The story
A post on 5ch’s Hello! Project board compiled grip strength measurement results for Morning Musume members. Yuge topped the chart at 30.7kg, while Suzuki came in last at 19.5kg, and the thread kept growing as posters added real numbers for current ANGERME members and past idols like Michishige Sayumi and Ishida Atai. Opinions split over whether grip strength scales with body size and how much the numbers can shift depending on the device or measuring method, and the discussion even brought up the benchmark figures used to flag early-stage frailty risk.
Yuge 30.7, Ishikawa 26.6, Inoue 25.7, Yasuda 25.4, Sakurai 24.0
Yamazaki 23.7, Okamura 23.5, Nonaka 22.9, Oda 20.9, Sugihara 20.4, Suzuki 19.5

What people said
Is there no one like Takase here?
What happened to Takase?
The latest issue of Dmaga (forgot the number)
Rairii apparently said she was 7kg a few years back — that's gotta be wrong, so surely they'll remeasure her?
She could beat an average guy at arm wrestling and was smart on top of it — really made me realize some people in this world just have it all…
Haga's around 40, judo-club level
Fukumura's a prodigy pulling over 90
Couldn't even beat Ikuta at arm wrestling
Ikuta had her left hand braced on the table, but Necchin was holding a mic at the time, so that's hardly fair
Makino might too
Maria was 22kg back in middle school
Even some absurdly huge pro wrestlers only pull around 60
My max is 86, but that doesn't mean I could beat a wrestler in a grip contest
That's because grip strength comes down to tendon strength
The unit's gotta be tons
That's not even impressive
Matsumoto: R23.6 L21.2
Tamenaga: R24.3 L22.5
Kawana: R27.5 L26.7
Hashisako: R26.1 L24.1
Ise: R21.8 L21.5
Kawamura: R24.8 L27.7
Kasahara: R27.9 L26.7
Jokura: R22.3 L18.2
Sasa: R29.9 L30.9
Takeuchi: R33.1 L33.3
So, I brought this up during today's MC —
…how much grip strength does everyone have? lol
Going off my memory from middle school,
I think I only had about 12 in my right hand and 10 in my left.
Is that weak? It is, right?
I don't know what the average is,
but what about you all!?
Then again, my memory might be off,
maybe it was more like 8…
Anyway, I basically have zero grip strength…
It's never actually caused me any trouble though, so it's fine, lol
see you, ayumin

See, this is why grip strength isn't that big a deal
If you're just living a normal life, having weak grip is actually the default
It won't improve unless you're gripping something as part of your daily routine
• Men: under 28kg
• Women: under 18kg

• Data has reportedly shown that dropping below 26kg for men or 18kg for women is linked to higher risk compared to those above average.
That's about the average for a 2nd-year middle school boy
For an adult man, that's frail territory
According to surveys by the Japan Sports Agency (New Physical Fitness Test), the average grip strength by gender for 2nd-year middle schoolers (age 13) is as follows:
• Boys (age 13): approx. 30.2kg–30.5kg (roughly 30.21kg–30.52kg depending on the survey year)
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
Grip strength is normally used as a fitness benchmark across all age groups in things like the Japan Sports Agency’s New Physical Fitness Test, and as mentioned above, under 28kg for men and under 18kg for women are the reference values marking the yellow-light stage of pre-frailty (the step before needing nursing care). In the thread, there was a common assumption that a bigger body means a stronger grip, but posters pointed out that it actually comes down heavily to forearm and tendon strength, noting that even large-bodied pro wrestlers can end up around average. There was also a moment centered on the average grip strength of 2nd-year middle schoolers, where a gap opened up between a post citing concrete survey data and a more gut-feeling assumption, highlighting the disconnect between perceived fitness levels and actual statistics.
