Sohin Warns Sponichi: ‘You’ll Never Cover Me Again’ — 5ch: ‘Kaus’s Overindulgence’

From our other sites

The story

Sohin, of the comedy duo Shimofuri Meisei, caused a stir on 5ch after warning Sports Nippon (Sponichi, a major Japanese sports daily) on social media: “Pull the article running in tomorrow’s paper — after this, you’ll never get to cover me again.” According to Sohin himself, his tactics include excluding Sponichi alone from his press conferences and leaking information exclusively to rival outlets. The thread debated this from several angles: whether he actually has any right to force a newspaper to comply with such a demand, how it squares with freedom of the press, and — with a touch of irony — the fact that Sohin himself is usually the one dishing out criticism of others.

What people said

Wonder what this is about.
5AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:26
Somebody explain why [Yoshimoto](talent agency) dotes on this guy so much.
10AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:26
Re: #5
Kaus's overindulgence. (Note: Kaus — veteran Yoshimoto comedian rumored to act as Sohin's powerful patron.)

Re: #5
He's their top YouTube earner and does a ton of live shows too — is there even an upside to cutting him loose?
68AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:48
Re: #5
He's got Kaus backing him up.
14AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:27
Is he gonna take Ano-chan off someone's hands too? (Note: Ano-chan — internet personality/tarento rumored to be romantically linked to Sohin.)
15AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:27
Zero downside, basically.
Also, trying to infringe on freedom of the press isn't okay, is it?
22AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:29
Re: #15
Mind if we publish your home address, then?
16AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:28
Normally the agency would quietly shut this down behind the scenes — there's probably some reason he's kicking up a fuss about it himself on social media instead.
20AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:28
It's Sponichi, though, so they'll probably just cave.
21AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:29
Comedians really get the wrong idea sometimes — they're only on TV because of their agency's pull.
23AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:29
Guess it didn't work doing this quietly, so now he's doing it out in the open.
25AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:30
He doesn't actually have the right to ban coverage of himself — the most he can do is refuse interviews, no?
37AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:34
The Tigers lost because they just weren't good enough, Sohin. (Note: a jab referencing the Hanshin Tigers baseball team, apparently unrelated to the main topic.)
38AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:35
Re: #37
Does Sohin even care about baseball?
43AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:36
Re: #38
45AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:37
If they ignore this and run it anyway, isn't that seriously fold-the-paper territory for Sponichi?? Freedom of the press doesn't mean anything goes.
47AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:39
Re: #45
Well, it depends on the content. If a simple 'don't' could stop a story, no scandal would ever get published.
48AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:39
So they just can't write about Sohin anymore?
Rough.
52AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:40
Re: #48
If they can ignore this and publish anyway, doesn't that mean they can keep ignoring him and publishing whatever they want from now on too?
50AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:40
Re: #47
They don't *have* to run it, though 😅
59AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:41
Re: #50
By that logic, articles exposing politicians' corruption would disappear too.
62AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:43
Re: #59
Public officials are a different case — that'd be a violation of the National Public Service Act.
57AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:41
Doesn't seem like not covering this guy would hurt them one bit.
61AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:42
Re: #57
Then they should just pull it, lol
63AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:44
Does this guy really have that much influence?
Seems like the sports papers would be fine never running a story on him again.
76AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:52
So does that mean every time he's gone off about other people, he's been getting their permission first?
Impressive, Sohin, truly.
79AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:54
Re: #76
If someone said that to me, I'd just shut up.
82AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:55
Re: #76
'What I do is a one-man skit,' apparently.
106AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:04
Re: #76
And he uses internet articles as material constantly, too.
84AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:55
A video just dropped too
apparently he does things like leaving Sponichi out of his press conferences
89AnonymousOct 20, 2026 19:56
Re: #84
That's a reward, not a punishment, lol
109AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:06
Re: #84
He works an Ano-chan reference in even for a video like this?
121AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:14
A video just went up on YouTube.
Apparently he knows full well that an outright coverage ban isn't realistic
so instead he's deliberately holding press conferences while blacklisting Sponichi from them and leaking info only to rival outlets.
126AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:15
Re: #121
He's seriously pulling a Trump move, lol
127AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:15
Re: #121
What a lame attack, lmao
144AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:23
Re: #121
Does he seriously think there's someone out there who absolutely must know Sohin's info?
137AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:19
So that's basically an admission.
Sohin's done for.
138AnonymousOct 20, 2026 20:20
Re: #137
From the video, it doesn't look scandal-related
he's mad because leaking it early would wreck a bunch of projects he has lined up around announcing that info.

Background and key points of this discussion

Sports newspapers can refuse interview requests or ask an outlet be left off a press conference’s guest list, but they generally have no legal mechanism to actually stop a story from running. What Sohin’s side is reportedly using isn’t the “pull the article” demand itself, but operational pressure — excluding Sponichi from press conferences, or leaking information exclusively to rival outlets — a tactic commonly used by entertainers and their talent agencies to steer coverage. The thread split over whether to view this as “interference with freedom of the press” or simply “within the normal bounds of controlling one’s own media access.” Some also questioned the consistency of it, given that Sohin himself is usually known for his critical remarks about others. One point easy to miss from the headline alone: it reads as though he “ordered a publication ban,” but this is really still at the request/warning stage — he has no actual power to enforce it.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G, a “live commentary” discussion board) thread “[Breaking] Sohin warns Sponichi: ‘Pull what’s running in tomorrow’s paper — after this, you’ll never get to cover me again’.”
