Is the Zelda console actually a good deal?

Re: #10
It looks cool, but it's not really a good deal.
12AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:46
Did the N64 even sell well in the US?
15AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:47
Re: #12
It sold about as well as the SNES.
It was a successful console in the US market.

Re: #12
5.5 million units in Japan vs. 20 million in North America.
It sold way more than in Japan, even with Japan's love of Final Fantasy.

Honestly, most Zelda fans these days never even played the N64 version.
If you did, you're an old man now.

Re: #18
Yeah, and looking at the crowd in line, they all look way too young to remember the N64 era.
19AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:49
Buying a plain black Switch 2 isn't even an option anymore.
We're past that — now it's all about which collab edition to get.

Re: #19
They should've at least slapped a logo on the Splatoon set too.
30AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:52
I can't stop feeling smug about this — thought Americans only cared about photorealistic gun-blazing shooters.

Re: #30
Maybe even Americans (slang: "amerip") are finally getting sick of nonstop shoot-'em-ups…

Re: #30
Westerners are tired too.
Their reality is basically GTA already, so they probably want a fantasy adventure to unwind with in their games.

Re: #15
Re: #16
Seriously?
Guess I really don't get what Americans are into.

Re: #36
A bunch of games that were huge in America came out on it.
Over there it's not like Japan, where FF and Dragon Quest dominate.
Even the casual-friendly games that did well on PlayStation [in Japan] didn't sell nearly as much over there.
38AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:56
With the N64 you had games like Mario 64 and Zelda that genuinely changed gaming history.
If anything, Japan was the one being weird about it.

Re: #38
Back when 2D was the default and games that just turned 2D sprites into polygons were being called "3D games," true full 3D was just too big a leap for people.
41AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:57
What percentage of the people in line are just scalpers?
43AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:58
Re: #41
Nintendo's already announced they're going to keep mass-producing the Zelda console, so it's probably people who actually want one rather than scalpers.
And there's no sign of the usual rent-a-homeless-person line fillers either.
45AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:58
I bought one too, and the design is seriously great.
After seeing this, the standard model just looks boring.
49AnonymousNov 1, 2026 12:59
Re: #45
Is the color printing (or whatever the finish is) actually durable?
Will it hold up over time?
57AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:02
Found my old N64 box — think it'll sell for much?
58AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:03
Re: #57
Nah, it won't sell for much.
63AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:06
Re: #57
You can get a whole used console, box included, for under 10,000 yen.
So you can imagine what just the box alone is worth.
62AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:06
Honestly, the dock has a special finish too and it's pretty nice.
65AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:06
Re: #62
The case looks great.
66AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:07
Re: #62
Nice.

Might just stick it in a plastic display case.
81AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:20
Re: #62
Classy.
This is craftsmanship right here.
71AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:10
What about this one?
73AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:11
Re: #71
Way too lame.
Why'd they go with yellow 😭
74AnonymousNov 1, 2026 13:12
Re: #71
If I had to pick between that and the Zelda one,
I'm 100% confident I'd go with Zelda.

Re: #71
It'd be a bit better without that creepy face.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The lines in question formed for the Zelda-themed limited edition of the Nintendo Switch 2, and whether buyers are driven by scalping or genuine demand remains unresolved in the thread. As pointed out in the discussion, the Nintendo 64 historically sold far better in North America than in Japan, and Nintendo has built up a solid fan base in the North American market over the years. That said, whether the crowd in line truly consists of people “too young to remember the N64 era” is only a guess based on appearances — the thread offers no actual data on buyers’ ages. While North America tends to favor Western-style titles like FPS games, console-born action-adventure series like Zelda have also maintained consistent popularity there, so genre preference alone doesn’t fully explain the scale of this surge in popularity.
