The story

A theatrical film for “Bocchi the Rock!” — titled “Bocchi the Rock! the Movie: Footprints of the Stars” — has been announced for a 2027 release. This time the lead isn’t the usual Hitori Gotoh, but Seika, the older sister of Kessoku Band’s Nijika Ijichi. Billed as a side-story depicting the sisters’ “parting” ten years ago, the film will be directed by Shin Wakabayashi, with character designs by Yukiko Horiguchi. On 5ch, discussion tangled together several threads at once: confusion over the new protagonist, a split over screenwriter Erika Yoshida — who reportedly once called the original manga’s expression “noise” — and comparisons to the Chainsaw Man movie.

It has been confirmed that a theatrical film, “Bocchi the Rock! the Movie: Footprints of the Stars,” is in production for the anime “Bocchi the Rock!” — based on Aki Hamaji’s four-panel manga serialized in “Manga Time Kirara MAX” (Houbunsha) — and will open in 2027. The film centers on Nijika Ijichi’s older sister, Seika, telling a “dream” story that begins with the Ijichi sisters’ “parting” ten years ago. An all-star staff has assembled for the project, with Shin Wakabayashi directing and Yukiko Horiguchi handling character design.

“Bocchi the Rock!” is a music manga that has been running since 2018. The story follows Hitori Gotoh, a solitary girl who loves the guitar, as she unexpectedly ends up joining Kessoku Band, led by Nijika Ijichi. The TV anime aired from October to December 2022 and became a hit. A second season has also been announced.

Is the screenwriter still that same person (you know who)?
3AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:31
So does this mean there's no season 2?

Re: #3
Can't you even read Re: #1?

So Bocchi-chan ('lonely girl') has finally become Houchi-chan ('neglected girl').
7AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:33
Guess the genius director's too busy with Frieren to bother with Bocchi the Rock, huh.
12AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:35
Re: #7
Frieren's getting a new director for season 2 too, you know.
8AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:33
Lately it's nothing but movie adaptations since they're profitable, huh.
9AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:33
Come on, everyone — strike the Komaneci pose (Beat Takeshi's crotch-chop gesture) with your best stoned-out face! Join in, Mr. President, the innkeeper's wife, the young master, big sis, the section chief, grandma, everyone together! "Yes! Ehobakkon!"

They're probably going to pull some horrifyingly excessive bonus-merch sales tactics…

Re: #13
So true. It's pathetic.
14AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:35
Re: #2

Are they seriously still using the screenwriter who called the original manga content "noise"?
37AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:45
Re: #27

Even if your own manga gets called "noise," if you're a working professional you've got no choice but to give a diplomatically safe public comment.
Akira Toriyama did the same thing with the live-action Dragon Ball movie.

It's already past its prime, so turning some side-story into a movie is reckless.
No matter how big the anime-movie boom is lately, I smell a box-office bomb.
17AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:37
Way too slow.
Anime that blow up out of nowhere always end up like this — missing their window.
18AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:37
If Bocchi-chan barely shows up, I'm not that interested.
20AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:38
I watched the recap compilation, but I probably won't go see this one.
21AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:38
I read through 2-3 episodes, but I felt zero appeal from the girl who's supposedly the lead.

Re: #21
Kirara-brand anime get fleshed out a ton in the adaptation, but the source manga is always thin on story and not that interesting.
36AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:43
Re: #21
Well, that's just personal taste.
Though honestly, that protagonist's personality is just plain weird.
22AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:38
It all comes down to whether it can beat the Reze arc.
Though for the TV anime, Bocchi the Rock took the win.
23AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:39
Both Bocchi and Frieren succeeded because director Keiichiro Saito was a genius.
I can't see the success continuing after cutting Saito out.
25AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:39
Re: #14
Honestly, the ecchi stuff really is just noise.
28AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:41
Re: #25
The worst part is throwing out after-the-fact excuses like "we put them in swimsuits because you guys sexualize them."
30AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:41
Re: #1
So the screenwriter is still Erika Yoshida?
Even after calling the original's expression "noise" and "sexual consumption."

The author said: "For this movie, screenwriter Erika Yoshida fleshed out that story in a wonderful way."

If you don't like it, just don't watch it, lol.

Season 2 info dropped too.
Maaan, I've got nothing but high hopes for our super in-demand screenwriter.
Can't wait for season 2 either.
52AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:53
Bocchi season 1 was October 2022.
The movie's next year, so that's 5 years already.
Season 2 will be even further out.
Girls Band Cry keeps losing members one after another — BanG Dream is the only one still standing.
Amid everyone saying "band anime never hits big," it's ironic that one way or another, BanG Dream is the only one that's actually succeeded.

Re: #52

Well, BanG Dream's MyGO!!!!! is popular in China, so…
54AnonymousNov 1, 2026 22:55
Still, picking Horiguchi for character design was a pretty bold choice.
The animation looks like it's been stepped up for a more general audience compared to the TV series.

The recent art.
Doesn't feel dated at all.

I think a big part of why Bocchi the Rock clicked was the anime-exclusive direction and visual gimmicks.

A story about Seika and Nijika's past sounds kind of dark, or, I dunno… are they going for the tearjerker-drama route?

Re: #72
Trying a different flavor from the TV version is a gamble as a technique, but I think it could be interesting, and I'd actually like to see it.
As an example, there's the comedic Tamako Market versus the serious Tamako Love Story — that one worked really well.

But even so, the screenwriter still worries me.
Feels like they might slap some weird coloring on it…

Background and Talking Points

The source manga began serialization in Houbunsha’s “Manga Time Kirara MAX” in 2018, and the TV anime caught fire when it aired from October to December 2022. This new film isn’t a continuation of Hitori Gotoh and the gang’s ongoing story — it’s positioned as a side-story centered on Seika, the older sister who has already left Kessoku Band, and as thread post >>19 confirms, it’s a separate project from the TV series’ second season. The sharpest divide was over the evaluation of screenwriter Erika Yoshida: some pushed back against her continued involvement, citing past remarks where she reportedly called the original’s staging “noise,” while others countered by pointing to original creator Aki Hamaji’s public comment expressing gratitude. Some compared it to the Chainsaw Man Reze-arc film, and concerns kept resurfacing about how far the commercial appeal could extend beyond the existing fanbase.
