  • Takeshi’s Challenge, Tower of Druaga… 5ch users pile on about the most brutally unfair Famicom games

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board got going about Famicom-era games that gave players a hard time. Titles mentioned included King’s Knight, Takeshi’s Challenge, The Transformers: Convoy no Nazo, Spelunker, Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Tower of Druaga, Hydlide Special, Ys, Kamen Rider Club, and Kakefu-kun’s Baseball. The debate centered on how many of these games were built so you couldn’t figure out the objective just by reading the manual — you needed a strategy guide or to swap tips with other players at the arcade — and on whether that counted as the same kind of difficulty as today’s “unfair” game design, or something different in nature.

Background and key points of the discussion

Back in the 1980s, there was no internet, so strategy info for Famicom games was limited to printed guidebooks or word of mouth. In the thread, testimony emerged that for Tower of Druaga specifically, arcade-goers would swap tips through a notebook left at the arcade — a completely different premise from today, where you can just search online and get the answer instantly. That gap is behind the recurring sentiment in the thread that “back then, games were basically built so a kid couldn’t clear them.” At the same time, some posters drew a line between that and today’s “unfair” design, arguing that the old unfairness came from immature balance tuning rather than deliberate difficulty design — a distinction worth keeping in mind rather than just romanticizing the past.

  • Has the PS5 Really Gotten Weaker? 5ch Debates Shrinking Exclusives and Retail Space

A thread titled “Has PlayStation really gotten ‘weaker’?” appeared on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. It was sparked by the decline in exclusive titles, with posters citing this year’s PS first-party sales figures (Wolverine in the low 20,000s, etc.) and the shrinking shelf space and number of retailers carrying PlayStation products as evidence. Meanwhile, some pushed back, pointing to PS5 titles’ strong showing in Golden Joystick Awards nominations as proof the console’s presence remains solid, splitting opinion on how to interpret the drop in exclusives. Others noted that recent PS5 titles have grown homogeneous, leaning heavily into dark fantasy and soulslike genres — keeping the debate from boiling down to a simple “strong vs. weak” binary.

    Re: #28
Probably up through the PS2, when the appeal was the rise of CDs/DVDs and how cheap they were. From the PS3 onward it was propped up by Blu-ray and graphics, with shaky footing the whole way.
    29AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
Even if it were strong, no Japanese games come out and it's wall-to-wall Western games — who'd want that? Is 'strong' or 'weak' even the right question here?
    30AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:54
If you're measuring strength against the past, the Switch 2 looks like it's gotten weaker too, so singling out the PS5 as having gotten weaker feels off.

That said, here's one thing that's certain right now: the PS6 has no bright future ahead of it. Unless it offers performance at or above the PS5 Pro while staying priced where ordinary people can actually afford it, it'll end up a losing console.
    31AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:55
The moment you ignore the obvious comparison sitting right there, it's nothing but sophistry. Fabricating an opinion while ignoring just how far Nintendo has fallen has no value.

A true powerhouse never flaunts its strength 😉
    34AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
PlayStation's current state in the domestic market is exactly the world they wished for. They did nothing, and this is the result of that wish — they should just accept it quietly.
    35AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
It's not that it got weak — it just got found out. Flattering media, strong-arming retailers, locking down third parties, maneuvering so even multiplatform games feel PS-exclusive — then Jim Ryan admitted he didn't really get the Japanese market or Japanese games and redirected the budget, and that ripped the veil right off. It was all stagecraft, all smoke and mirrors.
    36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:58
Even without GTA5, Nintendo hardware caught up to five years' worth of domestic PS5 sales in just a few years. So whatever people say about GTA6, it's just a momentary gust of wind.

In the end, the idea that one single game can save a console is about as realistic as a maiden's prayer (i.e., pure wishful thinking).
    37AnonymousOct 2, 2026 10:59
Why are you still clinging to a console that's turned to garbage? Just toss it already —
    you'll feel so much better.
    40AnonymousOct 2, 2026 11:02
Isn't part of the problem that everything PS5 puts out is the same genre of 3D action, way too many soulslikes, dark fantasy settings, murky hard-to-see screens, and blood and gore — nothing but that?

There's zero sign of organic word-of-mouth buzz. That's because everything up to now was arranged and staged by the company, going all the way back to the SCE days. Once that hand stopped moving, all that's left are the loud-mouths — scarecrows who are satisfied by a title announcement alone and just bask in their own sense of superiority.

If you can just endure three more hardware generations — 6, 7, 8 — PS9, the kind you snort up your nose, will be something street dealers everywhere sell you (a joke likening a future console to contraband peddled on the street). Just gotta survive that long.
    81AnonymousOct 2, 2026 12:22
Just saying 'PlayStation is done for' gets the point across.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Behind the decline in PS5 “exclusive titles” lies a business decision Sony made starting around 2022 to lean into multiplatform releases and introduce the positioning of “lead platform titles.” This strategy brings major titles to PC as well to widen revenue opportunities, meaning a simple count of exclusives doesn’t fully capture the real picture. It’s also worth noting that a high number of Golden Joystick Awards nominations is a different axis from actual sales volume, and the figures cited in the thread (like Wolverine’s sales numbers) are self-reported tallies circulating on 5ch, not official sales data. The shrinking retail floor space is also tied to the market-wide shift toward a higher share of digital downloads, so it can’t be chalked up entirely to a PS5-specific slump. Some in the thread even questioned the premise itself — whether there was ever a time it was ‘strong’ — underscoring how tricky cross-generational comparisons make this debate.

※This article excerpts and summarizes the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Has PlayStation really gotten “weaker”?.”

  • From “¥300 Million Inheritance” to “¥1 Million in Cash” — 5ch Users Reveal Their Savings

In response to the simple question “How much do you have saved?,” 5ch users piled in with specific figures one after another. The range ran wide — from cash savings in the low millions of yen, to tens of millions built up through stock investing, to a post claiming a ¥300 million inheritance from a parent — and plenty of replies openly doubted whether these claims were true. The thread then veered into how to actually pay inheritance tax on inherited real estate, with users discussing the deferred-payment system and renouncing an inheritance altogether. Also mixed in: a confession from someone whose sense of money got warped after their income topped ¥10 million for the first time, and a hard-luck story from a former insurance salesperson.

    I feel you, buddy
I screwed up too — ended up at a brutally abusive company working as an insurance salesman for a major life insurer
Over 3 years: ¥40 million in sales/commission on insurance premiums, a nominal annual salary of ¥10 million but take-home of only ¥6 million, which plunged me into dire poverty — that fatal blow is what made me switch jobs
After moving to a competitor in the same industry, my annual income recovered to over ¥7 million every year since. Best decision ever

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Threads asking “how much have you saved?” are a 5ch staple, and the unspoken rule is to take them with a huge grain of salt. True to form, one reply here dismissed the “¥300 million inheritance” post as “basically a lie,” underscoring that the whole thread runs on self-reported, unverifiable claims. That said, the discussion around inheritance tax is grounded in real practice: when inherited assets aren’t cash, options like paying in installments through the deferred-payment system, or renouncing the inheritance entirely if the burden is too much, genuinely exist. The claim that GHQ (the postwar Allied occupation authority) deliberately planted the inheritance tax to weaken Japan is nothing more than an urban legend — the current inheritance tax system was actually built up through postwar tax reforms. Also worth noting: since posters don’t distinguish between “savings,” “assets,” “annual income,” and “take-home pay,” the same figure of “¥100 million” can mean very different things depending on whether it’s cash deposits or total assets including investment funds — something to keep in mind while reading.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 Still Outsells PS5 4-to-1 in Weekly Sales Even After ¥10,000 Price Hike

On May 25, 2026, Nintendo raised the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 console from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980 — a ¥10,000 increase — reportedly due to rising semiconductor memory prices and a weak yen. Four months after the hike, weekly sales for September 14–20 came to 34,341 units, about four times the PS5’s sales over the same period. The thread split between those saying “comparing it to the PS5 is meaningless” and those saying “the fact that it hasn’t slowed down even after the price hike, at this price point, is a big deal.” Discussion also spread to comparisons with the 3DS’s supposedly poor second-year sales, and to the current state of the PS5, which has had its own string of price increases.

On May 25, 2026, Nintendo raised the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 console by ¥10,000, from ¥49,980 to ¥59,980.

The reasons given are rising semiconductor memory prices and the weak yen.

Four months later, weekly sales for September 14–20 came to 34,341 units.

Media outlets with no ties to Nintendo obviously have no way of knowing Nintendo's internal targets. So naturally they compare it to the PS5 instead, since it's the rival console and also a current-gen system — that's just the go-to comparison.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s easy to overlook that Switch 2’s May 2026 price hike was attributed to external factors — rising semiconductor memory prices and a weak yen — rather than to poor sales on Nintendo’s part. Within the thread, opinions split over how meaningful it is to frame this as “outselling the PS5,” a debate that really comes down to the gap between each company’s undisclosed internal targets and the weekly sales figures the media actually has access to. The comparison with the 3DS surfaced data showing Switch 2’s cumulative second-year sales running almost neck-and-neck with the 3DS’s — but the 3DS later lost steam after a price cut, so whether Switch 2 follows the same trajectory remains to be seen. There were also moments where figures of dubious accuracy — like extreme North American weekly sales numbers sourced from social media screenshots — spread without verification, a reminder to treat sales figures without an official announcement with caution.

  • New AI Tech “QSSR” Arrives on PS5 — 5ch Debates Whether the Image Quality Boost Is Even Real

On October 2, Sony announced “Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR),” an AI upscaling technology for the PS5. Until now, PSSR was exclusive to the PS5 Pro, but QSSR brings AI-powered image enhancement to the standard PS5 as well. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were the first titles to support it, via patches released the same day. On 5ch’s hardware board, opinions split between those who said the official comparison video showed “almost no difference” and those who praised the sharper edge definition, with the discussion also touching on comparisons to the Switch 2’s DLSS support and the technical details of how the processing actually works.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

PSSR is an AI upscaler that debuted in fall 2024, exclusive to the PS5 Pro, using machine-learning-based inference to produce sharper output than traditional checkerboard rendering. QSSR is positioned as an adaptation of that same processing to run on the standard PS5, and as of this announcement, support is limited to the two titles that received the day-one patch. The thread split on a single point — whether the difference is actually visible in comparison images — a criticism that has come up repeatedly with AI upscaling announcements, since static screenshot comparisons often struggle to convey the real-world effect. It’s also worth noting that terms like “Nishi” and “buta” (pig) are standard rival nicknames for Nintendo fans used on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board, part of the board’s usual back-and-forth rather than attacks on any specific individual.

    Re: #84
That's because the manga isn't popular anymore anyway

    Background and key points

“Oishinbo” is a cooking manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki that has run since 1983, and it was previously adapted into a TV anime. What sparked discussion this time wasn’t the quality of the new PV itself, but specifically which era of the manga’s art the characters’ faces most resembled. In long-running manga, the art style often shifts over the years, so which period gets used as the reference point changes how the anime comes across. Commenters in the thread pointed out that even the previous anime adaptation had faces that differed from the manga, and the discussion extended to the broader, fairly common trend of anime rarely replicating a manga’s art style exactly. Meanwhile, claims that the animation work was outsourced overseas were not backed by any evidence and remain pure speculation.

  • New ‘Aniimo’ Monster Designs Spark 5ch Debate Over Pokémon Resemblance

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (Geha) board, a thread blew up over how closely the monster designs in the new game “Aniimo” resemble Pokémon. The discussion kicked off over “ODDISH,” the English name for Oddish (Nazonokusa), then spiraled as users posted image after image of creatures resembling Kyurem and Dragapult, splitting opinion on whether it counts as a rip-off. Some pointed out that Aniimo’s monster-catching method matches Palworld’s pre-lawsuit mechanics and asked “why isn’t Nintendo suing this one too?” — but others countered that “the current system has already been judged not to be a problem.” The thread also touched on Pokémon’s sales trends and its nomination status at the Golden Joystick Awards.

ODDISH is the English name for Pokémon’s Oddish (Nazonokusa)

    Background and Key Points

The thread’s backdrop is the 2024 lawsuit in which Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Palworld’s developer over patent infringement tied to “monster capturing.” The claim that Aniimo’s capture method resembles pre-lawsuit Palworld draws directly on that precedent. The Golden Joystick Awards are a UK-based gaming awards show, and the “Still Playing” category mentioned in the thread is a separate popularity-vote category from the main Game of the Year contenders — Palworld’s inclusion there shouldn’t be confused with an actual GOTY nomination. Additionally, the source of the sales-trend images posted in the thread couldn’t be verified within the thread itself, so the accuracy of those figures remains unconfirmed.

  • Is Stick-Click a Nintendo ‘Rip-off’? 5ch: ‘The 1974 Patent Isn’t Even Sony’s’

On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, a thread questioned whether Nintendo and Xbox simply copied PlayStation’s analog stick-click feature. That premise was quickly undercut by a reply pointing out that the patent in question was filed back in 1974, has long since expired, and wasn’t even filed by Sony. From there the thread spiraled into debates over the origins of L/R buttons, rumble, and the PS-style boomerang-shaped controller, with posters split over which manufacturer actually thought of what first.

The now-standard controller shape, with the left and right grips extending downward in that boomerang form —
that was also invented by Sony for PlayStation.
Makes you wonder if they just never patented it.
At first I thought the design looked weird and kind of uncool,
but I was surprised how much more comfortable to hold it was compared to older controllers.
That's probably exactly why it caught on and became today's standard shape.
    107AnonymousOct 1, 2026 19:58
    Re: #99
If all you mean is a boomerang shape with grips extending downward, there was already something called the BPS-MAX back in the Famicom era…
Practically nobody knows about it, but even though it was flat-ish, it curved gently and was fairly comfortable to hold.
Its D-pad was sort of a proto slide-pad too, which you could call ahead of its time, though it felt pretty quirky on the Famicom.

    Re: #100
Are you really pressing that hard that you keep triggering it by accident?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Controller “designs” are protected for a limited time under patents or utility models, but that protection typically expires ten-to-twenty-odd years after filing, after which the design becomes free for anyone to use. The “1974 patent” cited in the thread is a textbook example of this — the spec itself is old, and crucially it didn’t originate with Sony, which is a fair point. Where the thread split was over where to draw the line on “copying”: there are competing claims about which company first implemented individual features like L/R buttons, rumble, or clickable sticks, and in practice it’s closer to the truth that multiple manufacturers converged on similar ideas by borrowing from each other. Replies tend to frame this as a tug-of-war over whether Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony is the “true originator,” but it’s worth remembering that game controller shapes and input schemes are the product of industry-wide trial and error — not something that reduces neatly to a binary of “rip-off” versus “original.”

They posted a fake source claiming stuff like OD and PHYSHINT were coming to PS5, so they must be getting pretty desperate.

Once they release a physical copy, CERO (Japan's ratings board) sticks its nose in,

Same voice actor, but it's been 15 years since he last played the role, so the performance has shifted quite a bit.

No joke, apparently they developed tech to use the SSD as game memory and actually got around the Series S's memory shortage.

    Re: #81
Everyone's clustering their releases around this window to avoid colliding with GTA6.

    Background and Key Points

Aggregator sites like Metacritic calculate a simple average across outlets, so a single reviewer handing out an extremely low score can drag the overall number down significantly. Gamekult, mentioned in the thread, has a history of wildly erratic scoring, and this case once again exposed that weakness in the aggregation method. The stark divide between GameSpot’s 7 and IGN’s 90 is another example of how much outlets’ priorities can differ. Note that while the original thread title includes “PS5,” the game is an Xbox Series X/S and PC exclusive and will not be released on PS5 — on hardware-focused boards it’s common practice to tack an unsupported platform’s name onto a thread title just to drive views, so the actual supported platforms can differ from what the title implies. The SSD-as-memory technology is also newsworthy in its own right, since tech outlets praised it as a concrete solution to the Xbox Series S’s well-known memory constraints.

  • What’s Toshihiro Nagoshi Up to Now? 5ch Buzzes with Speculation and Concern

A thread asking “what is he actually making now?” about Toshihiro Nagoshi, known as the father of the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) series, popped up on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board. After leaving Sega in 2021 to launch a new studio with a Chinese company, updates on the project have since dried up, leading posters to voice doubts and concern over what he’s been up to. Others pushed back with cooler takes like “there’s nothing to worry about” and “just ask him directly,” splitting opinion on the thread.

Sneaking right back into Sega-related stuff, how opportunistic
I was surprised they even mentioned the Nagoshi Studio name… though "was" — the past tense is kind of sad

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Toshihiro Nagoshi, known as the father of the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) series, reportedly left Sega in 2021 and launched a new studio in partnership with a Chinese company. His new project, “Gang of Dragon,” has since seen no notable updates, and the thread was split over how to read that silence. Some argued it’s only natural for fans to worry, while others coolly pushed back with comments like “just ask him directly on X” or “asking here on Geha won’t accomplish anything.” Many posts also expressed concern for the former staff who followed him out of Sega and what’s become of their careers. That said, claims made in the thread about him being unemployed or about his health are purely unverified speculation and should be treated with caution.
