The story

A scene from “Kono Toki.” (This Moment.), the behind-the-scenes documentary for the streaming service DOWNTOWN+, was released as an official YouTube Short and has become a hot topic. While talking about the smoking habits of junior comedians, Matsumoto Hitoshi let slip, “I’ve got cancer, you know,” prompting Kendo Kobayashi to laugh and fire back, “‘Had,’ you mean,” while Kukkii! chimed in with “Isn’t that old news?” — the exchange drew a big reaction. On 5ch’s Geisuto Sokuho+ (celebrity/sports news) thread, some praised how snappy the back-and-forth was, while others pointed out that the humor doesn’t come across in text, and opinion was split on whether joking about cancer is okay.

A scene from “Kono Toki.” (This Moment.), the behind-the-scenes documentary following the streaming service DOWNTOWN+ (Downtown Plus), was released as a short video on the official YouTube channel.

As Downtown’s Matsumoto Hitoshi talked about the smoking habits of junior comedians, his light-hearted exchange with TV personality Kendo Kobayashi and Yasei Bakudan’s Kukkii! struck a chord online.

It happened before the August 15 live stream of “OIU (Owarai Teikoku University),” while Matsumoto was chatting casually with Kendo Kobayashi and Kukkii!.

Re: #1
It's not even lung cancer though.

Re: #2
There are actually three types of lung cancer, and smoking only accounts for a few percent of cases among them, you know.
4AnonymousOct 22, 2026 15:55
Even coming from Matsu-chan, cancer jokes just aren't all that funny…
10AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:02
If you told him it in the past tense — 'you HAD cancer' — he'd probably be thrilled.
11AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:03
Written out it's not funny at all lol. Maybe the actual video is funny though.
12AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:04
If he's smoking in a designated smoking room, that's not a problem, right?
Are there even still places you can smoke indoors these days?
18AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:08
Re: #12
Yeah, Shinagawa Station and Chubu Centrair Airport both had them.
14AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:04
You've probably lit up without a second thought too, haven't you?
15AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:05
He used to be so cool back in the day…
Ever since he hit 40 he's gotten lamer every year.
16AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:05
He's really become a has-been. You'd never even see him anymore if people didn't transcribe stuff like this.
17AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:08
Still playing the big boss surrounded by his junior entourage, huh.
19AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:08
Wasn't there a story about Matsumoto going to Kunimasa's place right after his kid was born, trying to light up like normal, and getting told to go out on the balcony to smoke?
21AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:09
Is he actually okay with being teased about this?
I bet deep down he's thinking 'this isn't funny at all.'
23AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:11
> Kendo Kobayashi then smiled and shot back, "'Had,' you mean." Then Kukkii! piled on with "Isn't that old news?" and the three of them burst out laughing.

Sounds like they're pretty tight lol

What a heartwarming scene, cracked me up.

Living purely for attention and validation.
25AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:12
I think it's the worst when an ex-smoker quits and immediately flips to being anti-smoking.
26AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:13
Didn't he say he quit cigarettes but still smokes cigars?
27AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:13
I've gone off Ken Koba.
He used to act like he couldn't stand anything crooked.
37AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:23
Re: #27
Yeah, fair enough.
It's basically like caregiving at this point, but it still looks bad on him somehow.

Then again, Matsumoto really does seem determined to bring on big-name acts no matter the cost to their image. He already had Chidori on, so who's next — Hanamaru Daikichi or Fujii Takashi?

Kind of a 'if I'm going down, I'm taking you with me' vibe.
Says a lot about his character.
28AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:15
Wasn't Matsumoto himself a super heavy smoker? Impressive that he managed to quit.
55AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:41
Re: #28
Wada Akiko quit too.
I really don't get how their mindset works.

Re: #55
If you genuinely feel your life is on the line, you can quit both drinking and smoking.
Once your health is wrecked, you can't focus on anything and nothing's fun anymore.
29AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:15
The ones at cancer risk are the smokers themselves too — so if you hate it that much, I guess it comes down to just not inviting them.
30AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:15
Apparently when Dokumamushi Santayu kept pulling pranks on Tatekawa Danshi that could've seriously hurt him, and Danshi finally lost it, Dokumamushi just said coolly, 'That's old news, isn't it?'

Re: #30
Wasn't the punchline supposed to be, if he'd died, 'It's a joke — guess the guy who doesn't get the joke is the real fool'?

Re: #36
Wait, is Hamata a total masochist?
38AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:23
I don't think Matsumoto's cancer is 'old news' just because the surgery is over.
39AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:25
Getting backed up on a joke by Kukkii — Kendo Kobayashi's really getting old.
42AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:26
With cancer, it all comes down to whether it recurs over the next five years.
If it comes back, the survival rate drops to just a few percent — a pretty hopeless situation.
Only after five recurrence-free years can you actually say, past tense, that you 'had' cancer.
45AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:29
What's even funny about this?
Isn't this just an inside joke among themselves?
47AnonymousOct 22, 2026 16:32
Guys like Kukkii, who aren't the slightest bit funny, keep getting airtime — guess it's because he's part of the inner circle.
71AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:39
Transcribed like this it's boring enough to make your legs give out, but I wonder if the fans watching the paid stream are laughing hard enough to split their sides?
77AnonymousOct 22, 2026 17:54
Re: #71
Honestly, Matsu-chan's lines aren't even that funny when you transcribe them.
He just multiplies the humor several times over with his tone of voice, timing, and facial expressions.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The recurring question in the thread — whether Matsumoto’s cancer is “old news” — actually has a medical benchmark behind it. In cancer treatment, it’s commonly held that if there’s no recurrence within five years after surgery, the case is considered “cured”; Matsumoto Hitoshi’s case is still in that observation period. As one commenter in the thread pointed out, “if it recurs, the survival rate drops to just a few percent” — so there’s a gap between the casual phrase “old news” and the reality that the long-term outcome isn’t settled yet. Another point of debate was the link between smoking and lung cancer: lung cancer comes in several different types, and as some commenters noted, smoking is only responsible for a portion of them. In the end, the thread’s reactions split over how to reconcile joking about smoking with the seriousness of cancer itself.
