  • FF’s Hironobu Sakaguchi Used to Rip Into Square Staff at Morning Meetings: ‘You’re All Completely Useless!’

In a Weekly Famitsu conversation, Katsuhisa Higuchi — who worked on the development of FFIII and other titles — revealed that on his very first day at Square, he witnessed Hironobu Sakaguchi screaming at staff during the morning meeting, “You’re all completely useless!” The story blew up on 5ch. Higuchi, terrified, says he asked a senior coworker who this scary man was, only to be told, “Oh, that’s Sakachan, the part-timer.” The thread mixed nostalgia for that old-school, hot-blooded style of mentoring with comments noting that today it would get you fired for harassment on the spot, tying it back to how modern dev teams have grown too large for that kind of one-man management to even be possible anymore.

Katsuhisa Higuchi, who worked on the development of FFIII and other titles, has revealed his intense first impression of Hironobu Sakaguchi — the father of the Final Fantasy series — from shortly after joining Square (now Square Enix).

In a conversation between the two published in Weekly Famitsu issue 1964, Higuchi recalled, “I’m pretty sure it was my very first day at Square.” At the morning meeting, he says, Sakaguchi was already furiously tearing into the staff, shouting things like “You’re all completely useless!”

Thinking, “This guy is seriously scary,” Higuchi immediately asked a senior coworker on the spot, “Who is that guy?” The answer he got was, “Oh, that’s Sakachan, the part-timer.” That said, when Sakaguchi was later asked directly about his employment status at the time, he didn’t actually confirm whether he was a part-timer.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Hironobu Sakaguchi led the Final Fantasy series starting with the original 1987 title, before leaving Square in 2003 to found Mistwalker. Katsuhisa Higuchi is a former Square staffer who worked on FFIII and other titles, and this anecdote first surfaced in a conversation between the two published in Weekly Famitsu issue 1964. It’s easy to miss that Sakaguchi never actually confirmed during the interview whether he was really employed as a part-timer — “Sakachan the part-timer” is presented simply as the nickname people used for him at the time. The thread split between those nostalgic for that kind of strict old-school mentoring, framing it as ‘a good culture we’ve lost,’ and those pointing out that doing the same thing today would get you fired for harassment on the spot. Some also noted that now that dev teams have ballooned to hundreds of people, one-man leadership like that simply isn’t structurally possible anymore.

  • GTA6’s European Rating Reveals Beheadings and Drug Use, Sparking Fears of Censorship in Japan

The content details behind GTA6’s European age rating (PEGI) have been published, revealing depictions of decapitation and dismemberment as well as scenes of snorting cocaine. On the thread, some quickly offered a level-headed take — “rating content alone doesn’t prove it’s a masterpiece” — while others worried the Japanese version would face cuts or alterations under CERO’s review process. Workarounds were floated, like buying the Xbox version through an overseas account or switching region settings on PS5, but the discussion devolved into a standoff between posters warning of terms-of-service violations and account bans, and others insisting “no such rule exists” — leaving the legality of the whole approach unresolved.

    Re: #129
Isn't creating a North American account on a PS5 itself grounds for a ban, unless you actually live in North America?

    Background and Key Points

PEGI, Europe’s rating body, discloses granular details about violent and drug-related content as part of its standard process — a level of specificity that differs from how Japan’s CERO or the US’s ESRB operate. In Japan, CERO’s standards tend to flag excessively graphic violence and drug depictions for cuts or edits, and there’s precedent for Japanese releases differing from their overseas counterparts in content. What split the thread was whether buying an overseas version — exploiting the fact that Xbox’s international release includes Japanese-language support, or switching region settings on PS5/Xbox — actually violates platform terms of service and risks an account ban. The thread itself never settled the question. Platform terms generally don’t explicitly sanction faking your region setting, but whether that actually results in a ban in practice seems to depend on the platform and how strictly it’s enforced — something this thread alone couldn’t confirm.

The 5ch “Hardware & Industry” (Geha) board lit up over the fact that pretty much every game ever featured in Sony’s PS5 promotional “Special Lineup” has gone on to flop. Wait, hold on — isn't this the same guy who kept yapping about 'digital downloads,' on a PS5 that's axing discs?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Special Lineup” is a promotional campaign PlayStation runs periodically, spotlighting games it wants to push — but since many of the titles featured have gone on to post disappointing sales after release, “Death Note” and “reverse jinx” curse jokes have become a running gag on the thread. This time, posters pointed to Capcom and Falcom titles whose fortunes turned around the moment they switched to Switch 2 multi-platform releases and dropped off the lineup, which got people excited about the jinx’s "reproducibility." Opinions were split, though, on whether the slump stems from the PS5 market shrinking overall or from the individual games themselves falling short. Worth noting: no direct causal link between being featured in the lineup and poor sales has actually been demonstrated, and the sales figures cited in the thread are largely hearsay and impression rather than hard data. It’s harmless fun as a running joke, but there’s not much to back it up as fact.

  • Nintendo’s ‘Kiddie’ Remark Still Gets Dragged Up Even in the Reiwa Era — 5ch: ‘It’s Not Going to Just Disappear’

A thread titled “Nintendo fans are still dragging up the ‘kiddie’ remark even in the Reiwa era” popped up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. It focuses on how digs once thrown by rival camps — like “the DS is for kiddies” — are still being used as ammunition in console-war flame wars well into the Reiwa era. The thread runs through a string of predictions that were proven wrong one after another, like “Elden Ring will never come to Switch,” while also throwing in a comparison of Switch 2 vs. PS5 sales figures, spiraling into an endless back-and-forth over which console is really “for kids.”

'Elden Ring will never come to Switch! Snubbed, snubbed, lol!' → It came out — with a brand-new exclusive FromSoftware title for Switch 2 on top
'Resident Evil 9 will never come! Snubbed, snubbed, lol!' → It came out, and a port of the previous game got confirmed too
'Pragmata will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It came out, and they're even releasing an amiibo
'FF7 Remake will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It came out
'Kingdom Hearts 4 will never come! Snubbed, snubbed!' → It's coming, and even the older games are getting proper download/physical versions instead of just a cloud version
'Wilds will never come, snubbed!' → It's coming, with a Deluxe pack too, for a limited-time price of 3,742 yen
'Even if Wilds comes, Ascendance sure won't! Switch 2 only gets vanilla Wilds!!' → It's coming
'Nintendo is sooo jealous of Chameleon!!! They'll probably patent-crush Chameleon just like they did with Palworld lmaooo' → It's coming. And by the way, on consoles it's Switch 2 exclusive
'W-well Persona 4 Reload flopped, so there's no way [Persona] 3 Reload is coming!!' → It's coming, and so is Persona 6

So at this point, the only things left to use as sticks to beat Switch with are 'Rinkane' (a game nickname) and GTA6

    Re: #97
That's exactly why PlayStation occupies the 'middle schooler' position

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The roots of the “kiddie” argument reportedly trace back to the mid-2000s standoff between the PSP, marketed toward adults, and the DS, marketed toward families — the thread itself quotes the era’s catchphrase, “PSP is for adults, DS is for kiddies.” Roughly 20 years on, this same label is still being recycled as a stock insult in online flame wars regardless of how much hardware specs or sales results have changed, as this thread demonstrates once again. Figures cited in the thread, such as PS5’s “roughly 96 million units sold,” are claims made on an anonymous message board, and readers should verify them against official figures themselves. It’s also worth noting a recurring feature of these kinds of threads: labels like “for kids” versus “for adults” tend to be used less to describe a game’s actual target age or genre, and more to justify whichever console someone happens to support.

  • Ocarina of Time Remake vs. GTA6: Amazon Sales Rankings Split by Country

A comparison of country-by-country Amazon bestseller rankings for the “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” remake and “Grand Theft Auto VI” set off a lively debate on 5ch’s hardware/industry (geha) board. According to the posted figures, Ocarina of Time sits at No. 5 and GTA6 at No. 30 in the US, and Ocarina of Time leads at No. 2 in Japan — but in the UK and Germany, GTA6 comes out ahead, with results varying wildly by country. Some pointed out that differences in digital-download ratios and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings might explain the gap, and the thread split over which title could really be called the winner.

The only places GTA is competing with or beating Ocarina of Time on the Amazon ranking are the UK and developing countries — that's the usual pattern
Also, on an online-only retailer like Amazon, a code-in-a-box format isn't really at a disadvantage, since only customers who already have an internet connection shop there
At brick-and-mortar stores, a lot more customers have weak internet access, so the situation's different

    A once-in-13-years, $2 billion-budget blockbuster, and the best you've got is "it'll eventually outsell a mere remake"?

    lmaooo

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Amazon’s “bestseller ranking” is a snapshot of pre-order and purchase activity at a given moment — not a measure of actual units sold. As pointed out in the thread, Switch titles tend to have a high ratio of digital downloads, and the timing of when sales get reflected in the rankings differs by country, which is why a region like the UK can see its ranking diverge from what’s actually happening in stores. GTA6 is a blockbuster that, as of a July 2026 market survey, was forecast to sell on the order of 50 million units in its first week alone — which makes judging it purely by a momentary Amazon ranking a somewhat lopsided comparison to begin with. The thread’s disagreement came down to the fact that some countries, like the US and Japan, favored Ocarina of Time, while others, like the UK and Germany, favored GTA6 — so the conclusion changes entirely depending on whose numbers you take as the baseline. It’s not really a topic that can be settled with a simple “who won.”

  • Nagoshi Studio Has Vanished, Toshihiro Nagoshi Is Job Hunting — 5ch Reacts: “He’s Over 60 and Still Job Hunting?”

Nagoshi Studio, founded by Toshihiro Nagoshi after he left Sega in 2023, has effectively vanished after roughly 10 months of silence, according to a reporter at the overseas outlet VGC. NetEase, which had been funding the studio, reportedly pulled its backing, leaving the game needing around $45 million to complete. Nagoshi himself is said to be job hunting at other studios. On 5ch, reactions ranged from comparisons with Hideo Kojima — who also left Sega but has been able to keep developing thanks to a partnership with Microsoft — to speculation about what’s next for Nagoshi personally and concern over the fate of the studio’s rank-and-file employees.

Nagoshi Studio, the studio founded by Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi, has reportedly “vanished” after around 10 months of silence.

NetEase has pulled its funding, and Nagoshi is said to need roughly $45 million to finish the game.

VGC reporter Andy Robinson says Nagoshi Studio has effectively ceased to exist: “Nagoshi Studio, not yet officially announced, [but] it’s dead.” He also says he’s heard that Toshihiro Nagoshi has recently been job hunting at other studios.

Sakaguchi, enjoying over 20 years of a long retirement, is probably the real winner here.
I recall seeing on gaming boards (Geha) people complaining that his severance from old Square was something like ¥200 million, even while the company was laying off tons of temp workers — "give me a break" type reactions.
Apparently Sakaguchi also held a decent amount of old Square stock, so he was able to cash that out and retire (what we'd now call "FIRE").

Sakaguchi himself mentioned in the liner notes for Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey's soundtrack CD that after retiring he spent his time just surfing.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Toshihiro Nagoshi left Sega in 2023 and launched Nagoshi Studio with backing from China’s NetEase, but completing the new title reportedly required several billion yen in additional funding, and NetEase’s decision to pull its support appears to have led to the studio’s effective dissolution. As game development costs climb, mid-sized studios increasingly depend on outside funding, and the risk that one change in a backer’s strategy can halt a project entirely has become more visible in recent years. The thread contrasted this with Hideo Kojima’s studio, which also relied on major backing but was able to keep developing thanks to a partnership with Microsoft, while Nagoshi Studio failed to secure a partner. Some posters pointed out that the more pressing concern isn’t really what happens to Nagoshi himself — he’s the public face — but rather the job prospects of the studio’s unnamed rank-and-file employees, framing the real issue as the gap between the spotlighted figurehead and the staff left in the shadows when a “star developer’s studio” folds. At the same time, many of the jabs about Nagoshi’s personal life, appearance, or finances were little more than baseless speculation, so this article focuses on reactions grounded in fact.

    14AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:34
After all that chest-thumping about garbage political correctness, ending up back here is just lame.
    15AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:34
For what it's worth, Ape Escape is playable on PS4 and PS5 too, right?
    18AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:36
If they were going to revive it, they should've pivoted while the original developers were still around.
    It's way too late now.
    19AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:38
I'd be happy if it actually comes out, but doesn't PS's current audience not really include people who'd buy something like this anymore?
    21AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:40
Furi Furi! Ape Escape — sales uncountable (too low to track)

It used to sell 500,000+ copies at its peak, but even though this was just a VR-only(-ish) title, was this really the last entry, 16 years ago now… (the one before that, Pipo-saru Senki, sold only 15,000 copies)
    22AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:41
It wasn't VR — it was exclusive to the "chin-con" attachment (fan slang for the game's distinctively shaped PS Move accessory).
    23AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:44
I'd be happy if it's a mainline entry, but it's probably going to be some weird spin-off again.

Reviving Siren seems like it'd sell better.
Though if foreign developers make it, it'll probably just end up as another generic Western horror game.

That's actually what happened with the PS3 one.

    28AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:54
Ape Escape was never really that big a seller to begin with…
At this point, if anyone other than Japan Studio makes it, it'll just end up as a completely different game, and even if it does come out, all I can see is it bombing.
    29AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:57
I love the design of Ape Escape 3,

    38AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:07
It didn't sell that well back then either.

    81AnonymousOct 3, 2026 14:58
    Re: #61
It was designed to be played with the symmetrical analog sticks of the DualShock, so it'd probably be hard to release on Switch-type systems, which use Pro Controllers with asymmetrical sticks copied from the Xbox controller.

    Re: #81
Stick placement alone isn't that big a deal.
Now, a system that doesn't even have a right stick at all — that would be a real problem for Ape Escape.
    91AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:20

By that logic, Katamari Damacy seems like it'd be even harder to play without symmetrical sticks, but it's out on Switch.

    84AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:11
    Re: #80
The PS3 era was the problem. There was no kid audience and development costs got too high, so they couldn't put out a new entry.
They tried hard on PSP too, but without a right stick they couldn't release a mainline game, so they put out spin-offs like racing games instead (though Saru Get You P did come out).
    92AnonymousOct 3, 2026 15:21
People don't buy a console because they want the hardware — they buy it because they want to play the software.
Do they really think people are going to go out and buy a brand-new PS5 just to play this?

    Re: #92
Even if they revive a Sony first-party game that was popular back in the day, it's unlikely to bring in any new players.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Ape Escape” began on the PS1 in 2001 as one of Sony’s early first-party titles, winning fans of all ages with its claw-machine-like monkey-capturing action. However, the series’ new releases dried up after a PS Vita title around 2010, with its most recent entry being “Furi Furi! Ape Escape,” a PS Move-compatible minigame collection. SCE Japan Studio, which handled development, has since been dissolved, and some of its staff have since joined Team Asobi, the studio currently behind “Astro Bot.” A notable feature of this overseas leak is that it specifies Team Asobi is not involved in the revival project, which set off a flurry of questions on the thread about who would actually develop it and who it’s even being made for. Opinions split mainly over whether there’s any commercial sense in releasing it as a PS5 exclusive given that longtime fans now skew middle-aged, with many arguing a Switch multiplatform release should be a given. Readers should keep in mind that this is still unconfirmed information originating overseas, not an official announcement from Sony.

  • Gaming’s ‘Death of Physical Copies’ Debate Splits 5ch Down the Middle

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board heated up over whether physical game copies are destined to disappear. Posters cited a figure showing that roughly 95% of Capcom’s game sales are now digital downloads, discussed reports that Xbox is considering a new anti-piracy system that assigns serial numbers to discs, and pointed out that the Nintendo Switch’s “Game-Key Card” doesn’t actually contain any game data. Voices welcoming the shift to digital clashed with others worried that once a console generation ends, older titles could become impossible to obtain.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The debate over how games are distributed is rooted in the maturing of digital delivery infrastructure along with rising storage capacity and falling storage prices. While package-free sales models like Steam have become standard on PC, home consoles still rely on compromise solutions like the “Game-Key Card,” and the thread showed plenty of confusion about how it actually works. A Game-Key Card contains no game data at all — it functions more like a license certificate that requires a download on first launch, letting manufacturers hold down production costs while keeping the appearance of a physical product. The worry that older disc-based titles could become hard to find after a hardware generation change is a concern shared by digital downloads too, since those depend on how long distribution servers stay online — so it’s not accurate to call either format definitively “safer.” As for the claim linking Hideo Kojima and Sony, that’s speculation raised within the thread itself, with no supporting evidence presented.

  • Digital Foundry Heaps Praise on Sony’s QSSR, Calls It a ‘Technical Triumph’

Digital Foundry tested Sony’s new upscaling tech “QSSR” and reported a major improvement in image quality. QSSR adapts “PSSR” — originally built exclusively for the PS5 Pro — for the base-model PS5, drawing attention for achieving better image quality through software processing alone, without a dedicated AI chip. Thread reactions were split: some praised Sony’s technical chops, while others raised doubts about the processing-load trade-off, DF’s own reviewing stance, and how it actually looks on a 4K setup.

PS5 Pro's PSSR2 is the strongest console solution out there—native-quality upscaled 2160p/60fps with ray tracing ON

    QSSR's target is native-quality upscaled 1440p-1620p/60fps
At the same quality as before, you get a higher frame rate
At the same frame rate as before, you get better quality

That's because it's a combo of DLSS and FSR—
it's the FSR side (the tech Sony uses) that's garbage 🥺

The reason it ended up this way is that
Nvidia didn't unlock frame generation for the Switch 2, and that's on them 🥺

There's no way frame gen could work on the Switch 2's hand-me-down RTX 3000-series architecture and its pathetically few Tensor cores

Even DLSS's frame gen becomes useless when the base framerate is garbage—under 30fps—since the added latency gets way too big and quality can't be maintained

    71AnonymousOct 3, 2026 12:10
    Re: #69
It is heavier than the old scaling method, but:
    – it's still more efficient than native rendering (higher frame rate)

    It's not wrong, though
The base graphics themselves don't get any prettier—
it's more like the shimmering and flickering in the background scenery and around character outlines goes away

If you're playing on a smaller monitor you probably won't notice much
It's the kind of thing that stands out on a big-screen TV
    98AnonymousOct 3, 2026 13:33
Not many PC gamers have a huge monitor, so this feels like tech that really shines on consoles played on a big TV
Flaws that are hard to spot otherwise stand out on a big screen

    Re: #98
Since this targets 1440p output, playing on a 4K TV means it gets stretched and looks worse either way
So ironically, the bigger your 4K TV, the uglier it looks

    Re: #100
The base PS5's performance mode was already targeting 1440p-1080p to begin with
QSSR is meant to be effective when you're playing in performance mode

    Re: #100
So even though it's marketed as '4K-capable' hardware,
Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and the Switch 2 editions of Zelda BotW/TotK
all have PS3-tier garbage graphics that only get upscaled to 1440p anyway—
so basically, the Switch 2 is trash?

Background and key points of discussion

QSSR is said to be a software-based redesign of “PSSR” — the AI upscaler built exclusively for the PS5 Pro — adapted for the base PS5, which has no dedicated AI chip. The thread’s discussion centered on two main points. One was the trade-off with processing load: since it lacks an AI core, QSSR ends up heavier than conventional upscaling, but it was noted to still be lighter than native resolution while also improving image quality. The other was DF’s own credibility — commenters brought up its past backlash for gushing over early DLSS, as well as its pre-recorded praise of Xbox titles, questioning how objective its reviews really are. There was also the point that, since the output target sits around 1440p, a large 4K TV can actually make the stretched image look rougher — a case where the effect depends heavily on your setup, and is easy to misunderstand.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Digital Foundry heaps praise on Sony’s QSSR: “Sony has pulled off a technical triumph here!”.”

  • Gears of War: E-Day Tops 20,000 Concurrent Players on Steam Early Access — Best Series Launch Ever

The Steam version of “Gears of War: E-Day,” the new title from Microsoft’s Xbox studios, has launched into early access and surpassed 20,000 concurrent players, marking the best start in the series’ history. The game has no PS5 version and is Xbox/PC exclusive only, but its strong Steam debut became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. At the same time, some pointed out that the numbers look weak compared to the early-access scale once hit by “Starfield,” a title that posted huge results as an Xbox exclusive — and once counterarguments noting that Game Pass players aren’t included in the Steam count entered the mix, opinion split over how to read the figures.

Wolverine already proved stuff like this can get through Japan's CERO rating, so with a few edits (let's be honest, mostly the sex scenes) it'll pass fine

This is just a title for the cost-cutting demon (Microsoft's efficiency-obsessed brass) to measure how little the trash-can faithful (a derogatory nickname for Xbox fans, after the console's boxy shape) actually spend, so there's probably no sequel coming

Gears makes most of its money off in-game skins and microtransactions, so it actually rakes in plenty?

Gears is this weird game where, somehow, Mexico got pushed so hard that there are now more Mexican players than American ones

Even the trash-can crowd's knowledge of Gears stops at the "Plan B" jokes from the first game — nobody's actually playing it

With QSSR (a cross-platform resolution-scaling feature being discussed in the thread), every game on the crappy Xbox (a derisive nickname for the console) is already a downgraded version anyway

The fight against the Locust for humanity's survival was already wrapped up in 3 — the real mistake was deciding to write a sequel after that

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Gears of War series has long been developed as an Xbox-centric IP, and it’s worth noting upfront that this latest entry, “E-Day,” has no PS5 version and is positioned as an Xbox/PC (including Steam) exclusive. Early access refers to giving a subset of players advance access before the official launch, and Steam’s concurrent-player count only reflects people playing through Steam specifically. The 230,000 early-access figure for “Starfield” raised for comparison in the thread is cited as a benchmark representing the largest scale ever for an Xbox-exclusive title, and opinions split over whether this time’s 20,000 looks weak by comparison. That said, this title is also being offered simultaneously on Microsoft’s subscription service Game Pass, and players who access it via Game Pass aren’t reflected in the Steam concurrent count. The thread repeatedly raised this distinction, and it’s worth noting for readers that several posters argued it’s premature to judge the overall level of excitement from the Steam figure alone.
