  • When Did the Console Wars Start? 5ch Digs Up the Board’s Very First Thread — It Ended With Just ‘No Chance.’

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board asked when the hardware rivalries between users actually began. Replies pointed out that similar rivalries existed even before 2ch, going back to the PC-communication service “Minazuki” and Sega’s official BBS, and that the Geha board itself started in April 2000 from a thread debating the Dreamcast’s future. It was also noted that the term “next-gen console war” was reportedly coined by Masashi Saeki, SCE’s PR manager at the time, raising the idea that at least part of the rivalry originated from corporate marketing rather than growing organically among fans.

Has the online console war been going on since before 5ch?
Or did it start with 5ch (formerly 2ch)?

The console war really got defined around the Nintendo/Sega/NEC hardware era
Though I think there was Famicom vs. other consoles even before that

Buying every console and every game is financially impossible for a kid, so the Geha mentality is an aggressive defense mechanism: 'I'm not jealous of the console I don't own, I just hate it and chose not to buy it on purpose'
Though these days that's gotten twisted into something close to religious fanaticism for some people lol

Though honestly I think Sony probably already considered itself the winner over Nintendo by that point

No matter the era, it's always been roughly three hardware makers fighting it out, just with different companies

    Background and Key Points

The Geha board was born in 2000 when threads with a strongly confrontational tone were split off from the “Home Console” board, and its oldest surviving thread is said to be a Dreamcast-related thread from that April. Hardware rivalries existed even before the internet became widespread, in places like PC-communication networks and official corporate BBSes, suggesting this is less an internet-born phenomenon than one that has simply carried over across different media over time. The thread also noted that the term “next-generation console war” was reportedly coined by SCE’s PR manager at the time, suggesting part of the rivalry may have originated from corporate marketing strategy. That said, the claim that hardware rivalries in the US date back to the Mega Drive/Genesis era wasn’t backed by any source, so it’s worth keeping in mind how widely held that view actually is.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry [Geha]) thread “[Question] When did the console war between users actually start?“

  • Hopes Rise for GTA6’s First-Ever Perfect Metascore — 5ch: ‘If It Flops, the Industry Tanks’

With GTA6’s release about a month away, a post appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board — nicknamed “Geha” [ゲハ, short for ゲーム・ハード, a board known for heated console-war-style debates] — claiming that IGN, GameSpot, and Eurogamer were all about to award it a perfect Metascore of 100. The thread took off from there. The previous game, GTA5, holds the record for the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time across any medium, and posters voiced both hope and anxiety that “depending on how GTA6 turns out, the entire Western games industry could slide into a slump.” At the same time, plenty of posters took a more cautious view on sales, arguing that “it’ll be hard to beat the 200 million units the last game sold” and asking “how much will the now-older original fanbase really still play it?” — so opinion was split on both the review scores and the sales numbers.

PS5 and Xbox are both on pace to fall well short of the PS4/Xbox One generation — objectively that's a pretty alarming state of affairs, but the West seems weirdly calm about it.
They probably believe 'GTA6 will carry us through.'
On top of that, it'll need a 60fps version on PS6 and 'Helix' [the rumored codename for next-gen Xbox] to help drive those platforms too.

With a code-in-a-box edition you're not limited by disc supply, so having zero restock in sight a month before launch is strange.

Maybe Amazon is deliberately holding back pre-orders because they don't want leftover unsold stock.

    Re: #83
Hang on, people on Geha were going on forever about 'codes come with an expiration date' — did everyone just forget that?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Metascore is Metacritic’s aggregated score of outlet reviews, and even the biggest blockbusters essentially never land a perfect score. As one poster in the thread put it, “even Elden Ring only got a 96” — a 100 would be effectively unprecedented. Worth flagging: the thread starter’s claim that IGN, GameSpot, and Eurogamer were all giving GTA6 a “100” came with no link to any outside source, and several commenters in the thread openly questioned or pushed back on whether the claim was even true. The other major thread of debate was sales forecasting. GTA5 is a genuine outlier, holding the Guinness World Record for fastest entertainment product in any medium to pass $1 billion in sales (3 days), but many posters were doubtful GTA6 could top its predecessor’s 200-million-unit lifetime total, pointing to the 13 years since the last release and to changing life circumstances — whether the now-older original player base would keep playing the same way. The claim that “the day-one quota is 50 million units” likewise appeared with no cited source, and some posters asked for evidence. And against the backdrop of current PS5 and Xbox sales both trailing their predecessor generation, the sheer amount of hope being pinned on one single game to revive hardware momentum is itself a telling snapshot of the gap between the industry’s expectations and its actual demand.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of a thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board — a major Japanese anonymous-forum community — titled “Looks Like GTA6 Is About to Get the First-Ever Perfect Metascore.”

  • Britain’s famously harsh ‘EDGE Magazine’ gives Nintendo’s new ‘Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave’ a 9/10

EDGE Magazine, the UK gaming publication known for its harsh reviews, gave Nintendo’s simulation RPG “Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave” a high score of 9 out of 10 — news of this was shared on X (formerly Twitter) and sparked discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. Since EDGE is known for handing out low scores even to blockbuster titles, this high score is considered unusual even by the magazine’s own standards. In the thread, opinions were traded from all kinds of angles: the gap between the glowing overseas reception and the harsher reactions seen in parts of Japan, takes on political correctness, and doubts about the reviewer’s own scoring standards.

EDGE Magazine just awarded Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave a 9/10 🔥

That’s an especially impressive score, because EDGE is notoriously brutal on games — their scores don’t come easy.

EDGE Magazine is a long-running British gaming publication dating back to the 1990s, known for giving tough scores even to major titles, which makes a 9-out-of-10 a rare high mark even by the magazine’s own standards. “Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave” is the latest entry in Nintendo’s simulation RPG (Fire Emblem) series; while it earned praise overseas for its deep strategic gameplay, domestic reactions in Japan showed notable frustration with its difficulty and controls. Opinions in the thread split between those who felt overseas review standards have shifted in recent years, and those who simply believed the title’s quality was that high. At the same time, some posts claimed certain reviewers’ scoring tendencies are biased toward specific platforms, and others asserted that critical reactions on social media were an organized campaign by operators from a specific country — but it’s worth noting these are all individual speculation from 5ch posters, not substantiated claims.

  • “Ace Combat 8” Sells Out on Day One — 5ch: “The Real Fight Is Over the Bonus Zero Port”

Bandai Namco’s new flight shooter “ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THE EVE” launched on October 2, and physical copies are already running low across online retailers. The reason: an early-purchase bonus bundling a port of the previous title, “Ace Combat Zero.” With no plans for a standalone re-release and each download code usable only once, demand has concentrated on the current window while physical copies are still available. On 5ch, discussion ranged from confusion over how the bonus actually works, to why some gamers still stick with disc-based play, to the game’s reception overseas.

GAME Watch — Oct 2 (Fri), 13:45 JST

Physical copies of “ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THE EVE (Ace Combat 8),” the dramatic flight shooter released today, October 2, by Bandai Namco Entertainment, are running low in stock across various online retailers.

“ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THE EVE” is the latest entry in the “Ace Combat” series, arriving roughly seven years after its predecessor, “ACE COMBAT 7: SKIES UNKNOWN.” Early access (advance access) began on September 27 ahead of general release, and the standard edition finally launched today, October 2.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Ace Combat Zero” port bundled as an early-purchase bonus can only be redeemed once per download code, and there are no plans to sell it separately or reissue it. The thread showed a mix of reactions: some users wanted to secure early copies — including used ones — specifically for the bonus, while others understood that the bonus generally comes with any physical copy bought on release day, and some posts even confused pre-order bonuses with early-purchase bonuses. Users also pointed to reasons the physical disc format persists, such as it sometimes being cheaper than the download version and being resellable after finishing the game. Since the series’ last mainline entry, “7,” came out roughly seven years ago, and several spin-off titles exist outside the main numbering, some users found it odd to call this the “8th” entry.

The Hardware/Industry board, where terms like “gokiburi” (cockroach, a slur for PlayStation fans) and “nin-buta” (Nintendo pig) fly freely, has a long-established culture of Nintendo and Sony partisans goading each other’s camps — and many threads are created specifically to stir up that rivalry. The concurrent-player numbers cited in the replies appear to be drawn from Steam observation data, not official figures or primary-source statistics, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. Another hallmark of this board is how old hardware debates keep resurfacing, as seen in the back-and-forth over N64 and PlayStation load times. The view raised in the thread — that the better a game sells, the more complaints tend to dominate online discussion — is also a thought-provoking point for thinking about game reception in general.

    distributing it digitally.

Alongside this, the “Kinnikuman Choujin General Election 2026” will be held, and the Choujin who place highest will be granted the right to appear in the game.

Whenever an isekai/"Naro-kei" show (series adapted from the self-publishing site Shosetsuka ni Naro, usually reincarnation/fantasy stories) becomes a hit, everyone copies it and suddenly it's isekai everywhere. Whenever a cute-girl show hits, same story. There's basically no anime left these days that shows real originality instead of just copying whatever's popular. Pretty pathetic.

Re: #95 The consensus is that Terryman is the strongest.

    Background and talking points

“Muscle Tag Match” was originally released by Takara for the Famicom in 1985; this new Reiwa-era revival will be distributed by Bandai Namco as a pay-once smartphone title. A key feature is that it’s tied in with the “Choujin General Election 2026,” which doubles as a vote for who gets to appear in the game — the thread featured plenty of agonizing over ballot choices and anticipation for newly added Choujin. The discussion also branched out into debates over the original Famicom version’s mechanics; arguments over things like the hit rate on the low dropkick, and the “strongest character” debates centering on Warsman, Terryman, and Ramenman, are all rooted in glitches and strategy info from back when the original game came out. Worth noting: “Kinniku Star Throne Wars” is a separate Disk System game based on the same Kinnikuman source material — not the same title as Muscle Tag Match — so some of the nostalgia shared in the thread actually mixes up two different games.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Game] ‘Kinnikuman: Muscle Tag Match’ Revives in the Reiwa Era as a Pay-Once Smartphone Release! Originally an ’85 Famicom Game, Over 50 Choujin Planned to Appear.”

  • Sony’s PS5 Hands-On Event Requires a PS Plus Subscription to Reserve a Slot, Sparking 5ch Debate

It became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board that the PS5 hands-on corner at Sony’s “PlayStation Matsuri” event in Osaka requires a PS Plus subscription just to make an advance reservation. The official guidelines state that “only the person who made the reservation may try the demo” and that “if we are unable to verify your identity on the day, you may be denied entry,” and explicitly spell out that companions cannot try the demos themselves and can only stand and watch. In the thread, opinion split between those calling it an insular event that shuts out newcomers from the get-go, and those reading it as meaning PS Plus is only required for the reservation itself, with walk-up demo play on the day being a separate matter — leading to a back-and-forth where posters kept citing the same text but arriving at opposite readings.

At “PlayStation Matsuri,” you’ll be able to try out a wide range of popular titles, including buzzworthy games that were exhibited at the PlayStation booth during Tokyo Game Show 2026 this past September.

    Re: #144
Looks like they forgot all about the "approx. wait time: ___ min" part

Background and key points of this discussion

PS Plus is Sony’s paid subscription service, whose main perks are things like online multiplayer and access to free monthly titles. The “PlayStation Matsuri” event in question here is a promotional event letting attendees try out titles that were exhibited at Tokyo Game Show 2026, and reading the official wording, Sony isn’t asking for PS Plus as payment for the demo itself — the actual requirement is presenting a PSN account for reservation, identity verification, and anti-scalping purposes. The thread’s sticking point was whether to treat this “reservation requirement” as the same thing as a “requirement just to try the demo”: some argued that if a demo unit happens to be free on the day you might be able to use it without ever reserving, while others countered that since you can’t even take part in the event at all without reserving, PS Plus is effectively mandatory regardless — and the two sides never quite met in the middle. What readers may easily get wrong is that this condition doesn’t extend to PS5 hardware or game purchases in general; it’s a temporary measure for managing entry to one specific promotional event.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry “Geha”) thread “[Sad News] Sony Ends Up Forcing PS Plus Subscription for Osaka PS5 Hands-On Event.”

  • Sony’s New “Wolverine” Game Already 44% Off in Germany Too — 5ch: “You Don’t Often See a Worldwide Fire Sale Like This”

Sony’s new title “Wolverine” became a hot topic on 5ch’s game hardware board (Gehan) after it was found to be discounted 44% in the German market just days after release. In the thread, users pointed out that the discount rate was also steep in Japan, while reports poured in of physical copies sitting unsold on shelves overseas as well, prompting comments like “You rarely see a game go on a worldwide fire sale like this.” The focus of discussion was why a title built around such a popular character — one expected to be a hit based on pre-order numbers — is struggling everywhere. Posters also noted that the Metacritic score came in lower than expected, and that the shift toward download-only releases makes it harder to gauge a game’s quality from the outside.

    63AnonymousOct 2, 2026 17:28

PlayStation's gotten way too obsessed with Metascore
Nintendo's Iwata brought up Metascore as an example at a shareholder meeting or something too, but in practice they still mainly went by word-of-mouth user reviews — PlayStation's lost that flexibility and now treats Metascore like a must-hit number

It'll probably still clear a million worldwide
It's just that Japan is bombing to an extreme degree — even a market the size of Spain moved 50k in its first week
The problem is, if a character with Wolverine-level brand power only sells this much, then no IP is going to justify a development budget this size

    59AnonymousOct 2, 2026 17:25
This is exactly why download-only is risky — it's not that physical gets discontinued, it's that the game is trash and doesn't sell, so it gets discounted
Meaning you'd end up only able to buy a game like this digitally, with no way to return it. Whether you're a physical buyer or a digital-only buyer, there's nothing but downside here
    61AnonymousOct 2, 2026 17:27

You might not believe it, but Wolverine was a character on par with Spider-Man in popularity even before all these Spider-Man movies started coming out
Things have shifted a bit with all the different movies releasing, but Wolverine is still top-tier even now

Then why isn't the game selling????

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual for new games to get discounted shortly after release overseas, but what stood out in the thread was the disconnect: “pre-order demand was supposedly strong, yet physical stock is piling up on shelves, and the Metascore came in lower than expected at 75.” It’s worth noting that the specific discount percentages and shipment figures cited in the thread are all individual posters’ own estimates, not confirmed official sales figures. Posters also raised a broader point: as games move toward download-only releases, “market signals” like discounts and used-game circulation become harder to see, leaving buyers with less information to judge quality before purchase — making this more than just a question of whether one particular game is good or bad.

  • Memory and SSD Prices Skyrocket, Dealing a Blow to PC Gaming — Switch 2 Comparisons Spark Debate

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a discussion heated up after memory prices quadrupled and SSD prices tripled, sparking claims that “PC gaming might really be over.” Some pointed to the graphical quality of Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake and argued that “a handheld like the Switch 2 is good enough,” while others countered that the PC market is on a completely different scale from the Switch 2. Still others noted that since GPU makers aren’t releasing budget-tier models, even if the number of PC owners doesn’t decline, the number of “people who actually game on PC” might shrink — and the thread split over how seriously to take the impact of the price hikes.

    Memory's up 4x, SSDs up 3x.
Guess Switch 2 is the only option left.

People who can't afford a Switch 2 trash the Ocarina of Time remake
and just watch videos of it instead — turns out quite a few folks on overseas Nintendo-focused news sites do exactly that, lol.

Probably means if you watch a let's-play, see the Ocarina of Time remake's graphics, and think "a handheld's fine with just the Switch 2," then there's no reason to splurge on a more powerful handheld.

Got a source for PC users going back to consoles?
Switch 2 is nothing but a loser platform with a market size that's garbage next to PC's.

Even "Chameleon" (nickname for a certain hit game), which sold 20 million copies on PC, bombed with only 300,000 copies on Switch 2.

Besides the price hikes, the heyday of MMOs, FPS/MOBAs, open-world games, and AAA titles is already behind us,
so of course things feel like they've lost steam.

It's the same as how PC gaming hit a growth ceiling after only expanding in certain directions — the whole PC market has hit its growth ceiling too.
It's just that growth in China and developing countries is propping it up.

Not really. Honestly the best timing was right around when Wilds got judged as mediocre and the playerbase thinned out.

    Re: #162
Honestly the cheaper one down there is just better.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The price surge in memory (DRAM) and NAND-type SSDs traces back to AI data centers’ explosive demand straining production lines, driving up global component prices since the second half of 2025. This isn’t unique to PC gaming — it’s part of a broader semiconductor market squeeze that also hits smartphones and home appliances, which runs a bit counter to the thread’s underlying premise that “PC alone is getting the short end of the stick.” Also, when people argue about “market size,” whether PC or the Switch 2 comes out bigger depends heavily on which metric is used — hardware units sold, software units sold, or player population — so the conclusion shifts easily depending on that choice, and part of the thread’s disagreement comes from people talking past each other without aligning on which metric they mean. “Number of people who own a PC” and “number of people who play high-spec games on PC” are two separate metrics, and the point that only the latter might shrink first is a perspective worth keeping in mind when thinking about where the market goes from here.

  • CyberConnect2 President Says Scrapping Physical Game Cases Is “Nothing but Good” — Opinions Split

CyberConnect2 president Piroshi posted on X that the disappearance of physical game packaging would be “nothing but good.” He noted that profit margins differ sharply between packaged and download sales, and that over 90% of his company’s own sales already come from downloads. The remark was picked up on 5ch’s console/industry (“Geha”) board, where discussion talked past itself — some framed it as a publisher profit-margin issue, others as a question of user benefit — and the thread grew long with arguments over retail distribution burdens, Japan’s 170-day security deposit system, and the drawback that digital copies can’t be resold or traded secondhand.

“There’s a clear difference in profit margins between packaged and digital.”

“Download sales have an explosively better profit margin.”

“Over 90% of our sales already come from digital downloads.”

Over 90% of sales already come from downloads.

    14AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:48
Something you can't buy, sell, or trade can never really count as a collectible.

You'd think a studio that makes character-licensed games would understand that.

    Re: #19
They only keep releasing physical copies because a loud minority like you would rage like crazy otherwise.
It's purely a call to avoid damaging their credibility.
If publishers could skip it without the responsibility falling on their own decision, nothing would make them happier.
If you've ever actually worked a job,
you'd know there are things you shouldn't have to do and don't want to do,
but end up doing anyway because you have no choice.
    That should be obvious.
    83AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:07

By that logic, download-only titles that never get a physical release outnumber them many times over.
    39AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:54
Wait, does this mean the reason Dragon Ball, NARUTO, and Demon Slayer games all got their Switch versions later wasn't just a hardware limitation, or Shueisha/KADOKAWA being cozy with Sony — it was because the president holds a grudge ("ongi," a sense of obligation/score to settle) against Nintendo?
    47AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:56
    Re: #39
    I think that's simply a manpower issue.
Other companies' Switch versions of simultaneous-release multiplatform titles really do turn out awful, but CC2 actually polishes theirs properly.
If rushing it just means ending up with a crappy product, I'd rather they keep doing it the way they do now.
    42AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:55

They say that with 80-90% of sales already digital,
if they dropped the packaged version,
the developer's cut per unit sold
would roughly double from where it is now.
So why would they throw away doubling that 80-90%
just to lock in profit on the remaining 10-20%?
    76AnonymousOct 2, 2026 16:05
Digital versions aren't even cheaper, so scrapping physical packaging gives users zero benefit.

    Re: #125
Someone said Sony could just outsource production even if they closed their factories, but it's unclear whether that's actually feasible.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Packaged games sold domestically in Japan are subject to a system requiring publishers to post a security deposit for retail distribution (including the so-called 170-day rule), which creates real operating costs to keep the master copy in production. Download sales, by contrast, carry no shipping, inventory, or retail-margin costs, so a publisher’s cut is generally said to run close to double — but since the retail price itself doesn’t drop, the actual benefit to users is thin. The thread split along a fault line: whether to prioritize maximizing publisher profit, or to protect people who rely on the secondhand market, collectible value, or who are limited by connection speed or storage space. Some also pointed out that CC2 itself doesn’t handle its own distribution, which colors how much weight to give the remark. And the counterargument that “download-only titles already outnumber packaged ones” is easy to overstate, since that ratio is often calculated by lumping in indie titles — it doesn’t necessarily hold for big-budget, simultaneous-release multiplatform titles.
