How to Avoid Catching a Cold? 5ch Thread: ‘There’s No Way I’m Losing to a Cold’

From our other sites

The story

A post asking “Is there really a way to avoid catching colds?” drew a flood of personal experiences on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. Alongside standard measures like hand-washing, gargling, wearing masks, and managing humidity with a humidifier, posters shared their own tricks: drinking cheap vitamin C (ascorbic acid) every day, using saline solution for nasal rinses, and wearing a neck warmer to bed. Some said they stopped catching colds after picking up the gargling habit during the pandemic, while others leaned into sheer willpower, insisting “it’s all luck in the end” or “I just refuse to lose.” The thread split between those who swore by scientific measures and those who swore by mindset.

Enlighten me
3AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:11
I catch one at least once a season
It's brutal
4AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:11
If you're living a normal life you shouldn't catch one
7AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
Re: #4
Living a normal life is exactly how you catch one
5AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:11
Re: #2
So that stuff actually works, huh
14AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
Re: #5
Being able to rinse out the whole mucous membrane where the virus collects is huge
33AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:15
Re: #14
Doesn't it hurt your nose?
10AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
Brush teeth, gargle, and wash hands before bed
Also air out the room
11AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
I'll be riding trains less starting next year, so maybe it'll get better
15AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
Used to catch a cold every year, but since I picked up the gargling habit during COVID I stopped getting them
17AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:12
Just don't leave the house at all
26AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
Re: #17
Now that I think about it, I never caught a cold during the COVID years
20AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:13
I'm set to graduate in 2027, my commute to school is an hour by train and my part-time job is also a train commute, maybe that's why
21AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:13
If you go somewhere like India for a month you'd probably build up some immunity
22AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:13
Mask when outside
Indoors, just keep things properly managed with a thermo-hygrometer

Humans are delicate — even getting a little too warm and sweating can give you a cold
23AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:13
Guess nobody needed the class-of-2027 life story
My head's not working right
This stuffy nose is killing me
27AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
Re: #23
Take a bath and raise your body temperature
24AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:13
Buy cheap ascorbic acid online and drink it every day
Keep your vitamin C levels saturated and you won't catch a cold even if you tried
37AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:16
Re: #24
First time hearing of ascorbic acid
I'll look it up
25AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
When I was dieting I caught colds constantly
Since I rebounded (gained the weight back) I haven't caught a single one
28AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
Since I started always washing my hands and gargling the moment I get home, I barely catch colds anymore
It's something people have said forever, but it really does matter
29AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
I do wash my hands and gargle though…
39AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:16
Re: #29
Doing it half-heartedly doesn't do anything
Go look up the proper technique
31AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
Maybe it's bad that I'm a shower person instead of a bath person
32AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:14
When I go out: wash hands, gargle with Isodine (iodine antiseptic), and do a nasal rinse
Plus vitamin C supplements — I've only caught one cold in the past decade or so

Re: #1
Keep the AC/heater running year-round

Don't sleep with the window open just because it's cool at night — and the same goes the other way around
36AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:15
Aside from the COVID and norovirus I caught from family I live with, I honestly haven't had a real cold in like 20 years and haven't been to a doctor, but I don't do anything special for it
It's just luck
48AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:18
Re: #36
Don't just exclude those, lol
43AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:18
Looking into humidifiers
Steam type seems best but my room's too small for one
51AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:19
Re: #43
Zojirushi humidifiers are easy to maintain, they're good
Ones with lots of parts or complicated designs are a pain to clean, better to avoid those
44AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:18
Re: #33
Just buy proper saline solution
Also, if you're class of 2027 you'd be a 4th-year, right? Having too much free time around then throws off your daily rhythm and makes you more prone to colds
50AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:19
Re: #44
I've got national exams right after New Year's so I'm pretty swamped
Thesis is due next month too
58AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:20
Re: #50
That exhaustion is exactly the reason
60AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:21
Re: #58
That's not it
Ever since I started university my cold frequency has clearly gone up, and it's been bothering me
This year I hadn't had one since January, so it's actually on the low side
69AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:24
Re: #60
Did you start smoking or something? After I started university, quit baseball, and took up smoking, I got more prone to colds — though it got better once I started weight training
74AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:26
Eat a ton of mandarin oranges
Vitamin C absolutely works for cold prevention
76AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:27
Re: #74
If you only take vitamin C it just gets flushed out
Vitamins need to be balanced or they don't do much
That's why multivitamins are the best value
79AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:29
I'm the type who catches colds starting in the throat, so I sleep wearing a fluffy neck warmer
Even when I feel one coming on, I'm fine when I wake up in the morning
82AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:31
Re: #79
I'm also the throat type
Gonna order a neck warmer on Amazon
84AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:34
If I just tell myself there's no way I'm losing to some cold, I genuinely don't catch one
Sheer willpower actually gets you pretty far
Because mentality and immunity are basically the same thing
87AnonymousOct 21, 2026 23:39
Re: #84
Then please stop coming into the office when you're sick

Background and key points of this discussion

Medically speaking, there’s no single foolproof method for preventing colds — combining basic measures like hand-washing, gargling, ventilation, and humidity control is generally what’s recommended. The thread’s favorite, taking large doses of vitamin C, lacks strong large-scale research showing it prevents colds, and the point raised in the thread (reply 76) — that since it’s water-soluble, any excess just gets excreted — is actually the more nutritionally sound take. Likewise, while some people find nasal rinsing painful (reply 33), the point that diluting it to roughly saline-solution strength minimizes irritation (reply 44) is a practical detail that’s easy to overlook. The relationship between immunity and mindset isn’t fully settled even among experts, so the thread’s “willpower” theory should be read as personal anecdote rather than established fact.
