Motoki Daisuke’s Drastic Weight Loss Sparks Concern — 5ch Asks “Can He Handle 143 Games on the Road?”

The story

Former Yomiuri Giants coach Motoki Daisuke (54) attended the “Shigeo Nagashima Baseball School” held on October 31 in Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture, alongside Giants alumni Nakahata Kiyoshi (72), Makihara Hiromi (63), and Sadaoka Shoji (69). His Instagram post the following day showed him noticeably thinner than before — so much so that his uniform looked baggy on him — and fans quickly voiced concern. On 5ch, with other alumni his age or older looking robust by comparison, opinions split over whether this was simple weight loss or a sign of illness.

Because watching an Osaka night-view video channel on YouTube beats watching Peace-kun at Omiya Park any day.

The second photo is Makihara, but
I can't tell who's in the first and third.

Re: #4
Isn't that Nakahata and Sadaoka?
6AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:18
Losing weight is obviously a good thing, right?
Just don't do it with Mounjaro! (a diabetes drug also used off-label for weight loss)
11AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:21
Nakahata's 72 and he's still got no gut and hasn't lost any muscle — that's impressive.
13AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:22
Don't tell me the reason for the drastic weight GAIN is…

Ramen, maybe?

After getting bullied by the late Otani back in the day…

now one punch would finish this guy off easy.
15AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:23
He looks more frail than the kids from the youth baseball team who showed up.
16AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:24
Nakahata's 72, Makihara's 63, Sadaoka's 69 (turning 70 at the end of this month)
and compared to those three looking full of energy, there's Motoki at 54…

Re: #16
Losing weight like that at 54 is worrying.
His posture looks bad along with the weight loss, like he's actually losing muscle mass itself.
Could be something like diabetes or a hormonal disorder.
17AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:26
That gets balanced out by his wife being, well, 'that' — so it's a wash.
18AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:26
They probably just don't make uniforms that fit a so-called 'average build' —
even the current players are all like 180cm/90kg.
19AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:26
One perk of retiring a Giant is you get to wear the Giants uniform at events like this.
20AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:27
No no —
he's probably not diabetic yet, just pre-diabetic.
He should watch his diet, but living a normal life shouldn't be a problem.
21AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:27
He's way too thin.
Even if it's not illness, losing this much weight means a middle-aged guy loses his power.
Coaching jobs basically have no days off.
Can he really handle traveling with the team for 143-plus games?
25AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:28
When a big guy suddenly turns thin, it's genuinely worrying.
26AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:29
Losing weight from diabetes — isn't that already a late-stage symptom?
32AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:33
"Pro baseball is a world where everyone gathered together is dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met in your life."

Re: #32
Sounds like he was trying to pull the line that tattoo artist made about "idiots love a ¥5,000 bill" — and it completely flopped. (reference to an old internet meme)

When he went on that mask segment on Suiyoubi no Downtown (a Japanese variety show), it became a topic nobody wanted to bring up.
37AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:34
Re: #35
The Suiyoubi no Downtown shill brigade shows up everywhere lol
even elementary schoolers don't watch that show lol
36AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:34
If his diabetes has actually progressed this far,
things like limb amputation or blindness could follow.
I wonder if he's okay.
Well, he's probably getting good medical care,
so I'd guess he's fine.
78AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:57
Re: #36
Amputation only happens to people who really neglect it or never exercise.
Catch it before tissue death sets in and you're fine.
Same with blindness — deal with it as soon as something feels off and it shouldn't be an issue.
45AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:41
Once you get older, being skin-and-bones is actually the thing people worry about.
53AnonymousNov 2, 2026 14:46
Re: #45
Exactly this.
When a middle-aged man or woman suddenly loses weight past 50, illness is the first thing you suspect.
95AnonymousNov 2, 2026 15:05
It's less that he just lost weight and more that he's lost more muscle than an average person.

He's probably going to bulk back up from here on — makes sense.
…so why didn't he do that during his playing days lol
101AnonymousNov 2, 2026 15:08
Re: #98
If he'd trained properly, he would've surpassed Matsui.
114AnonymousNov 2, 2026 15:13
Re: #101
If we're going there,
he wouldn't have been overtaken by Matsui in the first place,
right?

Japan's sports world kings of drastic weight loss:

Baseball → Motoki
Soccer → Narahashi
Sumo → Takanohana
109AnonymousNov 2, 2026 15:12
Re: #105
Takanohana rebounded (gained every bit of it back) beautifully though lol
119AnonymousNov 2, 2026 15:16
Re: #105
Narahashi naturally had a small appetite, but bulked up for his sport — once he retired and went back to eating normally, he slimmed down in no time.
Same deal as Minatogawa oyakata (a sumo stablemaster).

Background and Key Points of This Story

Motoki Daisuke was known during his playing days as a solidly built Yomiuri Giants infielder; since retiring, he’s worked as a TV commentator and head coach. 54 isn’t especially young on its own, but the contrast stood out because Nakahata Kiyoshi (72) and Sadaoka Shoji (69), who appeared alongside him at the event, have kept notably trim physiques despite their age. Thread commenters floated possibilities like diabetes or cancer-related cachexia, but these are purely speculation based on his appearance — neither Motoki himself nor the team has made any official statement about his health or condition. Some also pointed out the weight loss could simply be a healthy one, so it’s worth noting that losing weight doesn’t automatically mean serious illness.
