In NVIDIA's sample there are two approaches — handling it in real time, or decompressing/converting it at load time. The latter would work on current hardware too.

When it comes to compression, storage capacities went up and users stopped complaining, so they weren't as eager about it as before and the tech stalled out

Images, video, and audio are usually already compressed at the format level — JPEG, MPEG, and so on — so compressing them further didn't do much

I think this "Neural whatever" thing from NVIDIA is a technology that uses AI to change the actual data storage format into something completely different from the conventional one, to cut down on size
This is probably AMD's version of that

I mean, if it has to be PS5-backward-compatible, this tech can't be used with PS5 software, so it's not like the PS6 automatically becomes cheaper

If they cut the PS6's storage or memory below the PS5's, you'd only be able to install one or two big PS5 games, or things would stop running from lack of VRAM

Well, it's still an emerging technology, so if they're releasing the PS6 within 5 years, I personally think they shouldn't make the memory or storage just barely better than the PS5's
