  • Micron CEO: ‘FY27 and FY28 Will Be Even Tighter’ — 5ch: ‘Wait, Wasn’t It Supposed to Calm Down by 2028?’

According to Reuters, Micron’s CEO said memory and storage supply-demand conditions are expected to tighten even further in fiscal years 2027 and 2028 compared to fiscal 2026. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, users discussed why manufacturers aren’t ramping up production despite continued AI-driven demand, with some pointing out that new fabs likely won’t come online until 2029-2030 at the earliest, while others brought up past examples of makers who nearly went under after overexpanding production. Meanwhile, on the question of when the AI bubble will burst, the thread split between those arguing it “can’t possibly burst” given the US-China development race, and reactions to Sony’s already-pricier new smartphone — with the conversation branching off in different directions.

“We expect the supply-demand environment for memory and storage to tighten further in fiscal years 2027 and 2028, compared to fiscal 2026.”

They keep saying 'it's for AI' but why hasn't anyone ramped up production when the situation hasn't changed in years?

That'd make sense if it were smooth sailing for at least the next 10 years, but nobody knows when the bubble will pop. 2028-2030 is basically going to be the chicken-race period.

Bubble-level demand like this can't last forever — inventory is bound to pile up eventually, prices will crash, and someone will jump the gun with a fire sale. So this is probably just a warning shot at any 'traitor' who'd break ranks on keeping prices up.

Corporate demand for AI isn't slowing down at all. If anything, companies are doubling down on AI like 'fall behind and you're dead,' so even if they wanted to stop, they can't — stopping means death, so nothing's going to change. Even companies with zero obvious connection to AI are starting to use it.

By the way, Kioxia is expanding its fabs. Though since the scale is too small to move prices overall, it'll probably just mean bigger profits for Kioxia alone.

The reason other companies don't jump straight into memory production is that the know-how is hard to master, plus memory is inherently cheap — apparently if it ever became widespread and prices fell, it wouldn't be profitable anymore anyway.

    37AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:25
    Re: #35
There aren't, actually. The capital investment required is so massive that most makers got weeded out. A memory maker CEO even called out Apple by name, saying buyers hammered prices down so hard during the cheap years that it held back capital investment.
    48AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:45
    Re: #35
There aren't 'tons' of them. It's an industry with a handful of dominant players where you don't even need a cartel — you can just read everyone else's pricing. It's also the end result of getting squeezed on price until the weeding-out went too far, so honestly both the manufacturers who use memory and ordinary consumers bullied the memory industry too much.

Game consoles really should go back to basics. RAM only needs to be about GameCube-level plus some file cache. Cap each game's size at around 8GB and even 128MB of storage would be plenty.

Just stop obsessing over graphics — a high-resolution GameCube-equivalent is all we need.

Smartphones prioritize social media and web browsing, so they'll never end up being used in a way that gets in the way of that. As a result they stay built around touch controls, which leaves an opening for consoles to exploit.

    Re: #84
That was Acer talking — a company that doesn't even make memory.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The DRAM and NAND semiconductor memory industry is dominated by a handful of players — Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron, and Kioxia (formerly Toshiba) — with capital investment running into the hundreds of billions to trillions of yen, which makes new entrants rare. There really have been cases in the past where a production race ended in a price collapse that pushed a manufacturer to the brink of financial crisis, and the “company that nearly collapsed from overproduction” mentioned in the thread is likely referring to this historical boom-bust cycle. Also, new fabs take several years from groundbreaking to full operation, so even if a decision to expand production were made today, it wouldn’t show up in the market until around 2029-2030. One more thing worth noting: this “tightening forecast” comes from Micron’s own CEO, not from an objective third-party supply-demand analysis. Since the remark also touches on the company’s own earnings outlook and pricing leverage, it’s no guarantee of future supply-demand conditions — and some in the thread floated the view that it’s really just a “warning shot to keep prices from dropping.”

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Micron CEO: “Memory and storage supply-demand conditions will tighten further in FY27 and FY28, compared to FY26”.”

  • MS Exec Says Kojima’s New Games Won’t Be Xbox Exclusives — 5ch: “If True, This Is Great”

Xbox’s Asha Sharma reportedly told The New York Times that Hideo Kojima’s upcoming titles ‘OD’ and ‘PHYSINT’ will not be Xbox exclusives. Kojima had previously turned to Microsoft for backing after funding talks with Sony Interactive Entertainment broke down, and word of this exchange getting out set Japan’s 5ch “Hardware/Industry” (Geha) board abuzz. While some in the thread welcomed the reversal on exclusivity, others questioned whether the relationship with Sony has truly been mended, raised concerns about release timing and the PS5’s remaining lifespan, and the thread devolved into the usual console-war slapfight.

OD and PHYSINT confirmed for PS multiplatform release

“They will NOT be exclusive! Asha Sharma confirmed to The New York Times that legendary developer Hideo Kojima’s games will not be Xbox exclusives.

She also said work will continue on bringing games considered Xbox “exclusives” over to PlayStation.

Background and key points of this story

The source here is a New York Times interview with Xbox executive Asha Sharma, and the gist of it is that ‘OD’ and ‘PHYSINT’ will not be made Xbox exclusives — this is not an official announcement that PS5 versions are coming. The thread title’s “release confirmed” is a leap to conclusions; in reality, only a policy of avoiding exclusivity was indicated. The backdrop is that Kojima’s funding negotiations with Sony Interactive Entertainment broke down, after which he continued development with Microsoft’s backing. The NYT report notes the deal came in below what Xbox normally spends developing a premium title and included film and TV rights, suggesting this was more than just an ordinary game development contract. The thread split over whether walking back exclusivity signals reconciliation with Sony or is simply a business decision, and over when a PS5 version might actually arrive — with ‘Death Stranding,’ which took years to reach Xbox after debuting as a PlayStation exclusive, cited as a precedent.

There were cynics like this when Microsoft and Sega teamed up too lol
Though since Persona still comes out on PlayStation, I guess you could argue it still falls under "pointless posturing."

    Background and Key Points

This agreement is a “publisher license agreement,” not a declaration of hardware exclusivity. In fact, Grand Theft Auto VI, developed by Take-Two’s subsidiary Rockstar Games, is still slated for release on PS5 — and within the thread, posts mistaking this for an exclusivity deal were corrected by others noting it doesn’t override existing agreements. What drew more attention was the absence of any announcement that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has signed a similarly long-term deal. Combined with the lack of clarity around the timing of Sony’s next-generation console, this became a talking point about a possible gap in platform strategy — though it’s worth noting this is purely speculation from 5ch users, not an official statement from Sony.

  • PS5’s 2026 First-Party Lineup Looks Thin — Fans Say It’s All Riding on GTA6

With 2026 down to its final three months and the year-end sales rush setting in, a thread titled “The Sense of Stagnation Hanging Over PlayStation” went up on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Posters noted that confirmed PS5 titles for next year are limited to just a handful — Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion, Kingdom Hearts IV — and that even the first-party lineup is dominated by titles already flagged as struggling, like Marathon and Saros. As for GTA6, billed as this year’s biggest showcase title, posters also raised concerns about the PS5 Pro’s supply shortage and the mismatch in timing with Sony’s plans to eventually phase out physical media, with opinions split on whether GTA6’s sales momentum will eventually fade.

With 2026 down to its final three months, the game industry is heading into the year-end sales season.
Nintendo is hoping for a strong start with "The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary," releasing the Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive title "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" on November 5.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is marking Xbox's 25th anniversary with plans for an Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition and a matching controller.

The only thing I'm worried about with GTA6 is the file size.
Surely it won't blow past 300GB right out of the gate.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Since 2024, Sony itself has stated it’s moving toward a future without physical media on PS5, and the thread repeatedly pointed out that GTA6’s release timing clashes with that stated direction. It’s also worth noting that the sales estimates floated for titles like FF7 Revelation and the Monster Hunter Wilds expansion are just personal guesses extrapolated from previous entries, not official figures. Where opinion in the thread split was over whether GTA6 can actually drive the platform forward, and how seriously to take the slump in first-party titles. Posters even disagreed on the underlying premise — unlike the PS4 era, how large is the audience that actually buys a PlayStation for its first-party lineup in the first place? That disagreement points to a broader difficulty: you can’t gauge the real state of the market just by counting how many new releases are coming.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, Geha board) thread “2026: The Sense of Stagnation Hanging Over PlayStation.”

  • MAGES.: “We’re Incredibly Grateful We Could Release on Switch” — No Packaged PS Version Comes Down to Profitability

Hidekazu Shibata of game developer MAGES. told gamer.ne.jp in an interview that “we’re incredibly grateful we were able to release on Nintendo Switch,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. The company, known for adventure games like the Steins;Gate series, explained that it prioritizes Switch and PC because they let its older fanbase keep playing without having to upgrade to the latest hardware. At the same time, MAGES. doesn’t release packaged (physical) versions for PlayStation, prompting comments on the thread like “PS can’t even hit the minimum production run” and “profitability is an even harsher word than ‘barrier,’” which spiraled into a broader debate tied to the recent wave of third parties pulling back from PS5.

    — With the Historia rollout, you’ve now built an environment where the whole series

can be played on current hardware. What kind of response have you seen from new players, and how does that feel so far?

    Pulling out the key part:

"Of course we have older users, but at that age they tend to stop buying the latest consoles, which risks them retiring from gaming altogether. It's hard to ask them to buy the newest hardware, so as long as they have a Switch and a reasonably recent PC, we want to keep an environment where they can still play MAGES.'s adventure games."

Sounds like they want to plant roots on Switch (or really, Nintendo hardware) and PC, since those can pull in young new players. In other words, the implication is that they've judged PS can't bring in young new players.

Given the part about not being able to ask people to buy the newest hardware, this reads more like a declaration that they'll make a console roughly one generation behind the cutting edge their main platform. Switch game cards being compatible with Switch 2 also works in their favor there.

Indies have a somewhat different situation too…
They simply don't have the resources to go multiplatform from the start.
So they have no choice but to narrow down which hardware to target, or prioritize and release in order — and that order ends up being PC > Switch >>> PS >>> Xbox.
Well, in the end, if you say that's just the difference in expected sales, that's that.
    47AnonymousOct 1, 2026 10:09

That's exactly the number-one example of something that isn't profitable.
It was convenient for SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) to pad their numbers with,
but from the publishers' side, those were hollow, papier-mâché figures with no substance behind them — so they turned their backs on it.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Producing a packaged version only makes financial sense if a certain minimum production run can be guaranteed — without that volume, retailers are less likely to place orders in the first place. This point came up repeatedly in the thread: “profitability,” in this context, isn’t just about differences in sales figures, but reflects a manufacturing-side judgment about whether distribution costs can be justified. Another factor at play is that Switch game cards are compatible with Nintendo’s next-generation Switch 2, giving third parties a stable, long-term platform to build on. At the same time, some in the thread argued that the free-play program PlayStation’s camp used to run in the past obscured actual sales figures, ultimately lowering publishers’ assessment of the platform — a reminder that this isn’t simply a case of companies “abandoning PS,” but a tangle of compounding factors worth keeping in mind.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, aka “Geha”) thread “[Gratitude] MAGES.: “We’re incredibly grateful we could release on Switch. There’s a profitability reason we don’t release packaged versions on PS”.”

  • Xbox Chief Denies ‘Preparing for Sale’ Rumors — 5ch: ‘They Should Drop the Console to ¥30,000 and Game Pass to ¥100’

Xbox head Asha Sharma revealed that she’s repeatedly fielded the same question from industry insiders and fans at multiple events, including BlizzCon: “Is Microsoft preparing to sell off Xbox?” In an interview with windowscentral.com, she addressed the speculation directly and pushed back against it. When the story reached Japanese gaming forums, opinions split between those who see the barrage of questions itself as “proof Xbox is cornered” and those who dismiss it as “just one of those questions that comes up all the time.” The discussion also branched into a debate over how differently Microsoft and Sony each position their gaming businesses.

At the last several Xbox-related events I’ve attended, including BlizzCon, I’ve gotten the same question over and over from industry people and fans: “Is Microsoft preparing to sell off Xbox?”

One question that’s been coming up a lot from journalists lately concerns the theory that Xbox is “up for sale” — and Sharma addressed that theory head-on today.

Things have gotten so bad Asha herself had to step in and put out the fire directly, and yet here on Geha (5ch's hardware/industry board) everyone's still cheerfully yelling 'but Sony did it too!'

If 'They said they won't sell it but it's actually baaaad!' counts as logic, then by the same token you could say the same thing about Sony: 'Concord bombed and now Wolverine's bombing too, so it's baaaad!' And you could just as easily say the same nonsense about Nintendo: 'Switch 2 raised its price and sales are dropping, so it's baaaad!' That would have to be allowed too.

    Ridiculous.

That's exactly the point — the fact that the negative narrative is being believed at all IS the problem.
Consoles get bought based on their perceived future, and games get made the same way, so once people think there's no future in it, it's over.

    Fair point.
Well, the reason Xbox is struggling is closely tied to the fact that the whole 'big studio, big-budget title' business model is hitting its structural limits — and that's not something SIE is immune to either.
It's a bit different, but the same goes for Nintendo now that the one-console-per-person model is getting harder to pull off.
    41AnonymousOct 1, 2026 07:51
If anything, it's arguably the most momentum any platform has right now.
With Play Anywhere it's going head-to-head with Steam directly, and they've pulled in Kojima's games too.
Doesn't matter much in Japan, but they also just announced a disc-to-digital feature so Xbox One-era disc libraries don't go to waste.
None of that is something Sony can pull off.
If it still doesn't sell after all that, well, there's not much more they could do.

New York Times demands Asha apologize to Sony for poaching Kojima

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/HTfOegRW4AA28h8.jpg

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

These remarks stem from an interview with the English-language gaming outlet windowscentral.com, in which Xbox chief Asha Sharma moved to tamp down speculation by stating she has no intention of selling. It’s easy to misread the headline “Xbox is being sold” in isolation, but it’s worth stressing that she’s denying the rumor — this isn’t a report confirming that a sale has been decided. Opinion in the thread split over whether the sheer volume of repeated questions is itself “a sign Xbox is in trouble,” or “just one of those questions that comes up all the time.” The discussion also branched into the differing positions of the two companies: gaming is a secondary business for Microsoft, while Sony treats its entertainment business, games included, as a core pillar of revenue. Note that figures like layoff counts mentioned in the replies are unverified hearsay from posters, not facts confirmed within the article itself.

  • Sega: ‘Yes, We Have Sequel Plans for Shin Sakura Taisen — and We Want to Remaster 1 Through V Too’

A lengthy interview with Sega’s Akira Nishino and Takaharu Terada in the latest issue of Famitsu has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board. In it, the pair said they “don’t want the idea of a Shin Sakura Taisen sequel to stay just a fantasy,” and also expressed a desire to “somehow make it happen” — remastering the original entries 1 through V for current hardware. In the thread, many posters pointed to a PS exclusivity deal and rights issues reportedly tied to Shin Sakura Taisen’s development as the reason remasters of the older games haven’t materialized, with plenty of comments calling for the older titles to be reassessed and ported before any new game, alongside harsh criticism of Shin Sakura Taisen itself.

Like I said earlier, it's probably a contract issue, or otherwise rights issues around the music and such.

    Re: #95
Yep, that's right — and that's exactly why the sticking point is that the Ogami arc of Sakura Taisen ended without ever wrapping up

    Background and Points of Debate

The Sakura Wars (Sakura Taisen) series began with the 1996 Sega Saturn original, and Shin Sakura Taisen, released in 2019, was developed as a PS4-exclusive title, with series creator Ōji Hiroi no longer involved in production. The original entries 1 through V have so far only received home console ports in limited forms, such as the PSP versions, with no expansion onto platforms like Steam. What split the thread was whether this wall against porting comes down to technical reasons or to contractual and rights-related restrictions — and either way, none of it goes beyond speculation, since there’s no confirmed information. One point readers can easily get wrong: Sega’s comments here amount only to statements of “plans” and “intentions,” not an official announcement that a sequel or remasters are actually happening.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt/summary of the 5ch Hardware/Industry (Geha) board thread “[PS5] Sega: “We don’t want the idea of a new Shin Sakura Taisen to stay just a fantasy, and we want to somehow remaster 1 through V for current hardware”“.

  • Xbox’s “Discs to Digital” Officially Launches — Sega Titles Now Included

Microsoft has officially launched “Discs to Digital” today, a program that lets owners trade in their physical discs for digital copies, and Sega titles — previously excluded — have now been added to the lineup. The program works even on already-supported Xbox One consoles, meaning the only major third parties still not on board are Square Enix and Bandai Namco. On 5ch’s hardware/industry threads, discussion centered on why so many third parties agreed to license their games for this, and why Sony isn’t doing something similar.

Just insert your physical disc and get a digital copy in return (works on Xbox One consoles too)

Sega games, previously unsupported, are now included

That leaves only Square Enix and Bandai Namco among major publishers still not participating

Oh, so it's outsold Forza now?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Discs to Digital works by reading a unique identifier burned into the disc to verify ownership and then granting the matching digital copy — a mechanism that, as posters in the thread pointed out, makes it technically difficult to bring original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles on board, since those use a different (or nonexistent) identifier scheme. Meanwhile, PlayStation discs don’t carry the same kind of identifier, which is part of why Sony reportedly can’t easily roll out a similar program. As for why so many third parties agreed to license their titles, one view in the thread held that “if you can’t make money on the secondhand market anyway, it’s better for the revenue to go to the developer instead.” Opinions were split on whether the program is really a push toward a disc-less future or, conversely, a way to add value to physical discs and prolong their life — no clear consensus emerged.

  • Wolverine Sweeps the ‘Crappy Game of the Year’ Nominations — 5ch Dubs It ‘The Bug-Hunting Game’

On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Console Wars”) board, a thread went up for the annual year-end tradition of nominating candidates for the board’s “Crappy Game of the Year.” The thread quickly became dominated by one title: the big-budget action game Marvel’s Wolverine, reportedly made on a ¥48 billion (roughly $320 million) budget. Users piled on with reports of rampant bugs, the game being beatable in about 15 hours, and clips of glitches like trees that simply won’t cut down — and with no real rival candidate emerging, the mood turned into an outright “Wolverine landslide.” The discussion also spilled over into trade-in prices, comparisons of unit sales against Spider-Man 2 (20,039 vs. 324,710 copies), and worries about distribution once physical discs are phased out, keeping the thread churning with mixed opinions throughout.

    Re: #196
Then is there anything worse than Wolverine?

Background and key points of this discussion

“Crappy Game of the Year” (KOTY) is an unofficial tradition dating back to the 2000s on 2ch/5ch, in which users vote each year on the most disappointing games, and the Hardware & Industry (“Console Wars”) board runs its own genre-by-genre nominations every year-end. This time, Marvel’s Wolverine dominated the thread as posters piled on about its bugs, its short 15-hour clear time, and its high development budget, with almost no other contender emerging — leaving the thread with an overwhelming sense that “Wolverine wins in a landslide.” That said, as commenters in the thread themselves point out, KOTY picks tend to get tangled up with plain like-or-dislike toward specific hardware or titles, and the thread often wraps up each year without a clear, well-reasoned verdict. It’s also worth noting that the sales figures and trade-in prices cited here are largely drawn from social media and aggregator sites, and may not necessarily match official manufacturer figures.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware & Industry / “Console Wars”) thread “Three months left in the year — let’s pick this year’s Console Wars board Crappy Game of the Year nominees.”

  • Ace Combat 8: 5ch Split on First-Week Sales Forecast — ‘Here We Go Again, But Will You Buy It?’

On the Game/Hardware board (Geha), a thread predicting first-week sales for Bandai Namco’s new title Ace Combat 8 was heating up. First-week sales figures for the previous title, Ace Combat 7, differ depending on the source — 202,000 units according to Media Create, versus 158,968 according to Famitsu — and replies were immediately divided over which figure to use as the baseline. On top of that, some pointed out that Ace Combat 7 came with a PS4-exclusive pre-order bonus (a copy of the previous game), whereas Ace Combat 8’s bonus is the same across all platforms, removing the factor that had favored PlayStation sales. Others speculated that since Bandai Namco isn’t a games-only company, there may be little sense of urgency internally about weak sales performance.

If it sold 200k on PS4, normally on PS5 it should be roughly half that, around 100k (Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, and the Warriors titles all saw sales halve too)

Played 7 on Switch and honestly wasn't that fun
It felt less like pure dogfighting and more like being forced through ground-attack missions and annoying "buzzwire" precision segments (like the wire-loop game where touching the wire buzzes you)
8 doesn't look much different from the last one at a glance either
Also, when you roll your plane the whole screen rotates with it — a terrible design choice you can't turn off, which makes it harder to control
There's supposedly a "Standard" control scheme for beginners,
but that comes with the downside of wide, sluggish turns, which also sucks

If none of that's been fixed, I probably won't buy it

Background and Key Points of Debate

Ace Combat 7 launched on January 17, 2019, with first-week sales reported as 202,000 units by Media Create and 158,968 units by Famitsu. In Japan, home console sales figures are independently estimated by two separate research firms, Media Create and Famitsu, and discrepancies between their reported numbers — often due to differences in which stores are surveyed — are not unusual. In the thread, opinion split over which figure should serve as the baseline for predicting Ace Combat 8’s first week, and another point of debate was whether sales would drop off from the second week onward as a reaction to the previous title’s reliance on limited-edition pre-order bonuses. Bandai Namco also operates a diversified business spanning toys and hobby goods, amusement facilities, and mobile games, and this structure — where weak console game sales don’t immediately threaten the company as a whole — is likely behind the thread’s comments about a ‘lack of urgency.’
