What Gaming Era Got You Most Pumped? 5ch Says ‘The Shock of Mario 64’

From our other sites

The story

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board asked users with 30+ years of gaming experience, “What era personally got you the most excited?” Since the Famicom’s 1983 debut, home consoles have gone through roughly 40 years of generational shifts — from 8-bit machines to the Super Famicom, the PlayStation and Sega Saturn, the Nintendo 64, the Wii, and the 3DS. Many in the thread championed the mid-90s period when the PS1, Saturn, and N64 all stood side by side, while others pointed to the Famicom-era frenzy, the Wii’s Virtual Console, or the 3DS’s glasses-free 3D. Just what counts as the “golden age” turned out to depend heavily on which generation the respondent grew up in.

This one's for people who actually lived through the dawn of the Famicom in real time —
What era got you most excited about gaming?
3AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:12
Probably the N64 era, honestly
That's when there was the most room for games to blow your mind
Though to be fair, I'd say we're still in a golden age even now
5AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:12
An Ultraseven crew member
Mama Rumiko
6AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:13
Probably the Famicom era
Then after that, when the PS and Saturn came out
7AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:13
The shock of Mario 64 was incredible
PS1 also felt like a huge leap into the future
8AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:13
Around the Super Famicom / PS era (that "jooon" startup chime)
9AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:13
Probably the Saturn and PS era.
Japan still had some energy back then, so there were a lot of game companies too.
10AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:14
The 3DS, for me
I'm a sucker for glasses-free 3D

Though the Wii's hard to give up too
Online play turned Mario Kart into a whole new beast
The Virtual Console got me hyped too — having it added via a system update made it even better

Yeah
11AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:14
Probably around the switch from the MZ to the X1 (old Sharp home computers)
Going from character-cell graphics to pixel-level drawing, plus color on top of that
That hit harder than the jump to polygons ever did
12AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:14
The first time I played F-Zero and Final Fantasy IV on the Super Famicom.
13AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:15
When the number of simultaneous on-screen colors jumped from 8 to 256
16AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:16
Probably the Mega CD era. Game Arts' Silpheed felt like getting an early peek at next-gen games (PS/Saturn) while everyone else was still stuck on the Super Famicom. It really was an "out-of-place artifact" — tech that felt impossibly ahead of its time.
17AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:16
Right around when the Wii launched.
The Virtual Console was huge.

Also the Game Boy, I guess.
18AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:16
From Virtua Fighter through the Mario 64 era
It was such an intense time, I thought about games morning, noon, and night
19AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:17
Probably the mid-Famicom era
Once Namco and Hudson jumped in and third-party titles exploded, I couldn't stop getting excited
Also the DS and Wii
21AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:17
Back when you had to take the cartridge out of its box every single time you wanted to play Famicom
23AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:18
From Virtua Racing through about Virtua Fighter 3
24AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:18
Probably elementary through middle school
Famicom, Game Boy, Super Famicom, PC Engine, Neo Geo, PS, Saturn
25AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:18
Right before the PS2 launched
I don't know why, but the hype was on another level
26AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:18
The first time I played Super Mario Bros. on the Famicom
The first time I played Resident Evil on PS1
PaRappa the Rapper too, probably
And the time I tried running Ocarina of Time on a PC emulator but my specs were too weak for it to work right
27AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:19
Super Famicom, for me
I was also super hyped for the PS2 right up until launch
Looking back I can't even remember what I was so excited about — probably just riding on the PS1's reputation
28AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:19
The era of Sega and Taito's big motion-ride arcade cabinets
Playing After Burner on the R360, or Le Mans with its spinning cabinet, or Galaxy Force with that cockpit-riding feel
Man, I wanted one of those cabinets so bad
29AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:19
Ultima Online
Around 2000? I was completely hooked.
30AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:19
Probably around when early info on Final Fantasy started showing up in Famimaga (a Japanese gaming magazine) before the Super Famicom even launched
I remember getting hyped just hearing that new titles were coming out simultaneously for both the SFC and the original FC
31AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:19
From before the N64 launched (back when magazines were calling it the "Ultra Famicom") through the Mario 64 era
32AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:20
Probably when I saw a test-play demo of Virtua Fighter 2
34AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:20
Probably the texture mapping in the arcade version of Ridge Racer. Back then it genuinely looked like live-action footage.
35AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:20
Probably the Super Famicom and PS2 era
36AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:21
Probably back when I was playing Genpei Toumaden at the arcade
37AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:21
Probably when I was chatting in Phantasy Star Online about the behind-the-scenes story of Go Nagano and the mobile suit designs in Zeta Gundam
40AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:22
Honestly, probably from the PS/Saturn/N64 era through the PS2/Dreamcast era
I was excited about something gaming-related every single day
41AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:22
The Famicom Disk System and the PS1, for me
Everything else was just so-so
80AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:36
Ocarina of Time was the most exciting for me
The game holds up on its own merits, so I'm sure the remake is plenty fun too, but nothing can top how groundbreaking that experience felt at the time
99AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:45
The Wii, maybe? There were just so many games coming out, it was exciting
103AnonymousNov 7, 2026 20:47
Re: #99
Yeah, the Wii's motion-control games really were groundbreaking
Feels like that would still be a hit even today

Background and key points of the discussion

Since the Famicom’s 1983 debut, home consoles have moved through generation after generation: the Super Famicom (1990), the PlayStation and Sega Saturn (1994), the Nintendo 64 (1996), the Wii (2006), and the 3DS (2011). Where opinion in the thread split was over exactly when to place the “golden age” — many pointed to the mid-90s transition from 16-bit machines into the 32-bit/64-bit generation, while others championed the Famicom-era frenzy or the broader, more casual audience that the Wii and its successors brought in. This likely reflects the fact that one’s “most exciting era” tends to track less with actual hardware advances than with whatever period happened to overlap with being a kid or student. Later in the thread there was also an off-topic spat about the running of gaming-affiliate (“geha”) sites, but since it had little bearing on the original question, it’s been left out of this article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “I want to ask people with 30+ years of gaming experience: what era personally got you the most excited?.”
