Shoki Oda: “My resolve to challenge America hasn’t wavered” — No hesitation even after Giants make him their No. 1 pick

The story

At the Nippon Professional Baseball Draft Meeting, the Yomiuri Giants selected pitcher Shoki Oda (18) of Yokohama High School (Kanagawa) with their first-round pick — even though Oda had already declared his intention to pursue a career in the United States. Appearing live on air, Oda reaffirmed his stance: “My resolve to challenge America hasn’t wavered one bit.” On 5ch, discussion split between users suspicious of a possible “secret arrangement” between the Giants and Oda’s camp, and those expressing sympathy or criticism toward the Giants, who stand to forfeit their first-round pick entirely if he doesn’t sign — with posters also bringing up past cases involving other teams in similar spots.

The “NPB Draft Meeting, supported by Lipovitan D” was held on the 22nd at a hotel in Tokyo, where the Giants made the bold call of selecting pitcher Shoki Oda (18) of Yokohama High School (Kanagawa) with their No. 1 pick, despite his declared intent to try his luck in the majors. Oda, who also joined via live feed on TBS’s broadcast of the “2026 NPB Draft Meeting,” shared his current thoughts.

After a segment aired covering the struggle and emotions behind his decision to pursue America, Oda appeared live and spoke about being picked No. 1 by the Giants: “Honestly, I was surprised to be selected. It’s an incredibly honorable pick, but as I said at yesterday’s press conference, my resolve to challenge America hasn’t wavered one bit.”

Is there really no secret deal with the Giants here?
5AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:33
The Giants getting in the way of a kid's dream is just the worst.
7AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:34
He's from a single-mother household, so they'll probably cozy up to the mom and pull every trick in the book to get him to sign.

Re: #7
The Giants: "C'mon, it's about the money, right? Money money money money"

Those Kyojin scumbags (a common derogatory nickname for the Giants) are the absolute worst.

Re: #7
Word is signing with an MLB team nets him upwards of $3 million.
The Giants can't exactly hand over under-the-table cash, so there's no way they win this no matter what.

Re: #7
Dodgers: "Here's a 500 million yen signing bonus."
Oda: "Thank you so much."

Giants: "…"
10AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:34
So does this mean the Giants have no first-round pick at all this year?
Someone who actually knows the rules, explain.
13AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:35
Re: #10
They should've just picked him lower, like SoftBank did — idiots.
20AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:36
Re: #10
If he doesn't sign as things stand, yeah, that's exactly what happens.
27AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
Re: #10
Same thing happened last year — SoftBank's No. 1 pick, Rintaro, fell through too.
14AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:35
Sounds like a great kid who cares about his family. Go get 'em in the majors, I'm rooting for you — and the Giants totally deserve this.
16AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:36
For a second I misread that as "I have absolutely none" instead of "it hasn't wavered at all" (a pun on how similar the two phrases sound in Japanese).
19AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:36
Once he's in the majors he's going to have Japanese media chasing him every single day — rough.
22AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:36
Poor Mizuno, getting sent out to ambush him for a reaction — way too harsh a job to pull.
25AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
And here he was waiting for the draft results in his school uniform lol
28AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
Tried to control him with money the way they did with Yoshinobu Takahashi, and it backfired on them, huh.
29AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
Why'd he even file the "intent to go pro" declaration in the first place?
32AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
Re: #29
It's required by the rules.

Under the Japan High School Baseball Federation's regulations, any active high school player who wants to negotiate or try out with a pro team — including teams overseas — must submit a "Declaration of Intent to Go Pro" to the Japan Student Baseball Association.

Yomiuri's a bunch of idiots.
Seriously, what a shameless organization.
35AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:37
Guess baseball's finally started ignoring the domestic league too, huh.
37AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:38
Oda himself said it was 50/50, so that pretty much confirms there was a secret deal.
38AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:38
He'll get crucified for the rest of his life if he backs down now, so he absolutely cannot waver.
50AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:39
Why aren't they drafting any position players?
91AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:45
Re: #50
There probably just weren't any position players worth taking. This year's been called a weak draft class from the start.
102AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:45
Re: #50
There wasn't anyone who stood out as ready to contribute right away.
61AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:40
So I guess the Giants saw this falling through coming, and basically put in a reservation for "see you in four years"?
76AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:43
Re: #61
What actually happens in a case like that?
Would they have to draft him again later as a former minor leaguer?
66AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:41
There's no precedent for someone going straight to the majors and succeeding.
No way he just makes it work right out of the gate.
79AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:43
Re: #66
Everyone said Ohtani's two-way thing was impossible too, and he pulled it off.
"No precedent" doesn't mean "impossible."
Let him be the one who blazes the trail.
77AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:43
The fact that only the Giants picked him already tells you it's a lost cause. Oda's resolve to go to the majors is rock solid. He's the type who doesn't waver once he's decided something, so the odds are extremely high he ends up signing with the Dodgers.
90AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:45
Did TBS know about this in advance too?
A fully produced VTR package, him appearing live, a letter from his mom —
that's way too polished to be a coincidence.
110AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:46
Re: #90
They probably put the package together before his press conference announcing the US bid,
and once that happened they couldn't patch the gap, so they just aired it as-is.
100AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:45
A team with no manager — give me a break.

Re: #100
The storyline where he can't refuse once Matsui personally talks him into it.

Background and key points of the debate

To negotiate with an MLB team, a current high school player must first submit a “Declaration of Intent to Go Pro” to the Japan Student Baseball Association before the draft. Oda went through this process before entering the meeting — but under the rules, if a team can’t reach an agreement with the player it picked, that team’s first-round pick for the year is considered used up, with no option to make a replacement selection. The thread’s biggest point of contention was whether there was a “secret arrangement” between the Giants and Oda’s camp — but that remains pure speculation on 5ch, since neither Oda nor the team has said anything confirming a deal. One thing readers can easily get wrong: a forced pick doesn’t mean the player is guaranteed to sign — in the end, it’s Oda’s own decision that determines where he lands.
