  • Traits of ‘boring to be around’ people spark discussion — 5ch: ‘They criticize but never offer an alternative’

A thread on 5ch’s “Everything Live G” board asking users to describe “traits of people who are boring to be around” drew a flood of responses. The answers largely boiled down to four patterns: “they criticize but never offer an alternative,” “they won’t act until they’ve checked how the internet reacted,” “they only ever talk about themselves,” and “they just agree with everything and never state their own opinion.” Notably, as the thread went on, a wave of self-deprecating replies like “wait, isn’t this just… us?” turned the conversation on its head — what started as griping about other people ended up boomeranging back as a joke at the posters’ own expense.

    ● The moment you realize: "Being with this person is somehow boring"
It's not that they're bad at conversation. They're not the quiet type either. And yet — isn't there always that one person who leaves you thinking, "Somehow, being with them is just… boring"?
    ● No matter what you suggest, it's always "Yeah, but…"

    Background and Talking Points

Threads asking users to profile “people who are boring to be around” are a recurring staple on 5ch and aggregator sites — this isn’t a psychologically grounded classification, just a grab-bag of subjective anecdotes gathered on an anonymous message board. What stood out this time was that many of the traits called out — “criticizes but never offers an alternative,” “won’t move until checking how the internet reacted,” and so on — closely mirrored posting habits commonly seen on the Everything G board itself. Sure enough, replies like “well, that’s basically us” and “so it’s just us, then” kept popping up, turning what started as criticism of other people into a running joke at the posters’ own expense. It reads less as a genuine character study of other people than as a piece of self-referential anonymous-board humor to be enjoyed as such.

  • State of Play View Count Controversy: From 100K Right After Airing to Nearly 800K in Two Days

On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board (Geha), a thread blew up over the view count for PlayStation’s “State of Play (Japanese)” broadcast: it sat at around 100,000 views by 10pm on the day it aired, but climbed to nearly 800,000 in under two days. Posters pointed out that YouTube changed how it counts views around August 24, 2026, making it easier for even brief watches to register — but others noted a similar spike happened around the same time on the “PLAY!PLAY!PLAY!” show slot, splitting opinion on whether this is a site-wide YouTube change or padding by a specific channel.

Why does a broadcast that started at 10pm — prime time for Japanese viewers — cap out at only 100,000 views,

then explode to several times that in just two days…

    They’re 100% buying views…

It counts autoplays from 'Recommended' too now (the paid-placement kind where you pay YouTube to get featured).
YouTube's apparently been declining lately, so some say this is just padding numbers to impress advertisers.

For what it's worth, a higher view count doesn't change what YouTube actually pays the channel.

    >That said, this has no effect on revenue. Ad revenue calculations and eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) still rely on 'engaged views' and engaged watch time — a metric counting views that lasted beyond the first few seconds, which is essentially how view counts used to be measured. This can be checked in YouTube Analytics' detailed mode.

Spec change or not, view counts are normally all over the place from video to video, and only genuinely popular videos keep climbing afterward.
Having practically identical average view counts across the board is basically a confession that something's being done.
If you're gonna do it, at least do it so it's not this obvious.

    Re: #101
Isn't that just you talking to yourself and making noise all alone? lol

    Background and Key Points

YouTube treats view counts as two separate metrics: “engaged views” (views watched for more than a few seconds), which is used to determine ad revenue and eligibility requirements, and the plain “view count” that’s simply displayed on screen. The spec change around August 24 that sparked this thread only made the latter, on-screen number easier to inflate — YouTube itself has stated that the standards for calculating revenue haven’t changed. In other words, even a sudden surge in views doesn’t mean more ad revenue for the creator; it only changes how things look to advertisers. What still stirred controversy was the observation that only videos tied to titles with poor domestic sales showed an unnaturally uniform pattern of view growth — a pattern the spec change alone doesn’t fully explain, keeping suspicion alive. Sony has history here too: its stealth-marketing tactics were called out in the past over the “David Manning affair,” in which it used quotes from a fabricated film critic in its ads, so this incident drew suspicion once again, even with the truth still unconfirmed.

  • Kura Sushi’s Not-for-Sale Chiikawa Merch Leaked by Stores Before Launch — 5ch: ‘Stealing Is Now the Optimal Strategy’

In Kura Sushi’s collaboration campaign with the character Chiikawa, non-for-sale merchandise that was supposed to be handed out only via lottery or exchange has reportedly leaked out of some stores before the campaign even officially began, sparking a stir on 5ch. Thread posters speculated that stores may have quietly given the leftover prizes away for free to customers to cover up a stock discrepancy, and voices in the thread worried about the items being resold at inflated prices on flea-market apps, and about Chiikawa’s side potentially pulling out of the collaboration altogether. Some pointed out that similar “leaks” had happened with past collaboration goods too, framing it as an industry-wide problem.

    Re: #76
    Pretty clearly, yeah.
The goal was probably to make the missing stock look accounted for by claiming it went to customers.

    Or they're just idiots.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Non-for-sale merchandise from corporate collaborations like this is normally tracked by head office in advance, with inventory counts set per store for the campaign period — a mismatch in the numbers before the campaign even starts isn’t supposed to happen in the first place. Thread speculation suggests that stores may have balanced the books by claiming items were “given to customers,” covering for stock that part-timers or others had taken home personally or pulled aside to resell on flea-market sites — but the posts don’t reveal how much head office actually knew or what action, if any, was taken. Others pointed out that non-for-sale banners from the Kantai Collection x Lawson collaboration have repeatedly turned up for sale on the market as well, suggesting that lax management of non-for-sale novelties isn’t unique to this case. Meanwhile, some posts tied the incident to a broader decline in “the moral standards of Japanese people,” but that’s a sweeping generalization on a different level from individual acts of misconduct, and it’s worth noting there’s no actual evidence backing that claim.

  • Nintendo vs. PlayStation Stream Viewer Gap Reignites Market Share Debate — 5ch: ‘Concurrent Viewers Were the Answer All Along’

Nintendo’s new-releases showcase “Nintendo Direct” pulled in roughly 1 million concurrent viewers, while Sony’s “State of Play” topped out at just 50,000–100,000 — sparking a debate over game market share on 5ch’s hardware/industry board. Posters pushed back on the idea that concurrent viewer counts alone can settle the market-share question, citing other data instead: first-week sales comparisons for Elden Ring, a Tokyo Game Show attendee survey, and an age-bracket survey from marketing firm Cross Marketing. Opinions split over whether Nintendo really is the overwhelming majority, or whether the results just shift depending on how you measure them.

    State of Play: 50,000–100,000

Well, for hardcore Nintendo-brand fans it's Nintendo first, Pokémon second, nothing in third or fourth place, and third parties a distant fifth — and even those third-party hits tend to be stuff like Power Pros or Momotaro Dentetsu.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Concurrent viewer count” simply measures how many people tuned in to a broadcast — it doesn’t directly translate into unit sales or the number of hardware owners. Domestic game sales are usually gauged by Famitsu’s weekly rankings, but digital-download tallying methods vary by outlet, and since both Nintendo and Sony sell digital versions, straightforward comparisons are tricky. The Tokyo Game Show attendee survey is also prone to skew, since the people who actually show up tend to be core gamers, which may not reflect the real market makeup. And as the Cross Marketing survey cited in the thread shows, results can shift dramatically depending on which age group you look at — a detail that’s easy to overlook. What this thread’s back-and-forth ultimately shows is that which platform is “winning” can look completely different depending on whether you measure by concurrent viewers, sales figures, or survey data.

  • Kura Sushi Pulls ‘Chiikawa’ Collab After Staff Theft — 10% Off Everything Can’t Stop Customers From Fleeing, Reservations Pile Up Cancelled

On September 6, Kura Sushi cancelled its collaboration campaign with the popular character “Chiikawa” after it emerged that an employee had improperly taken campaign prizes. The chain posted apology notices at the entrances of every store, and as a gesture of apology began offering 10% off all items starting on the 6th — but many customers who had come specifically for the merchandise turned around and left without even entering once they learned the campaign was cancelled, and reservation cancellations piled up as well. On 5ch, discussion ranged from comparisons with the string of scandals at rival conveyor-belt sushi chains like Hama Sushi, Sushiro, and Kappa Sushi, to debate over how far the prize theft could be pursued as a criminal matter, to criticism of the chain’s lack of anti-scalping measures and flaws in its reservation system.

Sponichi Annex, delivered 9/7 (Mon) 5:30

Kura Sushi cancelled its collaboration campaign with the popular character “Chiikawa” on the 6th. On the 5th, the company had announced that an employee had embezzled campaign prizes. The following day, every store put up a notice at its entrance reading, “Due to the discovery of misconduct by one of our employees, we have decided to cancel the campaign. We deeply apologize.” The company also began offering 10% off all items from the 6th “as a token of our apology.”

At a store in Tokyo, staff stood at the entrance all day dealing with customers. Many people who had come for the Chiikawa merchandise turned around and left as soon as they heard the campaign had ended. A staffer sighed, “Even though it’s lunchtime, quite a lot of people are turning away without coming in.”

Hama Sushi — dish soap dumped everywhere (viral staff-prank clip)

Kappa Sushi — kappas forced into underground labor

In the basement of Kappa Sushi, captured kappa (the mythical water-goblin the chain is named after) are forced to make sushi while crying.
Their pay is a single cucumber a day.
Kappa Sushi's full-time staff keep constant watch so the kappa can't escape or slack off.
To keep them scared, they're randomly given pointless electric shocks.
Most of the kappa are children, always crying, "I want to see my mom and dad!"
They're barely allowed any sleep, and talking back gets their cucumber ration cut.

By slashing labor costs like this, Kappa Sushi is able to bring you all cheap, delicious sushi.

Kura Sushi's prizes are honestly the best. Coco's ran three rounds of their own and they were pretty lame by comparison, though the parfait was tasty.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Kura Sushi is the industry’s second-largest conveyor-belt sushi chain behind Sushiro, and it has previously sparked debate over issues like the accuracy of its “no-add” labeling and changes to its shareholder benefits program. This latest controversy began with an employee improperly taking campaign merchandise, and since no actual money was stolen, thread discussion centered on how far this could realistically be prosecuted as theft or embezzlement. Because merchandise tied to the popular character Chiikawa is an easy target for scalpers to buy up in bulk, commenters also criticized the slack in the reservation system (which allowed bookings right up until closing time). At the same time, the incident tends to get lumped together with past scandals at rival chains — Hama Sushi’s detergent incident, Sushiro’s customer-misconduct “sushi terrorism” case, and Kappa Sushi’s trade-secret theft case — but the circumstances behind each and the standing of those involved (rank-and-file employee versus executive) differ, so it isn’t quite accurate to simply lump them all together as “every conveyor-belt sushi chain is the same.”

The panel showing Luffy dodging a giant’s blow used exaggerated gag-style art — his eyes popping out, his tongue stretching — drawing a wave of criticism calling it “gross” and “hard to follow visually,” while other posters defended it as simply “Oda’s idea of what makes One Piece feel like One Piece,” leaving opinion split. Some also pointed to reader survey data suggesting the manga’s core readership is skewing older.

Looking at this, in Tom and Jerry the original eyes stay put, so it just reads as a "shocked" expression — that's about all I get from it.
Maybe he avoided copying it exactly so people wouldn't call it a ripoff, but the One Piece version isn't a stylistic device at all, it's just a deformity.

Why did he abandon this direction?

Background and key points of this discussion

One Piece has run in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997, and from early on it has consistently mixed exaggerated gag-style art — like eyes popping out — into even its serious scenes. The thread’s disagreement centered on whether to accept this as a defining quirk the series has had from the start, or to see it as jarring now that the story has entered its tense, climactic final arc. Notably, most of the critical comments weren’t really objecting to the art style itself so much as questioning its balance against serious plot developments — a nuance that’s easy to miss amid the simpler “bad art” complaints. Also, the cited reader survey data has no clearly stated source, so the numbers themselves haven’t been verified.

  • M!LK’s Bid for a 2nd Straight Kohaku Appearance Clouded — 5ch: ‘NHK Is Being Way Too Arrogant’

Dance-and-vocal group M!LK is drawing attention over whether it can land a second straight appearance on NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Song Battle). The group made its Kohaku debut at the end of 2025, but according to Tokyo Sports, there was a moment during rehearsal that reportedly made staff frown. Some see a possible link to “Momoiro Uta Gassen,” the New Year’s Eve show hosted by labelmates Momoiro Clover Z, as part of the backdrop. On 5ch, comments split between questioning NHK’s attitude — letting a single rehearsal incident potentially decide the group’s fate — and debate over M!LK’s popularity and the appeal of their songs.

Will the five-member dance-and-vocal group M!LK land a second consecutive appearance on this year’s NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen? The group made its Kohaku debut on New Year’s Eve last year, but there reportedly was a moment during rehearsal that made staff frown. Perhaps because that “spark” is still smoldering, this year’s appearance looks uncertain. All eyes are on NHK’s judgment—

M!LK was formed in 2014. They debuted in March 2015 with the song “Coffee ga Nomemasen” (“I Can’t Drink Coffee”), but a slump followed. The tide turned last February, when their song “Ii Jan” (“It’s Fine, Isn’t It”) went viral on social media, and by October their track “Suki Sugite Metsu!” (“I Like You So Much It’s Destruction!”) had become a full-blown boom. So says an industry insider.

Yeah, and she's shown up on regular song contest shows too.

Background and Key Points of This Story

M!LK was formed in 2014 and, after a long slump, broke through in 2025 with the hits “Ii Jan” and “Suki Sugite Metsu!,” leading to their first Kohaku appearance at the end of that year. The group belongs to Stardust Promotion, the same agency as Momoiro Clover Z, which hosts its own New Year’s Eve music program — a connection that became one focal point of the thread. It’s worth noting that the original article’s claim about staff “frowning” comes from an anonymous, secondhand account, with no specifics on what actually happened; much of the pushback in the thread targeted that thin evidentiary basis and NHK’s attitude itself. Meanwhile, opinions on the group’s popularity and the quality of their songs were split, running as a separate thread of debate alongside the question of their Kohaku appearance.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] M!LK’s Bid for a 2nd Straight ‘Kohaku’ Appearance Clouded… What Was the ‘Scene’ Where Staff Frowned During Last Year’s Rehearsal [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Brazil-Raised Physics Professor Becomes Head Priest — 5ch: Jodo Shinshu Teachings Are “Basically Not a Religion”

Reports say that Choyu Otani (75), head priest (monshu) of the Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Buddhism), has published a book titled “Bom Amigo” chronicling his upbringing in Brazil and his path to becoming monshu, and spoke to the Kyoto Shimbun about it. It’s said to be unusual for a sitting head of the Otani-ha to publish a book of his own while still in office. On 5ch, the resulting thread’s discussion centered on just how different Jodo Shinshu’s doctrine is from other Buddhist sects — pointing to its lack of customs like memorial tablets or the welcoming/sending-off fires (mukaebi/okuribi), and its teaching that believers are reborn in the Pure Land immediately upon death. Frank reactions to the doctrine flew, including comments like “That’s basically no different from having no religion at all.”

“Bom Amigo,” a book by Choyu Otani (75), monshu of the Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu (head temple: Higashi Honganji), was published this past July. It chronicles his life from childhood through the many years he spent in Brazil, as well as his journey as the 26th monshu. Otani recently spoke with the Kyoto Shimbun about what led him to write the book, his day-to-day life as monshu, and his thoughts on Shinshu teachings.

It’s rare for a sitting Otani-ha monshu to publish a book. The impetus came from a writing request by the naikyoku, the branch’s executive body.

“I took office as monshu in 2020. Since last year marked the fifth anniversary of that, and with the World Fellowship Assembly being held in Brazil this month, the naikyoku asked me, ‘Would you be able to write a book if possible?’”

My grandmother used to give me allowance money, so as a kid I'd recite the Heart Sutra in front of the altar — probably my grandmother had one made because she asked for it

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu traces its founding to Shinran, with its head temple at Higashi Honganji in Kyoto. The role of monshu has historically passed down through Shinran’s descendants, but as the thread pointed out, both the Higashi and Nishi Honganji lines trace back not through Shinran’s male line but through the bloodline of his youngest daughter, Kakushinni — meaning it isn’t patrilineal succession. Under Jodo Shinshu doctrine, rebirth in the Pure Land is settled the moment one attains faith through Amida Buddha’s original vow, meaning that, strictly speaking, memorial tablets, ongoing memorial services, and death rites found in other sects and folk customs — like the mukaebi/okuribi welcoming and sending-off fires — aren’t actually necessary. The gap between this doctrine and the memorial services and donation customs actually practiced at temples was a point raised again and again in the thread, and it’s no wonder many people, unaware of the finer points of the doctrine, come away feeling it’s “basically not a religion.”

  • Sony’s New Showcase Falls Short of a Nintendo Direct? 5ch Split

Sony’s new product showcase “State of Play,” which aired on September 6, 2026, drew a wave of comments on 5ch’s gaming hardware board saying it “paled in comparison to a Nintendo Direct.” Alongside complaints about the shortage of new game reveals and the show’s pacing, posters noted that overseas reactions echoed the same criticism. Meanwhile, other posts pivoted to comparing the two companies’ revenue and sales figures, turning the discussion into something bigger than just a review of the broadcast itself.

Nintendo Direct wasn't great from day one either — they got there through repeated trial and error. It's kind of amazing that Sony, who's copying them, just keeps getting worse instead

Feels like after copying it, they try to differentiate themselves and add their own identity, and it just backfires
But since the original was a copy to begin with, they can't even tell what's bad, what's good, or what people actually wanted from it
    63AnonymousSep 6, 2026 20:09
    Re: #60
    Re: #58
Even if they wanted to copy it, they've got no material to work with
First-party comparisons go without saying, and third parties have no reason to reveal new titles on a stream with drastically lower concurrent viewers

Without the material, using the same format would just invite direct comparison and inevitably end up looking pathetically shabby
So they have no choice but to throw a curveball with a completely different structure
    69AnonymousSep 6, 2026 20:47
Even for multiplatform titles, showing off Switch 2 graphics in a Direct-style show would just amount to negative PR against themselves lol

But most third parties don't see it that way — that's exactly why more third-party titles are choosing Nintendo Direct for their first reveals and new trailers, while State of Play ends up looking like… well, this

Revenue: ¥4.7 trillion (hits a new all-time high every year)
    Profit: ¥470 billion
    Software units sold: 320 million
Monthly active users: 125 million (all-time high)

    ★ Nintendo
Revenue: ¥2.3 trillion ← Even in Switch 2's launch year, totally crushed by PS5 hahahaha
Profit: ¥320 billion ← Even in Switch 2's launch year, totally crushed by PS5 hahahaha
Software units sold: 32 million combined (Switch 1 + 2) ← Even in Switch 2's launch year, totally crushed by PS5 hahahaha
Monthly active users: ← Undisclosed — probably too embarrassing, since only the annual figure gets released hahahaha

Lack of cross-team communication is part of it, but fundamentally it's a company that wears its arrogance on its sleeve

They don't have even a shred of doubt that they might be wrong
They probably don't understand why they're unpopular, or why they get criticized and rated poorly every single time
And since their culture is to never admit failure and just pretend it never happened, they never reflect on it — so they keep repeating the same mistakes

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“State of Play” is Sony’s showcase for new titles, while “Nindai” is shorthand for Nintendo’s official equivalent — the two are frequently pitted against each other as venues for announcing new games. In recent years, buoyed partly by the strong performance of the Nintendo Switch 2, differences in presentation content and pacing between the two companies’ shows have become a recurring topic among gaming fans. The revenue, unit-sales, and monthly-active-user figures cited in the thread come from anonymous posts with no sources or methodology given, and should not be mistaken for official company disclosures. Likewise, the claim that Sony modeled its show format on Nintendo Direct is simply users’ impression, not a confirmed fact. Behind the split opinions on the broadcast lies more than just runtime or the number of titles announced — it also reflects a difference in approach, namely whether the focus is on updates to existing titles or on brand-new reveals.

  • NanG Users Are Getting Old, 5ch Says — ‘Too Many of Them Can’t Even Hold a Conversation’

A thread on “Nandemo Jikkyō G” — better known as NanG — on 5ch has sparked debate after a poster claimed “this board is nothing but washed-up old men whose lives are over,” pointing to the aging of its userbase. Some argued NanG’s average age crept up after crackdowns on lewd-image threads and a drop in visitors funneled in from aggregator (“matome”) sites, while others weighed in on how NanG’s crowd differs from that of its neighboring anti-corporate (“kenmo”) board, Edge. Commenters traded impressions like “five years ago it was full of young social misfits, but now it reeks of kenmo,” lobbing mutual jabs between NanG and Edge regulars until the thread turned into a self-deprecating debate about the very nature of the board itself.

Same crowd that uses the Chiikawa movie (a hit cute-character anime film) as a bludgeon in the movie threads.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The phrase that kicked off this thread — “this board is nothing but washed-up old men whose lives are over” — is a self-deprecating label commonly thrown around on anonymous message boards, not actual data on the board’s age makeup. NanG (Nandemo Jikkyō G) is a board once known for its lewd-image threads and copypasta culture, with a reputation for skewing young, and it’s often said to have “aged” following stricter content regulations and a drop in visitors arriving via aggregator sites. At the same time, the thread is also full of back-and-forth over how NanG’s userbase differs from — or stacks up against — its neighboring anti-corporate board Edge, with much of the exchange really driven by rivalry between the two boards. What readers should be careful not to misread is that the age references scattered through the posts — “50-somethings,” “the Ice Age generation,” and the like — are purely gut impressions drawn from the posts themselves, not the results of any actual survey by site administrators or a third party.
