  • “An Announcement on an Unbelievable Level”: Sony’s Mystery Leak Meets Nothing But Skepticism on 5ch

On September 7, a gaming-focused X (formerly Twitter) account leaked word that “Sony is apparently making an announcement on an unbelievable scale around 10am Pacific Time,” sparking discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The timing overlapped with the same-day announcement of a new Nintendo Direct, fueling speculation. Thread posters floated guesses ranging from a Zelda movie tie-in to new software lineups for the Switch 2, but with the replies under the original leak post flooded with negative reactions toward Sony, skepticism and low expectations dominated the discussion.

I’m hearing an unbelievable-level leak that Sony might announce something big tomorrow. Keep an eye out around 10am Pacific Time.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This “announcement on an unbelievable scale” isn’t an official statement — it started as secondhand hearsay from an overseas personal account, with no comment from Sony itself. In the gaming industry, unverifiable leaks like this routinely swirl the day before a major showcase, and there’s a long history of “huge announcement” hype fizzling into a letdown, which is exactly the track record behind 5ch’s skepticism here. Posters also pointed to “State of Play,” Sony’s own showcase event mentioned in the thread, arguing it’s unlikely Sony would sit on news from its own event only to drop it to coincide with Nintendo’s showcase day instead — a key basis for the doubt. Note that the Nintendo Direct scheduled for the same day is a separate matter from Sony’s announcement and shouldn’t be confused with it.

  • Shō Nakata Opens Self-Funded Baseball Facility “Aim for the Top” in Nagoya

Former professional baseball player Shō Nakata (37) has opened a baseball facility called “Aim for the Top,” which he personally produced, in Nagoya’s Minato Ward. Nakata, who played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, the Yomiuri Giants, and the Chunichi Dragons, reportedly paid “several hundred million yen” out of his own pocket for the facility, where he runs baseball clinics for elementary and middle school students and personally coaches when he has time. “I’d love to see Koshien players and pro baseball players come out of this place,” he said, describing his goal for this new chapter of his life. The thread lit up with questions about where the money came from, surprise at the tuition-based business model, and debate over Japan’s shrinking youth baseball population.

Aichi's baseball kids are already dominating Koshien. The Chunichi Dragons have won the most titles of any team in the 12-club junior tournament. This year's Koshien champions, Chiben Wakayama, had Yamada — a former Chunichi Jr. player — as captain and cleanup hitter. Kendai Takasaki's sophomore leadoff hitter is also from Aichi, Yokohama's captain is a Chunichi Jr. alum too, and Sendai Ikuei's entire 1-2-3 batting order is from Aichi. It's an era where top schools nationwide are poaching Aichi's kids.

    103AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:22
    Re: #86
The guy behind this whole thing probably did round up sponsors, and Nakata's the result.

    Background and Talking Points

Shō Nakata is a former professional baseball player who played for the Nippon-Ham Fighters, the Yomiuri Giants, and the Chunichi Dragons before retiring. The facility runs on monthly tuition, and according to the Chunichi Shimbun article that broke the story, about 160 elementary and middle schoolers currently attend, though it’s “not a business that generates large profits.” Opinions in the thread split over how to read the phrase “several hundred million yen out of his own pocket” — some mistook it for unpaid charity work, while others pointed out it’s actually a normal tuition-charging business, speculating about loans or backers. There was also pushback on the premise that baseball’s youth population is declining, with some noting that the serious “gachi” (hardcore/committed) kids at school-style programs like this one haven’t dropped off at all. Separately, Aichi Prefecture has recently become known for producing captains and star players at Koshien powerhouse schools who came up through the Chunichi Dragons Junior program, and posters in the thread cited several real examples.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Sports News+) thread “[Baseball] Shō Nakata: “I’d love to see Koshien players and pro players come out of this” — Baseball facility “Aim for the Top” opens in Nagoya, “several hundred million yen” out of his own pocket.”

  • Is the Zoo Just a ‘Prison for Animals’? 5ch Debates: ‘Isn’t Modern Society a Prison for Humans, Too?’

A debate has broken out on 5ch over whether zoos are actually happy places for animals. One trigger was an Asahi Shimbun report that three lions died in August at the Tama Zoological Park in Hino, Tokyo, apparently due to heat-related health problems. In the thread, opinions clashed between those who called zoos “a prison for animals — and a life sentence at that” and those who argued that the wild is far harsher, and that zoos are actually safer since animals don’t have to worry about predators or starvation. Some pointed out that keeping pets is essentially the same kind of “confinement,” broadening the discussion into how humans relate to animals in general, and the thread ran to 41 replies.

    1AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:55
It's literally a prison for animals — and a life sentence too.
Captured somewhere, forcibly torn away from their parents, siblings, and friends, dragged here, and put on display in a cramped cage until they die.
If you're taking your kids to see one, at least teach them how selfish humans are being.
    3AnonymousSep 7, 2026 19:56
    Zoos are the best, honestly.
You get fed without any effort at all.

And if you do nothing, you starve. That's what the wild really is.
    10AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:00
Keeping a pet is basically the same thing, isn't it?
    Confinement, abuse even.
    12AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:02
    I get the argument, honestly.
Some animals do look bored stuck in small enclosures, and the stress of being stared at by people all day seems rough.
Though maybe simpler creatures don't feel that as strongly?

Heat to blame? Three lions die, others fall ill at Tama Zoological Park, Tokyo

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on the 3rd that three lions kept at the Tama Zoological Park (Hino, Tokyo) died in succession.

That's just the law of nature — getting weeded out and selected.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The worldwide argument over whether captive animals are truly happy has never been scientifically settled. Since there’s no way for humans to directly verify an animal’s subjective experience, both sides of the debate ultimately rest on speculation. Zoos aren’t purely about putting animals on display — their stated missions also include breeding and protecting endangered species (species conservation) and education. And as the thread noted, the wild really is harsh: nearly half of lion cubs die before age two in the wild. At the same time, the deaths of the three lions at Tama Zoological Park, reportedly tied to inadequate heat management in their enclosure, showed that zoos don’t always succeed in protecting the animals in their care either. The thread never reached a consensus, remaining split between the view that captivity is inherently unhappy and the view that a safe environment is what’s actually best for the animals.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “People who say they still like zoos as adults clearly lack real kindness or imagination — finding it too sad to watch is the normal adult reaction.”

Compared to the stats of past Triple Crown winners like Sadaharu Oh, Hiromitsu Ochiai, and Nobuhiko Matsunaka, harsh voices have called it a “low-level Triple Crown,” while defenders counter that “Ochiai’s numbers were about the same when he won his first Triple Crown” and “by wRC+ he’s still an absolute monster,” splitting opinion. The thread also touched on the “Japanese record” labeling of his home run total and the presence of teammate Morishita, who sits in second place.

    Re: #115
Strictly speaking, it's a "Japanese-registered player record" — meaning a record among players not registered as foreign players.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Triple Crown is a record for leading the league in batting average, home runs, and RBIs in the same season — in NPB history, only a handful of players, including Sadaharu Oh, Hiromitsu Ochiai, and Nobuhiko Matsunaka, have ever achieved it. What split the thread was whether to judge by “absolute numbers” or by “relative dominance within the league.” When Ochiai won his first Triple Crown in 1982 with a .325 average, 32 home runs, and 99 RBIs, he too was criticized at the time as “low-level,” but he went on to post overwhelming numbers for the next two seasons, cementing his reputation — a reminder that a player’s historical standing isn’t decided by his first year’s stats alone. As for the “Japanese record” label on Oh’s home run total, Oh held Taiwanese citizenship but graduated from a Japanese school, which under NPB’s record-keeping rules classifies him as a “Japanese player” — a distinction between nationality and record category that’s easy to misunderstand. It isn’t clear from the thread’s comments alone, but knowing this institutional background makes the premise of the debate easier to follow.

After idol Suzuki Airi (formerly of ℃-ute and Buono!)’s official manager posted a form on her official X account calling for “Suzuki Airi’s famous quotes,” fans on 5ch’s Hello! Project board piled on with a flood of replies. Rather than genuine quotes, the thread filled up mostly with parody-style “legendary lines” written in her voice, alongside nostalgic callbacks to her Buono! and ℃-ute days — though some posts also brought up unconfirmed rumors, like the smoking allegations swirling around Sakamichi groups, prompting another user to step in and correct them: “That’s a fabrication that came out of the Wolf board.” Talk of a day-by-day calendar marking her 25th anniversary in the industry added to the buzz as well.

    Background and Discussion Points

Suzuki Airi is a veteran idol singer with 25 years in the industry, having come up through ℃-ute and Buono!, and as the thread notes, a 365-day tear-off calendar has been announced as a commemorative item. The quote-collecting campaign itself is official fan service run by her manager, but on the 5ch side, the dominant mood leaned less toward actual recorded quotes and more toward playful phrases mimicking her speaking style, plus references to old songs posted as “famous quotes.” Where opinions split was over posts that resurfaced old, unsourced rumors — like the smoking allegations surrounding Sakamichi groups — as though they were established fact; another user pushed back, pointing out it was “a fabrication that originated on 5ch’s ‘Wolf’ board,” and the claim got corrected. It’s worth noting for readers that unverified information that’s circulated online for years tends to resurface and spread again in piling-on threads like this one.

  • Hong Kong Ranks World’s 2nd ‘Billionaire City,’ Japan Doesn’t Even Crack the Top 15 — 5ch: ‘Our Land Prices Used to Buy All of America’

Altrata’s 2026 report, released September 1, ranks Hong Kong as the world’s second-largest city for “billionaires” — people with net worth of $1 billion or more — with 106 residents, trailing only New York. No Japanese city made the top 15. On 5ch, discussion centered on the fact that 64% of Hong Kong’s billionaires come from outside the city, the effects of the weak yen and real estate market conditions, and the reality of inequality within Japan. While some argued that “having fewer billionaires makes for a healthier society,” others countered that “Japan’s poverty rate is the second-highest in the G7 after the US,” splitting opinion on how to weigh a smaller wealth gap.

According to the “Billionaire Census 2026,” released September 1 by global wealth research firm Altrata, Hong Kong ranked among the cities with the most billionaires and ultra-wealthy individuals, trailing only New York. Here, a “billionaire” refers to an individual with assets of $1 billion or more. As of the end of 2025, the world’s billionaire population reached an all-time high of 3,795, up 8.2% year-on-year — the strongest growth in the past five years. Total wealth also swelled 12.8% to $15.1 trillion, underscoring billionaires’ growing influence on the global economy. (Hong Kong Economic Journal)

By city, New York held firmly onto first place with 164 billionaires. Hong Kong came in second worldwide with 106, maintaining its position as a global hub for the ultra-wealthy — though, like London, its count slipped slightly from the previous year amid a real estate market correction and a slowdown in the mainland Chinese economy. Even so, Hong Kong remains Asia’s center for finance and wealth management, continuing to draw wealthy individuals from around the world.

One notable feature of Hong Kong is that roughly 64% of its billionaires come from outside the city. Many have moved their assets from mainland China and elsewhere, giving Hong Kong — like Singapore — a strong character as an “international haven for the wealthy.” This reflects Hong Kong’s renewed standing as a hub for family offices and wealth management.

This is written like it's a bad thing, but doesn't it just mean wealth redistribution works better in Japan than in the US or China? In the end, this is just a garbage article trying to talk Japan down.

    Of course there's inequality
    Without it there's no growth
If the outcome is the same whether you work hard or not, would you even bother trying?

Japan's inequality is the unfair kind — the gap between regular and non-regular employees — which involves no real competition
That's exactly why Japan can't grow

That's exactly where the perception is off
Europe and the US are just doing business — they're not blowing up deals over emotional arguments the way Japan does

Background and Key Points of Debate

The survey is based on Altrata’s count of “billionaires” — individuals with a net worth of $1 billion or more. Notably, Hong Kong has retained its status as an international wealth-management hub even after the enactment of the National Security Law. The fact that over 60% of its billionaires come from outside Hong Kong points to a continued inflow of assets from mainland China and elsewhere. On the thread, the view that “a society with fewer billionaires is a healthier one” clashed with the counterargument that “Japan’s relative poverty rate is the second-highest in the G7 after the US,” though the thread never really dug into the fact that the number of billionaires and a country’s domestic poverty rate aren’t necessarily linked indicators. Some also pointed to the effects of the weak yen and the real estate market, suggesting that “wealth” as measured by a city ranking and inequality as experienced in everyday life are really separate axes worth considering on their own terms.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Hong Kong Ranks World’s No. 2 ‘Billionaire City’ — Japan Barely Registers, Misses Top 15“.

  • The Prefecture Where People Most Want to Retire — Okinawa Takes #2, But What’s #1?

In response to news that Okinawa Prefecture placed second, with 7.1% of the vote, in a ranking of “prefectures where people want to spend their retirement,” 5channelers debated the ideal place to retire. Some praised Okinawa as “a comfortable escape from the heat,” while others fired back with tougher takes like “you can’t live there without a car, and gas is expensive” and “a lot of people move there and leave again within a few years.” Opinions on Tokyo were split between those who valued its convenience — “you can get everything done on foot or by bike” — and those worried that “paying rent forever in retirement just isn’t sustainable.” Compact regional cities like Sendai and Matsumoto also drew a fair number of votes of support.

    (details omitted)

    ●No. 2: Okinawa Prefecture

Coming in second with 7.1% of the vote was Okinawa Prefecture. Located at Japan’s westernmost point, it had a population of roughly 1.46 million as of August 2026.

    Background and Talking Points

Okinawa Prefecture is popular as a tourist destination, but it’s also frequently noted that a certain number of people who move there end up heading back to the mainland within just a few years — the “low retention rate” comments in this thread are an extension of that same recurring topic. The high cost of living that comes with car-dependent life, along with rising prices unique to remote islands (like Miyako Island), are similarly common points of discussion. Meanwhile, debate over retirement in Tokyo tends to produce two opposing views at once — the convenience of “getting everything done on foot or by bike” versus the burden of “paying rent throughout retirement” — and that same split shows up directly in this thread. One point readers may misread is the thread’s claim that “Okinawa is a summer retreat”: this is only true relative to years when mainland Japan sees an unusually high number of scorching-hot days — it doesn’t mean Okinawa’s climate itself is actually cool. The article doesn’t mention which prefecture took the top spot in the original ranking, so readers curious about that should check the source article.

  • “Sgt. Frog” New Series Recasts All 5 Main Voice Actors, Keroro Now Played by Makoto Koichi — 5ch: ‘Surprised How Natural It Sounds’

It has emerged that the anime “Sgt. Frog” (Keroro Gunso) is replacing all five of its main cast members for its new series, including Kumiko Watanabe, who has voiced Keroro for years. Taking over the roles are Makoto Koichi as Keroro, Rika Nagae as Tamama, Toshiki Masuda as Giroro, Kousuke Echigoya as Kururu, and Keishi Inomata as Dororo. On the 5ch Geino/Sports News+ board, some posters praised the new cast’s performances as “surprisingly natural,” while others, noting the lukewarm reception of the theatrical film released just before the switch, lamented that “it’s a shame the old cast’s final work ended on that note” — opinions were split.

The longtime main cast consisted of Kumiko Watanabe as Sgt. Keroro, Etsuko Kozakura as Private Tamama, Joji Nakata as Corporal Giroro, Takehito Koyasu as Sergeant Major Kururu, Tsuyoshi Kusao as Corporal Dororo, Noriko Kuwashima as Fuyuki Hinata, and Chiwa Saito as Natsumi Hinata.

The new cast has Makoto Koichi as Sgt. Keroro, Rika Nagae as Private Tamama, Toshiki Masuda as Corporal Giroro, Kousuke Echigoya as Sergeant Major Kururu, and Keishi Inomata as Corporal Dororo.

    Background and Key Points

“Sgt. Frog” (Keroro Gunso) is a long-running series that began airing in 2004, with Kumiko Watanabe and four other main cast members voicing their roles for over 20 years. This full cast overhaul comes with the launch of a new series, and recasting itself isn’t unusual — but because it coincided with a period when the theatrical film released just beforehand was reportedly underperforming at the box office, the view that “the old cast couldn’t go out on a high note” stood out in the thread. At the same time, many posters praised the new cast’s performances as sounding “completely natural,” and the gap between how unfamiliar the names looked on paper versus how the cast actually sounded became a talking point. It should be noted that comments about the film’s box office performance and internal production circumstances remain unsourced hearsay and speculation rather than confirmed fact. The fact that this airs as a morning children’s program rather than a late-night anime also appears to be one reason the casting is being judged along two different lines — by adult longtime fans versus the show’s actual target audience of children.

    Background and Talking Points

“Sandwichman’s World Shock Video Company,” the show at the center of this story, is built around releasing SNS-exclusive clips alongside its regular broadcast, and as happened here, cuts that never made it to air sometimes surface on X instead. Ebata Hisaki is a new Juice=Juice member who has drawn attention for her expressive faces and lively movement on variety shows. While many thread comments praised her casting this time, others voiced frustration that the same members keep getting picked. This is a recurring debate for Hello! Project and other large idol groups whenever TV appearances seem unevenly distributed among members — though the posts alone don’t reveal the agency’s intentions or the show’s editorial reasoning.

At this point, all that’s confirmed by reporting is that police responded after a report from a convenience store employee, and a 22-year-old woman with Brazilian nationality was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The motive, the relationship between the two women, and what the shuttle bus driver knew at the time all remain unclear. Some posts on the thread claimed that “if she’s not indicted, she can’t be deported,” but that actually depends on residency status and individual immigration procedures, so drawing that conclusion at this arrest stage is premature. Speculation about the nationality and relationship of the victim and suspect also circulated, but none of it is backed up by reporting. It’s worth keeping in mind that much of the discussion functioned less as commentary on the incident itself and more as an outlet for grievances about the acceptance of foreign workers.
