Traits of ‘boring to be around’ people spark discussion — 5ch: ‘They criticize but never offer an alternative’

The story

A thread on 5ch’s “Everything Live G” board asking users to describe “traits of people who are boring to be around” drew a flood of responses. The answers largely boiled down to four patterns: “they criticize but never offer an alternative,” “they won’t act until they’ve checked how the internet reacted,” “they only ever talk about themselves,” and “they just agree with everything and never state their own opinion.” Notably, as the thread went on, a wave of self-deprecating replies like “wait, isn’t this just… us?” turned the conversation on its head — what started as griping about other people ended up boomeranging back as a joke at the posters’ own expense.

● The moment you realize: "Being with this person is somehow boring"
It's not that they're bad at conversation. They're not the quiet type either. And yet — isn't there always that one person who leaves you thinking, "Somehow, being with them is just… boring"?
● No matter what you suggest, it's always "Yeah, but…"

People who won't act until they've checked how the internet reacted
And on top of that, they'll cite "this is what people online are saying" as if it were their own personal experience

Re: #2
So many people on Tabelog (Japan's restaurant-review site, like Yelp) leave reviews like "food was great but a staff member had a bad attitude, so low rating"

You know the type — total trash who shoots down every idea but never comes up with an alternative
Well… that's basically us though
18AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:06
In reality, that same guy (or girl) probably tries all sorts of new things when they're out with someone other than you
22AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:11
Re: #18
Yeah, this is probably it
19AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:10
It's the type who never talks about themselves
Insanely boring
21AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:10
Honestly, it's a miracle a trip with someone like that even holds together
People like this can't function in a group to begin with
23AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:13
People who only ever agree
People who never voice their own opinion
24AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:14
People who only push their own opinion
and never listen to the other person's
25AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:18
People who shoot everything down right away, like the regulars on this board (G民, "G-board folks"), are boring
26AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:18
Even family members get on each other's nerves, so there's no such thing as a person who's fully satisfied being around anyone
If you're going to complain, just go do things alone
28AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:20
Figured it'd be the type who criticizes a lot, and yep, called it
Which is to say, basically us
30AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:21
The type who keeps telling themselves, "I'm not like these idiots who get swept up in every trend"
32AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:22
The kind of guy who starts even a thread like this one by shooting it down
33AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:23
You mean like OP (イッチ, thread starter), someone who just spouts excuse after lame excuse for not working?
34AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:23
Instead of coming up with reasons why you CAN'T do it!
38AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:31
instead of thinking up reasons why you can't do it! (written in childish hiragana, mocking the line above)
39AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:32
People like that are just cheapskates who hate spending money
But try telling them "this place is cheaper than that one," even if it's a lie
40AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:32
Basically, people without a core sense of self are boring — they keep flip-flopping on their own opinions, so you can't trust them
42AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:33
This type tends to have a huge ego, so they're a pain to deal with
43AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:34
Nah, it was probably one of those places where you go, "did we really need to go out of our way for this?"
44AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:35
The reason you guys keep getting shot down
is that your everyday behavior forces people to agree with you
55AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:44
I'm the type who makes excuses to avoid anything big that actually affects my life
but for trivial stuff like which restaurant to go to, I honestly don't care, so I'm pretty much fine with anything
58AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:49
Re: #55
There are also people who say "anything's fine" and then complain about it afterward, you know
60AnonymousSep 7, 2026 09:52
When I travel, I make a point of visiting all sorts of places just to confirm, "yep, that was boring, just like I thought"
That way I don't have to keep it as an option next time, so there's no more agonizing over choices

This summer in Hakone I went to the "Hakone Open-Air Museum" for the first time since a school field trip
I knew going in it'd be boring, and sure enough it was, but now I've got at least another 10+ years before I have to consider it as an option again

Re: #60
Is it the Open-Air Museum specifically that's bad, or are museums in general just not for you?

Background and Talking Points

Threads asking users to profile “people who are boring to be around” are a recurring staple on 5ch and aggregator sites — this isn’t a psychologically grounded classification, just a grab-bag of subjective anecdotes gathered on an anonymous message board. What stood out this time was that many of the traits called out — “criticizes but never offers an alternative,” “won’t move until checking how the internet reacted,” and so on — closely mirrored posting habits commonly seen on the Everything G board itself. Sure enough, replies like “well, that’s basically us” and “so it’s just us, then” kept popping up, turning what started as criticism of other people into a running joke at the posters’ own expense. It reads less as a genuine character study of other people than as a piece of self-referential anonymous-board humor to be enjoyed as such.
