Giants Draft Shoki Oda and Seima Ikeda From Yokohama High With Picks 1 and 3 — 5ch: ‘Now That’s an Aggressive Draft’

From our other sites

The story

In the 2026 autumn draft meeting, the Yomiuri Giants used their sole first-round pick on ace pitcher Shoki Oda from Yokohama High School (Kanagawa), then followed up in the third round by taking shortstop Seima Ikeda, also from Yokohama High. Ikeda has reached Koshien four tournaments in a row, won the national title at the spring Invitational (Senbatsu) in his sophomore year, and brings a strong throwing arm to shortstop — he’s even hit 152 km/h (94 mph) off the mound as a pitcher. On the thread, opinion split over the Giants taking two players from the same school back-to-back: some called it a ‘hostage pick’ meant to pressure Oda into signing with the Giants, while others saw it as simply an honest evaluation of talent.

Seima Ikeda (3rd-year), the infielder from Yokohama High (Kanagawa) who helped his team reach the final four at this summer’s Koshien, was selected by the Giants with their third-round pick.

Ikeda has played in Koshien four tournaments running and won the national title at the spring Invitational (Senbatsu) in his sophomore year. His appeal lies in shortstop defense built on top athleticism and a strong arm, and he’s also hit 152 km/h (94 mph) as a pitcher. Giants scouting director Kuramatsu, who scouted him at this summer’s Koshien, praised him: “He stands out for his toughness in close plays, and his hitting has gotten more powerful too.”

After his team was eliminated in the semifinals at this summer’s Koshien, Ikeda made his future plans clear: “I want to show everyone a version of myself that’s changed once again, and turn pro.” He added, “In the pros, I want to become a player like Kazuo Matsui.”

Feels like it's full-on youth-development mode until Sakamoto and Tanaka actually retire for real.

Feel kinda bad for the guy, getting accused of being drafted just to keep Oda from leaving the Giants.

Re: #5
Well, they've got a track record for this kind of thing.

Classic hostage pick from the 'Garbage-Sellers' (a derisive nickname for the Giants/Yomiuri)
Same playbook as when they drafted Lee Kyung-il
That's how they landed Tetsuya Utsumi

Man, the Giants play dirty.

Re: #9
They're losing to SoftBank on financial muscle and losing to the Tigers on popularity, so the Giants — slipping from their throne as the sport's top dogs — are fighting with their backs against the wall. Guess that makes them desperate.
11AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:13
If he actually signs, this is a 'super heel' (pro-wrestling-style villain) start to a career.

Re: #11
Feels bad that people assume that about him.

If he were going to cut a secret deal anyway, he'd do it with a team willing to grant posting after just a few years. Teams like Nippon Ham or Lotte would post him without a fuss.

Oda: "If it's the Giants, I was planning to go pro in Japan anyway."

Re: #13
Would be nice if his debut game is at Koshien, the ground where he made his memories.

Feels like the old Yomiuri is back — the 'Evil Yomiuri.'
But honestly, that's fine by me.
It wouldn't be any fun otherwise.

Reminds me of back when Nakahata complained about being a 3rd-round pick, so the Giants signed Hirata and Ninomiya outside the draft just to get him to sign.
Their first-round pick that year was Shinozuka.
20AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:20
It'd be boring if they just played it safe, picking off corporate-league and college players one by one.
This is the first aggressive draft they've pulled off in a while — fun to watch.
21AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:20
Pretty wild that the Giants made a pick like this knowing full well people would call it a package deal or a secret arrangement.

(Not a compliment, to be clear.)
22AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:21
Giants scout Noriyuki Saito is a Yokohama High alum — he must've pushed hard for this one.
23AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:21
New manager's gonna be Kazushige Nagashima, and the Giants dynasty legend begins. (A joke — he's the son of legendary Giants figure Shigeo Nagashima.)
24AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:21
Ikeda's got real strength, and his defense is sharp too.
26AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:22
Think they've got the moat filled in already, 'Phony Giants' (a derisive pun on 巨人/Giants)? Manager Matsui to close the deal, huh. Dirty tactics — typical of the 'eternally filthy' team (a jab twisting Nagashima's famous 'the Giants are eternal' line).
27AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:22
Just how much do the Giants love Yokohama High, lol
28AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:23
If they ever agree to a posting system, maybe there's a chance for Oda too down the line?
30AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:24
Lol, that's some classic Giants pettiness — haven't seen it in a while.
34AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:25
If it's a package deal, does that mean Ikeda himself wasn't actually worth a 3rd-round pick?
35AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:29
If they'd at least try to win him over with words, like Kuriyama did with Ohtani, I could respect it.
This just looks like a fixed match…
42AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:33
He'll probably pretend to refuse signing with the Giants for about a week.
60AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:52
Re: #42
You can't seriously weigh the Dodgers against the Giants.
If the Dodgers don't come calling, he'll probably end up with the Giants.
52AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:46
Looks like Yokohama High's manager is going to end up being the one persuading Oda.

Re: #52
Yokohama High manager Hiroaki Murata, on Giants first-round pick Shoki Oda:
"With Oda, we had talked about the possibility of a forceful pick happening. I didn't want it to catch us off guard, so I made sure we were prepared for it. I just spoke with him, and his resolve hasn't changed at all. I want to support the path he's decided on."

I figured some team would break the unwritten rule on Oda, but it's shocking that SoftBank passed on him.
I thought the Hawks don't take early picks that seriously, so I expected them to take a flier on him just for fun.
63AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:54
Re: #55
SoftBank already learned their lesson with Rintaro last year.
Getting stood up by your own first-round pick is just embarrassing.
66AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:57
Re: #55
They do take it seriously, you know.
Their lottery luck is just garbage, so they haven't landed the guys they actually wanted.
The only lottery pick they've won since Seigi Tanaka was Maeda.
Before that, their luck was so bad they couldn't even win the backup-to-the-backup lottery.
62AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:54
Getting picked by the Giants these days just doesn't carry much value anymore.
81AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:14
Re: #62
If you're putting up results, you'd rather be with a team that'll hand you a ticket to the majors within your first five years as a high-school draftee.
64AnonymousOct 22, 2026 18:55
Why didn't the Tigers go for Watanabe?
They could've easily gotten Sakakibara as a fallback pick anyway.
73AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:06
Re: #64
Probably because Fushimi's return was already locked in.
If so, they can get by for another year or two.
They might've also judged that finding the next Kinmoto was the more urgent problem.
They struggled hard this year when he went down with an injury.
78AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:11
That catcher who got drafted alongside Utsumi just to get Utsumi to sign got cut pretty quickly, right?
79AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:14
Re: #78
He was a 6th-round pick who lasted 6 years, so he actually hung around a while.
Though he barely had any first-team experience.
84AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:15
Ikeda's arm is seriously something else.
87AnonymousOct 22, 2026 19:19
Re: #84
His height is the one drawback.
But like it says, his defense doesn't even need polishing — it's already ridiculously good.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

There’s historical precedent for a team picking players from the same school in both the first and third rounds, and the thread brought up the case of the Giants drafting Lee Kyung-il in order to land Tetsuya Utsumi, as well as the old story about Kiyoshi Nakahata’s signing. That said, the ‘hostage pick’ and ‘package deal’ theories are purely fan speculation — the Giants have never officially admitted to trying to sway Oda’s decision, and Yokohama High manager Hiroaki Murata has stated that Oda’s resolve hasn’t wavered. At the same time, Ikeda has real credentials on his own merits: strong shortstop defense, a powerful arm, and a fastball that’s topped out at 152 km/h (94 mph) as a pitcher — enough to justify the pick on talent alone. Where the thread splits is on whether to weight this as ‘strategy’ or ‘honest scouting,’ and it’s worth noting that neither view is based on any official team statement.
