  • Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi: ‘Regular Cigarettes Reek’ — Yet We’re Stuck in the Same Smoking Area, He Admits

Ichiro Yamaguchi of the rock band Sakanaction opened up about smoking on the September 1 broadcast of “Sakanaction Ichiro Yamaguchi’s All Night Nippon.” Responding to a listener’s email arguing that “no matter how busy work gets, or even if you’re at Disneyland with your family, you still need a cigarette break,” Yamaguchi admitted feeling guilty toward non-smokers but agreed it “can’t be helped.” A self-declared e-cigarette user, he reportedly complained about how strong regular cigarette smoke smells, and how painful it is to be lumped together with pack-a-day smokers in the smoking area. On 5channel, opinion split down the middle over whether e-cigarettes or regular/heated tobacco smell worse, with many commenters also pointing out that he was mixing up the terminology.

Ichiro Yamaguchi of the rock band Sakanaction appeared on the September 1 broadcast of “Sakanaction Ichiro Yamaguchi’s All Night Nippon” (Nippon Broadcasting) and revealed something he finds tough about using smoking areas.

That day, a listener wrote in: “No matter how busy work gets, or even when you’re at Disneyland doing family stuff, you still need a cigarette break — that’s just how it is, right?”

Yamaguchi, a smoker himself, said, “I really do feel sorry toward all the non-smokers out there,” but agreed with the listener that “it can’t be helped.”

IQOS smelled terrible when it first came out.
These days e-cigarettes don't smell as bad, and you don't have to worry about nicotine stains either.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, products commonly called “e-cigarettes” actually fall into two distinct categories: nicotine-containing heated tobacco products (like IQOS or glo, which heat real tobacco leaf) and nicotine-free VAPE devices that heat a liquid. The two differ in both regulation and chemical makeup, but they’re routinely conflated in everyday conversation. Commenters picked up on this distinction, and much of the thread’s confusion stemmed from the fact that it was never clear which type Yamaguchi actually meant by “e-cigarette.” The debate mainly split over which smell was worse: some argued regular cigarettes have a harsh, burnt odor, while others countered that the sickly-sweet smell of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco is even more nauseating — with many pointing out that, to non-smokers, both are equally unpleasant. It was also notable that Yamaguchi’s stance — apologizing to non-smokers while still shrugging it off as “unavoidable” — drew both sympathy and pushback in roughly equal measure.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi, a self-declared e-cigarette user, confesses the pain of it all: ‘Regular cigarettes really stink,’ ‘yet we get shut in the same smoking area together…’“

  • Parent Slammed for Giving Kid a Non-Alcoholic Drink, 5ch Split Down the Middle

A social media post about giving a child a non-alcoholic drink drew a wave of criticism, sparking discussion on a 5ch thread. Under Japan’s Liquor Tax Act, “non-alcoholic” beverages with under 1% alcohol content aren’t classified as alcohol, and most domestic products are labeled 0.00%. The “not recommended for under 20” notice isn’t a legal age restriction either — it’s just a voluntary industry standard. The thread split between skeptics asking “is there any reason besides showing off?” and defenders arguing “it’s basically juice, so getting mad about it is the weird part,” with plenty of posts turning to psychoanalyze the critics themselves.

    Exactly this.
People whose lives aren't going well just find someone to hate on.

They can only parent in their fantasies,
so unless it matches their shallow idea of "my perfect parenting," you're a "toxic parent."

You even get people on social media going "if you're a real parent, make your crying kid stop crying NOW!! Look like you're sorry!!"
But fantasy parenting is like inputting a command and the kid stops crying — reality doesn't work that way.
Most parents, the second their kid starts crying, at least bow their head once like "ah… sorry…"

    Watching idiots like this,
    you can tell REAL clearly
that people whose lives aren't going well are attacking out of pure 'jealousy' —
"in my fantasy parenting I'd do it better, so why does that guy get praised and not me?"

    These people are sick.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Under Japan’s Liquor Tax Act, a drink only needs to be under 1% alcohol to be labeled “non-alcoholic” — since it’s considered non-intoxicating, it isn’t classified as alcohol. Most major domestic brands list 0.00% on the label, but some candies like whiskey bonbons and certain other drinks do contain trace amounts of alcohol, and the thread often conflated the two. There’s also a common misunderstanding that the “not recommended for under 20” warning is a legal age restriction — it’s actually just a voluntary industry guideline, not something set by the Liquor Tax Act. What really divided the thread wasn’t the act itself but the motives of the critics: some saw the backlash as driven by “jealousy” or people with too much time on their hands, while others took the cooler view that posting online invites exactly this kind of reaction. Some posters brought up the Kura Sushi prize-reselling controversy for comparison, hinting at a broader fatigue with how easily things blow up online these days.

  • Heavy Rain Warning Issued for 13 Prefectures Across Kanto, Tokai, and Tohoku — 5ch: “We’re Only Being Saved by Chiba and Ibaraki”

On September 6, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that 13 prefectures across the Kanto, Tokai, and Tohoku regions face a risk of warning-level heavy rain and landslides, urging strict vigilance through around September 10. On 5ch’s Newsflash+ (Niupura) thread, a wave of posts pointed out — while watching the live rain-cloud radar — that “only Tokyo seems to be dodging the rain,” while others sparked a debate over the repeated heavy-rain alerts themselves, with critics arguing this is “crying wolf, which is actually dangerous,” and others countering that “disaster preparedness isn’t about whether a warning turns out right or wrong,” turning the thread into a broader argument over how such warnings should be issued.

There are idiots who say exaggerating like this to raise awareness is important, but if you keep crying wolf over and over, people stop trusting the JMA at all and start acting on their own judgment instead. Given the risk of getting caught in a disaster because of that, what actually matters is how accurately you can forecast things. Repeatedly lying that something is "many times more dangerous" is absolutely not a good thing.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

When the Japan Meteorological Agency specifically flags “warning-level heavy rain,” it’s a more assertive form of advisory than usual, issued when there’s a risk of conditions serious enough to trigger record-breaking short-term rainfall alerts or special warnings. This time it covers 13 prefectures across the Kanto, Tokai, and Tohoku regions, with a notably wide window running through around September 10. What split opinion in the thread was the merit of this kind of early warning itself: posts arguing that “repeating exaggerated warnings like this just turns into crying wolf, which is actually more dangerous” were met with pushback that “disaster preparedness is about being ready, not about whether the warning turns out right or wrong.” It’s worth noting that official reports use deliberately broad phrasing like “a period during which [heavy rain] is possible” — not a definitive forecast, a distinction readers can easily miss. Comments suggesting levees are being deliberately breached are baseless speculation and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

  • Man Arrested for Groping Woman in Sapporo Subway Station on Non-Consensual Indecency Charges — 5ch: ‘No Doubt About It’

A man was arrested on suspicion of non-consensual indecency after allegedly touching a woman’s lower body in a subway concourse in Sapporo. A passerby reported, “There’s a man touching a woman’s genitals,” and the man reportedly admitted to the charge, saying, “There’s no doubt I touched her lower body.” On 5ch’s Newsplus board, opinions split between those who suspected the pair might just have been a couple getting handsy in public and those who thought the woman was drunk and unable to resist. Others pointed to past group indecency cases, arguing that any non-consensual act is a serious crime regardless.

"There's no doubt I touched her lower body"

Background and Key Points of This Story

The crime of non-consensual indecency was newly established in Japan’s 2023 revision of the Penal Code. Its key difference from the older quasi-forcible indecency statute is that it hinges on whether the other party consented, rather than on whether violence or intimidation was involved. Since the man has admitted to the charge himself, the bar for prosecution is thought to be low. On the thread, opinions split between “if it was just a couple fooling around, it’s a shame the one who got reported” and “it’s a public space, so it’s a problem regardless of consent” — and the discussion proceeded without much clarity on the difference in scope between public indecency and non-consensual indecency. The fact that the investigation was triggered solely by a bystander’s report also raises the question of whether privacy or public safety should take priority.

  • Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Runway at Miami Airport, 5 Dead — 5ch: ‘It Crashed Into a Tesla Parking Lot’

On the 6th (local time), an Amazon-operated cargo plane overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport in the US, catching fire and slamming into an adjacent parking lot. According to Bloomberg, the crash killed at least 5 people and injured 5 others, forcing a temporary closure of the airport’s runway. On 5ch, posters raised technical theories about the cause — a tailwind landing, nose gear damage, shifted cargo — while also zeroing in on reports that the plane plowed into a parking lot used for Tesla’s robotaxis.

    American black humor:
'Oh my God!' → 'How blasphemous of you!' (a joke on how literally invoking God's name sounds sacrilegious once translated)

Background and key points of this story

Amazon operates its own dedicated cargo airline, ‘Prime Air’ (formerly Amazon Air), and the aircraft that caught fire is believed to belong to this fleet. On 5ch, multiple theories circulated — a tailwind landing, nose gear damage, shifted cargo — but these are all speculation from posters, and the actual cause will have to wait for findings from US investigators (the NTSB or its equivalent). Some drew comparisons to the landing-gear damage incident at Hiroshima Airport, but the aircraft type and circumstances differ, so a simple comparison isn’t warranted. There were also reports that the vehicles lined up in the parking lot the plane crashed into were Tesla’s test robotaxis, which appears to be one reason the damage extended beyond the runway itself. True to the board’s character, wisecracks mocking Amazon Prime sat side by side with genuine technical analysis of the crash’s cause in the same thread, despite the seriousness of the accident.

  • Rosy Chronicle Unveils New Artist Photos — Gothic Lolita Costumes Spark Mixed Reactions

The latest artist photos of Rosy Chronicle, a newer group under Hello! Project, became a hot topic on a thread at 5ch’s “Hello! Project” board. Reactions were split over the Gothic Lolita-style costumes the group has worn since their hit single “Mizery” — some pointed out that only one arm is left bare, or called the outfits “stifling,” while others defended the direction outright, noting that “Mizery” is their most-streamed song on the Hello! Background and Key Points of Discussion

Rosy Chronicle is a newer group under Hello! Project that broke through with its signature song “Mizery,” built around a Gothic Lolita-style look and world. Thread posters see the new artist photos as a continuation of that same direction. Supporters point out that “Mizery” is their most-streamed track on the Hello! Project subscription service, while others call the costumes “stifling” or say they “don’t suit” the members, voicing fatigue with the aesthetic overall — leaving opinion split. Some questioned the choice to leave only one arm sleeveless, and a few offered the harsher read that the group may be leaning on a striking visual concept to compensate for weaker individual visuals. Note that the rumored launch of a rival trainee unit called “Lily Chronicle” is unconfirmed chatter from within the thread, not an official announcement. A separate mention of Morning Musume.’s concert costumes also having a Gothic Lolita look is an unrelated aside that came up in the thread and isn’t directly connected to the Rosy Chronicle discussion.

  • New Xbox ‘Fable’ Trailer Draws Rave Reviews — Some Fans Calling It a ‘Masterpiece’

New footage from Xbox’s upcoming RPG ‘Fable’ has been released, sparking a wave of reactions on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha). Fans praised the game’s high degree of freedom — you can marry, have affairs, and even run a kingdom — as well as graphical touches like detailed armor, though some voiced concerns about the combat system and frame rate. The game is being developed by Playground Games, the studio behind the ‘Forza Horizon’ series, and threads speculated about the release date amid talk of GTA6’s delay. While the series is popular in North America, it’s relatively unknown in Japan, and the thread also lit up with comparisons to other popular RPGs.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

‘Fable’ is a highly open-ended action RPG series originally created by the UK’s Lionhead Studios, which became popular after its 2004 debut but had gone without a new entry for a long time. This new installment is being handled by Playground Games, the Xbox Game Studios subsidiary known for the racing series ‘Forza Horizon,’ making this notable as the studio’s first RPG. Thread reactions were split: some praised the feel of the combat and the graphical detail, while others pointed out the frame rate and repetitive combat system. It’s also a period when release-date jockeying among publishers is a hot topic due to ‘GTA6’s delay, so speculation about Fable’s launch window was rampant as well. The game is said to support Japanese subtitles, though it’s worth noting — a point easy to misunderstand — that content may vary by region due to ratings considerations.

  • “Is There Any Point to Zelda’s 40th Anniversary?” — 5ch Debate Erupts Comparing It to Mario’s 40th

A thread titled “Zelda’s 40th Anniversary — Is There Any Point to This?” went up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (aka “Geha,” short for ゲームハード/game hardware), sparking a debate over Nintendo’s apparent plans for a Legend of Zelda 40th-anniversary push. The spark was a comparison to “Mario’s 40th,” which last year rolled out on a huge scale — a movie, a Nintendo Museum exhibit, a pro-baseball crossover, and more. Against the view that “anniversary campaigns for unpopular IPs are pointless,” other posters brought up counterexamples: the commemorative PS5 for PlayStation’s 30th anniversary (2024) and the Zelda-themed Game & Watch for Zelda’s 35th, both of which reportedly still have unsold new stock sitting around. As the thread went on, it drifted away from whether anniversary events matter at all and settled into a circular argument over one specific question: does an anniversary’s value depend entirely on how popular the IP is?

    'Half-anniversaries' are a good example.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Legend of Zelda first released in 1986, putting it right around its 40th anniversary in 2026. The thread’s point of comparison, “Mario’s 40th anniversary,” was a large-scale 2025 celebration with a movie, museum exhibits, and merchandise; “PlayStation’s 30th anniversary” refers to the real commemorative-design PS5 that shipped in 2024. The actual argument here isn’t really about whether anniversary events are worth doing in general — it boils down to one specific question: does the value of an anniversary campaign depend on whether the IP is popular? Skeptics point to leftover stock from the old Game & Watch and the anniversary PS5 as proof that “if the merch doesn’t sell out, it wasn’t worth it,” while defenders fire back with “show us the receipts” on actual sales, and the exchange never really resolves either way. Note: “Nishi-kun,” used throughout, is stock slang on the Geha board for Nintendo’s fanbase — board-specific ribbing, not an attack on any real individual. Separately, one string of replies that singled out and mocked a specific regular poster by name has been left out of this excerpt, since it has no bearing on the actual topic.

  • Switch 2 Sales Crash to 6,000 Units a Week in North America After Price Hike

Nintendo Switch 2 got a price hike in North America on September 1, 2026, and a post claiming its weekly sales immediately fell to roughly “6,000 units in a week” (based on overseas retailer bestseller rankings) became a hot topic on 5ch’s hardware/industry (“Geha”) board. The thread was split on whether this was just the comedown from pre-hike rush buying or the price hike itself biting into sales, and the discussion expanded into comparisons with PS5’s sales figures, the ranking of Nintendo/PlayStation/Xbox gift card sales, and predictions for Switch 2’s eventual lifetime sales (ranging from 80 million to over 100 million units).

Since Switch 2's worldwide total is currently about 4x its Japan number, if it keeps that pace overseas, that's 80-90 million over 10 years.

    Re: #104
Wasn't July down 51% year-over-year? August probably looked a bit better from last-minute rush buying, but from September on… yikes.

Background and key points of this discussion

Switch 2 got a price change (increase) in North America on September 1, 2026, and this thread was sparked by a post claiming that weekly sales immediately after fell to roughly “6,000 units a week,” a figure back-calculated from some retailers’ bestseller rankings. As the body text notes, this is an estimate derived from partial retailer rankings, not an official tally like NPD’s. The thread was split between those who saw it as “the comedown after a temporary spike from pre-hike rush buying” and those who blamed the price hike itself for the slowdown. In comparisons with PS5, commenters pointed out that PS5 is already in its 6th-7th year (late in its console life cycle) while Switch 2 has only just entered its 2nd year — a difference in release timing worth keeping in mind, since a simple weekly-unit comparison alone can be misleading. The lifetime sales predictions floated in the thread (from 80 million to over 100 million units) are speculation from the discussion itself, not official figures from Nintendo.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry “Geha”) thread “[Bad News] Switch 2 Starting to Feel the Effects of the North American Price Hike.”

  • Was Switch 2’s Launch Timing Just Lucky? 5ch: ‘PS5’s Was the Riskier Bet’

We’re covering a thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board that kicked off with a Nintendo fan’s post claiming “Switch 2 got incredibly lucky, launching right before the economy went south.” The post came as Switch 2 entered its second year on the market, facing growing headwinds from soaring semiconductor and memory prices. Some commenters dismissed the take as “naive,” while others looked back at Nintendo’s console history, arguing things like “PS5’s timing was actually far more precarious” and “most of Nintendo’s hardware fortunes have come down to their own decisions.” Opinions were split on both Switch 2’s sales trajectory and where memory prices are headed next.

They genuinely believe this, which is why they're still swinging the Switch bat around

    Re: #20
Seriously, it's always this exact argument, it's exhausting
    28AnonymousSep 7, 2026 11:43
    Re: #20
Comparing Switch and PS5 generation-wise is only natural, isn't it
PS6 isn't out yet so it's not even in the ring
    75AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:37
    Re: #20
Generation-wise it does line up, so it can't be helped
Because the Wii U's short lifespan pushed Nintendo into releasing their next-gen hardware early
    30AnonymousSep 7, 2026 11:45
I also think Switch2 barely made it in time to be saved
Not sure what's so funny about that

    Re: #30
It sold 20,000 units this week, so what do you think happens from here?
It costs 60,000 yen, you know?

That first-year cushion is shrinking fast now
Europe barely has a trace left either
    What happens now?

See, I'm properly drawing the line between year one and year two here
    33AnonymousSep 7, 2026 11:49
2024 was when they kept cranking out Mario titles on Switch1 to keep it on life support
If they'd released Switch2 back then, the future would've looked different

There's no actual numbers out for Europe though
Sites like VGChartz just make stuff up, so it's meaningless

    Re: #44
    That's just a forced argument
What matters is how the original Switch compares in the latest earnings figures, and the year-over-year numbers, right?

    Got any actual counterargument?

    Switch2 isn't underperforming at all
    What you're saying is nonsense

PS5 was the one that actually launched right at the edge of good timing

    This exactly

Switch2 is what happens when you coast on Switch's pandemic-era success like an idiot and end up in this state

    What happened to that cushion?
    64AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:28
What's Sony even planning to do then (´・ω・`)
Fanboys love saying "They don't need to release until 2030!" but if you want to launch in 2030, contracts need to be locked in by 2028. That's obviously going to be expensive.
Conversely, if you sign the contracts in 2030, the actual launch won't happen until 2032 or later

And by the way, memory prices won't be back to normal even by 2030
Unlike COVID, AI demand isn't a temporary blip, so you'd better assume it's never coming back down

    Re: #64
    >And by the way, memory prices won't be back to normal even by 2030

Ever heard of the "silicon cycle" or the "super silicon cycle"?
    71AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:34
    Re: #70
Why don't you just Google it?

Re: #64's argument is basically "this time it's a super silicon cycle! (unlike the past)"
    89AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:49
    Re: #87
SK Hynix's own line is that this situation is a "super cycle" that blows past the normal silicon cycle

I honestly can't tell what ID:tdpsIei20 is trying to argue
If you're saying it's a "super silicon cycle" beyond even a super cycle
then Re: #64's point is correct, isn't it
    68AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:33
PS5's already dead and Sony can't even release PS6 — that's the real crisis here
    73AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:36
    Re: #68
They're projecting 660 billion yen in operating profit, so what exactly is the crisis?
    84AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:44
    Re: #68
That's not a crisis at all
Are you getting played by Geha (the console-war forum) hype? Have you actually checked the earnings report?
    70AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:33
    Re: #66
Isn't it just the "silicon cycle" / "super cycle"?
Is "super silicon cycle" even a real term?
    Well, I dunno though

    Re: #61
Now that you mention it, Switch2's second year has only been going a few months, hasn't it?
Isn't it too early to even compare?
    77AnonymousSep 7, 2026 12:37
    Re: #74
    You can compare it

Because there's a new negative factor: price hikes starting this month in the US and Europe too
Needless to say that includes Korea as well, and Re: #7 is worth looking at for how that plays out

It's not a factor you can just ignore

Background and Key Points of Debate

The backdrop here is the surge in semiconductor memory (DRAM and NAND) prices that has continued since around 2025. Explosive demand for AI has kept supply tight, and PC and console makers alike are facing rising production costs. Where the thread split was over whether this price surge is a temporary “silicon cycle” or a “new normal” where prices never return to previous levels. Switch2, having launched in 2025, appears to have secured production stock made before the price hikes, but the post doesn’t offer concrete statistics on post-hike sales trends or the reported slump in the European market — it’s mostly left to individual commenters’ interpretations. It’s also worth noting that the generational comparison between PS5 and PS6 remains speculative, since PS6 itself hasn’t even been announced.
