The story
In a 5ch live-discussion thread about the manga GANTZ, users praised the wild momentum of the Catastrophe arc and the despair of the Italy mission, while others pushed back against calls that everything after the Buddha Statue arc was “superfluous.” The debate also touched on why opinions on the finale are so divided. Some pointed to how the real world gets dragged into the story after the Thousand-Hand arc, and to GANTZ’s influence on later death-game manga, with talk eventually turning to the setting of the ongoing Edo-period spinoff, E.
What people said
The despair in the Italy mission was next level.
GANTZ without the sex and gore is like ramen without the noodles.
It's like saying take the sex and gore out of Berserk.
GANTZ is great precisely because it doesn't care about mainstream appeal.
GANTZ always felt like the gore alone made it unsuitable for a mainstream audience,
so I don't get how Demon Slayer, which is just as gory, became a mainstream hit.
The Leek Alien and Tanaka Alien were the perfect hook right at the start
— heavy on the gags, which is the key point
That's what makes the real despair of the Thousand-Hand arc that follows hit so much harder.
It wasn't finished yet back then, so I ended up rereading the early episodes a few times 😊
Re: #14
If you read it from the start, it makes sense —
Kurono, who'd become a low-key slacker,
ends the story by becoming everyone's hero again, just like in his childhood
That ending was predictable from the very beginning.
Though on average, it's still entertaining all the way through.
Isn't the best part the Mini Alien arc after the Thousand-Hand arc, where the real world gets dragged in, not just the GANTZ game itself?
People who say "everything after X is filler" for any manga
just have short attention spans and low tolerance
And yet they say it so smugly.
Stuff like As the Gods Will
does feel influenced by GANTZ.
The impact of Oka clearing 7 missions was huge
He only lost because Nurarihyon was a brutal first-encounter boss that was just too strong
if he'd survived, he probably would've dominated the Catastrophe arc too.
I get wanting to see a bit more of the epilogue, but
it's not a bad finale.
If Netflix picked it up, they could probably animate it all the way to the end — I'd love to see it get a new anime adaptation.
A nod to Misa Hayase from Macross.
The little brother and the vampire stuff are still a mystery
It ended with "so what even were these guys," same as with Izumi.
Oh right, Izumi existed
That was really left hanging.
Re: #78
Wait, so it just ended with Izumi still dead?
It got brushed off as "a GANTZ bug," same as with Nishi-kun.
I think it's just that she got summoned before she'd actually died
Like how Reika made a second copy of Kurono, whether the original body is alive or not doesn't matter for that
so it probably just means Kishimoto's wrist-cutting attempt was a miraculous, right-at-death's-door survival.
There's a theory that Onizuka is the strongest character if you exclude Kaze Daizaemon.
A gay character resembling Onizuka showed up in Inuyashiki too
must be a type Oku-sensei really likes.
I see the latest volume at the bookstore sometimes.
It's GANTZ set in the Edo period.
It's a "what if GANTZ existed in the Edo period" spinoff
No idea yet why it's set in Edo or what it all means
In the current storyline they've traveled to the future and joined up with the main cast
it's cool that the Thousand-Armed Kannon is now an ally
It's just moving incredibly slowly.
Background and Key Points of This Discussion
GANTZ, written by Hiroya Oku, ran in Weekly Young Jump starting in 2000 and concluded in 2013. Its premise — ordinary people randomly conscripted to fight aliens — is widely credited with influencing the death-game manga that followed. Note that the “possible anime remake” mentioned in the thread is speculation, not an official announcement, so it shouldn’t be taken as confirmed. Long-running series often see split opinions on their finales, and it’s common for complaints like “not enough epilogue” to coexist with views like “exactly as expected given the structure.” The ongoing spinoff E is set in the Edo period, and its connection to the main story has not been clearly explained within the work itself.
