  • Yuji Oda Chokes Up Over First ‘Bayside Shakedown’ Film in 14 Years: ‘I’m Now the Same Age Ikariya-san Was as Wakui’

The online completion event for the film “Bayside Shakedown N.E.W.: Dash Through the Metropolis” (opening September 18) was held in an online-only format on September 6 after the in-person venue event was canceled due to severe weather. Lead actor Yuji Oda spoke about how it felt to return to set now that he’s the same age Chosuke Ikariya, who has since passed away, was when he played the character Wakui — and revealed it brought tears to his eyes. On 5ch, the topic sparked a flurry of reactions touching on the relationships within the comedy group The Drifters and Ikariya, the box-office outlook for the series, and the current state of Fuji TV.

People always bring up how bad relations were within The Drifters, but really the only friction was Shimura vs. Ikariya, Kato vs. Ikariya, Takagi vs. Ikariya, Nakamoto vs. Ikariya, and Arai vs. Ikariya — overall they actually got along fine.

So Ikariya was the root cause of it all lol

    Re: #10
It's simple — Shimura and Ikariya had a falling out, and the group just split into Kato on Shimura's side versus Takagi and Nakamoto on Ikariya's side.
Kato didn't dislike Ikariya enough to cut ties with him, but he respected Shimura and let him do things his own way.

No idea how Shimura felt about Ikariya, but before he passed away, Ikariya secretly paid out of his own pocket to go see one of Shimura's stage shows, so he clearly still cared.
Apparently he'd also happily bring up Shimura in conversations with his son.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Bayside Shakedown” is one of Japan’s most iconic film franchises — the first theatrical film in 1998 grossed roughly 10.1 billion yen, and the 2003 sequel brought in about 17.3 billion yen — and this latest release marks the first new mainline entry in 14 years. Thread opinions were split on box-office prospects, with some optimistic based on the series’ track record and others more skeptical given the underwhelming performance of recent spinoff films. As for Chosuke Ikariya, a long-running rumor holds that The Drifters were plagued by internal discord, but some posters testified that the real friction was mainly between Ikariya and Ken Shimura rather than bad blood across the whole group — worth noting the gap between the public image and firsthand accounts.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread ‘[Entertainment] Yuji Oda on “Bayside Shakedown”: First New Film in 14 Years, “It Brought Tears…” — On Ikariya-san: “I’ve Come Back at About the Same Age as Wakui”.’

  • Giants shut out Carp 4-0, sweep three-game series — 5ch: ‘Even a pitcher who couldn’t cut it in MLB can throw an easy shutout in Japan’

In Central League play on September 6, the Yomiuri Giants beat the Hiroshima Carp 4-0, completing a three-game sweep. Starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara threw a complete-game shutout on just four hits, while Yuta Izumiguchi’s three-run homer — his 7th of the season — proved to be the decisive blow. On 5ch, reactions ranged widely: comparisons of Ogasawara’s pitching tempo now versus his days with the Chunichi Dragons, debate over the gap between NPB and MLB sparked by a pitcher who flopped in the majors throwing a shutout, skepticism about the official attendance figures, and speculation about how the pennant race will play out.

Might actually happen — Giants taking the pennant for real.

Depends on the next series against the Dragons, though.

    Background and talking points

Shinnosuke Ogasawara made his name as a homegrown pitcher for the Chunichi Dragons before joining the Giants this season, and the thread was full of comparisons between his pitching form and tempo before and after the move. A ranking of hit-by-pitch totals was also cited — an annual tally of how many batters each team’s pitching staff has hit, a number baseball fans often bring up as a measure of wildness or command. The Central League pennant race remains a tight scramble even into September, so this three-game series drew extra attention for what it might signal about the Climax Series matchups. Meanwhile, some posts questioned whether the officially announced attendance figures matched what fans felt they saw in the stands, though that has not been verified as of this writing. Note that the original thread also contained discriminatory posts targeting specific regions and ethnicities, which have been excluded from this summary.

  • Beat Takeshi Questions Riverside BBQ Nuisance Behavior — Says ‘Why Copy the West Wholesale?’

On the September 6 broadcast of “Beat Takeshi’s TV Tackle,” Beat Takeshi shared his opinion on nuisance behavior surrounding riverside barbecues. The show covered how Kanuma City in Tochigi Prefecture had enacted an ordinance banning open-flame cooking and noise in certain areas, prompting Takeshi to ask, “Why do we just accept this total rip-off of the West as-is?” The remark drew a wide range of reactions on 5ch, from arguments that the real issue isn’t cultural importation but the manners of a few users, to pushback on the assumption that barbecue originated in the West when Japan has had its own version for ages, to debates over whether comparing it to tea ceremony or flower arranging even makes sense.

Beat Takeshi questions riverside barbecues plagued by nuisance behavior: “Why do we just accept this total rip-off of the West as-is?”

TV personality Beat Takeshi appeared on the September 6 broadcast of TV Asahi’s “Beat Takeshi’s TV Tackle” (Sundays at noon), where he shared his personal views on nuisance behavior in the great outdoors.

That day’s episode covered how, as more people enjoy barbecuing on riverbanks, illegal dumping of trash into rivers and disruptive noise have become rampant — leading Kanuma City in Tochigi Prefecture to enact an ordinance banning open-flame cooking, including barbecues, and noise that disturbs the surrounding area in certain parts of the city.

If that were really the only reason, parkour would be way bigger in Japan, and so would RIZIN and power slapping (guessing at the reference here)

Actually, what kind of mindset finds barbecue "cool" in the first place??

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The ordinance enacted by Kanuma City in Tochigi Prefecture bans open-flame cooking and noisy behavior in certain riverbank areas, driven by a rise in complaints about illegally dumped trash and noise. It’s worth noting that barbecue itself existed in Japan even before the Showa era, and similar outdoor-cooking traditions exist worldwide — so Takeshi’s “total rip-off of the West” line reads less like a historical claim than his own characteristic turn of phrase. Within the thread, opinions split between those who saw “cultural importation” itself as the problem and those who blamed the behavior of “a poorly-mannered minority of users” — with the latter camp often sliding into baseless generalizations about specific nationalities. This article excludes that kind of unsubstantiated commentary. • What food is overrated? 5ch says: “It’s just raw fish on rice”

A thread on 5ch asking users to name the “most overrated food, honestly” took off, with sushi sparking the biggest debate. Nominations ranged widely, including sushi (“it’s just raw fish on rice”), Jiro-style ramen, and Turkish cuisine (“supposedly one of the world’s three great cuisines, but all anyone actually knows is kebab and ice cream”). On sushi, opinions split hard between those calling it “mass-produced fast food” and those defending it as “an art form that brings together diverse ingredients into one shape,” with the debate even reaching back to its Edo-period origins. Commenters also raised doubts about other supposedly high-end foods, including Shine Muscat grapes, Kyoto cuisine, and eel.

    Background and Key Points

Nigiri sushi is said to have spread during the Edo period as a quick, casual meal sold from street stalls — a very different origin from today’s high-end sushi restaurant culture. The thread reflected that divide, with opinions split right down the middle between “it started as cheap fast food” and appreciation for the technique behind nigiri and its combinations of ingredients. Some pointed out that in America, sushi has become established as a health food, underscoring how the same dish can be valued completely differently depending on the country and era. Shine Muscat grapes are a branded variety marketed on their high sugar content, but some commenters questioned the very obsession with sweetness itself — an angle that’s easy to overlook, since it puts the underlying assumption that “expensive equals delicious” up for debate. The observation that Turkish cuisine, despite being called one of the world’s three great cuisines, is known to most people only through kebab and ice cream is also an interesting example of the gap between reputation and actual familiarity.

A column published in Nikkan Gendai titled “Is Shohei Ohtani the Avatar Senior Men Pin Their Dreams On?” became a hot topic on 5ch’s Geisports Sokuho+ board. The piece argues that senior men project their unfulfilled dreams and lost youth onto Ohtani, watching a kind of “proxy war” play out in front of the TV. Reactions in the thread split between agreement — “Big data already shows it’s mostly older guys who are into Ohtani” — and pushback — “How is this even analysis?” One poster shared a personal story about their father in his 70s, who became obsessed with Dodgers games after losing his mobility, keeping the thread from being pure mockery.

For team sports like soccer or basketball, where equal numbers from both sides mix together on the pitch at the same time, you need to have actually played the sport — or watched a ton of matches — while young, when your brain is still flexible. Otherwise you can't process the situation fast enough to understand what's happening or why a certain play was made.
It's extremely hard to pick that up once you're middle-aged or older.

Japan's current 50-and-up crowd didn't grow up in that environment, so when they watch those sports they simply don't understand what's going on — and as a result, they never get emotionally invested in the players either.

As you get older, you end up spending a huge chunk of your daily life living inside memories and reminiscence.
That's why piling up plenty of real-life experiences and memories while you're young leads to a mentally rich old age.
If you settle for everything filtered through the internet and other media instead, you end up a shallow old man with an empty, hollow retirement.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

While Shohei Ohtani’s fanbase is generally considered broad across both age and gender, the article takes a narrower angle, zeroing in on “senior men” and the idea of self-projection. Several thread posters pointed out that “big data already shows the core audience skews elderly,” and it’s become a widely shared premise in the thread that there’s a generational gap between the audience watching baseball broadcasts on TV and the audience reacting on social media and online. At the same time, the article’s author, Reiko Wakatsuki, has a track record of writing columns for Nikkan Gendai that are critical of older men, and part of the pushback in the thread is aimed less at the article’s actual content and more at a “oh, this writer again” reaction. Even though it looks like an emotional clash, the real point of contention boils down to a single question — how to interpret viewership data skewing older — rather than a simple generational shouting match.

  • Queen Tribute Act ‘Joou-sama’ (‘Her Majesty’), Famous for Literal Japanese Lyrics, Returns After 30 Years — 5ch: ‘We Lost It at “Yokozuna”‘

Joou-sama (“Her Majesty”), the alter-ego project by Bakufu Slump guitarist Pappara Kawai that sings word-for-word Japanese translations of Queen’s classic hits, marks its 30th debut anniversary with a full-fledged new album, ‘SHIN Joou-sama Monogatari,’ out September 14. The Japanese lyrics are again handled by fellow Bakufu Slump member Sanplaza Nakano-kun, and this time a joint live show with ‘Ousama’ (“His Majesty”) is also planned. The thread lit up with talk of the group’s relationship with Ousama — known for its own literal covers of Western songs — a debate over whether the syllable count of the English lyrics can really match the length of the Japanese translations, and hidden trivia buried in the lyrics.

Joou-sama, the Japanese-literal-translation rock project led by Bakufu Slump guitarist Pappara Kawai, marks its 30th debut anniversary with the release of a new album, ‘SHIN Joou-sama Monogatari,’ on September 14. This is the first full-scale new release under the Joou-sama name in 30 years.

Joou-sama debuted in 1996. It’s an offbeat project in which Bakufu Slump’s Sanplaza Nakano-kun translates Queen’s classic songs literally into Japanese and Pappara Kawai belts them out — the group put out hits like ‘Joou-sama Monogatari.’

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Joou-sama debuted in 1996 as a novelty unit in which Sanplaza Nakano-kun translates Queen songs literally into Japanese and Pappara Kawai sings them. It’s a separate act from the earlier, similarly literal-translation cover group ‘Ousama’ (which covers Western music in general), and the thread repeatedly saw the two get mixed up or compared. What made news this time was the joint live show between the two acts and the fact that this is Joou-sama’s first full-scale new release in 30 years. Where the thread split was over whether the syllable count of the English lyrics can really match the length of the Japanese translations, with the debate over how to translate ‘I Was Born To Love You’ escalating into an exchange of actual syllable counts. Note that the wordplay around ‘bicycle’ and similar references mentioned in the replies comes from Queen’s original lyrics themselves, not something Joou-sama added.

Still, I can't make plans without a confirmed schedule

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Rosy Chronicle is a group under the Hello! Project umbrella. According to one post in the thread (#46), they released their 1st single in winter 2025 and have followed up with new songs roughly every six months to a year since, making this 4th single a fall 2026 release. The discussion centers on two main points. The first is bewilderment over putting the word “great misfortune” (daikyo) in the title (#9, #11), which drew some self-deprecating defense along the lines of “well, they’re the ‘great misfortune’ group, so at least they’re self-aware” (#16). The second is concern over sales, crystallized in comments like “hope they can hold the line at 50,000 copies” (#40), reflecting worries (#48, #56) that fans may be drifting toward Morning Musume’s newly added members. November 4 is also a fiercely contested release date, with several other groups dropping singles the same day (#34), and repeated questions came up about whether release events can realistically fit around the group’s tour schedule — painting a picture of on-the-ground fan reaction that goes well beyond a simple new-single announcement.

  • Yuta Misaki on Komeo’s Food Poisoning Scandal: ‘Saying He Should Quit Food Service Entirely Goes Too Far’

Businessman Yuta Misaki (known as the “Aojiru Prince”) posted on X on September 6, 2026 about chef Komeo, who caused a mass food poisoning outbreak, saying that while “getting to the bottom of the cause and preventing a recurrence is absolutely necessary,” he thinks “saying he should quit the restaurant business entirely, or never make a comeback, goes too far.” Komeo is alleged to have caused a mass food poisoning incident over the “chilled crab ramen” he served at the “Azabu-Juban Suzumi Matsuri” (a summer festival) held on August 22–23. On the 5channel “Geinou/Sports News+” board, opinions were split: some voiced understanding, saying “food poisoning can happen anywhere,” while others were harsher, arguing “given the scale of the damage, continuing is too lenient” and “based on how he’s handled the aftermath, a comeback isn’t appropriate.”

Businessman Yuta Misaki updated X (formerly Twitter) on the 6th, addressing the mass food poisoning scandal surrounding the “chilled crab ramen” served by chef Komeo at the “Azabu-Juban Suzumi Matsuri” festival (August 22–23).

Misaki pointed out that a thorough investigation is needed, saying, “The sheer scale of harm caused by Komeo’s food poisoning incident is genuinely serious. It’s no joking matter, and I think a thorough investigation into the cause and measures to prevent it happening again are absolutely necessary.” He then offered his own view that quitting isn’t necessarily required, adding, “But I think saying he should quit the restaurant business entirely, or never make a comeback, goes too far.”

He argued the real issue lies in what happens next. “The fact that he caused this incident will never go away as long as he lives. But I don’t want us to be a society that brands someone who genuinely reflects and faces up to their mistake with a permanent stigma of failure. What matters most, I think, is how you face things after you’ve failed,” he emphasized.

    23AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:23
Nah, normally a shop that causes food poisoning just goes under.
Any restaurant that gets flagged by the health department is done for.
That's been the case for 50 years.
Anyone handling food has a corresponding level of responsibility.
Makes you wonder if he's not taking this seriously.
    25AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:23

    44AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:29

He'll probably stop reusing crab that went unused the day before, at least.
    45AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:29
If he still wants to work in food service, he should properly apologize and compensate this incident's victims, then go train for a few years at some legitimate restaurant to learn the basics of the trade.
If he won't do that, all I can say is: never work in food service again.

Things might get dicey starting tomorrow for a while.
With heavy rain, sewage backs up, you know.
A lot of restaurant kitchens have drains connected straight to the sewer,

This is straight-up food terrorism on the level of the arsenic curry case (a notorious 1998 mass poisoning incident in Japan).

    50AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:32

People in food service are always fighting while staying on guard.
    60AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:35
People's grasp of how serious food poisoning is is way too soft.
Worst case, people die. Some end up in a vegetative state.
Some people can't even fully clear it and end up suffering for over ten years. He should count himself lucky no one was left disabled or dead, and just walk away.

It'd be great if he could focus purely on that, but
he's got to turn a profit too,

    so it's not easy.
It's true this can happen anywhere, though.
If only people would just ask for safe and tasty.
    89AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:44

    99AnonymousSep 6, 2026 22:49
    Re: #89
    A record.
    How fleeting.

    Background and Talking Points

Regarding the mass food poisoning at the Azabu-Juban Suzumi Matsuri, the thread also mentions that while the kappo restaurant that ran the food stall was hit with a business suspension order, Komeo’s own restaurant reportedly continued operating as usual — a detail readers can easily miss, since it means people are arguing about the merits of a ‘comeback’ from different starting assumptions. Misaki’s post acknowledged the seriousness of the incident while raising the question of rehabilitation and second chances, framed as not wanting a society that uniformly shuts out those who genuinely reflect and face their mistakes. The thread itself split between a defense holding that ‘food poisoning isn’t rare in this industry’ and criticism arguing that ‘given the scale of the health damage, rebuilding trust won’t be easy, and if he continues he should relearn the basics from scratch.’ It’s also worth noting that the original article doesn’t confirm whether the food poisoning caused any deaths or lasting aftereffects — the references in the thread to people ‘dying’ or being ‘left disabled’ point to the general risks of food poisoning, not to the actual outcomes of this particular case.

*This article was compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Yuta Misaki: ‘Saying Komeo Should Never Work in Food Service or Make a Comeback Goes Too Far’ Regarding the Food Poisoning Scandal — ‘I Hope He Makes a Proper Comeback Someday’.”

  • VTuber Comment Sections Flooded with ‘Just Nodding Along’ Replies — 5ch Asks: ‘Have They Lost Their Sense of Self?’

On 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G), a trend caught attention where VTuber livestream comment sections were flooded with posts that were nothing but acknowledgments like “un un” (uh-huh) and “hou hou” (I see, I see). The backdrop is that many streams ban spoilers, preemptive comments, and lecturing, making it hard for viewers to post anything beyond a safe, noncommittal nod. Opinions in the thread were split: some viewers enjoyed it, likening it to chatting casually with a female friend, while critics compared the psychology of deliberately typing out meaningless words to a loss of one’s sense of self.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Many VTuber livestreams enforce comment-section rules banning “spoilers,” “hinting,” and “lecturing,” leaving viewers unable to engage with the actual content and forcing them to fall back on harmless acknowledgments. The thread touched on this point too, with some arguing it’s less about laziness and more a constraint imposed by streaming culture itself. That’s where opinions diverged: some viewers embraced the acknowledgments, saying they felt like casually chatting with a female friend, while others questioned the psychology behind it, wondering whether bothering to send meaningless words amounted to a loss of self. Some also argued that so-called “instruction otaku” who backseat-comment on stream content are far more harmful, taking an actively defensive stance toward the acknowledgment-only posters. A few posts touched on liking or disliking specific streamers, but portions amounting to personal attacks have been omitted from this article.

  • Buzzy Juice=Juice’s sparse crowd photos from Lucky Fes spark reactions

The audience turnout at the outdoor event “Lucky Fes,” where Juice=Juice performed, became a hot topic on 5ch after being buzzed about on social media. Photos posted online showed sparse seating stretching back through the venue, prompting a wave of comments comparing it unfavorably to fellow Hello! Project group ANGERME (“ANGERME drew a bigger crowd”). Meanwhile, some pointed out that photos taken from a low angle made the crowd look bigger, while shots from the stage made it look empty, splitting opinion on how packed the venue really was.

The point of contention in the thread was simple: was the crowd really that sparse? The posted photos suggested that shots taken from a low camera angle made the audience look larger, while angles shot from the stage made the seating area look thin. It’s worth noting that the impression of crowd size can shift dramatically depending on the camera angle at any outdoor event, so it’s premature to draw firm conclusions about actual attendance from a single photo circulating on social media. It’s also worth reading this thread with the awareness that it’s colored by fan rivalry between Hello! Project groups — Juice=Juice versus ANGERME — and that no official attendance figures were cited.
