Sony’s ‘Death Stranding 2’ Named for the Japan Game Awards — But Sony Skips Its Own Ceremony

The story

A thread reporting that Sony’s “Death Stranding 2” had been named in the Japan Game Awards selection lit up 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. Early on, posters jabbed at the fact that Sony itself was absent from the award ceremony, and questioned whether this was actually the top “Grand Award” or just one of the “Award for Excellence” picks. Some compared the win counts between Nintendo’s “Pokémon Bananza” and various Sony titles, and the conversation soon drifted into the circumstances behind director Hideo Kojima’s departure from Sony.

Tough luck, Nintendo fanboys ("Nishi-kun," a mocking nickname for Nintendo diehards)
3AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:28
And yet Sony itself was a no-show lol

Re: #3
The "chameleon" skipped it too (unclear who's being referenced, but implies someone who keeps changing their stance)
4AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:29
Winning an award right after cutting ties with the guy is kind of messed up…
Is that really okay?
5AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:29
Wait, why hasn't the "don't make garbage threads" guy shown up for this one?
7AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:29
Doesn't this make "Trashtation" (a mocking nickname for PlayStation) look stupid? 😭
11AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:30
Juji's (Sony exec Toshimasa Jūji) gonna blow a fuse again over wasting money on this
15AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:33
Even recreating KONAMI's playbook down to this detail… (a jab referencing Kojima's infamous falling-out with Konami)
16AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:34
Isn't this an Award for Excellence, not the Grand Award? Apparently there are 12 of them
17AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:40
From where the barriers stand, Kojima's already the enemy, isn't he (original phrasing is ambiguous)
18AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:42
Whatever logic led to abandoning Director Kojima, it's just stupid
19AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:43
Ghost of Yōtei won one too, didn't it?
Sony really is strong when it comes to award season
20AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:44
Nintendo
Pokémon Bananza
Sony
Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yōtei

Tied for now, I guess
22AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:44
The only thing anyone talked about was Pekora (VTuber Usada Pekora) showing up — never once heard whether the game was actually good or not
23AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:45
The Grand Award's gonna be either "Poko-a Pokémon" (nickname for Pokémon Bananza) or Splatoon Raiders,
or maybe Resident Evil Requiem.
But Raiders is excluded because of the eligibility period,
so it's probably going to be Resident Evil Requiem

Re: #1
No way a piece of garbage like Death Stranding 2 wins an award…

Where the hell does my Poko-a Pokémon rank, idiot
32AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:55
Everyone was bashing Death Stranding 2 so hard these past few days — so why?? 😭
34AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:56
The PlayStation fanboys ("Goki," a derogatory term short for "cockroach") who voted for Death Stranding 2 are probably regretting it now
38AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:57
PlayStation fanboy: "I don't know what face to make right now" (a well-known meme line)
40AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:58
Don't forgive SIE for cutting ties with "Kojikan" (Director Kojima) after he made a game good enough to win the Japan Game Awards
42AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:00
So where is the man who made this wonderful game, and what's he up to now?
43AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:00
Death Stranding 2 won the award, and yet he ran away from Sony
46AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:01
Calling something "sad news" when nobody even cared about it in the first place — not sure what I'm supposed to do with that
47AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:01
"We don't need you, lol, bye-bye lol"
"It's the Game Awards!"

This is basically a comedy skit
59AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:07
If Death Stranding 2 deserves the Grand Award, then Tamagotchi should've won it three times over
79AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:21
Re: #59
Oh right, didn't it lose to Tamagotchi? lol
66AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:16
Nice timing lol
73AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:18
Re: #66
If they're doing this as a joke, that's impressive. Way too much of a public humiliation
75AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:19
Here comes a Nintendo fanboy ("Nishi-kun")
80AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:21
Re: #75
I'm telling you to drop the "Nintendo" stuff, and you go and call him "Nishi-kun" — your Japanese is terrible
84AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:25
Director…

86AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:25
The silence is hilarious
89AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:27
Re: #86
It's painfully obvious who this is aimed at and what it's trying to say, lol 🤗
94AnonymousSep 15, 2026 19:32
Re: #86
Wonder how he's feeling right now

Re: #86
Even without a word, the message comes through loud and clear, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The Japan Game Awards are announced alongside the Tokyo Game Show, using a two-stage system: roughly ten titles are first named “Award for Excellence” winners, and one of those is then chosen as the single “Grand Award.” As pointed out in the thread (e.g., >>16), some posters flagged that this might be an Award for Excellence rather than the Grand Award — based on the thread’s posts alone, it can’t be confirmed whether Death Stranding 2’s honor here is the Grand Award or just one of the Excellence Award picks. Some also speculated that, due to the eligibility window, newer Splatoon titles may have been excluded from consideration — a reminder that the casual “how many wins for Nintendo vs. Sony this year” tally is being made without a clearly agreed line on which titles even qualify. Many posts also touch on Hideo Kojima’s relationship with Sony, but comments about his contract status after going independent, or his ties to Microsoft, are largely fragmentary speculation rather than confirmed fact.
