  • Brazil’s meat exports to EU halted — 5ch: ‘That distinctive stink is honestly rough’

5ch reacted to a Nikkei report that Brazil has been barred from exporting meat to the EU since September 3 for failing to meet safety standards, with industry groups now hoping this will open the door to the Japanese market instead. Rather than raising new facts, the thread mostly turned into a swap of personal experiences with the taste, texture, and price of Brazilian chicken and pork already sold in Japan. Complaints about the smell and greasiness stood out, but some pointed out that the price gap with domestic meat has been narrowing, and others noted that Japan already imports US and Australian beef raised with growth hormones the EU bans — broadening the discussion into just how loose Japan’s own food safety standards really are.

[São Paulo — Niki Mizuguchi] As of the 3rd, Brazil can no longer export meat and other products to the European Union (EU). The EU had determined that Brazil fails to meet food safety standards. This could be a blow to Brazil, which has been working to expand into markets including Japan.

The EU bans the use of antimicrobial agents used to promote animal growth in livestock farming. In May, it announced it would remove Brazil from its list of approved exporting countries after failing to confirm compliance with that rule. (Continued at source)

The fat has a really strong stink to it. Put it in a hot pot and it reeks so bad you can't eat it, and for karaage you have to trim off every last bit of fat or it'll make you gag once it cools down. About the only fix is heavily seasoned chicken steak, but even then the meat itself barely has any flavor.

Honestly it just feels like it hasn't been prepped properly. I buy Brazilian chicken at the supermarket, and compared to domestic, the first difference is the prep work — it hasn't been trimmed.

Excess sinew, blood vessels, fat — none of that's been dealt with. I trim it myself, but once you turn it into karaage it's actually pretty decent.
    91AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:41
    Re: #66
So it's "pretty decent" only after you've trimmed it yourself AND made karaage out of it? I bet you're also marinating it thoroughly beforehand. Sounds like a hassle lol

At this weekend's sale near me, Brazilian is going for 60-something yen per 100g, while domestic is 98 yen even at its cheapest. A 30-yen gap isn't exactly "a little."

Background and key points of this debate

The EU’s export ban isn’t really a blanket verdict on the safety of the meat itself — it stems from a procedural compliance failure, specifically the EU’s inability to confirm how antimicrobial growth promoters were actually being used on Brazilian livestock. Japan continues to negotiate an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Brazil, and Brazil is hoping Japan can serve as an alternative market. Where the thread split was on the question of whether imported meat is actually dangerous. In reality, US and Australian beef sold in Japan is also raised using growth hormones the EU bans — a detail that’s easy to miss, since whether imports from a given country get cut off has more to do with differing regulatory policies between countries and regions than with any absolute safety threshold. Some also pointed out that the price gap between domestic and imported chicken has been narrowing in recent years, so the simple idea that “imported equals cheap” is already starting to break down.

  • Hypothermia on Mt. Fuji: Man in His 20s Forgot His Rain Pants, Collapses Near 8th Station During a Meetup Climb

On September 6, Shizuoka Prefectural Police’s mountain rescue team saved a man in his 20s who had become unable to move while descending Mt. Fuji near the 8th station. The man had climbed Fuji as part of an offline meetup with friends he’d met through a smartphone game, and forgetting the pants to his rain gear left him chilled to the point of apparent hypothermia. On 5ch, posters questioned why a smartphone game meetup turned into a Mt. Fuji climb and criticized the sloppy gear planning that skipped proper rain protection, while others with firsthand experience noted that cases serious enough to require an actual rescue transport are rare — most people simply recover at the 8th station rest hut — revealing a divide in how seriously posters take the risk of getting stranded on the mountain.

    89AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:18
"Forgot it" → more like left it behind on purpose because it's a hassle. I'm a farmer, so I often work in just the rain jacket without the pants. Putting the pants on is a pain — they trap moisture and you end up soaked in sweat anyway. Whether you wear them or not, your pants end up wet either way, so it doesn't really make a difference.
    99AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:25
    Re: #89
It's really common for beginners to underestimate how much they need rain pants on a mountain. Mountain rain splashes back up at you from below (and on Fuji especially, wind gusts blast straight up the slope), so you really can't handle it without them. Down at sea level it wouldn't matter, but up there it's a different story.

    183AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:59
Climbing in obviously terrible weather with no rain gear, lol. Why didn't his friends stop him? lol

    Background and Key Points

Mt. Fuji stands 3,776 meters tall, and temperature is said to drop roughly 0.6°C per 100 meters of elevation, so even when it’s comfortable at the base, the area around the 8th station (over 3,000 meters) can dip into single-digit temperatures Celsius even in midsummer — and once clothing gets wet from rain, wind chill accelerates the drop in body temperature even further. Some posters in the thread claimed “even the summit should be around 20°C,” but that reflects a misunderstanding that underestimates high-altitude weather conditions. Also, most people who get into trouble on the mountain aren’t seriously ill enough to need a rescue transport — the majority simply recover at the 8th station mountain hut, and helicopter evacuation is reserved for only the more severe cases. It’s also worth keeping in mind that climbs organized among friends who met through a smartphone game — a different kind of motivation and relationship than traditional mountaineering enthusiasts — are becoming more common, and this trend is part of the backdrop that makes it easier for basic gear like rain protection to get overlooked.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “Forgot the pants to his rain gear and got cold… Man in his 20s climbs Mt. Fuji via a smartphone game app meetup, becomes unable to move near the 8th station while descending, possible hypothermia.”

  • 36.9% of Single-Parent Kids Ate Just 2 Meals a Day or Fewer Over Summer Break — 5ch: ‘Life’s Just a Parent Gacha’ (the luck-of-the-draw lottery of who your parents are)

A survey by the NPO Single Mothers’ Forum, which supports single-parent households, found that in 36.9% of these families children got by on two meals a day or fewer during summer break. The survey covered roughly 2,200 single-parent households nationwide from July 20 to 26, and many parents cited cutting food costs as the reason. In response, the group says the child-rearing allowance hasn’t kept pace with rising prices and is calling for it to be expanded. On 5ch, users weighed in with everything from their own eating habits to opinions on how benefit payments should be spent.

A survey by a private organization found on the 6th that in 36.9% of single-parent households, children got by on two meals a day or fewer during summer break. Most parents cited cutting food costs as the reason, suggesting rising prices are forcing families to skimp on children’s meals.

Masako Komori, head of the NPO Single Mothers’ Forum (Tokyo), which conducted the survey, said the child-rearing allowance for low-income single-parent households “hasn’t kept up with rising prices” and is calling on the government to expand it.

The survey was conducted nationwide among single-parent households from July 20 to 26, drawing about 2,200 responses.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The child-rearing allowance is a national benefit for low-income single-parent households, but its payment amount isn’t automatically raised in step with inflation—adjusting the level requires a change to the system itself. This survey argues the allowance hasn’t kept pace with actual rising living costs; roughly 2,200 responses gives it a reasonable sample size, though it’s worth noting the responses were voluntary. On the thread, many commenters chimed in with “two meals is normal” or “I lived the same way,” but these are mostly accounts of adults’ eating habits, which rest on different assumptions than the nutritional needs of children who are still growing. Some questioned how the benefit money gets spent, but the survey itself is about whether the payment level is adequate, not an audit of how individual households use the funds.

I actually thought "OG" was her initials.

Less damaging than a leaked sex tape, at least.

    OG… Ogura Hisahiro…?

    Someone from Onyanko Club.

At her age it'd be a secret grandkid, not a secret kid.
    19AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:53
No way she could keep performing while pregnant, so this has gotta be someone from way back.
    20AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:53
Idol work is just a job — if she managed to hide it the whole time she was active, good for her.
    21AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:53
The only "OG" I can think of is Otokogumi (an '80s boy band).
    22AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:53
If she's got a kid, just let it go — the kid's gonna get bullied over this.
    23AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:54
So even that "Ooturu Gitan" had a secret kid?! (garbled name, in-joke unclear)

Just looked it up — turns out she's not just got kids, she's got grandkids lol
    26AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:54
    Morning Musume or AKB?
If we assume she's at least somewhat famous, that narrows it to maybe 10 people?
    27AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:54
Apparently Yokoyama Rurika suddenly quit her horse racing show.
    42AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:56

"National idol group," though. (doesn't fit)
    33AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:55
Could she really hide a baby bump and give birth while still active as an idol without fans catching on?
    35AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:55
The fact that they're teasing it this hard means it's probably not that big a deal.
    39AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:55
This reminds me of Sumida Yuki's Ogawa Coffee commercial with the line "Let's go with OG."
    40AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:55
What does OG even stand for again?
"Old Girl"? If so, it's a woman.

    Yeah, fair.
It's really just nice getting an update on someone who's been out of the spotlight for so long.

Background and key points of this discussion

The headline stems from a “scoop teaser” that photo tabloid websites post on X ahead of the print magazine’s release — a technique that withholds the subject’s real name to build interest before the full article goes up. Entertainment magazines have leaned on this tactic heavily in recent years, and the post itself contains almost no information that could identify who’s actually involved. The thread’s central debate over “OG” refers to a term used in school clubs meaning “Old Girl,” i.e. a graduate — in idol lingo it’s shorthand for “former member.” Even so, with only three clues to go on — “national,” “OG,” and “10-year-old son” — narrowing it down to a single person proved difficult, and candidates like Morning Musume, AKB48, and Onyanko Club never rose above speculation. There were even cases of posters self-correcting mid-thread, as with the Yokoyama Rurika theory, which was walked back with “she’s not from a national idol group.” Since the magazine’s actual article remained unconfirmed at the time of writing, the real identity and facts of the matter would need to be verified separately through the original source.

  • Sony’s Revenue More Than Double Nintendo’s, But Nintendo Wins on Profit Margin — 5ch: “PS Is Just Too Strong”

For the fiscal year ending March 2027, Sony Group’s Game & Network Services segment is projected to post sales of ¥4.4 trillion and operating profit of ¥660 billion (a 15% margin). Nintendo, meanwhile, expects game segment sales of ¥2.05 trillion and operating profit of ¥370 billion (an 18% margin), with company-wide net profit of ¥310 billion. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, opinions split between posters praising Sony for its far larger scale and others questioning a simple comparison, citing the higher margin and the lack of a disclosed net-profit figure for the segment — sparking a lively debate.

Sales: ¥4.7 trillion (a new record high every year)
    Profit: ¥470 billion
    Software units sold: 320 million
    6AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:41
    Man, Sony really is something.
Honestly, since they stopped announcing software sales in "10,000-unit" figures, it's pretty clear sales aren't great.
But doesn't that mean they've built a business model that turns a profit even when hardware doesn't sell?
Not trolling here, but they've built a business that breaks from the old common sense of "make your money selling games and consoles."

In a launch year you're booking R&D costs for the Switch 2 hardware itself, and since the console hasn't spread widely yet there's a low ceiling on software sales — so both revenue and profit dip.
Year 4 onward is when it'll peak.
    17AnonymousSep 6, 2026 17:46
    Re: #14
Aren't they booking R&D costs every year anyway?
Or are they front-loading 8 years' worth at once? (lol)

You're the one playing trash on your console, aren't you? Or do you not even play it, just bask in the feeling of owning one?
Most domestic PS users, aside from a small core, don't even buy new releases — yet you talk big. (lol)
Guess that's the fate of owners of hardware that's great on paper but doesn't sell?

    It's the R&D spending.

    No wonder the margin's lower.

Miyamoto: First of all, I was glad the Switch lasted 8 to 9 years. I don't think this is an era where customers are chasing specs above all else anymore. My ideal is that as long as you buy the software, you can play it on whatever machine you already have at home. Smartphones have already become something that's "everywhere," after all — I think that's one form of the ideal.

Since that's the "ideal" he's describing, doesn't that make it a rival? (lol)
    56AnonymousSep 6, 2026 18:07
Same as how the Famicom (NES) once got totally crushed by PlayStation and lost its dominance —
hardware that's inferior is simply doomed to fade away.
And on top of that, "Owatendo" (a mocking nickname meaning "Nintendo is finished") can't even undercut on price anymore, so they're completely cornered.

Nintendo could probably build buildings to their heart's content.

They could probably even dabble in real estate as a side business without breaking a sweat.

No one expected prices to shoot up like that.
Without the price hike they probably could've kept up the fastest-ever sales pace, so that's just bad luck.

Sony's fine since they can keep riding the PS5, but launching a brand-new console is rough.

Background and key points of the debate

Nintendo is in the launch year of its new Switch 2 hardware, a period typically marked by heavy upfront investment and R&D spending, yet its operating margin (18%) still comes out ahead of Sony’s (15%). On the other hand, Sony’s game segment revenue of ¥4.4 trillion is more than double Nintendo’s ¥2.05 trillion, and the thread split over whether to weigh “scale” or “margin” more heavily. It’s also easy to overlook that Sony doesn’t disclose net profit for its game segment alone, and there were pointed comments about how advertising expenses are categorized in the filings — meaning which figures you focus on can flip the impression of who “won.” Judging management performance on a simple revenue comparison alone would be premature.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, a.k.a. “Geha”) thread “Earnings reveal that even in FY2025, Sony’s PS5 is crushing it, utterly beating trash Nintendo lmaooo.”

  • Sony Registers ‘Legend of Zelda’ Domain, Sparks Buzz Over Movie Distribution Deal

Sony’s registration of domain names related to a live-action “Legend of Zelda” film has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. It’s already known that Sony Pictures will distribute the movie, and the thread buzzed with questions like “why Sony?” and “aren’t these two rivals — so why are they cooperating on a movie?” Some posters brought up the infamous collapse of the 1991 joint PlayStation development plan, reviving discussion of Nintendo and Sony’s tangled 30-plus-year relationship. Much of the thread, though, leaned more toward playful “who’s really on top” needling between fanbases than toward pinning down hard facts.

Meanwhile Spider-Man's over here like "Xperia…? (fiddling with a Galaxy phone)"

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sony and Nintendo compete directly in the games industry, yet they’ve maintained a long-running licensing relationship through their music and film divisions. For this live-action “Legend of Zelda” film, Sony Pictures was chosen partly because so few companies can handle worldwide theatrical distribution — so the two companies aren’t simply rivals here. The thread also revisited the story of the failed 1991 joint PlayStation development plan and the subsequent falling-out over the CD-ROM standard (sometimes nicknamed the “Yamaichi War,” after a notorious business feud), a reminder of just how long this history runs. That said, the domain registration itself is only an early sign of things to come — the actual terms of the distribution deal and how box-office revenue will be split haven’t been disclosed. Much of the thread’s chatter boiled down to “who’s really on top”-style needling, so it’s worth remembering that the only confirmed fact here is that preparations for the film’s release are moving forward.

*This article was compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “Geha”) board thread “Sony registers a “Legend of Zelda” domain lol.”

  • “Centering” and “Hooligan” Are Dead Words Now? 5ch Asks: “What Do We Even Call It Today?”

5ch lit up over the fact that soccer commentary terms like “centering” (crossing the ball) and “hooligan,” once common in match broadcasts, are barely heard anymore. The thread kept circling back to the question “what do people call centering now?” but no one ever landed on a clear replacement term. Meanwhile, someone explained that hooligans disappeared because “ticket prices were raised to keep low-income fans out of the stadium,” which drew some surprised reactions. The discussion also branched into topics like the price of standing-room seats behind the goal in the J.League and who actually buys them.

Well, for top clubs regular seats start at a minimum of around 5,000 yen, though it's not that different if you're talking about some regional J3 club.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The shift from “centering” to “crossing” is believed to have spread gradually through match broadcasts and analysis sometime after the 2000s, but there’s no clear line marking exactly when the switch happened — even in the thread, the question “what do you call it now” kept coming up without ever being answered. The hooligan problem became a major social issue in England in the 1980s, and following tragedies like the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, measures such as all-seater stadiums, CCTV surveillance, and stricter entry controls were introduced alongside higher ticket prices, which made it harder for lower-income fans to attend — a factor often cited in the decline. The thread’s explanation that “they don’t come because they can’t get in” is true as far as it goes, but it’s only one part of a broader set of measures including tightened security and club-led countermeasures; it’s a common misconception that hooligans themselves vanished from the world entirely. The discussion of the J.League’s cheap standing-room seats behind the goal and who buys them is a separate, Japan-specific topic unrelated to anti-hooligan measures abroad.

  • Morning Musume.’s New Tour Merch: Moa Suzuki Sells Out Repeatedly While Miyu Yasuda Struggles, Fans Say

On day two of Morning Musume.’s ’26 Fall Tour, following the announcement that Miyu Yasuda and Moa Suzuki would be the “2TOP,” posts about that day’s merchandise sales results poured into the Hello! Project board on 5ch. Detailed reports tracked sellouts at both the venue and online, and while Moa Suzuki stood out with acrylic stands and T-shirts selling out repeatedly, many pointed out that Miyu Yasuda’s sales were sluggish outside of the daily-rotation item. Discussion also spread around the popularity gap among 18th-gen members Sugihara, Inoue, and Ishikawa, with some posts voicing distrust in “Ōkami” (a fan-run site known for predicting member popularity rankings) after its predictions didn’t match the actual sales results.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The central point of contention in the thread was whether “how fast merch sells out” can really be equated with “popularity.” Since stock levels vary widely from member to member to begin with, posters repeatedly countered that a slower sellout doesn’t necessarily mean lower popularity. Others pointed out that “stackable” collectibles like figures and acrylic stands are fundamentally different from venue-exclusive merchandise, reflecting a wariness toward simple comparisons. Some also questioned the reliability of “Ōkami” (an unofficial, message-board-born site fans use as a gauge for predicting member popularity), since its predictions didn’t match the actual sales results. Note: this article excludes posts that disparage specific members’ appearance or attack individuals by name, and only extracts exchanges centered on merchandise sales data.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Since Hello! Project is home to several sister groups, fan-driven comparison wars over attendance numbers and CD/Blu-ray sales are a recurring staple on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. This thread was sparked by audience footage from NHK’s Venue102, with ANGERME initially getting mocked — only for the conversation to flip once posters pointed out that Juice=Juice’s own autumn tour and festival tickets weren’t selling well either. It’s worth noting that the attendance estimates and “X copies sold” disc-sales figures cited throughout the thread are based purely on individual posters’ own knowledge or images, and have not been verified against official figures. The “audience demographic” photo comparisons and references to the “Moremi” effect are also steeped in fandom-insider context that may be hard for outside readers to follow.

  • Tell This to Your 2024 Self About 2026’s Gaming Consoles—They Won’t Believe You

A thread on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Geha)” board asked what stories from today would sound unbelievable if told to your 2024 self. Nintendo’s new Switch 2 launched at ¥59,980, drawing comparisons to the Xbox Series S at ¥82,480 and the PS5 Digital Edition at ¥55,000. The PS5’s discontinued physical media production became a hot topic, and some posters noted that GTA6 actually came out in September 2026. While users piled on industry changes that would have seemed unimaginable two years ago, some in the thread took a cooler view, noting it was really just the usual console-war bickering dressed up as commentary.

Pretty sure it's been getting treated like a glorified smartphone since two years ago

    Background and Key Points

As post #83 notes, the president’s “apology over sales” wasn’t about poor performance — some replies clarify it actually referred to demand outstripping supply, so taking it at face value is easy to misread. The rumor about the PS5 dropping physical media also predates this thread; post #19 links to an earlier thread on the same topic. The Geha board is known for its distinctive console-war trash talk, but none of it is backed by official announcements or statistics — it’s all personal opinion and shouldn’t be taken as fact. Overall, the thread is less a market analysis than the usual round of hardware-versus-hardware sniping.
