  • Psychiatrist Declares Saving Money the Priciest Hobby of All — 5ch Fires Back: ‘It’s Only a Hobby Because We Have No Other Hobbies’

Psychiatrist Hideki Wada, writing for Diamond Online, argued that “the most expensive hobby of all is saving money.” Unlike gambling or travel, he says, simply hoarding cash does nothing to enrich your life — a claim that split opinion on 5ch. Some agreed that “there’s no point saving if you never spend it,” while others pushed back: “even if you’re the richest person alive when you die, that’s fine — your kids can just inherit it,” and “watching my bankbook balance climb is fun in itself.” The thread exposed just how differently people view money and happiness.

Say “expensive hobby” and most people picture gambling, overseas trips, or art collecting. But psychiatrist Hideki Wada points out that the priciest hobby of all is actually “saving money.” Why does endlessly hoarding cash without ever spending it end up hollowing out your life? It’s worth rethinking your relationship with money as you get older.

And that's exactly why so many people end up richest the day they die. Doesn't matter how much you saved if you never spent it.

Exactly this. You can just leave it to your kids in the end — I don't get this psychiatrist's argument at all.

Saving just means putting your money into yen, a currency that keeps losing value to inflation. Only an idiot would do that.
    51AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:01
    Re: #40
Even if it loses some value, that beats having barely any savings at all. I hold a decent chunk of safe government bonds plus a bit of stock. The advantage of cash savings is the flexibility.
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:59
Wada probably has no idea how painful it is to have no money. Someone who's never struggled financially just can't grasp how much gratitude and peace of mind having money actually brings.
    65AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:03
    Re: #46
Other psychiatrists have said the same thing. Sure, if you're struggling to the point of real hardship, you lose peace of mind — but past a certain point, saving more doesn't proportionally boost your sense of security, so it stops mattering.

Then again, if having more money truly bought more peace of mind, [comedian] Okamura wouldn't have ended up depressed.

True that 🦀 (a pun on "tashikani"/"indeed" — "kani" means crab, hence the emoji)
There's a single guy in his 40s still living with his parents at my job who blows money on trips, motorcycles, whatever — but he looks like he's having a blast. He keeps hitting on the new female hires, creeps them out, gets an earful from the boss, and still never quits. I guess spending money really does relieve stress.

But the single guy at my job who still lives with his parents and only ever talks about savings and investments creeps everyone out too. Save it or spend it, a grown man still living with mom and dad has it rough either way.

I don't have 100 million, but I retired early and this is basically me. My kei car is a 4WD kei — I live somewhere snowy, so it's more than enough. I've seen big heavy SUVs stuck in ditches plenty of times, while my little kei 4WD just cruises right on past them home lol

    106AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:11
Not talking about this guy specifically, but the concept of "developmental disorders," coined by people in psychiatry, is making people miserable.

So many people suffer because a family member — a kid — got diagnosed as "hattasho" (slang for developmental disorder). They're not actually disabled, just ordinary people, but this bizarre diagnosing — or really, labeling — has run rampant.
    115AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:13
    Re: #106
Suffering because of the diagnosis? If someone's bad enough to actually get diagnosed, the people around them were already suffering long before that. You're just blaming the diagnosis instead of accepting reality.

I'm a guy in my 50s at the bottom of the ladder — gross pay ¥180,000/month, take-home under ¥150,000 — but saving and pinching pennies is my hobby. My only "eating out" is a jumbo beef bowl twice a year when the small bonus comes in. Grinning at my bankbook now that it's finally hit ¥2 million is how I spend my downtime. Watching it climb a few tens of thousands of yen a month is the best. It took a long road to reach ¥2 million, but apparently the median savings for someone in their 50s is only ¥1.2 million — so I'm happy to finally be on the winning side.

Paradoxically, everyone's a little "hattasho" (slang for developmental disorder). Even people who look normal, average, or unremarkable have one or two quirks.

As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, that's just personality. The whole concept of "hattasho" is what's making society worse.

Japan puts a lot of pressure on people to "be normal," but the real question is: what even is "normal"? Japan is a country where everyone's scared of this invisible thing called "normal."

Anyway, people who go around calling others "developmentally disordered" or "borderline intelligence" as an insult are usually just projecting their own complex about it onto someone else.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hideki Wada is a psychiatrist known for his work on geriatric psychiatry and lifestyle advice, and his view that “money only means something if you spend it” is a stance he’s repeated throughout his own books. The thread split largely over whether saving is seen as an “end in itself” or a “means to an end” — some people genuinely enjoy the act of saving, while others see unspent savings as pointless. The counterargument that “you can leave it to your kids and grandkids eventually” reframes saving not just as personal spending but as a form of passing on wealth — a point raised in the thread that doesn’t appear in the original article. As for the link between financial security and happiness, some research suggests that once you’re above a baseline of financial hardship, savings amount and life satisfaction don’t necessarily keep rising together — which echoes the thread’s view that “having ‘some amount’ is enough.”

  • Tokyo Full-Time Employees Average ¥8.61 Million a Year — ‘The Median Tells a Very Different Story’

A thread titled “Apparently the average annual salary for male full-time employees in Tokyo is ¥8.61 million” popped up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live Anything) board. This kind of average-salary data goes viral again and again, and this time was no exception — commenters quickly pushed back with statistical nitpicks like “If the average is ¥8.61 million, the median has to be way lower” and “That doesn’t match doda’s numbers at all.” The conversation soon spiraled into a salary-bragging showdown of dubious veracity: one poster claimed to come from a landowning family with real estate held under multiple names, another claimed to be a freelancer pulling in ¥60 million a year, and even the thread’s original poster admitted to earning ¥12 million — with no way to verify any of it.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Average income” figures tend to get pulled upward by a small number of high earners, and it’s usually the median that better reflects what “most people” actually feel their income is like. Even in private job-change services and official government statistics, it’s common to see gaps of several hundred thousand to a million yen between the average and median for the same population — so the thread’s pushback that “¥8.61 million is an average, not a median” is grounded in real statistical behavior. That said, claims like coming from a landowning family or earning ¥60 million a year are nothing more than anonymous self-reports, and nothing in the thread backs them up. These exchanges should be read with the grain of salt reserved for 5ch’s trademark “income flexing,” and the thread never even specifies which survey or year the ¥8.61 million figure actually comes from.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Even after the original Touch manga finished its run, TV specials and other sequel footage continued to be made, including an installment that aired on Friday Roadshow. However, since these weren’t handled directly by Mitsuru Adachi but were original storylines created by the anime staff using the existing characters, fans are often split on whether they should count as an official continuation. The storyline involving Minami and Nitta’s relationship that came up in the thread also comes from this sequel anime and doesn’t exist in the manga itself. Similar situations exist with other popular baseball and sports manga — Slam Dunk, for instance, has had unofficial sequels made overseas — so the question of how far to treat sequel footage as “official canon” isn’t unique to Touch. The thread also pointed out that the source article itself isn’t really new information, but rather a rehash summarizing the content of existing sequel footage.

  • Why Is ‘Bakemonogatari’ a Harem Anime Classic? 5ch Weighs In: ‘I Still Don’t Get Why Hanekawa Lost’

On 5ch’s live-commentary board “Nandemo Jikkyo G,” a thread looking back at the 2009 anime “Bakemonogatari” took off. Based on Nisio Isin’s novels and produced by SHAFT, the series — centered on protagonist Araragi’s relationships with multiple heroines — is said to have rivaled “Haruhi” in popularity, and the thread drew plenty of nostalgic enthusiasm for that era. The conversation really took off around why Tsubasa Hanekawa, long seen as the frontrunner, ultimately wasn’t chosen, with posters speculating it came down to the precariousness of her relationships and her status as a vampire’s thrall. Other topics ranged widely too, covering the ending themes that change with each heroine’s arc, the manga adaptation’s art, and how confusing the series’ viewing order is.

A woman who stabs people with a weapon at the drop of a hat could actually die unless she's with the protagonist — a vampire's thrall with regenerative powers — so she can't be paired off with anyone else. Plus she's basically distrustful of any man who isn't him.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Bakemonogatari” is an anime based on Nisio Isin’s “Monogatari” novel series, which is known for the fact that its publication and broadcast order doesn’t match the in-story chronology. As noted in the thread, the fact that the prequel “Kizumonogatari” comes after “Nisemonogatari” is a frequent point of confusion, which is why the series is often compared to “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,” which had a similarly non-chronological structure. The tradition of changing the ending theme for each heroine’s story arc, performed by that character’s own voice actress, has also become a series staple. Additionally, only some entries in the series have been adapted into manga; “Kizumonogatari,” mentioned in the thread, has an anime adaptation but has not yet been published as a manga. The discussion in the thread mainly consists of commentary on the characters’ relationships and dialogue, with real people mentioned only to the extent of voice actors’ names coming up.

  • Why Hasn’t ‘Usogui’ Been Made into an Anime? 5ch: ‘The Air Poker Arc Alone Is Genuinely the Greatest of All Time’

A thread went up on a 5ch livestream-commentary board asking why Usogui, widely seen as one of the defining works of gambling manga, still hasn’t gotten a TV anime adaptation. While other titles in the same genre — Kakegurui, Liar Game, Junket Bank — have been adapted one after another, posters threw out all sorts of theories for the ‘neglect’: the author’s personality, the sheer complexity of the game setups, the live-action film’s poor box office, and more. At the same time, the thread lit up with praise for ‘Air Poker,’ widely regarded as the series’ single greatest showdown, along with comparisons to other gambling manga.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:20
Kakegurui, Liar Game, and Junket Bank all got anime adaptations, so why the hell has this one been left in limbo forever?
    3AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:21
Liar Game sat on the shelf for years too, so quit making that shocked face.
    4AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:21
    It's the author, honestly…

Also, there's just a ton of 'Wait, is that Izanami?!'-style over-the-top staging that gets needlessly heavy-handed, and the violent parts aren't even that fun.

    9AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:22

    11AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:22

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Usogui is a gambling manga by Shohei Manabe that even received a live-action film adaptation in 2014. The titles brought up for comparison in the thread — Kakegurui, Liar Game, and Junket Bank — have all already gotten TV anime adaptations, and the fact that Usogui holds comparable name recognition yet has gone unadapted for so many years is a recurring topic on 5ch. Opinions in the thread split mainly into two camps: one raised a technical concern about how much of the series’ intricate mind games and psychological nuance could actually be conveyed given the constraints of animation and episode length; the other speculated that the live-action film’s box-office performance may be influencing decisions about further media adaptations. Neither has been confirmed by any official source — both remain purely fan speculation, which readers should keep in mind. It’s also worth noting that specific gambling sequences like ‘Air Poker’ are held in very high regard, showing that the lack of an anime doesn’t equate to a poor reputation for the work itself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyou G) thread “Usogui, Supposedly the Greatest Gambling Manga Ever.”

  • “Dental Checkups for All Citizens”: Government to Subsidize Saliva Tests — 5ch: “There Are More Dentists Than Convenience Stores”

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare plans to begin subsidizing costs for municipalities that run simplified saliva tests to screen for periodontal (gum) disease, starting in fiscal year 2027. The goal is to let anyone who wants one get tested every year, raising the share of people who’ve had a dental checkup within the past year to 95% by fiscal 2035. The ministry’s fiscal 2027 budget request includes 9.3 billion yen for related costs. As of 2024, 40% of people had not had a dental checkup in the past year. On 5ch, some welcomed the move, citing links between periodontal disease and heart attacks or Alzheimer’s, while the thread also branched into gripes about the sheer number of dental clinics and how healthcare spending gets allocated, debates over fluoridating tap water, and even how to properly use an electric toothbrush — a mix of support, skepticism, and tangents.

Starting in fiscal year 2027, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare will subsidize the costs municipalities need to run simplified saliva tests for periodontal disease, making it possible for anyone who wants one to get tested every year. The aim is to raise the share of people who’ve had a dental checkup within the past year to 95% by fiscal 2035.

In its fiscal 2027 budget request, the ministry earmarked 9.3 billion yen to move the “Dental Checkups for All Citizens” initiative forward, positioning it as a key measure in its “proactive preventive medicine” push to extend healthy life expectancy. As of 2024, 40% of people had not had a dental checkup within the past year.

The ministry is considering formally establishing the simplified test as a program under the Health Promotion Act starting in fiscal 2028. It also plans to shorten the interval for periodontal disease checkups — where dentists examine teeth and surrounding tissue at dental clinics — from every ten years to every five.

Having more dentists than convenience stores is basically criminal at this point. One or two per prefecture would be plenty. There are so many dentists that a massive amount of taxpayer money gets dumped into them. If the number of dentists dropped to a hundredth of what it is now, taxes would go down and everyone's wages would go up.

If you don't want to suffer from periodontal disease, don't use an electric toothbrush. Brush by hand, plus floss and interdental brushes. It's a hassle, but you just have to carefully do each tooth one by one. With an electric toothbrush you feel like you've brushed even when it's not actually hitting the spot — it's actually doing harm.

Well, weather plays a role too, but if it's scientifically proven to reduce cavities, you'd think they'd just do it.

The fact that they don't suggests some group is using people's health for profit — that's basically a developing-country move. At the very least, if they actually cared about the public, you'd expect them to inform people about it.

Sure, it was only tested in some places, but since it's proven to reduce cavities, the US and South American countries have adopted it. Whether a country does this or not is basically a baseline test of how trustworthy it is.

There's no real cure for periodontal disease anyway. Cleanings just indirectly support your own brushing, that's about it.

In most cases it's really just that your immune system starts losing the fight against the bacteria as you age. Old people just have smelly, unclean mouths — that's how it goes.

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

“Dental Checkups for All Citizens” is a goal the government has pushed as policy in recent years, and this saliva-test subsidy is one concrete step toward it. The saliva test is strictly a simple screening tool, and the article itself doesn’t make clear whether the program guarantees follow-up treatment or visits for people who test positive — worth noting caution here, as post #44 points out. In the thread, opinions clashed over the sheer number of dental clinics and how healthcare spending is allocated, but as the article notes, dental costs make up less than 10% of Japan’s total medical spending. Also, the difficulty of getting dental appointments raised from post #169 onward could become a real design problem if expanding who gets checkups increases demand faster than the treatment side can keep up. The arguments over fluoridation reflect genuine differences in policy from country to country, but it’s worth keeping in mind that the thread’s sweeping judgments don’t necessarily add up to a fair verdict on the program as a whole.

  • Titanic Pose on Overseas Trip Sinks Fukuoka Assembly Party Leader’s Career

On the 5th, Kyoko Ota, leader of the Democratic Party for the People’s Fukuoka Prefectural Chapter (and a prefectural assembly member), announced her intention to resign as leader. She cited responsibility for a string of problems within the prefectural assembly, as well as the fact that during a 2024 visit to Thailand, she struck a pose on stage at a social gathering imitating the bow scene from the movie “Titanic” — photos of which went viral on social media and drew heavy criticism. In the thread, defenders arguing “resigning over a photo alone is excessive” clashed head-on with critics saying “the real problem is not realizing you were goofing off on a publicly funded trip,” and the discussion expanded further into the broader question of taxpayer money spent on these inspection trips, along with comparisons to lawmakers from other parties who struck similar poses in the past.

Democratic Party for the People Fukuoka Chapter’s Kyoko Ota to resign as leader… showed off “Titanic” pose on overseas inspection trip, “I feel remorse”: Regional News : Yomiuri Shimbun

On the 5th, Kyoko Ota, leader of the Democratic Party for the People’s Fukuoka Prefectural Chapter (a prefectural assembly member), revealed her intention to resign as leader. Ota told the Yomiuri Shimbun she was stepping down because “I take seriously, as a member of the assembly, the string of problems we’ve had in the prefectural assembly. I also feel remorse over my past conduct on an overseas inspection trip that was criticized on social media.”

Ota had visited Thailand in 2024 as part of activities by a voluntary lawmakers’ league. Together with several other lawmakers, she struck a pose on stage at a social gathering, recreating the bow scene from the movie “Titanic” featuring its two leads. Photos of this spread across social media, fueling growing criticism.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Ota’s stated reasons for resigning go beyond the “Titanic pose” criticism alone — they also include responsibility for a string of problems within the prefectural assembly. The overseas inspection trip in question was the 2024 visit to Thailand, and some comments point out that this year’s inspection trip to study Thai massage cost 4,839,000 yen in taxpayer money for 10 people over 5 days, suggesting the underlying issue isn’t just whether one photo was appropriate, but a broader distrust of how public funds get spent on these trips overall. In the thread, reactions like “don’t resign over something that minor” and “if you have convictions, stick to them” went head-to-head with others saying “it’d be stranger not to realize you were goofing off on public money,” leaving the question of whether resignation was warranted split down the middle. Some also pointed out that lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties, regardless of gender, have struck similar poses in the past, meaning this case isn’t uniquely exceptional. Many comments wryly noted how such photos tend to live on forever as “evidence,” with the discussion ultimately circling back to deeper doubts about the very purpose of these inspection trips.

  • 5ch’s VIP Board Crowdsources Dinner via Random Reply-Number Voting — Menu Ends Up With ‘Acorns’

On 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, a thread went up to decide dinner ingredients using the “anka” format — a game where a specific reply number is called out in advance, and whatever gets posted there becomes the pick. After crowdsourcing seven ingredients and three seasonings one anka at a time, the final menu turned into a chaotic mix: acorns, tofu, salmon, pork, basil, and zaza-mushi (a traditional aquatic-insect delicacy), plus a curry roux — topped off with fiery extras like habanero and wasabi. Partway through, someone even threw in a curry roux joke-named “Poop,” prompting the classic thought experiment from onlookers waiting on the sidelines: “which would you rather eat — poop-flavored curry, or curry-flavored poop?” The OP announced they’d step away and report back once the dish was finished, but the thread text alone doesn’t confirm whether it was ever actually completed.

Poop-flavored curry, or curry-flavored poop — which do you eat?
    "Neither" isn't an option
    Which one are you picking?

    Background and Talking Points

“Anka” is a VIP-board tradition where a specific reply number is designated ahead of time, and whatever gets posted at that number is adopted as the answer — a staple format used for everything from deciding meals to major life choices. This thread runs on the same format, picking ingredients one at a time via anka. Notably, “zaza-mushi” is a preserved dish of aquatic insects genuinely eaten in places like Nagano Prefecture — alongside hachinoko (bee larvae), it’s a real regional delicacy, making it the only actually traditional food among the joke ingredients. “Poop,” on the other hand, is just a joke name slapped onto a curry roux — it doesn’t refer to real excrement. The thread contains no photos of a finished dish and no follow-up report, so there’s no way to confirm what was ultimately made, or whether the cooking ever happened at all. Readers should keep in mind this thread is “half joke, follow-through unconfirmed.”

  • “Was I a Fool?” — 1,191 Investors Sue ‘Everyone’s Landlord’ Real Estate Fund

It has come to light that 1,191 investors in the real estate investment product “Minna de Ooyasan” (“Everyone’s Landlord”) are moving forward with a mass lawsuit demanding cancellations and refunds. A man in his 70s from the Kanto region poured his retirement savings into the scheme and says, “Was I a fool? Me?” The 5ch thread reacting to the report saw a clash between self-responsibility arguments (“there’s no such thing as guaranteed principal in investing”) and doubts about the product itself (“promising a 7% annual return was suspicious from the start”), with the discussion spilling over into why people convince themselves “surely I’ll be the exception.”

He thought he was buying peace of mind for his old age. He’d hoped it would help make ends meet, even just a little. But now past seventy, the man laughs weakly: “Was I a fool? Me?”

Over the real estate investment product “Minna de Ooyasan,” 1,191 investors are set to soon file a mass lawsuit demanding cancellations and refunds.

A man in his 70s living in the Kanto region filed his own suit in September, ahead of this mass action. Whether the retirement funds he sank into it will ever come back weighs on him constantly.

'Knowing something intellectually' and 'being able to stop yourself acting on it' are two different things.

An empty lot with literally nothing built on it, promising a 7% annual return

    And people seriously believed that?
    42AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:16
The second you see a projected annual yield of 7%, shouldn't alarm bells just go off — 'yeah yeah, scam, scam'?
    43AnonymousSep 6, 2026 19:17
The ones who think they're the exception tend to be a certain type — athletes, celebrities, that crowd.
They rationalize it as 'a deal this good is coming to me because I'm a big shot,'
and that's exactly how they get taken for a ride.
Same logic behind female celebrities falling hard for host club guys (male hosts paid to entertain women at nightclubs).

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Minna de Ooyasan” (“Everyone’s Landlord”) has been marketed as a fractional real estate investment product promising roughly 7% annual returns, but as an investment, there was never any real guarantee on principal or yield to begin with. What makes this case notable is its scale — 1,191 investors banding together for a mass lawsuit seeking refunds and cancellations — underscoring just how widespread the fallout has been. Opinion in the thread split between blaming investors for not spotting an unrealistically high yield, and blaming the product’s design and how it was sold. Behavioral economics has shown that the ‘surely I’ll be the exception’ mindset isn’t limited to the elderly and can affect anyone, meaning a simple self-responsibility argument doesn’t tell the whole story. What happens with the lawsuit, or any prospect of refunds, remains unclear from current reporting.

  • Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, Devas: 5ch Ranks the Buddhist Pantheon — “Miroku Bodhisattva Becomes a Buddha in 5.67 Billion Years”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board asking about the difference between “bodhisattva,” “nyorai (Buddha),” “Shaka,” and “Kannon” turned into a crowdsourced lecture on Buddhist hierarchy. Posters explained a four-tier ranking — Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, and Devas — with Dainichi Nyorai at the very top and Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai, and Amida Nyorai each handling their own role beneath him. But whether bodhisattvas count as “Buddhas,” and how Jizo Bodhisattva relates to Kannon Bodhisattva, sparked disagreement from post to post, with corrections and pushback flying throughout the thread.

Ashura was originally a Hindu god

    Re: #55
Pretty much, though the difference is Dainichi Nyorai isn't a sole god like Yahweh or Allah
Each Buddha has a distinct role

Shaka Nyorai = spreads the Buddha's teachings to the people
Yakushi Nyorai = governs health, protecting people from illness and injury
Amida Nyorai = saves people after death and in the next life

    51AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:27
    Re: #42
It's complicated. Taken in the narrowest sense, "Buddha" means just the Buddha himself — Shaka Nyorai alone. But other accomplished practitioners said to have attained enlightenment the same way as the Buddha were also called Nyorai and treated as Buddhas.
Beyond that, there's a long history of bodhisattvas who haven't become Nyorai but are close to it — Miroku Bodhisattva especially, since he's foretold to be the next to complete his training — along with many other objects of worship, being popularly treated as "Buddhas" in the broad sense, even if that's technically inaccurate.
Though exactly how far that extends varies a bit by sect.

    Re: #65
Like I wrote above, that's because Buddhism absorbed the Hindu gods and slotted them in as revered but subordinate figures (though some of those gods became bodhisattvas or Wisdom Kings, and some Nyorai are also said to trace back to Hindu gods)
But ranking low on paper doesn't mean low in popularity — it's common for a Deva to be far more beloved than some Nyorai who's technically ranked higher but feels totally unrelatable
    78AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:38
    Shaka
→ An actual historical person who lived in India
→ Called "Shaka Nyorai" because he attained enlightenment.

    Kannon
→ A bodhisattva known as Kannon Bodhisattva.
→ Worshipped as a being who saves those who suffer.

    Nyorai
→ The group name for "Buddhas who have completed enlightenment."

    Bodhisattva
→ A being who "strives toward enlightenment while saving others."

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The four-tier classification of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Wisdom Kings, and Devas comes mainly from how figures are positioned in the mandalas of Esoteric Buddhism (the Shingon school) — it isn’t an official hierarchy shared across all Buddhist sects. The claim that Miroku Bodhisattva will become a Buddha in 5.67 billion years traces back to the “Miroku descent” belief, which holds that Miroku (Maitreya) will be reborn in the far-distant future, long after Shakyamuni’s death, and attain enlightenment there. The idea raised in the thread that Amaterasu is identified with Dainichi Nyorai, and Hachiman with Amida Nyorai, reflects shinbutsu-shugo, the historical framework blending Shinto and Buddhism that was widespread before the Meiji-era decree separating the two religions. On the other hand, claims like “Ashura Kannon” or “Jizo Bodhisattva is an incarnation of Kannon Bodhisattva” are folk notions not found in standard Buddhist scholarship — as posters themselves pointed out and corrected within the thread — so they shouldn’t be taken at face value.
