, and Marvel titles all bombed
■ Mass layoffs & studio closures
■ PlayStation sales drop to their lowest in 26 years
■ Physical game sales discontinued
■ Movies pulled
■ PS3 and Vita services ended
■ SNS features shut down
■ State of Play is bombing hard
■ Falling out with Hideo Kojima
■ Ended up running what's basically a pirated-games storefront
Wasn't there also that thing where family accounts got created without permission?
PS5's install base is near 100 million, Switch 2's is only around 25 million — is that really something to celebrate?
Lol, making excuses
People love setting the bar absurdly high for Nintendo
even though, by company size alone, they're actually on the smaller side
If you've got no rebuttal, you lose
Rebuttal to what, exactly? Fine, let's just say it's something to celebrate then
There, I win
Lol, a moral victory
Yep, all you've got left is personal attacks
I win too
I'm not making personal attacks
Do you even know what a personal attack is?
"I only make 2 million yen a year, so even buying a 60,000-yen console is a big deal for me!"
The fact that the install base isn't bigger is on Nintendo, not an excuse for anyone else
Exactly
"the hardware isn't widespread yet" isn't a valid excuse
If PlayStation fandom weren't basically a religion, PS fanboys ('puresute' zealots) wouldn't be called the nastiest of all console fanbases by everyone else
Re: #13
Isn't the reason PS fanboys are 'winning' simply that Nintendo deliberately hasn't rolled out hardware in the Chinese market?
Given they're intentionally skipping out on China, the world's biggest population, that gap is plenty small already
Did you switch IDs? (5ch assigns posters a rotating daily ID, so changing it mid-thread looks like dodging accountability)
especially since it's free if you've got a smartphone
Well, it is the Geha board (5ch's console-wars subforum)
the numbers will obviously show up, so I'm looking forward to it
But you're not gonna admit it even when the earnings numbers come out, are you
this fandom has evolved in a seriously creepy direction
Is it a joke that a Geha poster is the one saying this?
I just play my PS5 Pro every day like a normal person, though?
Genshin Impact down 37% year-over-year
Honkai: Star Rail down 43%
Zenless Zone Zero down 51%
Wolverine → 2.3 million
Saros → 300,000
Marathon → 210,000
Sony: "Our games are selling great!!" ←lol, delusional and alone on this one
#1 GTA6
#2 eFootball
#3 Genshin Impact
#4 Fortnite
#5 Apex Legends
Looking at this, I bet the kids who were playing Fortnite and Apex on PS4 have all bought PS5s
The top spots are stacked with legit heavy-hitters
Background and key points of this debate
It’s not unusual for a game company’s earnings to show both “individual titles underperforming” and “strong overall results” at the same time. PlayStation’s profits come not just from big new releases but from a combination of revenue streams — subscription income from existing titles, royalties from third-party games, and margins on hardware sales — so overall earnings can still grow even when flagship titles flop. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over how to judge the year-over-year decline in hardware sales. Posters argued past each other over whether it’s fair to compare the PS5, which has reached roughly 100 million units sold, against the still-new Switch 2 (roughly 25 million units) using the same “X% decline” metric. Quotes also circulated claiming that executives at third-party publishers like Square Enix, Capcom, Nihon Falcom, and Koei Tecmo had commented on weak PS5 sales and strong performance for Switch 2 titles, but none of these came with sources or context, so their accuracy can’t be confirmed in this article.
