If anything, that team's stockpiled so many development-slot players who aren't even pro-level — way more than other teams have

    Background and key points

Rui Okoe entered pro baseball with high expectations as a fast, skilled-hitting outfielder, but while with the Yomiuri Giants he became subject to the “active player draft” and ended up traded. The active player draft is a system NPB introduced fairly recently to help players who aren’t getting enough playing time find a new team; since it’s still new and hasn’t built up much of a track record, fan opinion of players caught up in it tends to split sharply. In this thread, unverified speculation about his “conduct” being the cause sat alongside comments defending him as “in a way, the textbook pro baseball player,” with no consensus reached. It’s also worth noting the original article doesn’t specify what the post actually said, so what this “cryptic post” refers to will have to wait on Okoe’s own explanation. The thread also contained some baseless assumptions about race and nationality, which have been left out of this article.

  • Tomomi Itano Sparks Controversy With ‘My Daughter Goes to International School,’ ‘Our Housekeeper Is From Overseas’ Remarks

Former AKB48 member and talent Tomomi Itano (35) has become a hot topic online after revealing on the ABEMA show “Super Nobishiro Time,” which aired on August 26, that her 4-year-old daughter attends an international school and that her family employs a housekeeper from overseas. The show features teenage female contestants being judged, with Itano appearing as a judge. On 5ch, many commenters took the remarks as coming across as a flex (“looks like humble-bragging”), while others took a more measured view, calling it “a common pattern among celebrities” or “not an unusual culture overseas.” Some defended her outright, saying “as long as Itano’s happy, that’s fine” — reactions were split.

Tomomi Itano’s “My Daughter Goes to International School,” “Our Housekeeper Is From Overseas” Remarks Cause a Stir — Why Does the “Glamorous Tomochin” Rub People the Wrong Way?

A surprise proposal with 108 red roses, a married life of being “doted on” by a husband six years her junior, a 4-year-old daughter attending international school, and a housekeeper from overseas — the “glamorous private life” that former AKB48 member, talent, and entrepreneur Tomomi Itano (35) revealed on air has become a hot topic online.

Itano appeared on ABEMA’s “Super Nobishiro Time by Kyou, Suki ni Narimashita,” which aired on August 26. The show has teenage female contestants competing to show off their “cutely calculated charm” techniques, with Itano serving as a judge.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Hiring household help from overseas isn’t unusual in Asian cities like Hong Kong or Singapore, some of which even have established systems for employing Filipino domestic workers. Since this kind of setup isn’t common in Japan, the same facts can easily come across as “flaunting luxury.” Beyond opinions on Itano’s remarks themselves, the thread also featured plenty of entertainment-industry context — discussion of her rising and falling popularity since her AKB48 days, and comparisons with other former members. That said, it’s worth noting that the remarks may simply have reflected the role she was asked to play on the show, and whether they were truly meant as a “flex” is something only Itano herself knows — much of the online interpretation has taken on a life of its own as if it were established fact.

  • 71-Year-Old Woman Caught Red-Handed Shoplifting a Bag of Cucumbers in Oita — 5ch: ‘Even in the Countryside, That’s Pricey’

On the 7th, a 71-year-old unemployed woman living in Oita City was arrested on the spot on suspicion of shoplifting a single bag of cucumbers from a supermarket in the city. She reportedly walked out of the sales floor without paying and was stopped by a store employee. On 5ch, many were struck by just how small the theft was — a single bag of cucumbers — while others questioned why such a minor incident would even make the news, with some speculating it may have been habitual shoplifting. Comments also pointed out the item’s shelf price and the possibility of a lenient, no-prosecution disposition, turning this everyday grocery shoplifting case into an unexpectedly hot topic.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Japan, minor offenses like shoplifting are often resolved through a lenient no-prosecution disposition or a decision to withhold indictment, depending on whether it’s a first offense and how much remorse is shown — the decision to arrest or prosecute isn’t based on the value of the stolen goods alone. The thread raised both the question of why such a minor incident would be reported at all and speculation that the woman may have been a repeat offender, but the original article gives no details on prior convictions or background, so both remain pure speculation. The original article also makes no mention of the suspect’s nationality — only her age and occupation are disclosed. It’s also worth noting, as background to this topic, that local news tends to pick up minor stories on days when little else is happening.

  • Kura Sushi Stock Plunges — Nikkei 225 Removal Suspected Trigger, Chiikawa Collab Backlash Also a Factor

On September 7, 2026, Kura Sushi’s stock price fell, sparking discussion on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board (a general live-discussion board). The thread initially buzzed with criticism over a customer-service dispute in which a staff member allegedly hid a Chiikawa collaboration figure, but posters soon pointed out that the real cause was Kura Sushi’s removal from the Nikkei 225 stock index. Rival chain Sushiro also saw its shares drop after failing to win the Nikkei 225 inclusion it had been expected to get, prompting many posts comparing the two companies’ stock moves. Opinions were also split over the merits of the company’s 10%-discount apology campaign.

Sushiro had been rising on hopes of Nikkei 225 inclusion, but since it wasn't added, it's falling now.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The main point of contention in the thread was what actually caused the stock’s drop. The discussion started out as criticism of a customer-service incident tied to the Chiikawa collaboration, but several posters stepped in to correct the record, noting that “the incident has nothing to do with the stock drop” and that “removal from the Nikkei 225 is what’s really driving it” — pushing back against conflating emotional online backlash with the actual market factors. It’s also worth noting, as background not obvious from the thread text alone, that Sushiro’s stock fell at the same time after failing to win the Nikkei 225 inclusion it had been expected to get, which is why so many posts compared the two companies. Questions were also raised about the 10% discount apology campaign, with some asking exactly who it was meant to apologize to — the murkiness of the company’s crisis response became one of the central threads of debate.

  • Individual JGB sales through online brokerages jump 4.4x as younger investors catch on

Nikkei reports that sales of individual Japanese government bonds (JGBs) through four major online brokerages topped ¥540 billion in January–June 2026, a 4.4x jump from the same period a year earlier. Alongside SBI Securities, Rakuten Securities, and Monex Securities, MUFG eSmart Securities began offering them in November 2025, and the investor base is reportedly widening, especially among younger people. On 5ch, the thread mixed voices in favor — arguing these principal-guaranteed bonds beat a bank deposit — with skeptics noting that, unlike NISA holdings, interest on these bonds is taxable, and questioning the wisdom of locking in a fixed rate just as interest rates are rising. The discussion also touched on a bill from the Democratic Party for the People to make individual JGBs eligible for NISA’s tax-free treatment.

Online brokerages are ramping up sales of individual JGBs. The four major players’ combined sales for January–June 2026 topped ¥540 billion, 4.4 times the same period a year earlier. As a safe asset that still offers a guaranteed yield, the investor base is expanding, particularly among younger people.

We looked at January–June sales figures at the four brokerages offering individual JGBs: SBI Securities, Rakuten Securities, MUFG eSmart Securities, and Monex Securities. MUFG eSmart began handling them in November 2025. Rakuten Securities is also set to, this fall, 3…(continues in the paid edition — 638 characters remaining)

On July 10, 2026, the Democratic Party for the People submitted a "JGB-NISA Bill" to the House of Councillors, seeking to add individual JGBs to the tax-free NISA program and exempt them from inheritance tax too.

    What the DPP is proposing
    Add to NISA:
Include individual JGBs among NISA-eligible purchases, making the resulting gains tax-free.
    Inheritance tax exemption:
Consider exempting JGBs held in NISA accounts from inheritance tax.
    Goal:
Encourage a shift of household assets sitting idle in savings, and promote stable, mid-to-long-term asset building that keeps pace with inflation.

    Current status
Some in the government and ruling party are cautious, worried it could become a tax dodge for the wealthy.
The Financial Services Agency is also wary of folding JGBs directly into NISA, since NISA's stated purpose is to promote a shift "from savings to investment" (i.e., investment in risk assets).

↑ Guess it all hinges on this.

People who don't get this logic are exactly the suckers (kamo) this time around.
If you can't understand it, you're better off not touching bonds at all.
Just stick with a plain fixed deposit.

    Background and points of debate

Individual JGBs come in three types — a 10-year floating rate, a 5-year fixed rate, and a 3-year fixed rate. In exchange for a guarantee against loss of principal, they fall outside NISA’s tax-free treatment, so interest is taxed at 20.315%. With the Bank of Japan currently in a rate-hiking phase and long-term rates trending upward, the freely traded “shin-madosen” JGBs sold over the counter have at times offered a higher yield than the individual 10-year floating bond, which split opinion in the thread over whether now is really the time to buy. This debate comes against the backdrop of a “JGB-NISA Bill,” submitted by the Democratic Party for the People to the House of Councillors in July 2026, which would add individual JGBs to NISA and exempt them from inheritance tax as well. The Financial Services Agency, which frames NISA as a program to promote investment in risk assets, remains cautious about the bill, and its fate could well affect future sales growth. The real question at the heart of this debate is how to weigh the peace of mind of a principal guarantee against the missing tax break and the opportunity cost of locking in a rate while further hikes loom.

  • Fuji TV’s ‘Dokkiri GP’ Sparks Backlash Over Fake Commercial ‘Ambush’ Segment — Even Eiko Koike Left Baffled

During the September 5 broadcast of Fuji TV’s “Celebrities Seriously Brainstormed! Dokkiri GP,” the show aired a “trick” segment that lured three celebrities in with the promise of a commercial appearance, only for just one of them to actually be cast. During the reveal, even Eiko Koike reportedly looked visibly flustered. Reactions on 5channel’s live-discussion thread were split — some viewers shrugged it off as the same kind of format already familiar from shows like “Suiyoubi no Downtown,” while others criticized Fuji TV’s budget and production quality by comparison with other networks.

On September 5, the variety show “Celebrities Seriously Brainstormed! Dokkiri GP” (Fuji TV, hereafter “Dokkiri GP”) aired. The show pulled a commercial-related prank on three celebrities, and the content has since sparked controversy.

The segment in question was titled “We Thought It Was a Quick Commercial Shoot, Then Thought It Was a Pitfall Trap, Then…????”

Feels like Suiyoubi no Downtown gets called out for problems way more often lol

    Background and Key Points

The format used in “Dokkiri GP” — gathering multiple people together when only one will actually be chosen — is nothing new; it’s a technique also used by shows like “Suiyoubi no Downtown.” What divided opinion in the thread wasn’t so much whether the premise itself was acceptable, but the quality of the execution in light of Fuji TV’s recent financial struggles, with many commenters pointing to a lack of budget and creative effort compared to other networks. On the other hand, some posts noted that the performers who weren’t chosen seemed satisfied with their compensation, leading to a more skeptical view of the harsher criticism, since none of the people directly involved had actually complained. Fuji TV has faced growing scrutiny over its management and program production in recent years, and this reaction appears to be part of that broader wave.

    Background and Talking Points

Within Hello! Project, Juice=Juice is known for a style that folds members’ individual specialties into performances — Ruru Danbara’s vocals, Reon Inoue’s vocal percussion, Yuisa Arisawa’s violin, and so on — and this collab MV with Harami-chan is an extension of that same idea. The praise in the YouTube comments reflects that context, but the reaction on 5ch took a different shape: rather than focusing on the praise itself, the discussion centered on criticism of Hello! Project fan culture — the notion that “Hello! Project fans usually trash other groups, but jump on the bandwagon the second someone gets praised.” This is a pattern that shows up often on Hello! Project threads, rooted in the fact that the franchise spans many groups with a fragmented fanbase, and this thread was essentially a repeat of that same dynamic. Worth noting for readers: the claim that “no other group has monsters like these” comes from just a handful of comments and isn’t backed by any objective measure. Counterarguments appeared within the thread itself too, like “Angerme or Morning Musume are better” — cross-group skill comparisons are, fundamentally, a matter of fan opinion.

  • “Arioshi’s Summer Vacation 2026” Moves to November for the First Time — 5ch Reacts: “Summer Vacation… in November?”

Fuji TV has announced that its beloved variety special “Arioshi’s Summer Vacation 2026: 77 Hours Embedded in Hawaii” will air on November 14. Now entering its 14th year since the series began in 2013, this marks the first time the show has ever aired in November. Along with Hiroyuki Arioshi, the lineup includes Ungirls’ Tanaka, Sayaka’s Niiyama, Bibiru Ohki, Heisei Nobushikobushi’s Yoshimura, and Kayo Noro, with Elf’s Arakawa joining as a first-time new cast member. On 5ch, the thread filled up with comments questioning the odd timing (“summer vacation in November?”), debating why the show keeps going, and discussing the cast changes.

    September 6, 2026

The annual variety special “Arioshi’s Summer Vacation 2026: 77 Hours Embedded in Hawaii” (Fuji TV) will air Saturday, November 14, starring Hiroyuki Arioshi alongside Ungirls’ Tanaka, Sayaka’s Niiyama, Bibiru Ohki, Heisei Nobushikobushi’s Yoshimura, and Kayo Noro — with Elf’s Arakawa appearing for the first time as a new cast member.

Now in its 14th year since debuting in 2013, the show is airing in November for the first time ever. Expect a steady stream of gourmet highlights and buzzworthy spots, from top-tier steak and incredible pizza to the Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. With a “baby boom” underway among the cast — including Arioshi, Tanaka, and Yoshimura — the special also throws a big celebration for their new arrivals. It’s a full-on celebratory mood, featuring rare glimpses of the guys as dads, parenting talk, and even some party-trick performances.

    Background and Talking Points

“Arioshi’s Summer Vacation” is well known as a special with strong tie-in ties to Hawaii tourism promotion, now entering its 14th year since it began in 2013. On the thread, comments mocking the show’s very existence as a “tourism commercial” mixed with more favorable reactions to the celebratory tone around the cast’s recent string of new babies. No clear reason for the unusual November air date is given in the article itself, but some commenters pointed out that last year’s broadcast had to cut back on-location filming due to a tsunami warning, suggesting the irregular production schedule may be a factor. Beyond just a feel-good celebratory special, the thread also reflects real viewer interest in Fuji TV’s financial situation and how it structures its programming lineup.

  • Yen Surges to 154 Range for First Time in Six Months as Bets on Intervention Grow

In foreign exchange trading on the 7th, the yen strengthened further against the dollar, briefly climbing back into the 154 range — its strongest level in six months, since late February. The move sharply reverses last week’s slide, when the yen had been sold down to the 155.30 range. Behind the shift are expectations of a Bank of Japan rate hike, along with speculation that Japanese and U.S. authorities are working to curb the yen’s rapid depreciation. On 5ch, threads buzzed with a wide range of reactions: posters parsing the Ministry of Finance’s data showing a near-record drop in foreign reserves for clues about actual intervention, speculation over the timing of the BOJ’s next rate hike, and jabs at pundits who had long been predicting “200 yen to the dollar.”

    Re: #139
    Exactly
If Takaichi Sanae and Katayama Satsuki both retire from politics, that alone is worth 15 yen of yen strength

    Background and Key Points

This latest bout of yen strength appears to reflect a combination of expectations for a Bank of Japan rate hike and speculation about currency intervention by the Ministry of Finance and the BOJ. Foreign reserves at the end of August, announced by the Ministry of Finance on the 7th, fell $79.58 billion from the previous month to $1.2075 trillion — the largest drop in comparable statistics. Because a sharp decline in foreign reserves typically results from selling assets such as U.S. Treasuries to fund yen-buying intervention, the market took this as evidence supporting intervention speculation. That said, as posters in the thread pointed out, the actual movement in the yen has amounted to only a few yen despite the scale of this drawdown, so it’s easy to misread the drop in reserves as directly proportional to currency moves — it isn’t. Opinions in the thread were also divided over the timing of the BOJ’s next rate hike and how to assess the administration’s economic policy, with no single view standing as the consensus.

  • Togashi Yoshihiro’s Hunter x Hunter Wraps Its 10-Week Run Right on Schedule — Next Chapter’s Release Date Unknown

Togashi Yoshihiro’s Hunter x Hunter went on hiatus in the September 7 issue of Jump (2026 issue 41), wrapping up its ten-week run of consecutive chapters exactly as most fans predicted. No date has been given for when it’ll return. This installment once again followed Kurapika, the Phantom Troupe, and Gon and Killua, but concerns that this could turn into another extended hiatus remain strong. On the thread, criticism that “only this author gets away with taking breaks like this” collided with defenses like “at least he’s still drawing” and “still faster than Vagabond,” and the discussion spiraled out into the industry’s whole hiatus culture.

    2026.09.07

The consecutive serialization of Togashi Yoshihiro’s manga Hunter x Hunter came to an end with the September 7 (Monday) issue of Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 41 (Shueisha).

As most fans had predicted beforehand, it wrapped up after a ten-week consecutive run.

A mangaka friend of mine laughed bitterly and said 'everyone's taken a page from Togashi's book.' Taking long breaks once you're a hit was unthinkable back in Akira Toriyama's day, but Togashi paved the way (as awful as that is).

This is exactly why hearing 'it's back in serialization' doesn't make me want to read it. There are already way too many characters to keep track of, and then after writing a bit it goes right back into a long hiatus. I don't have it in me to relearn everyone again, so I've lost the will to read it too.

    Re: #32
Just wait till it's finished and read it all in one go.

They really need to make being a mangaka a licensed profession — if you act this selfishly, revoke the license and stop you from drawing manga.

    Re: #42
They should make being a reader a licensed profession too — revoke the license of anyone the publishers or mangaka don't want reading their work, so their brains can never comprehend manga or anything derived from it, ever again.
    43AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:50
This isn't finishing before the readers die, is it.
    59AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:54
    Re: #43
I bet an AI Togashi finishes it before the real Togashi does. Honestly I think that's the joke Togashi himself is making in the manga — getting 'Laplace'd' (a nod to the manga's own predictive 'Laplace's Demon' ability).
    50AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:53
And it's not just this time — the fact that he sets up a cliffhanger right before every hiatus shows it's deliberate, like he's planning to stop at 10 weeks from the very start. Shueisha seriously needs to rein him in and get him in line for once. Just cancel it — someone with this little motivation deserves it. He literally drew the 'rotten mikan theory' in his own story.

    Re: #50
Who in the world is dumb enough to cancel a series that sells millions of tankobon copies the second it drops, lol?
    57AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:54
Hisoka's such a wild character. I'd buy literally anything from him at this point — I wouldn't even be surprised if next chapter he busted out some one-off gag he'd apparently been workshopping for years, right in front of everyone. He's a character you'd think you could predict, but you just can't.

    Re: #57
He's blatantly a ripoff of Killvern from Dai no Daibouken (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai), no matter how you look at it.
    88AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:00
Kishimoto, who finished Naruto without any major hiatuses, and Araki, who's diligently bringing JoJo to a proper close — those guys are great. Togashi and Inoue are just irresponsible. Finish Vagabond already 💩

    Re: #88
Well, Inoue's got Real going too, though.
    119AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:07
His need for validation doesn't match his output.

    Re: #119
I think a big part of why he shares his progress like that is to back himself into a corner — like, 'well, I already announced it, so now I have to actually do it.'
    129AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:09
He's clearly got no intention of writing anything after they reach the Dark Continent at this point.

    Re: #129
I feel like once things wrap up with Kurapika and the Troupe, it'll hit a natural stopping point and he might just end it there. Though he could've ended it back at Greed Island once Gon achieved his goal, and kept going anyway — so I have a feeling he'll keep going even past this too.

    Re: #129
What the old men saw pretty much covers everything, doesn't it. Even the Calamity thing is just flavor text — he's not planning to actually solve that mystery.
    136AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:10
'I'll work about one volume's worth a year' — honestly that'd still be an improvement. Just move to a monthly magazine already.

    Re: #136
It's turned out this way because the editors won't let go of him and won't let it end.
    147AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:13
This manga effectively already ended with the father-son reunion. What's running now is just a bonus epilogue.

    Re: #147
A lot of people don't get this. It's a classic Jump pattern — the author would be fine ending it, but the editors won't let it go.
    156AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:15
You'd have to be out of your mind to keep up with both One Piece and Hunter x Hunter. I hit my limit at Ace's death and the Hunter Exam.

    Re: #156
Say what you want, but it's still a masterpiece even after the Hunter Exam — Yorknew, Greed Island, the Chimera Ant arc. Personally I liked the Election arc too. The stuff with Killua's family is great as well — there's not a single bad arc in it.

    Re: #156
As for One Piece, I never understood the 'Pegabank' arc (likely a garbled or slang reference to a specific arc name).
    159AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:16
Togashi's still fine since his hiatuses actually make news. The truly scary ones are the series on permanent hiatus that don't even get talked about anymore.
Saki — on hiatus more than half of every year, 20 years in with no end in sight.
Kenka Shoubai — serialization's been stopped for 6 years now.
And then there's the legend-tier Vagabond and Bastard!!, both well past 10 years since their last chapter.

    Re: #159
Historie comes up now and then too. I hear it's good, but I heard the author basically told people outright to give up on it ever being finished, so I haven't picked it up.

    Re: #159
Vagabond gets singled out a lot in these conversations, but it actually quietly got 'finished' through an Inoue-held Vagabond exhibition and an accompanying booklet — though it's not an ending anyone could really accept.

Background and key points of debate

Togashi Yoshihiro is an author known for repeatedly going on hiatus, anywhere from a few weeks to several years at a stretch, and this pattern of “ten weeks of chapters, then another hiatus” has essentially become the norm at this point. Commenters on the thread floated the idea that his workflow follows a cycle tied to finishing one tankobon volume at a time — serializing chapters until a volume’s worth is complete, then focusing on the volume release and writing the next batch before publishing again. The debate centered on whether to view this hiatus-heavy style as “irresponsible” or as “still better than nothing, at least he’s drawing.” For comparison, posters brought up Inoue Takehiko’s Vagabond (on hiatus for over 10 years), as well as Kishimoto Masashi’s Naruto and Araki Hirohiko’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, both of which reached clear, definitive endings. One post claiming “the author wants to wrap it up but the editors won’t let him” also circulated, but that’s reader speculation rather than confirmed fact, so it shouldn’t be taken at face value.
