  • Beloved Picture Book ‘Guri and Gura’ Sparks Backlash — Publisher Fukuinkan Shoten Apologizes and Deletes Post

On September 7, children’s book publisher Fukuinkan Shoten deleted and apologized for a post on X (formerly Twitter) related to its flagship title “Guri and Gura,” which has sold over 5.71 million copies to date, after receiving numerous complaints that the content was “inappropriate.” The company says it will strengthen its post-review process going forward. However, the original article doesn’t specify exactly what about the post was considered problematic, and the 5ch thread saw a mix of confused comments wondering what the issue even was, along with opinions about the fact that a long-established publisher was forced to apologize over a single social media post.

In a statement posted to its official X account, the company said, “Regarding the post we made from this account yesterday, we received numerous comments that the wording was inappropriate.” It went on to apologize: “We take everyone’s feedback seriously and have deleted the post in question. Going forward, we will strengthen our review process for posts to prevent this from happening again. We sincerely apologize for this incident.”

    98AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:57
The author has a choice in the matter — maybe she wanted a fresh start with her new surname?
Plenty of university researchers keep using their maiden name too
And plenty of men marry into their wife's family too, so keeping the old surname isn't only a women's thing
If this author deliberately chose her new surname and outsiders are turning it into a joke, that's kind of sad for her

    Re: #98
For researchers, changing your surname means your pre-marriage papers and research get hard to find in searches
which is basically the same as having all your achievements erased
so a name change from marriage can be a huge blow

Background and Key Points of This Story

Fukuinkan Shoten is a long-established children’s book publisher founded in 1916, and “Guri and Gura” is known as a long-running bestseller since its 1967 publication. This apology came after the company’s post was flagged as “inappropriate,” but the original article never reveals the actual wording of the post, leaving readers unclear on exactly what the issue was. On the 5ch thread, comments split between discomfort at a major publisher posting in such a casual tone and pushback calling the critics “annoying.” The discussion also gradually broadened into the question of how authors and researchers who change their surname through marriage or divorce can maintain continuity with their previous name — a topic some posters related to as a familiar social issue. That said, it’s worth noting that whether this theme was actually connected to the content of the original post can’t be confirmed from the article alone, and remains speculation within the thread.

    11AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:41
Splitting it into a trilogy already makes it way harder to carry into the future.
You need real commitment just to play through it, so newcomers won't touch it.
    12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:42
By 'carry forward' they mean 'cash in,' basically (繋ぐ, "carry forward," doubles here as a jab at just milking the IP).

If they'd just made it one game across PS4/PS5 plus Steam, with a later Switch 2 port, it could've sold 5 million copies and kept the IP alive.
They've done real damage to the company.

And for a normal publicly traded company, not being able to cut Horii loose even though he hasn't put out a Dragon Quest in over 10 years is pretty messed up too.

Because the models were low-poly, manga-flavored character designs and dialogue felt natural (same goes for the pixel-art FFs).

    106AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:14
    Re: #103
FF9, which Nomura had zero involvement in, still has plenty of strong, popular characters, so it's not really about Nomura one way or the other.

16 just had an incompetent team behind it, plain and simple.

    Background and Points of Debate

The FF7 remake trilogy began with “Remake” in 2020 and “Rebirth” in 2024, and now concludes with “Revelation.” The decision to split it up stems partly from the fact that combining a large-scale, fully-voiced, high-fidelity remake into a single game would balloon both development time and cost — a point some in the thread acknowledged. At the same time, many voiced concerns about how high a barrier this creates for newcomers unfamiliar with the original who’d have to play through an entire trilogy, and questioned whether enough consideration was given to PS4 owners being pushed to repurchase on new platforms. Official sales figures have been released for each installment, but the numbers vary, so it’s worth noting that characterizations like “flopped” in the thread are speculation rather than confirmed fact. The discussion also expanded into debates over character design and comparisons with “FF16,” suggesting opinions are split not just over sales but over the series’ entire approach to development.

  • Woman in Her 60s Dies After Car Sinks in Flooded Underpass in Iwaki, Fukushima — 5ch: ‘If You’ve Never Seen It Before, It Just Looks Like a Normal Road’

On the morning of the 7th, two cars sank in floodwater during heavy rain at an underpass in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, and a woman in her 60s who was in one of them was taken to the hospital unconscious, where she was later confirmed dead. Heavy rain from Typhoon No. 24 and the autumn rain front is believed to be the cause, and a car also flooded at a separate underpass elsewhere in the city. On 5ch, photos from the scene drew comments like “a flooded road surface really can look like a normal road” and “I get why someone driving through for the first time couldn’t tell,” alongside debate over whether EVs or gasoline cars are safer when submerged, and criticism over who is actually responsible for deciding to close underpasses during heavy rain.

Fukushima Minyu Shimbun — Published Mon, 9/7 at 12:26

At around 7:45 a.m. on the 7th, a passerby called emergency services (119) reporting “a car is submerged” at an underpass on a city road in Kashimamachi-Yoneda, Iwaki City. According to the city fire department, two cars flooded; a woman in her 60s from the city was rescued from one of them unconscious and taken to the hospital, where she was later confirmed dead. The occupant of the other car reportedly escaped on their own. The scene is near the “Iwaki Evelia” commercial complex.

Separately, one car also flooded at an underpass in Nishikimachi-Tokuriki in the same city, but its occupant escaped unaided. Heavy rain fell across the city that morning due to Typhoon No. 24 and the autumn rain front.

Under the IP67 waterproof rating, it's built to withstand being submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes while stationary.
It also has a safety feature that automatically cuts off the high-voltage battery when it detects flooding or impact beyond a certain level, so there's no risk of electric shock.

    An underpass with no sidewalk

Background and Key Points of This Story

An underpass — a stretch where the road dips below the surrounding grade — sits lower than its surroundings, so during heavy rain drainage can’t keep up and it floods within a short time. One factor behind accidents like this is that a flooded road surface reflects light, especially at night or in rain, making it hard to distinguish from an ordinary paved road. Deciding to close a road is normally the job of the road authority (the municipality or police), using water-level sensors or patrols, but some areas have so many such sites that immediate action everywhere isn’t realistic. In the thread, posters weighed EVs’ flood resistance (IP67 waterproofing plus an automatic battery cutoff) against gas cars’ risk of water getting into the exhaust — but both become undrivable past a certain water depth regardless, and what tends to get overlooked is that the real countermeasure isn’t which type of car you drive, it’s simply not driving into a flooded road at all.

  • Folk singer Matsuyama Chiharu reveals first grandchild’s name is “Selen” — “Ordinary names are disappearing” comment sparks reaction

Folk singer Matsuyama Chiharu (70) revealed on his radio show broadcast September 6 that his first grandchild’s name is “Selen.” Matsuyama reportedly also remarked, “Ordinary names really are disappearing, aren’t they.” On 5channel, the comment set off a wave of speculation about the origin of the name “Selen,” with users debating whether it derives from “Selene,” the Greek word for “moon,” or evokes the chemical element selenium (atomic number 34). The thread turned into more of an etymology discussion than a debate over the naming choice itself. Some also pointed out that what counts as an “ordinary” name shifts with each generation, noting that old-fashioned women’s names like “Matsu” and “Tome” would seem unusual today.

Folk singer Matsuyama Chiharu (70) appeared live on FM NACK5’s “Matsuyama Chiharu ON THE RADIO” (Sundays at 9 PM) on the 6th, where a moment arose involving his reaction to a listener’s email.

During the live broadcast, Matsuyama read out several listener emails. In this episode, he reacted to one from a listener going by “Miyuto.” “Miyuto… huh. That’s another unusual name,” he said thoughtfully.

    Re: #67
He's said he hated always getting grouped with the girls on class rosters because of it

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Japanese, “Selen” refers to the chemical element selenium (atomic number 34, also known as an antioxidant supplement ingredient), but overseas it’s also a common given name derived from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon — and the thread’s etymology debate reflects that dual meaning. What counts as an “ordinary” name has shifted dramatically over time: names like “Tome,” “Matsu,” and “Kin” were mainstream from the Meiji through Showa eras, while in recent years naming trends have favored the sound of a name over the meaning of its kanji. The thread showed a mix of reactions — some pointed out the irony that Matsuyama himself would likely have criticized the name had it belonged to someone else’s grandchild, while others took a more positive view of naming diversity. The original article also introduces several other children’s names read out by listeners that Matsuyama reacted to on air (such as Kouya, Gen, and Miyuto), and the thread’s discussion unfolds partly in comparison to those names.

  • Yu Aoi Raves About Morning Musume ’26: “Giving It Your All Is So Wonderful It Makes Me Cry”

On the radio program “#Flat” hosted by Panther Mukai and Yaren’z, actor Yu Aoi’s comments after watching a live performance video of Morning Musume ’26 that moved her to tears were introduced on 5channel’s Hello!Project board. Yu Aoi had originally been a supporter of ANGERME, but in November 2025 she made headlines for attending Juice=Juice’s Nippon Budokan concert; this time her praise for Morning Musume drew a flood of fan reactions. In the thread, opinions were divided over how to interpret her “oshi-hen” (switching which idol/group you support) and over comparisons of ticket sell-out rates and popularity between Morning Musume and Juice=Juice.

    Background and Discussion Points

Yu Aoi is known as a longtime Hello!Project fan who has mainly supported ANGERME, but she made headlines on 5channel back in November 2025 when it emerged that she’d attended Juice=Juice’s Nippon Budokan concert. This time, her praise for a Morning Musume ’26 live video sparked the discussion, and the thread expanded into comparisons between the groups. The focal point was how to weigh Juice=Juice’s “stability” — often described as lacking in change — against Morning Musume’s combination of “reassurance and excitement.” Ticket sell-out status was also raised in several replies, but it should be noted that these are individual posters’ personal observations, not something confirmed by official announcements.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5channel (Hello!Project board) thread “Yu Aoi passionately raves about Morning Musume ’26’s live show on the radio: “The wonder of giving it your all — an energy so joyful it makes me cry”.”

Speaking of "codename The End," the most famous bearer of that name
is The ENDO, the boss character from the stealth action game
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (MGS3)
and its remake, METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER.

    Background and Talking Points

“Hello! Q&A” is a regular daily segment run by Hello! Project’s official social media, and because it simply lines up each member’s individual answer as-is, the differences in personality tend to stand out. The thread also quoted a log of the same segment from November 22, 2021, with plenty of posts enjoying the comparison between past answers — like Kanazawa Tomoko’s “Isabella” and Inaba Manaka’s “Manakan Dawson” — and this year’s crop. The centerpiece of the discussion, Endo Ayakari’s “The ENDO,” evoked THE END, the boss character from Metal Gear Solid 3, thanks to the close spelling, and reactions from game fans helped fuel the thread. In the exchange around Kudo Yume (nicknamed “Tako,” or Octopus), a bit of trivia — “an octopus’s 8 limbs are arms, not legs” — got reinforced by quoting her own 2019 blog post, which highlights something not obvious from the main text alone: how long-past official posts keep getting dug up and referenced by fans.

    Background and Key Points

The agency’s announcement only states “poor health” and that he will “focus on treatment,” without disclosing a specific diagnosis or symptoms. On 5channel, many comments speculated about mental health issues, but this remains pure speculation and isn’t confirmed by any official source. Ueno is known for his YouTube series visiting haunted spots, which sparked plenty of jokes in the thread about “curses” and “hexes” — these too are just jokes, not facts. Leave-of-absence announcements from Yoshimoto Kogyo talent have become fairly common in recent years, and it’s not unusual for performers to return to work without ever disclosing details; no return date has been given in this case either. Readers should be careful to distinguish between speculative reactions and the agency’s official statement.

  • Shohei Ohtani’s Shock Return Tomorrow Draws Criticism From US Fans

Reports that Shohei Ohtani will make a surprise return to tomorrow’s game have sparked criticism from fans in the US. According to the source article, the decision to return after such a short recovery period drew a wave of criticism calling it “a huge mistake.” In a live-discussion thread on 5ch, posters shared reports that Ohtani — despite being benched to rest — was seen taking batting practice behind the dugout, along with comments attributed to manager Dave Roberts that Ohtani “gets moody when he’s struggling.” Opinions in the thread were split between those who felt rest should come first and those who felt his own desire to play should be respected.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Under his unusual 2023 contract, Ohtani agreed to defer the vast majority of his $700 million deal to later years — a detail that comes up in the thread when discussing his leverage with the team. This story stems from US media questioning reports that Ohtani would return to game action after just four days off following his injury, with the source article itself relaying criticism that the “snap decision” was “a huge mistake.” Opinions in the thread are split between those who believe scheduled rest should take priority and those who feel his own motivation and past rehab experience deserve respect — neither side clearly outnumbers the other. Comments attributed to manager Dave Roberts were unusually candid about Ohtani’s state of mind, drawing attention as a window into the mood inside the team. Note that specifics about the exact injury and its severity remain unclear and somewhat contradictory within the thread, so readers should treat anything beyond the source article as unconfirmed.

  • Marty Friedman Calls Out Foreign Tourists Over Shrine Dance Video

On September 7, Marty Friedman (63), the former Megadeth guitarist who has lived in Japan for decades, quoted a video circulating on X to call out foreign tourists. The clip appears to show a group of tourists dancing at what looks like the Senbon Torii (Thousand Torii Gates) at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. This isn’t the first time Friedman has spoken up — he previously criticized foreigners doing pull-ups on torii gates. On 5ch, while many agreed with his call for restraint, others pushed back, arguing that “shrines have traditionally been used like public parks” and “Japanese people do similar things when they travel abroad,” leaving the thread divided over where to draw the line.

Marty Friedman (63), the world-renowned former Megadeth guitarist, updated his X account by the 7th, issuing a warning to foreign tourists filming dance videos at Japanese shrines and temples.

Friedman quoted a video circulating on social media that appears to show several tourists, believed to be foreigners, dancing at what looks like the Senbon Torii at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Addressing them in English as “Dear tourists,” he asked them to please stop.

    Background and points of debate

Shrines are religious sites, but they’re also open community spaces where things like radio calisthenics or ritual dances take place with the consent of local parishioners and residents — and it’s the ambiguity over “who actually gave permission” that split opinion here. Marty Friedman has lived in Japan since the 1980s and has appeared on domestic music TV programs; this isn’t his first time speaking out, having previously criticized foreigners doing pull-ups on torii gates. In the thread, two competing premises — “unauthorized horseplay” versus “shrines have always been open spaces” — talked past each other without resolution, and as of this report, the exact filming location and circumstances behind the viral video haven’t been independently confirmed. Tourist etiquette also ties into the government’s tourism-promotion policies, but this article limits itself to presenting the various views expressed.

I get what he's saying, but Masaru himself has been hit with pufferfish toxin and ciguatera poisoning from eating weird stuff for views, so he should take a bit better care of himself too
    10AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:17
    That's not a "challenge" — that's just proper hygiene management you're skipping
    11AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:17
Anyone can cook, even an idiot.
But an idiot can't handle hygiene management.

That's why chefs spend years training.

    Re: #11
The "food hygiene supervisor" certification can be gotten just by sitting through a one-day (6-hour) training course lol
    13AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:19
Guess he hit it big as a YouTuber and turned into a businessman
    15AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:20
Hygiene management isn't just about how much money you throw at it —
    mindset is what really matters.
    You need to doubt, doubt, and doubt again;
raw and chilled food is genuinely hard to get right.
    18AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:21
The second there's someone to pin the blame on, everyone piles right in —
but this guy's no saint either
    20AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:22
    Re: #16
Well, if you do a full 360, you end up right back where you started — nothing's actually changed lol
    21AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:23
Serving raw, uncooked food outdoors in this kind of weather in the first place shows he wasn't taking the job seriously
    22AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:24
Aren't YouTubers supposed to be on his side?

This is the first Plesiomonas bacteria detection in a Tokyo food poisoning case in 24 years —
guess he gets to be the 4th such case nationwide?

    Re: #25
"Naru" (to become) is usually used for positive achievements, so Kanio hasn't really "become" anything (wordplay on Komeo's name blended with "kani," meaning crab)
    26AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:27
You're secretly on the side of the crowd bashing Komeo, aren't you?
I see right through you (o^O^)シ彡☆
    32AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:32
He's selling tuna tataki at less than half price —
is he even turning a profit?
    33AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:32
If this happens again down the road, this comment's gonna get thrown right back in his face and he'll get roasted for it lol
    34AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:33
This guy's actually pretty famous, right?
Didn't he get beaten up badly a while back and had his nose fixed after it got busted up?
    68AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:17
    Re: #34
Maybe he refused to get pulled into organized crime?
Sounds like a genuinely upstanding guy
    35AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:33
Not disclosing what actually caused it just lets the reputational damage spread further —
given all this, he probably shouldn't be in the food business anymore

    Re: #35
Thinking about it rationally, since the number of victims kept climbing,
they must have been reusing something.
That means the pathogen count kept building up.
And yet they insist "nothing like that happened!"
Even if management did give the right instructions,
it means someone down the chain failed to follow them.
Either the people at the top are incompetent, the people at the bottom are,
    or both.
    59AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:03
Masaru gets tangled up with sketchy people, but he's actually serious about his work

    Re: #59 Ike-chan lol
    69AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:17
This gave crab a bad image too, honestly

    Re: #69
It'd be great if he showed how he actually processes the crab.
Traditional trades are learned by watching,
and that's exactly what makes YouTube so good for this.
Under old-school apprenticeships you have to squeeze in learning
    between chores —
"watch and learn, steal the technique, don't ask questions!"
and then if you mess up, it's "why didn't you just ask?!"
YouTube cuts out all that wasted friction.
Kids who are good at learning by observation can pick it up there instead.

Background and key points of this story

The “food hygiene supervisor” qualification can be earned with roughly a single day of training, so holding the certificate doesn’t necessarily reflect the real state of hygiene management on-site. Commenters in the thread picked up on exactly this, with many arguing the real problem wasn’t a lack of credentials but practical issues — temperature control and ingredient sourcing — when serving raw and chilled dishes at an outdoor festival. At the same time, Masaru himself reportedly has his own history of falling ill from unusual foods, and some pointed out that critics aren’t necessarily in a position to talk either, so this hasn’t become a simple, one-sided pile-on. The Azabu-Juban Summer Festival is one of Tokyo’s biggest summer festivals, packed with food stalls every year, and a food poisoning outbreak affecting this many people is unusual — attention is now likely to turn to how stall screening and public health authorities respond going forward.
