  • Doubts Cast on Noritake Kinashi’s ‘Nice Guy’ Image — 5ch: ‘Never Had That Image to Begin With’

Tunnels’ Noritake Kinashi has drawn renewed criticism after footage resurfaced showing him climbing onto the roof of a Mercedes-Benz during episode 30 of “Kinashi Record,” streamed on ABEMA on April 25, 2026. With his comedy partner Takaaki Ishibashi having largely disappeared from the public eye, one article asked whether Kinashi’s “nice guy” reputation was ever real — prompting a wave of responses on 5ch along the lines of “he never had that image to begin with” and “he’s always been the reckless one.” Others pushed back, noting reports that the car’s owner had actually asked him to climb onto the roof, and questioned whether the article was cherry-picking the story.

Never had a 'nice guy' image at all.
    5AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:45
He's always been in the same lane as Horiken from Neptune (the trio's resident weirdo).
    6AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:46
Nah, he's been the loose-cannon character since forever.
What are you even talking about?
    10AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:47
This is such a forced hit piece on Kinashi…
    What's the actual agenda here?
    11AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:47
Getting Noritake himself to step on your Benz would be bragging rights for generations.
    12AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:47
I just see it as bubble-era excess and destructive vibes.
    13AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:47
Wasn't it the rapper who put him up to it?
    15AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:48
The rapper was the one who told him to get up there.
    Enough with the spin already.

He never had a 'nice guy' image to begin with.
    23AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:51
Even back at their peak over 30 years ago, everyone said Ishibashi was the sensible one and Kinashi was the weird one. Why act surprised now?
    24AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:51
He's had such a long career precisely because he's not a nice guy.
    25AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:51
Kinashi was always worse than Ishibashi when it came to bullying ADs (assistant directors) and juniors — why the surprise now?
    26AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:52
Maybe he'll start selling Benz-branded bicycles next (´・ω・`)
    27AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:52
Still trying to mislead people with this after-the-fact 'kotatsu article' (a lazy piece written from home with no real reporting)?
    29AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:54
Doesn't he know the tide has already turned?
Way too out of the loop for a journalist.
    30AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:54
    Showa era?
Tunnels' peak was during the Heisei era, wasn't it?
    31AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:54
I always figured this was just his comedy style.
    32AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:54
The follow-up video already changed the narrative — why run this article now?
    33AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:54
Who knew Tunnels and Downtown would fade while Unnan (Utchan Nanchan) is the one still standing.
    35AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:56
If he did this in private, sure, judge his character — but you can't tell anything from an edited TV clip lol.
    37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:59
Anyone saying he never had a nice-guy image is a newbie fan.
Kinashi genuinely did have a nice-guy image back in the day.
It was Ishibashi who smashed the camera while Kinashi just recoiled in shock.
It was Ishibashi who boycotted the radio show.
It was Ishibashi who blew up live on a music program.
    39AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:01
I remember Bananaman saying on their radio show once that Kinashi was actually the scarier one in Tunnels.
    41AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:01
The car's owner literally asked him to get on the roof.
Whether the writer knew that or not,
it's embarrassing for K Dub Shine's crew (referring to the rapper) to push this.
    42AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:02
Nice guy? Who, him? He's famous for being unhinged.
    43AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:03
It was forgivable as harmless mischief when he was young,
but it's rough seeing him still doing this as he nears old age.
    44AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:04
Now that Takashi (Ishibashi) is out of the picture,
Nori (Kinashi) is getting hit with merciless criticism.
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:05
Never got what was funny about their student-humor act or that Teikyo University in-crowd vibe, even back when they were young.
Though Yoshimoto comedians are even more cringe-inducing.
    84AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:34
This is just web news stirring things up — for older folks, denting a car is nothing compared to what Takeshi and Sanma have done.
Young people probably don't even care about Kinashi anyway.
    88AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:41
    Re: #84
With Takeshi and Sanma there's an established running bit, and apparently Sanma even left his scar unfixed because he thought it looked cooler.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Kinashi Record” is a show streamed on ABEMA, and renewed attention to a scene from its April 25, 2026 episode — in which Noritake Kinashi climbed onto the roof of a Mercedes-Benz — sparked criticism. With his partner Takaaki Ishibashi having rarely appeared in public in recent years amid recurring speculation about his health, the article in question took the angle of re-evaluating Kinashi’s own behavior as that of a “loose cannon.” Opinion on the thread split over whether to view the act as “a trait he’s always had” or as “behavior that’s no longer acceptable now that he’s older.” It’s also worth noting that, according to some reports, the car’s owner had actually asked him to climb onto the roof — a claim the article doesn’t confirm one way or the other — which drew its own share of criticism over selective reporting. Tunnels have been known since the 1980s for their body-on-the-line stunts, and the contrast between Kinashi’s and Ishibashi’s personas has long been a topic of discussion.

  • Late-Night Pickup at Yodobashi Stores Sparks Buzz: ‘Basically Lets You Shop 24/7’

Yodobashi Camera’s online store, “Yodobashi.com,” offers an “order online, pick up in store” service — and the fact that you can actually pick up items late at night, outside normal business hours, became a hot topic on social media after an ITmedia article spotlighted it. On 5channel (5ch), users shared firsthand accounts of ordering from their phone right outside the store and picking the item up the moment the “ready for pickup” notification arrived, effectively making 24-hour shopping possible. At the same time, discussion turned to the finer details — how long the wait actually is between placing an order and having the item ready, how out-of-stock items get handled — along with comparisons of price and selection against other retailers like Amazon.

Amazon treats Yodobashi.com as its 'imaginary enemy state.'
They've basically been forced to use 0.9x Yodobashi.com's price (10% points back on everything, plus free delivery) as their pricing benchmark.
    6AnonymousSep 6, 2026 07:36
    Re: #4
Amazon's free delivery doesn't let you pick a time slot, so I barely buy from them anymore.
    5AnonymousSep 6, 2026 07:20
The post office used to have a late-night pickup window too, but they stopped doing that.
    7AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:00
The perk here is you can order online right outside the store late at night, and the moment the 'ready for pickup' email lands, walk to the counter, pay, and go — basically 24-hour shopping.
    8AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:10

Pickup I get, but do they actually process the order and prep the item overnight? If so, that's godlike.

    Re: #8
    They do.
    17AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:41
    Re: #8
They do, but if you place the order online after you've already shown up at the store, it's not instant — you'll wait at least 30 minutes even in the best case. They run the store with a skeleton crew overnight, there are other customers already in the queue ahead of you, and staff have to go dig through the store to find your item (customers obviously don't get to walk the closed sales floor themselves), so it takes a while.
And if that particular store doesn't have the item in stock, obviously it's not showing up in 30 minutes. They bring it in from another location, so you're looking at half a day at best, up to two days if you're unlucky.
    9AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:49
If it's the same price, I'll buy from Yodobashi over Amazon.
    34AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:39

Thing is, it's usually not the same price…
And the selection's pretty weak too.

Looks like you can even pick up a full-size fridge late at night, but you'd need a mini-truck to actually haul it home.

24-hour service is nice, but since you're hauling stuff home by car anyway, a suburban distribution warehouse would honestly be more convenient than a downtown store.

I wonder if some company will start offering this kind of service more broadly.
Feels like it could help ease the load on distribution resources, but maybe it just wouldn't get used enough?
The usage fee would probably get tacked on too, I bet…
    30AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:11
There can't be that many items actually eligible for pickup, right? Isn't most of Yodobashi.com's stock special-order items?
    31AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:21
    Re: #30
Well yeah, it's limited to stuff that's physically in the store.
    32AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:23
    Re: #30
Actually, even special-order items can't be picked up same-day, but they're still available for pickup 24 hours a day once ready.
    33AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:28
Yodobashi.com's service can genuinely beat Amazon's.
The downsides are that way too many items are out of stock, and the order history search is just garbage.
    35AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:51
Yodobashi just uses its stores as e-commerce warehouses,
and the 24-hour service is basically just a side effect of that.
    36AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:06
That's not the only reason though.
It's also because you actually get the item you expected.
    37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:16
Some people are bringing up Amazon, but there's:
    – sold by Amazon, shipped by Amazon
    – sold by a third-party shop, shipped by Amazon
    – sold by a shop, shipped by the shop
and each of these is a totally different situation.
At most, only the first two are even comparable to Yodobashi.com.
That last category has some decent sellers, but it's a minefield of slow shipping, so it's not really fair to compare.
    39AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:25
    Re: #37
Doesn't that just make them a middleman skimming a cut off the top, though~?
    38AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:22
    Re: #34
But even when you buy 'new' on Amazon, sometimes you get a grubby, obviously-handled 'used' item instead.
With Yodobashi you just get an actual new item, no drama.
    40AnonymousSep 6, 2026 15:34
The search function feels a bit dated, but that actually makes it easier to use.
Most of all, it doesn't clutter the results with a bunch of irrelevant junk — that's a huge plus.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “order online, pick up in store” service itself has actually existed since around 2018, so it’s not exactly new. It generally only covers items already in stock at that specific store — special-order items are hard to pick up the same day, and depending on the store, the wait can run anywhere from half a day to two days. Even for late-night orders, items aren’t handed over instantly; staff have to locate and prepare them from the sales floor, so it typically takes around 30 minutes, longer when things are busy. In the thread, opinions split between praise for the convenience — “you can basically shop 24 hours a day” — and skepticism over whether staffing a pickup counter overnight actually costs more than just doing delivery, with reactions varying depending on whether people weighted convenience or operating costs more heavily. Comparisons with Amazon came up often too, though most claims about price, stock, and guaranteed-new condition were based on individual users’ personal experience rather than any official comparative data — worth keeping in mind.

  • “Sell Your Paper Books and They’re Basically Free” — 5ch: “You Can Read New Releases for About 400 Yen”

A thread on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board (Nandemo Jikkyo G), titled “Books are digital now — paper books are obsolete,” drew a wave of pushback from posters defending physical books. The flashpoint was a “buy-then-resell” reading style: selling a paper book on Mercari or BookOff right after finishing it, effectively reading it for a few hundred yen. E-book fans cited the hassle of storage and wear as reasons to avoid paper, but paper fans countered that once you factor in resale value, the per-book cost actually beats digital. Posters also split over what counts as a “specialist book” and over the limits of library request systems.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:17
Nah, if anything, now is the golden age of paper books.
Buy a paper book, get it cheap secondhand, read it, then flip it on Mercari — basically free.
And even without a sale, secondhand copies are always cheap anyway.
    2AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:17
People say paper books take up space, but if you sell them right after finishing, they don't pile up.
There's only so many books you'd actually reread anyway.
    30AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:30
    Re: #2
The fact that you HAVE to sell it right away feels like a downside to me.
With e-books you don't have to sell anything at all.

I've done both, and when I actually go back and reread something, it's always the paper copy.
    Plus you can resell it.

    15AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:24

Maybe it's server costs or something, but yeah, e-books are basically always pricier than they should be.
About the only place digital wins is something like Kindle Unlimited.
Though Unlimited doesn't even have that many good books, so I barely use it.
    26AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:28

Yeah, that's especially true for manga.
Specialist books and magazines are actually decent on there though.
    37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:34
    Re: #26
No, it's actually genius — most manga gets boring partway through anyway, so by the time it'd start charging you, you've already quit reading. Might as well be free.
    18AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:26
Paper books have gotten so expensive I only buy on e-book sales now.
Why does a single manga volume cost almost 1,000 yen?
    31AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:31
    Re: #18
That's on you for buying at full price.
Buy from BookOff or Mercari instead.
    20AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:27
I switch depending on what it's for — paper for business and specialist books I sit down and study, digital for novels and manga.
    25AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:28
    Re: #20
Manga and novels are exactly the stuff I'd say default to paper — you usually only read them once, so being able to resell pays off.
Plus secondhand prices start cheap anyway.
Though I do buy digital on sale for the rare series I actually reread.
    28AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:30
    Re: #23
I read manga too, but I wasn't only talking about manga.
If anything, text-heavy specialist books hold their resale value better than manga, so they're even more suited to paper.
    34AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:32

You were talking about manga though.
    33AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:32

    Fair enough.
Books are cheap per unit anyway, and there's shipping on top — not factoring in the labor and cost is very "paper diehard" of you.
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:37
    Re: #33
The "labor" involved is like a tiny fraction of the effort it takes to earn money at a job.
Feeling annoyed or bothered while not working still beats actually working.
    35AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:32
    Re: #30
On the flip side, a book that doesn't sell means you effectively overpaid for it.
Not being able to recoup any money once you're done with it is rough — especially for expensive books.
    39AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:35
    Re: #34
I'd honestly like to know why you'd think that — I read text-heavy niche books way more than manga.
Some good ones I've read lately:
    Japan's Bookstores
The Complete Guide to Nostalgic Japanese Soft Drinks
    BookOff University: The Wandering Department
The Gold Guide to Non-Commercial Game Software
The Complete Famicom Disk System Guide
    Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ Dissected
    — stuff like that.
    50AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:38
    Re: #39
How is any of that a "specialist book"? Those are just mooks (magazine-book hybrids)!
    40AnonymousSep 6, 2026 14:35
Even for a novel I'm dying to read at 2,000 yen — I'll buy it, read it the same day, list it on Mercari, and it'll sell for around 1,900 yen.
After fees and shipping, that's roughly 1,600 yen back.
So I end up reading brand-new releases for basically 400 yen. I do this all the time.

Things like guides for non-commercial game software or Famicom stock-trading software that list exact model numbers and version differences — that's the kind of obsessive-detail book that gets me, exactly the passion-project specialist stuff I love.

Sounds like you've never read a money book.
I'd recommend starting with The Millionaire Next Door.

Background and key points of this debate

Against the e-book camp’s argument that paper books “take up space” and “deteriorate,” the thread kept circling back to a third option: reselling used copies. Anecdotes about selling a new release on BookOff or Mercari and, after fees and shipping, ending up paying only a few hundred yen net, work from a different baseline than the e-book side’s price comparisons, which tend to focus only on list price. Meanwhile, e-book prices are often close to paper prices, and posters pointed out that Kindle Unlimited — which offers “only the first few volumes free” — isn’t well suited to manga, meaning the assumed savings are often overestimated. The thread also split over the definition of a “specialist book,” clashing over whether magazine-style mooks like out-of-print game strategy guides count. It’s also easy to overlook that library request systems have caps — nobody can request unlimited books for free.

That's exactly what I keep telling you —
those are Aimyon's temporary tattoo stickers

    Background and Points of Debate

In Japan, tattoos still carry a strong stigma — many public bathhouses and hot springs refuse entry to anyone with tattoos, and older generations often associate them with organized crime. At the same time, tattoos have become increasingly common among musicians and athletes in recent years. The thread brought up both Hyde and Messi, splitting into two camps: those who say “it’s fine if you’re a performer/artist,” and those who more harshly argue “she should be standing out through her actual music, not her looks.” One comment also raised the possibility that these were merely temporary tattoo stickers rather than real ink, and it’s worth noting that Aimyon herself has not confirmed whether the tattoos are real or how many she has. Her hometown also became a point of confusion, with an incorrect claim that she’s “a delinquent from Osaka” being corrected to Hyogo Prefecture — a reminder that this is the kind of topic that spreads easily even while the facts remain unclear. The whole discussion grew out of a single photo she posted on social media, and there has been no official comment from her about her intentions or the number and content of the tattoos.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Aimyon’s Latest Look — Tattoos Fully Exposed on Shoulders and Both Arms: ‘I Wish She Hadn’t Gotten Them,’ ‘Surprised She’s Got Quite a Bit of Ink,’ ‘The Tattoos Are Cute’.”

After the game on the 5th (6th Japan time), Dodgers manager Dave Roberts offered his view that Shohei Ohtani’s “personality changes depending on whether he’s feeling good or bad physically.” On 5ch, the comment sparked mixed reactions — some joked about a “Good Ohtani” and “Bad Ohtani” two-way duality, others defended him with “that’s true of anyone,” while others pointed to his past behavior and took a harsher view, saying “his true colors are just showing.”

    Re: #114
I don't think my personality changes… am I just special?

    Background and Points of Debate

Manager Roberts’ comment came amid Ohtani’s ongoing return to two-way (pitching and hitting) game action, and appears to mean that his focus and demeanor tend to shift when he’s not feeling well physically. The thread split over whether to read this as “a natural human reaction anyone would have” or as “a backlash against expecting athletes to be saints.” Ohtani’s public image has historically been built on wholesome anecdotes like picking up trash and showing consideration for opposing players, and as a counter-reaction to that, some posts linked this comment to the idea that “the mask has finally slipped.” However, some of these posts were based on unsourced hearsay or references to footage that couldn’t be verified, and it’s worth noting that the original article is simply about Roberts commenting on the degree of Ohtani’s physical recovery. Some also argued that the controversy over his emotional ups and downs says less about Ohtani’s personal character than about the media and public’s tendency to project an overly saintly image onto athletes — a perspective that can’t be gleaned from the original article alone, and is unique to the thread’s discussion.

  • New Condo Sales Slow Even in Tokyo’s 23 Wards as Rising Rates and Soaring Prices Weigh

In the Tokyo metro area’s new condominium market, the share of properties that developers rated as “selling well” has fallen to 29%, down 9 points from a year earlier, according to a survey by real estate advisory firm Total Brain. The firm says rising mortgage rates and soaring prices are making buyers more cautious. I've heard of flippers walking away from their deposit when the post-purchase drop exceeds the deposit amount — that makes sense, it's rational. But apparently there are also actual homebuyers who forfeit their deposit just because they feel cheated after seeing a unit with the same layout listed cheaper later.

When we were buying, it was the same thing day after day — 'With your income, you could easily afford this condo!'

    Background and Key Points

This survey was compiled by Nikkei MJ, the distribution-focused trade paper of the Nikkei Group, covering first-phase sales of new condominiums launched by roughly 60 developers across Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba. It’s easy to misread the “selling well” rating — it’s a relative assessment based on developers’ own self-reporting, not a sign that prices themselves have fallen. The “50-year joint mortgage” that came up in the thread is, in reality, a product offered conditionally to people like large-company employees, not something the young generation at large can freely take out, as some commenters pointed out. Meanwhile, the decline in bulk purchases by wealthy Chinese buyers is said to stem from tighter capital controls in China, with some seeing investors from other countries stepping in to fill the gap. The way price increases have spread to suburban cities in Saitama and Kanagawa appears to reflect a combination of supply constraints in central Tokyo and investment capital that flowed in during the low-interest-rate era.

  • New Chiikawa Character Looks Just Like Kura Sushi’s President, Fans Buzz — Creator Stays Silent

The face of the “kanpyō roll enemy” character who appeared in a new Chiikawa episode has been pointed out on 5channel as resembling the president of the conveyor-belt sushi chain Kura Sushi. There was previously a Chiikawa x Kura Sushi collaboration that got cancelled after trouble over how a store handled things, and speculation is spreading that this episode might be a dig at that incident. Thread opinion is split between it being mere coincidence and it being the creator’s intentional jab, and creator Nagano has made no specific comment on the matter.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The backdrop to this thread is a Chiikawa x Kura Sushi collaboration reportedly in the works, which ended up cancelled after trouble over how a store handled things (see replies 35, 53). Thread opinion split between seeing this episode as a pointed jab referencing that incident and dismissing it as pure coincidence. That said, the claim that the “kanpyō roll enemy” character’s face resembles a real person is ultimately just fans’ subjective impression, and neither creator Nagano nor the production side has issued any official statement or explanation of intent (see reply 11). It’s also worth noting that fictional character designs happening to resemble real people is not unusual in itself, and there is currently no basis for concluding this was a deliberate dig.

  • “Do I Smell?” Why Perfectionists Can’t Stop Worrying About Their Own Body Odor — and How to Cope

An Asahi Shimbun article about people who suffer from the conviction that they smell bad drew a wave of responses on 5ch’s News Express+ board. The piece is based on an interview with Professor Kenji Shimizu of Hiroshima International University and examines the psychology behind believing “I smell” even when there’s little to no actual odor. The thread quickly filled with personal stories about age-related body odor and sweat smells, along with tips on laundry tricks and antiperspirants — but pointed remarks that “you can’t smell your own odor” and jabs at other people’s body odor soon took over, turning what should have been a serious topic into a free-for-all about who stinks.

    Posted 9/6 (Sun) 8:30 AM

    Asahi Shimbun

Our bodies give off odors. Even when there’s actually no smell — or only a faint one — some people become convinced “I smell bad” and suffer deeply over it. How should those affected, and the people around them, deal with this? We spoke with Kenji Shimizu, a professor at Hiroshima International University specializing in clinical psychology.

To put it in terms everyone can picture: it's like puff pastry.

But well… most Japanese people have the dry, flaky earwax type, so if yours is wet…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Olfactory reference syndrome (fear of one’s own body odor) is a condition in which someone becomes strongly convinced they smell bad — despite having little or no actual odor — to the point that it disrupts their relationships with others; it has been linked to perfectionist personality traits and strong social anxiety. The original article is an expert interview focused on this psychological angle, but the thread’s focus drifted, centering instead on coping tips and personal anecdotes about people who genuinely do smell. While plenty of advice piled up about improving age-related odor and damp-laundry smell through laundry techniques and antiperspirants, neither the article nor the thread spent much time on the fact that armpit odor (wakiga) is largely genetic and often can’t be solved through personal effort alone. The point that “it’s hard to notice your own smell” is considered medically valid, and the fact that people around you rarely point it out directly is thought to be one reason the anxiety drags on for those affected.

  • Adventurer YouTuber Yutabon backs out of Todai entrance exam — 5ch: ‘Does he even know the difference between a university and a research lab?’

YouTuber “Adventurer Yutabon” (17) announced on his X (formerly Twitter) account that he is withdrawing from the University of Tokyo entrance exam after a Todai professor allegedly made a discriminatory remark about “feeling the horror of genetic factors,” saying he wants to “use it as a cautionary example.” On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ thread, though, the declaration itself drew less attention than doubts over whether he ever had the academic ability to sit the exam in the first place. Longstanding suspicions that the posts are actually written by his father rather than Yutabon himself also resurfaced, and the discussion drifted away from criticizing the Todai professor and toward debating Yutabon’s own abilities and the authenticity of his posts.

Given his general academic history and current situation, the probability of Yutabon getting into the University of Tokyo (Todai) from here is extremely low (close to 0%) — realistically, it's next to impossible.

Main factors behind this: Academic history — he was out of school for a long stretch starting in elementary school, returning to class in the second term of ninth grade. He later failed the general entrance exam for public high school and enrolled in a correspondence high school (Japan Airlines High School). [1]

High school equivalency exam: In 2024 he took the Upper Secondary School Equivalency Examination and passed most of the main subjects, but that only certifies an equivalent to a high school diploma — it's a world away from the level needed to sit and pass the entrance exam for Todai, Japan's most competitive university (which demands enormous exam prep from basics through advanced material, plus second-stage exam prep). [1]

Current activities: while enrolled at a correspondence high school, he's putting his energy into other interests like boxing and studying abroad.
Getting into Todai requires years of intense exam prep and top-tier grades, competing against the best students in the country.
Given his current path and study habits, he's not in a position to be aiming for that, so the probability is considered essentially zero.

Don't worry, I don't know the first thing about Yutabon.
But since you guys are calling him a 'net-right-winger' (netouyo, online right-wing slang), I guess he must've gotten recruited by the righty crowd

Background and Key Points of This Story

Yutabon has been in the public eye since his elementary school days, when he chose not to attend school, and there’s a long history of people pointing out that his father is deeply involved in the content he posts. This latest post reignited that same longstanding suspicion — that it’s his father, not Yutabon himself, doing the writing. There’s also the fact that while he passed several subjects of the high school equivalency exam in 2024, he had previously failed the general entrance exam for public high school, and that gap between his track record and the extremely high bar of the Todai entrance exam fueled the view that he likely never had a realistic shot at passing in the first place. It should be noted that neither the professor’s real name nor the full text of the alleged discriminatory remark was presented in the thread, so the truth of that claim itself has not been verified.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Adventurer Yutabon (17): ‘I’m withdrawing from the Todai entrance exam… I want to use it as a cautionary example’.”

  • Customer: “Nitori Told Me My Sofa’s 5-Year Warranty Doesn’t Cover Normal Wear and Tear”

A customer who bought a sofa from Nitori went viral on social media after being refused an exchange, told that “normal wear and tear isn’t covered” despite the sofa coming with a 5-year warranty — and the story sparked a lively discussion on 5ch. The thread expanded into a broader debate about what furniture and appliance warranties actually cover in the first place, with posters pointing out that “manufacturing defects” and “damage within the warranty period” are two different things, and sharing real-world examples of warranty claims for PCs and Iris Ohyama appliances. The discussion also turned up accounts of Nitori mattresses being refused by moving companies due to their internal structure, making for a thread packed with practical knowledge about furniture warranties and shipping.

If a bed frame or sofa leg breaks when it shouldn't after just 5 years of use, that'd count as a defective product, wouldn't it?
    10AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:44
    Well, obviously.
The warranty's meant for stuff like a leg snapping or the bottom tearing out, not "the cushion sagged after 5 years so replace it." That'd never fly.
If they allowed that, you could keep every piece of furniture permanently like-new.

My floor chair that I've used for 3 years is falling apart too.
Too much hassle to replace it.
Or rather, too much hassle to get rid of the old one.

PC warranties have never once actually worked for me.

It's always either "this is expected wear and tear, so it's not covered" or "this is sudden accidental damage, so it's not covered."
So what's the point of the 3-year warranty then?
    28AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:51
    Re: #21
BTO shops probably rake in cash off warranties like that.
Mine stopped breaking once I started building my own PCs.

If it breaks under normal use, that's covered.

"You can use it normally for this period" — that's literally what the warranty means.
    27AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:51
Manufacturing defects usually show up within about a year, which is probably why small appliances and furniture typically get a 1-year warranty.
For furniture with a 5- or 10-year warranty, saying "it's just a manufacturing defect" doesn't cut it.
Though sometimes those long warranties only cover the main structural frame.
    93AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:28
    Re: #27
A manufacturing defect and the warranty period are two separate things.
Even without a warranty, you can still get a refund or exchange for a manufacturing defect.

    34AnonymousSep 6, 2026 12:53
Breakage or fractures from normal use would probably be covered, but discoloration, wear, warping from temperature changes, loose parts — that's all just aging, so no way that's covered.

The flat-pack bookshelf with casters I bought at Cainz sagged and warped in the middle after about a month of holding CDs and DVDs.

Even the expensive ones mostly have hollow shelf boards.
That's why I buy plywood at the home center and cut it to size to use as shelf boards instead.

I put a 5-year warranty on my Iris Ohyama washing machine. Contacted the warranty company at the end of the month, heard back around the 7th of the next month, then summer break hit, and I was told the repair would happen on the 27th.
The actual repair work was outsourced to Sharp's repair division.

What happens to the very first buyer, then? Maybe it's fine because if something goes wrong on that first delivery to their home, they can return it as a manufacturing defect. Or maybe it's fine brand new, but the risk of it breaking during a later move goes way up once it's been used.

It's just the laws of physics — it's going to sag no matter what. If you don't want that, put something on top before you sit.

    Re: #72
When you buy it, it gets compressed for delivery to your home.
Once you uncompress it after that, it can never be compressed again — so it can't be moved out either.

Doesn't it arrive compressed? I'd guess it can't be moved afterward because you can't recompress it while keeping the internal structure intact.

That's what you get for buying the cheap one.
I've had an ¥80,000-ish Nitori couch for about 2 years now with zero problems.
For stuff you set up once and rarely replace, it's worth spending a bit more — same goes for fridges and washing machines.
    101AnonymousSep 6, 2026 13:33
The floor under a washing machine in a rental always ends up dented or marked with foot prints.
When you move out, shady management companies like Sekisui will try to con you by saying "we'll need to replace the flooring" and bill you for it.
But legally that's recognized as ordinary wear and tear, so you don't have to pay — good to keep in mind.
They'll milk ignorant tenants for everything they've got. Japan really is a country built on scams.

    Re: #101
I wonder how it'd go nowadays if it's cigarette smoke damage and they say "we'll need to replace the flooring." Back in the day, smoking indoors was just normal, so it probably would've counted as ordinary wear and tear.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

As a general industry standard, furniture warranties are built to cover manufacturer-caused defects and damage that shouldn’t occur under normal use (a leg snapping, the bottom falling out, etc.), while excluding ordinary wear and tear like discoloration or cushion sagging. The thread’s discussion centered on that line, with posters noting that “manufacturing defects” and “failures within the warranty period” are different things, and drawing parallels to how PC BTO warranties and electronics retailers’ extended warranties operate the same way. At the same time, the gap between that industry standard and the consumer expectation that “if you’re advertising a 5-year warranty, it should cover wear and tear too” is what sparked this whole controversy. The thread also branched into some useful practical tidbits about furniture and housing: Nitori mattresses reportedly can’t be recompressed once unpacked, so movers sometimes refuse to transport them, and dents left in flooring by a washing machine should count as ordinary wear and tear when moving out of a rental, meaning tenants shouldn’t have to pay restoration costs for it.

※This article was compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyō G) thread “Customer: “My Nitori sofa wore out after 5 years. Despite the 5-year warranty, I was told wear and tear isn’t covered”.”
