  • Nintendo’s ‘¥300 Billion for Partnership Building’ Sparks Debate on 5ch Over What It Actually Means

During its November 2021 earnings briefing, Nintendo outlined an investment plan that included a line item for “up to ¥300 billion for partnership building,” and the interpretation of that phrase became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. The thread kicked off with the theory that it meant “buyout guarantee fees for third-party software,” but posters quickly pointed out that the source was actually a 2021 article focused mainly on the Nintendo Account. The real point of contention was the definition of Nintendo’s “customers” — end users or business partners — and the debate never reached a consensus.

Guaranteeing ¥300 billion worth of purchases for third-party games? That's way too much.
    2AnonymousSep 7, 2026 23:10
First-party software development budget: ¥100 billion
R&D expenses (hardware development): ¥143.782 billion (including security equipment investment)
    Advertising expenses: ¥104.3 billion

The buyout guarantee is bigger than what they spend developing their own games

I wonder if the Switch 2 versions of Cyberpunk and Elden Ring are being funded out of this too?

You could build three skyscrapers in Tokyo with that kind of money.

If it's the "Bravia method" (a nod to Sony's habit of pouring huge money into a product line), even this might be overspending.

    Re: #103
Nah, that's money earmarked for supply chain stuff.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “partnership building costs” comes from an investment plan Nintendo announced on November 5, 2021, which allocated up to ¥100 billion to expanding its game development structure and up to ¥50 billion to non-gaming fields such as visual media — alongside up to ¥300 billion for building infrastructure for online services and physical-retail partnerships centered on the Nintendo Account. The thread started from the theory that this meant “buyout guarantee fees for third-party software,” but other posters pushed back, noting that the source was a 2021 article and that Nintendo’s own IR materials (November 2024 edition, page 51) list investment examples showing the spending is closer to store and in-store equipment investment. The sticking point was the definition of “customer”: whether it meant end users (Nintendo Account holders) or business partners like third-party publishers, and interpretations stayed split to the end. Since Nintendo hasn’t disclosed a breakdown, nothing rules out some of it going toward timed exclusives or sales guarantees either — so this isn’t a matter that can be settled definitively.

  • Leeds’ Ao Tanaka Wins Man of the Match With 63% of the Fan Vote, Driving the Team on Both Ends of the Pitch

Leeds United announced on September 6 that midfielder Ao Tanaka has been named “Hisense Player of the Match” for the previous day’s Premier League Matchday 3 fixture against Brighton. Tanaka captured 63% of the fan vote, well clear of runner-up Tarik Muharemović (9%), goalkeeper James Trafford (8%), and goalscorer Jaden Bogle (7%). Reaction threads on 5channel were mostly full of praise, but some posters pointed out that local reporters’ match ratings had Tanaka tied for the lowest score on the pitch, splitting opinion and reigniting debate over the offside call that wiped out one of his goals.

The real culprit for the Brazil loss is manager Moriyasu and his bizarre tactics, above everything else
Then there's Sugawara losing his mark, Machino standing around doing nothing, Sano losing almost every duel while being involved in all four conceded goals, and Junnosuke Suzuki not dropping to receive the ball
On top of that, they should've attacked more while the starters were still on but couldn't find a goal
Japan has only ever beaten Brazil in matches where they scored three goals, so winning with just one was never realistic to begin with. Don't underestimate Brazil

Not even a sliver of a case for onside
Even the players' reaction was basically 'yeah, fair enough, offside'

    Background and Points of Debate

The “Hisense Player of the Match” is a fan-voted award the club hands out after each game, which is a separate thing from the ratings assigned by local reporters and data sites using their own criteria (official match ratings, beat-reporter ratings). It’s not unusual for the two to diverge, and this time the split between Tanaka’s overwhelming 63% fan-vote win and a tied-for-worst score from local beat reporters is exactly what fueled the disagreement in the thread. Fan votes tend to be swayed by popularity and overall impression of a player’s game, while ratings tend to weigh the precision of individual plays more heavily, so calling the result either “underrated” or “overrated” based on just one metric alone would be premature. As for the offside call, current rules can in some cases treat the position of the hands or arms as part of the offside criteria, which can clash with the more traditional, intuitive idea that only foot position matters. That gap in how well understood the rule is seems to be part of why the disallowed goal sparked so much debate.

  • Fitness Club Bankruptcies Hit Record High of 26 in Jan–Aug, Tokyo Shoko Research Finds

According to a report from Tokyo Shoko Research, fitness club bankruptcies in Japan totaled 26 between January and August 2026, a 2.6-fold increase year-on-year and a new record high. Small operators with capital under 10 million yen accounted for 90% of the cases, and “weak sales” was the leading cause. On 5channel, the news sparked a debate between those arguing “you can strength-train at home for free” and those countering that “gyms offer things you can’t get elsewhere — showers, equipment, facilities” — with the discussion expanding into the fact that only a small minority of people manage to stick with a gym membership for a full year.

Tokyo Shoko Research announced on the 7th that fitness club bankruptcies totaled 26 cases between January and August, a 2.6-fold increase from the same period last year and a new record high. Rising costs — rent, utility bills, and wages for specialized trainers — were cited as contributing factors.

By capital size, businesses with less than 10 million yen in capital accounted for 24 of the cases, or 90%. By employee count, businesses with fewer than 5 employees accounted for 23 cases, and those with 5 to 9 employees accounted for 2 — a clear concentration among small and micro operators.

By cause, “weak sales” was the most common at 19 cases, followed by “fallout from past financial strain” at 3 cases.

It's often said only 4% of people stick with a gym for a full year. Training natural (without supplements), you can't even gain a kilo of muscle in a year, so of course it gets boring and people quit, lol.
    65AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:45
    Re: #58
Only 4% manage to keep it up, huh. So anyone who sticks with it is already impressive just for that.
    63AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:44
Even public bathhouses carry a risk of catching athlete's foot, so sharing equipment with strangers at a gym is an absolute no for me. I keep everything self-contained at home.

What I'd really like to know is the trick to sticking with it long-term. There are people out there for whom it's just become second nature, like a hobby they do without even thinking about it.
    86AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:53
My impression is that it's the old-school gyms charging 7,000+ yen a month that are going under — not cheap, but with mediocre equipment and staff who just stand around chatting. On top of that, they're closed one day a week and shut early at night. Meanwhile 24-hour gyms and personal training studios are popping up everywhere, and these old places just don't adapt or change a thing.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

According to Tokyo Shoko Research, of the 26 bankruptcies, 24 involved businesses with less than 10 million yen in capital and 23 had fewer than 5 employees — meaning the vast majority were concentrated among small and micro operators. By cause, “weak sales” stood out at 19 cases, suggesting a structural headwind rather than isolated failures. The thread’s debate split between those saying “you can strength-train without spending money” and those countering that “showers, equipment, and the environment itself for sticking with it have real value” — both sides make reasonably persuasive points, and neither clearly wins out. Note that the oft-cited “only 4% stick with it for a year” figure is conventional wisdom repeated in the thread, but its source isn’t clear, so it should be taken with a grain of salt. The surge in bankruptcies is also consistent with a picture in which, on top of rising costs, price-disrupting business models like cheap 24-hour gyms are driving out existing operators — though this remains speculation not explicitly stated in the article itself.

  • Many One Piece “antis” turn out to be ex-believers — 5ch: “Love turned to hate, so of course it runs deep”

A thread titled “One Piece antis feel somehow different from antis of other manga” popped up on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyou G board. Most of the replies agreed that many One Piece antis are “flipped antis” — former devoted believers — which is why their grudge runs so much deeper. Complaints centered on the split in opinion starting around the Thriller Bark and Water Seven arcs, plus frustration over the retcon revealing that the “Gum-Gum Fruit” was actually the “Nika Fruit” all along. Opinions were divided, though, on how this compares to antis of Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, or My Hero Academia, with some arguing the simple “betrayed believer” theory doesn’t fully explain it.

Sounds like Oda's genuinely being treated like one of the Celestial Dragons at this point (note: One Piece's untouchable ruling elite)

Background and key points of this discussion

One Piece began serialization in 1997 and is still ongoing today. In the 2022 Wano arc, it was revealed that protagonist Luffy’s power, the “Gum-Gum Fruit,” was actually the legendary Devil Fruit “Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Model: ‘Nika,’” tied to a sun god. For readers who had known it as the “Gum-Gum Fruit” for years, this read as a retcon, and it’s often cited as the moment people dropped the series. Demon Slayer, brought up for comparison in the thread, began serialization in 2016 and wrapped up in 23 volumes, with its short run cited approvingly as a sign of being “well done.” Opinion in the thread was split on whether One Piece antis can really be explained simply as “flipped former believers,” or whether it’s more about frustration with the accumulated retcons and stagnation of a 29-year-long serialization — no clear consensus was reached. It’s also worth noting that even where opinions on the work diverge, the criticism here targets the content of the work itself, not personal attacks on any real individual.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Headlines like “on the verge of going viral” often originate from press releases put out by an artist’s agency or label, and don’t necessarily reflect the actual spread of a clip on platforms like TikTok or X. As posters in the thread pointed out, this song did win first place at the Hello! Project Song Awards, so there’s a real gap in temperature between its standing among core fans and how far it has actually penetrated the general public via TikTok. Comparisons to Juice=Juice’s similarly quiet early rise came up because the question of “how does a later-debuting group build recognition” is a recurring topic within Hello! Project fandom. At the same time, the thread also hints at rivalry between groups over spots on the Kohaku Uta Gassen lineup, and at differing temperatures between units at different stages of development. Posts amounting to personal insults or slander against real members have been excluded from this article.

  • Countless Nobunaga Games, Zero Genpei War Games: 5ch Asks “Is It Fun When You Know It Ends at Dan-no-ura?”

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō G” board, a thread blew up discussing why there are countless games set in the Sengoku period but almost none covering the Genpei War (1180s). Posters pointed to reasons like the small scale of the conflict — only a few thousand warriors involved — the fact that the era’s equipment, such as ōyoroi armor and naginata, wasn’t suited to group combat, and the fact that everyone already knows the war ends at the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The discussion expanded to cover the gap in treatment between the Three Kingdoms era and the Chu-Han Contention (Xiang Yu vs. Liu Bang), as well as the scarcity of games set in Korean peninsula history, evolving into a broader debate about which parts of history lend themselves to becoming games.

The Genpei War probably didn't even have 10,000 troops total if you're unlucky.
It could've been something like 3,000 vs 1,000.
So a single mistake could flip the whole battle.
Great armor (ōyoroi) was also purpose-built defense against arrows.
And naginata are swung sideways rather than thrust, so they weren't suited for group combat.
That's why they seriously fought these dumb-sounding battles where warriors called out their names one by one before dueling.
Spears only started getting used in the Nanboku-chō period, by Kusunoki and Akamatsu.
Even then it was for urban street fighting, to trip up enemy horses.

For starters, it's just unfamiliar to Japanese audiences.
The periods that could work as material — the Korean Three Kingdoms era and the Imjin War — both involve Japan and China heavily, so it's hard to figure out how to shape them into a game.
And the Later Three Kingdoms period, which is self-contained within the peninsula, is kind of… underwhelming.

Strictly speaking, "Heike" and "Genji" don't necessarily refer to Kiyomori's or Yoshitomo's lineage specifically — they're terms for particular branches of the Taira and Minamoto clans.
It's just that those particular branches are so famous that "Heike" and "Genji" usually end up meaning those specific families.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Genpei War was a civil war fought between the Taira and Minamoto clans in the 1180s, ultimately settled at the Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185). While Sengoku-era battles involved tens of thousands of troops, Genpei-era battles are believed to have involved only a few thousand, and equipment of the time, such as ōyoroi armor and naginata, was suited to individual combat, making it hard to depict large-scale group tactics in a game — a point raised repeatedly in the thread. That said, it’s worth noting that the famous episode of the Taira army fleeing in panic at the sound of startled waterfowl is largely a narrative element drawn from the Tale of the Heike, and its historical accuracy is disputed. The discussion also extended to Chinese historical material less well-known than the Three Kingdoms era (the Chu-Han Contention, the Sixteen Kingdoms period) and to Korean peninsula history, highlighting how much the audience’s or player’s existing background knowledge shapes which subjects get chosen for taiga dramas and history games.

  • Owning a Dog Cuts Dementia Risk by 48% — 5ch: ‘Meanwhile, Cats Show No Effect’

A research team from the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the University of Tokyo, and other institutions released the results of a study that tracked 11,224 elderly residents of Tokyo aged 65 to 84 for seven and a half years. According to the study, people who currently own a dog had a 48% lower risk of developing dementia requiring long-term care compared to those who had never owned one, while former dog owners showed almost no clear difference. On 5ch, comments ranged from requests to compare against other pets like cats, to the observation that people with the financial and time resources to keep a dog may already be living healthier lifestyles to begin with, to opinions favoring the exercise benefits of daily walks.

The paper “Investigating the Potential Protective Effect of Dog Ownership on Incident Disabling Dementia and Its Cost-Effectiveness,” published by researchers affiliated with the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the University of Tokyo, and other institutions in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, investigates the effect of dog ownership on dementia risk among the elderly and its cost-effectiveness.

The study tracked 11,224 elderly residents of Tokyo aged 65 to 84 over seven and a half years. Of the participants, 963 (8.6%) were current dog owners, 2,539 (22.6%) were former dog owners, and 7,722 (68.8%) had never owned a dog. During the follow-up period, 1,989 people (17.7%) developed dementia requiring long-term care.

An analysis of dog ownership and dementia risk (using an instrumental variable approach) found that current dog owners had a 48% lower risk of developing dementia requiring care compared to non-owners. However, among former dog owners, there was almost no clear difference in dementia incidence.

    > The research team also looked into the economic impact of dog ownership. According to their estimates, if the share of elderly dog owners in Japan rose to 13.4%, the additional cost to society as a whole over four years — including household spending on things like pet food — would come to roughly 4.63 trillion yen.

Owning a dog inevitably bumps up your step count whether you like it or not.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This study, conducted by a team from the National Institute for Environmental Studies, the University of Tokyo, and other institutions, stands out for using an approach called “instrumental variable analysis” to cut down on confounding factors rather than relying on simple correlation. As pointed out in the thread, this is a topic prone to reverse-causality concerns — that people who can afford to keep a dog are already healthier and better off financially — and the research team appears to have designed the study with that issue in mind. Notably, current owners showed a 48% drop in risk while former owners showed almost no difference, a result that’s hard to explain by “wealthy people can afford dogs” alone, and instead suggests an ongoing habit, such as daily walks, may be driving the effect. The comment about “walking flushing out amyloid beta” is only a general hypothesis floating around online, and it’s worth noting — since it’s easy to misread — that this particular paper does not itself prove any brain mechanism. The study also estimated cost-effectiveness, finding that if the dog-ownership rate rose to 13.4%, the additional cost to society as a whole would reach roughly 4.63 trillion yen over four years — a reminder that the health benefits and the economic burden sit in tension with each other.

Background and Key Points on This Topic

The “hype ranking” mentioned in the thread isn’t an official ranking — it’s an informal metric fans track themselves, based on the growth of a YouTube video’s view count and likes, to gauge how much buzz it’s generating. Hello! Project is home to multiple groups — including BEYOOOOONDS, Juice=Juice, and ANGERME — all under the same agency, effectively competing for the same limited slots in TV appearances and media exposure. Because of this, whenever one group’s video takes off, fans of other groups tend to react, often sparking rival banter within the thread. This time was no exception: shortly after the video went up, exchanges with Juice=Juice fans and off-topic copy-paste trolling derailed the discussion for a stretch, shifting focus away from the footage itself and onto the surrounding back-and-forth. Worth noting: the like counts and hype-ranking prospects mentioned are based purely on fans’ impressions — no concrete tally or official announcement was presented in the thread.

  • Jump’s ‘Big 3’ Are Untouchable, But the No. 5 Spot Is Total Chaos — 5ch: ‘It Drops Off a Cliff After That’

A thread on 5ch about Weekly Shonen Jump’s most popular series of all time got heated. Posters agreed that Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Demon Slayer form a “Big 3” on a level of their own, but opinion split right down the middle over who deserves the No. 5 spot. Candidates like Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fist of the North Star, Captain Tsubasa, and Yu-Gi-Oh! were floated one after another, but with no agreement on whether to judge by sales, worldwide name recognition, or sheer quality, the discussion never really converged.

If that's the standard, it's gotta be Captain Tsubasa.
    66AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:51
    Dragon Ball
    Fist of the North Star
    One Piece
    Yu-Gi-Oh!
    See?

    Re: #66
    Lmao that's hard to read.
    71AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:56
Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Demon Slayer are just on such another level as the Big 3 that arguing over #5 feels kind of pointless.
    75AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:58
    Re: #71
Fist of the North Star, Slam Dunk, Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen—honestly any of them work.
Better to just settle on the Top 3 and leave it there.
    81AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:00
    Re: #71
    This.
Easiest way to put it is a baseball analogy: Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Demon Slayer are basically manga's equivalent of Shigeo Nagashima, Ichiro, and Shohei Ohtani.
    76AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:58
In terms of economic scale, it's definitely Yu-Gi-Oh!, no question.

    Kochikame would be the runner-up.
    86AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:02
    Re: #76
For economic scale, Fist of the North Star is bigger.
    84AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:01
    My ranking, top to bottom:

    Dragon Ball
    One Piece
    Naruto
    Hunter x Hunter
    JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

    Jujutsu Kaisen
    My Hero Academia
    Chainsaw Man
    BLEACH
    Rurouni Kenshin
    Yu Yu Hakusho

Below that: Slam Dunk, Fist of the North Star, Yu-Gi-Oh!, etc.

    What do you think?
    100AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:09
    Re: #84
I love Naruto, but it feels a notch below Dragon Ball and One Piece when you put them side by side.
I love Hunter x Hunter, but with all those hiatuses it's not quite enough to call it a flagship title.
I love JoJo, but it's got too much of that subculture vibe, or maybe just too quirky—something feels off.

Dragon Ball and One Piece are so dominant you have to include them, but as genuinely enjoyable works, honestly I'd rank them 5th or lower.
    87AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:03
One Piece hasn't been any fun for ages now, feel free to exclude it.
    90AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:04
    Re: #87
Even factoring that in, the only manga that beats One Piece is Dragon Ball, honestly.
    91AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:05
Let's throw a gag manga in there too.
    96AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:07

Dr. Slump or Kochikame, which one though?
    97AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:08
    Re: #91
I think Kochikame's about the only one that qualifies.
    94AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:07
There's probably something from the early days, though I couldn't say what.
    101AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:09

    Maybe Barefoot Gen?
    104AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:10
    Re: #94
    Then Mazinger Z works too.
    102AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:09
Dragon Ball and One Piece sell on pure merit, but Demon Slayer just got carried by astroturfing and scalpers, didn't it?
Feels wrong to include that one.
    105AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:10
    Re: #102
Even with astroturfing, a bad work stays bad, though.
    108AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:15
    Re: #102
To use the baseball analogy again: that's like saying Nagashima and Ichiro became national stars on pure talent, but Shohei Ohtani just got carried by astroturfing and hired shills, so it feels wrong to include him.
Keep refusing to face reality and you're gonna lose your mind.

    Background and Talking Points

Ranking debates over Jump’s flagship titles are a perennial topic on Japanese message boards, and there’s no official, unified standard for judging them. In this thread too, opinions split depending on whether people weighed sales figures, worldwide name recognition, or the era a series came from, with candidates like Naruto, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Fist of the North Star, Captain Tsubasa, and Yu-Gi-Oh! all coming up. One post claimed that former Shueisha editor Kazuhiko Torishima had said Dragon Ball never quite matched Dr. Slump as a social phenomenon — a surprising point for readers unfamiliar with the Jump golden age that preceded Dragon Ball. Meanwhile, opinions on Demon Slayer were split over whether its success came down to the work’s own merits or to marketing and scalper-driven hype, reflecting how recent breakout hits often haven’t had their reputations fully settled yet. The one point everyone agreed on was that the Big 3 are on a different level entirely — but beyond that, the thread went on without ever landing on a clear ranking.

  • Foreign Media Slams Switch 2’s ‘Stellar Blade’ for Blurry, Blocky Visuals

Overseas gaming outlet Shacknews published a hands-on review of the Switch 2 version of “Stellar Blade.” While elements on par with the PS5 version — such as the physics simulation on the character’s hair — have been preserved, the review points out that the resolution is low, the upscaler can’t keep up, and the result is a noticeably blocky image. In battle scenes especially, the game struggles to keep pace, and in handheld mode the roughness is even more pronounced due to the characteristics of the Switch 2’s LCD screen. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, the report sparked debate over the validity of the optimization method and comparisons of sales figures with other platforms.

The Switch 2 version of “Stellar Blade” is, on paper, an impressive technical feat — but it comes with a big cost.

It’s commendable that it retains all the physics simulation found in other versions of the game, like Eve’s hair swaying and bouncing as she runs. However, it’s clearly running at a very low resolution, and the upscaler can’t keep up.

The result is a noticeably blocky, pixelated, unsightly mess. But it’s in the combat scenes where the whole experience really falls apart. The game moves far faster than its rendering pipeline can handle, so while it’s playable, the quality of the experience is significantly degraded — especially in handheld mode, where the Switch 2’s relatively cheap LCD screen makes the image quality even worse.

Having played the demo, the effect was obvious. Surprisingly,
the least noticeable flaw was the latency. I don't know if the game
was tuned to reduce latency, or if ShiftUp really did 'optimize the rendering pipeline,'
but I was able to land parries pretty much exactly when I wanted to.

No lag issues?? Switch 2 is insane lmaooo

A desperate measure, but maybe they figured leaning into one strength beats a half-assed port across the board?

    Re: #9
If this is true, I really want to know how they pulled it off!
Though it's not just applicable to Switch 2 — it could apply to PS5 too (and definitely with even better performance there), so lol the gap might just widen even more

Wasn't this a PlayStation exclusive at first?
    18AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:51

Yeah, it had a timed exclusive that didn't sell great, then it blew up on Steam and PlayStation fanboys were furious about it.
    51AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:40
    Re: #18
Isn't 'furious' a word that started getting used with Korean MMOs?
Well, it's different from something a big-name publisher hyped up under its own brand.
I've never actually seen posts of PS fanboys being angry.
It was From Software and NieR fans running wild spreading rumors in threads and raiding streams.
Saw one guy get comment-banned — the funny part was he threw in a 500 yen donation when he came back.

The PS5 version sold 2 million copies.
Also, most of the Steam sales are from China.
    15AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:49
The Switch 2 version's gonna outsell everything anyway lol
There's never been a single multiplatform title where the PS5 version outsold it once you count digital sales lol
    21AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:54
    Re: #15
Steam's easily cleared 3 million, so that's just not happening.
PS5 is estimated to be under 1 million,
so there's at least some chance of it beating PS5.
    20AnonymousSep 7, 2026 20:52
They mentioned stacking FSR frame generation on top of DLSS, which sounded brutal, so I kind of saw this coming.

I'm watching this on a small 1080p PC monitor, so I can't make out any noticeable block noise or whatever — even fullscreen, I have zero complaints (at most I notice the resolution dip a bit when effects pile up and things move fast).

For anyone with like a 4K 50-inch monitor, what's it look like if you set playback to 2160p60fps? Does the block noise actually stand out that much?

From a quick read, this article seems to be talking about handheld mode.

If it's fine in TV mode, it should be fine in handheld mode too.
That's just how Switch hardware works.
If anything, handheld mode often ends up looking relatively better.

NCsoft's new title — the company where the ShiftUp folks used to work.
How about comparing it to From Software games?
For some reason From's games have bits that resemble this here and there.

    64AnonymousSep 7, 2026 21:58
The Switch 2 version's graphics look kind of plasticky while in motion, but
back when this game came out on PS5, capture software couldn't even keep up during streams — action RPG streamers who'd never had lag or freezing issues before suddenly ran into them for the first time.
That's why some streamers lowered their stream quality, or pushed through anyway and ended up with noise or choppy frame rates.
    67AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:03
    Re: #64
That noise is from the capture card or the streaming platform, though…

Isn't Re: #1 about impressions from an actual hands-on with the hardware?
    65AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:01
Would be nice if this technique could be refined and shared so all sorts of publishers could use it.

    Re: #65
Combining DLSS and FSR was already tested ages ago as a PC hobbyist gimmick.
Obviously it causes latency and visual breakdown — the final answer on that was already settled: don't do it.
    70AnonymousSep 7, 2026 22:08
    Re: #68
But nobody's settled the question of what happens if a publisher leverages a console's fixed-spec advantage and builds a dedicated, heavily optimized version of that same combination from the ground up.

Phones can't handle complex movement like this, though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Stellar Blade” originally launched as a PS5 exclusive before later getting a PC (Steam) release, and this Switch 2 port is an extension of that trajectory. The thread’s main point of contention was the legitimacy of the optimization method Shacknews reported — said to combine DLSS and FSR frame generation. Some argued a similar combination has long been tested on PC and deemed impractical due to latency and visual breakdown issues, while others suggested results could differ if a publisher built it specifically for dedicated hardware. The original article particularly flags the drop in image quality in handheld mode, which may be influenced by the characteristics of the Switch 2’s budget LCD screen — a different condition from docked mode. Many of the thread’s replies about sales figures were unsourced speculation, so all the numbers should be read as unconfirmed.
