  • Child Obesity and Poverty: 5ch Says “Gummies Are Surprisingly Bad Value”

An Asahi Shimbun report featured a doctor’s observation that child obesity is deeply tied to “poverty.” The article’s claim that some kids get by on snacks and sweet buns instead of proper meals sparked a 5ch debate that started with a basic question: is candy really cheaper than rice and vegetables? Some pushed back, arguing vegetables are the better deal once you compare them gram-for-gram or calorie-for-calorie, while others shared their own experience of being forced to rely on pasta and sweet buns as fresh food like rice and napa cabbage kept getting pricier. The thread ended up highlighting just how hard it is to draw a simple line between poverty and poor eating habits.

An essential perspective when thinking about child obesity, it’s said, is its connection to “poverty.”

Genuine question for anyone who really knows this stuff:
if poverty increases, does that mean less work for small and mid-size sash (window frame) manufacturers out in the countryside? Do they go under?

Once you fall into real poverty, the idea of cooking your own meals doesn't even occur to you.
It's normal for a household not to even own a pot, kettle, or kitchen knife.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Relative child poverty has long been recognized as an issue in Japan too, and disordered eating habits are known to show up as both weight gain and weight loss. The Asahi Shimbun report behind this article cites a doctor’s observation that kids from low-income households tend to lean on cheap snacks and processed food rather than vegetables or rice. The thread split over how to read the pricing: is candy really cheaper than rice and vegetables? Some pushed back, noting vegetables are more efficient gram-for-gram or calorie-for-calorie, while others pointed out that once you factor in actual shelf prices and the hassle of cooking, sweet buns can feel like the “quick and cheap” option for some households — both views hold a grain of truth. One reply also brought up the U.S. food stamp (SNAP) program’s restrictions on certain purchases; worth noting as extra context not covered in the original article, since the link between poverty and diet quality is a policy issue overseas as well.

  • The Brutal Life Gap at 40: 5ch Thread — “I’ve Got 800 Million Yen and It Still Feels Empty”

A thread on 5ch’s “Morning Musume” board (which in practice tends to attract general chit-chat threads with nothing to do with the idol group) sparked discussion about the stark “gap” in life outcomes among people in their 40s. It started with a post noting that some people marry, build families, and live steady lives, while others stay single, still absorbed in their hobbies — and replies poured in citing hard numbers, like “My assets hit 800 million yen and it still feels empty” and “I’m a full-time employee but only take home 110,000 yen a month.” The discussion eventually spiraled into a clash over whether having a family counts as “stability” or a “liability,” and into the social backdrop facing Japan’s “employment ice age” generation.

    1AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:17
Some guys are cruising through their 40s just fine — married, bought a house, raising kids — while others are still basically middle schoolers who do nothing but play games, watch anime, and jerk off. It's a brutal age for comparing notes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Despite its name, the “Morning Musume” board is mostly used for late-night chit-chat threads that have nothing to do with the idol group, and this thread was no exception, unfolding as a discussion on life philosophy unrelated to any specific idol. The “employment ice age generation” mentioned in the thread refers to the cohort that entered the job market from the late 1990s through the early 2000s, when new-graduate hiring collapsed — a group still said to be affected today through higher rates of non-regular employment. Some posts pointed to labor market reforms as a contributing factor, but that reflects individual opinions from a handful of posts rather than an established causal fact. The discussion tends to get framed around a “family: liability or stability?” divide, but the replies also raised cases of married people struggling financially and single people with assets who still feel empty — suggesting the reality can’t be fully explained by a simple married/single binary.

On 5ch, threads gathered a wide range of reactions — skepticism about that “30%” figure, discomfort with the very phrase “joke about it,” theories on why men in their 20s would even have ED (with porn and masturbation habits often blamed), and personal accounts of online medical consultations.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, ED treatment drugs previously required a doctor’s prescription, but now “Cialis” can be bought without one, through pharmacist-assisted, face-to-face sales at pharmacies. It’s easy to overlook that this isn’t purely a self-service purchase — a consultation at the pharmacy counter is still required. What split opinion in the thread was the reliability of the survey figure claiming that over 30% of men in their 20s have been teased about ED, with many voicing skepticism that it doesn’t match their own sense of reality, while plenty of others shared personal accounts blaming porn habits, masturbation habits, or the nervousness of visiting brothels. The article’s claim that “roughly 1 in 2 men has ED” was also met with surprise.

    Background and Talking Points

“Tell me a useful website” threads are a recurring staple on 5ch, known for pulling in everything from everyday life tips to software and gadget tricks. Notably, several of the links shared in this thread point to Web Archive snapshots — worth keeping in mind, since some of the original sites have already been shut down or deleted and can now only be viewed in archived form. There was also a post asking how to get hold of old apps no longer available for download, and even the person answering admitted they weren’t entirely sure of the details. The recommended sites reflect individual posters’ personal experience only and haven’t been vetted by any moderator or expert. Anyone planning to actually use them should check the update dates and the reliability of the source for themselves.

  • Xbox’s Hail-Mary Turnaround Plan Splits Opinion — 5ch: “Japanese Third-Parties Are All Thriving Anyway”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Hardware/Industry (Console War)” board floating a hypothetical Xbox reform plan: “cut Game Pass prices,” “bring back exclusive titles,” “end day-one Call of Duty releases,” and “introduce time limits on the cloud version.” Rather than debating the merits of the proposal itself, the thread spiraled into a battle over Xbox’s MAU (monthly active user) numbers, with posters citing strong earnings from Japanese publishers like Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo to counter with “Japanese third-parties are thriving even without Game Pass” — a classic console-war slugfest.

The rising running costs are no joke

Though technically it's not ending the service, it's switching to a pay-per-use model

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Comparing MAU (monthly active users) figures is a classic case where numbers take on a life of their own once different counting methods are involved. The “over 500 million” figure for Xbox cited in the thread includes Windows and PC Game Pass users, so it rests on different assumptions than console-only usage figures. Meanwhile, the strong earnings from Capcom, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo are all results each company has already reported for fiscal periods from March 2026 onward — but that alone doesn’t prove a causal link between having (or not having) Game Pass distribution and business performance. The thread’s real fault line is which factor to prioritize — “Japanese third-parties thriving independent of Game Pass” versus “the scale of Xbox’s ecosystem” — and it’s worth noting both sides are cherry-picking only the facts that support their argument.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Console War)) thread “Xbox Asha: “Cut Game Pass prices! Bring back exclusives! Drop CoD day-one! Time-limit the cloud version!”“

  • Xbox Officially Admits Profit Margins Are ‘1/3 to 1/10’ of Rivals, Game Pass Growth Stalls Too

In July 2026, Microsoft revealed in its official blog post “Resetting Xbox” that some of its gaming investments are losing 64 cents for every dollar spent, and that its profit margins remain at just one-third to one-tenth of those of its competitors. Even after launching its ninth-generation console, the installed base has kept shrinking, and while the company pinned its hopes on Game Pass and a multiplatform strategy, growth has fallen short of expectations. Following this announcement, users on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board debated the causes behind sluggish console sales, whether Game Pass is actually profitable, and whether Xbox should bring back exclusive titles.

“We’ve also learned that we aren’t the best home for every type of studio. Typically, for every dollar Xbox invests, we lose 64 cents.”

“Right now, our business isn’t healthy. Our profit margins are only about a third to a tenth of what comparable platform and publishing businesses see.

With the launch of our ninth-generation console, our installed base shrank while our cost structure grew. In pursuit of growth, we bet on Game Pass, multiplatform releases, and a broader content portfolio.

    Just 'continuing' isn't enough.
Xbox's packaged-game market is already wiped out, so they'd need to say they're doubling down on reviving it to win over the physical-media crowd.
As it stands, third parties tend to skip discs for download-only releases, retailers won't stock them, and even Microsoft's own titles ship as 'key discs' with no actual game data on them.
That's not going to convince the people shouting 'no disc, no buy.'
    46AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:29
Bringing back exclusives is only natural. Game consoles are built on the back of exclusive titles. If you go multiplatform just to chase quick cash, the whole platform collapses. If they're giving up on exclusives, they might as well just pull out of hardware entirely (´・ω・`)

Obviously because the State of Play was garbage 😣

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This admission comes from “Resetting Xbox,” a document Microsoft itself posted on its official site in July 2026, in which the company’s own leadership acknowledged the struggles of its hardware business. In the thread, opinions split between those who blamed the low profit margins on going multiplatform and raising Game Pass prices, and those who argued that Microsoft as a whole remains hugely profitable and has no reason to worry about pulling out. Some also pointed out that ‘profit margin’ can be improved simply through layoffs or a shrunken game lineup, sparking discussion about the danger of judging a business’s health by margin alone. While some users called for a return to exclusive titles, others noted that Xbox never really had many exclusives to begin with, leaving many skeptical that any turnaround plan would actually work.

  • That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: ‘2000-Year Loop’ Twist Has 5ch Live-Reaction Thread Crying ‘This Is Hell’

In the anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Chloe and Hinata time-leap 2000 years into the past, repeating a loop while keeping their consciousness intact until the sealed Chronoa awakens. On 5ch’s live-reaction thread, some said “staying sane through 2000 years is worse hell than Re:Zero’s Subaru,” while others pointed out that the series already features characters like the True Dragons and the Primordials who live far longer than 2000 years, and that Awakened Heroes also stop aging — so the number actually fits the story’s own timeline, splitting opinion. Fans who’ve read the source material also weighed in on how Chloe and Hinata’s souls and bodies are being handled, the power ranking between the True Dragons and the Primordials, and how the Shion vs. Razul fight is being treated.

Pretty sure it was King Gazel who said you're free to call yourself a hero, but once you do, you get dragged into a hero's karma.

    That'd be Masayuki.
    11AnonymousSep 6, 2026 01:16
So does that mean Chloe technically has two souls existing at once — from when she was born on Earth until she got warped over?
They seem to rule out parallel worlds, but if it's a separate world, could a parallel soul still exist there?

Maybe there's some kind of holding space where a soul that's been sent over waits temporarily.
And when time rewinds, that space rewinds along with it.
    25AnonymousSep 6, 2026 04:52
Looping 2000 years while staying fully conscious sounds like flat-out hell, worse than Subaru from Re:Zero…
Couldn't they have picked a slightly more realistic number of years?
    27AnonymousSep 6, 2026 05:07
    Re: #25
This series already has plenty of nonhuman characters who've lived way longer than 2000 years anyway.
And apparently even humans stop aging once they become Awakened Heroes, so it's probably a number chosen to balance against Granbell too.

She really is a genuinely good person — she founded a religion to protect humanity, and it was someone else who twisted the doctrine into monster-persecution.

Wouldn't the 'hell level' be different for a long-lived race versus someone who used to be Japanese, looping again like that?

I get where you're coming from, but I think the strong ones in this world are mentally far tougher than people in reality.
Realistically, Chloe needed to spend a good number of years before she and Leon even got transported over.
Stuff like Veldora destroying Luminous's capital lines up with roughly 2000 years ago, so I think that number was actually thought through pretty carefully.
    35AnonymousSep 6, 2026 05:52
Grown-up Chloe is way too pretty.

They said two versions of the same person can't exist in the same space-time — but since Hinata died and got sent back 2000 years along with Chloe, wouldn't whichever consciousness (Chloe's or Hinata's) is inside present-day Chronoa come back?
    37AnonymousSep 6, 2026 06:02
    Re: #35
Haven't read the source material, but I'd guess once she wakes up they'll put Hinata's soul back into Hinata's body and revive her.
If so, her mind would've matured roughly 2000 years' worth by the time she's revived.
    38AnonymousSep 6, 2026 06:24
Even if she's revived, isn't there no body to put her in?
Yuuki's got Chloe's body, but there's no body for Hinata.
    78AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:20
    Re: #38
As for a body, Rimuru's got plenty of Material Bodies stocked up, and he can make more.
He's already given physical bodies to Veldora, Ifrit, the Primordials, and other demons.
Hinata's a saint, and after 2000 years she's probably become a spiritual life-form like the elementals and demons.

    Re: #43
There seem to be all sorts of theories floating around, but basically it's either the buildup of negative emotion from looping over and over,
or Chronoa's will unconsciously trying to protect the sleeping consciousness/souls of Chloe and Hinata,
or some combination of the above.
    47AnonymousSep 6, 2026 06:55

There were bits that bugged me, but I was watching along thinking 'this is put together pretty carefully for a Narou series' (Narou = the web-novel site/genre known for formulaic isekai stories)… and then they suddenly kick off a time-loop arc. Kind of a bummer.

It's not really that sudden, though.
Ramiris already said, back at the Spirits' Den, that the thing possessing Chloe came from the future, and in the side story Noir saw right through the fact that Shizu's mask transcended time.

    Re: #109
    Same thought here.
Not sure if it's just that Chloe's mental fortitude is freakishly strong, or if some kind of power/authority is propping her up.
    115AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:47
    Re: #109 Re: #111
Maybe she really is cracking and piling up negative emotions, but it's all draining into Chronoa, which is what lets Chloe stay sane.
Or the other way around — maybe Chronoa's absorbed so much of it that it's turned into an embodiment of evil. Just speculating.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime started out as a popular web novel, and the anime is currently adapting a later part of the source material — the time-leap episode tied to Yuuki and Hinata. The thread’s disagreement centered on two main points. First was the weight of the ‘loop 2000 years while staying fully conscious’ setup: some invoked Re:Zero and called it ‘hell,’ while others countered that the series already has plenty of characters — like the True Dragons and the Primordials — who’ve lived far longer than 2000 years, and that since Awakened Heroes also stop aging, the number actually matches the story’s own timescale, offering a defense of the choice. Second was how Chloe and Hinata’s souls and bodies are being handled: the rule that two souls can’t exist in the same space-time at once, and the true identity of the sealed Chronoa (whether it holds Chloe’s or Hinata’s consciousness), were hard to follow for those who haven’t read the source material. Some also pointed out that earlier remarks from Ramiris and Noir had already hinted at the time-leap, suggesting it was foreshadowed rather than out of nowhere. Note that all of this is fan speculation about in-story lore, not confirmed information.

  • Members Who Ended Up in Morning Musume. Without Even Wanting To Join Are Trending — 5ch: ‘A Huge Step Up From Wanting Angerme’

A thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board asked which members had wanted to join Morning Musume. but ended up assigned to a different group instead. The thread kicked off with names like Goto Hana, Kawashima Mifu, Onoda Saaya, and Tanimoto Ami already on the table, and replies brought up the reverse case of Okamura Homare, who scored a “huge promotion” from wanting Angerme to landing in Morning Musume., as well as the oft-repeated story that Tanaka Reina and Michishige Sayumi once said they “wanted to be in Morning Musume., not just a celebrity.” At the same time, some posters questioned how much of this “who wanted what” talk is actually based on the members’ own words versus just fan speculation, so the discussion didn’t stay a simple list of names.

Yuriya said recently that she wanted to join Tsubaki Factory

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s not unusual in Hello! Project for the group someone hoped for at audition time to not match where they actually get assigned. Successful applicants go through a trainee period, and it’s ultimately up to the agency whether they end up in Morning Musume., Angerme, Juice=Juice, or elsewhere — there’s no guarantee your first choice goes through. The case of Okamura Homare (wanted Angerme → ended up in Morning Musume.) raised in the thread is a classic example of this, and the story that Tanaka Reina and Michishige Sayumi once said they “wanted to be in Morning Musume., not just a celebrity” is an anecdote that keeps getting repeated within Hello! Project fandom. That said, as post #57 points out, it’s worth noting that many of these “who wanted what” stories circulate without it being clear whether they’re the members’ own official statements or just fan hearsay and speculation — and as post #35 also notes, “the member you admire” and “the group you wanted to join” are separate things that shouldn’t be conflated.

Yuka Miyazaki, who served as the first-generation leader of Hello! Commenters also compared her stance to that of fellow former first-generation leaders Karin Miyamoto and Ayaka Wada.

Probably because there's so much group work that if she reported watching all of it, there'd be no end to it.
On the flip side, Miyazaki figures Ebata/Kawashima and Inoue/Danbara's appearances were one-offs, so their names come up easily.
She didn't react to Haramichan (a popular street pianist) because she thinks Arisawa's violin work with her is still ongoing.
Guess that means Arisawa is a threat to Miyazaki.

Even Miyamoto seems to have forgotten they're active together as "Yumeria."

This is the right move — cozying up to whatever's popular.

It's not that she started sucking up once they got popular — she's been consistent since before they made it big.

Just checked X — she cunningly got the calendar order deadline wrong.

So she's a cunning-but-cute tanuki who deliberately lets the old-timer fans jump in to correct her, huh.
    61AnonymousSep 6, 2026 11:22
Never really stanned Yuka-nyan, but since she's self-aware that she's a klutzy "ponkotsu ponpoko" tanuki (a pun on "klutzy" and the tanuki's belly-drumming sound), I can't bring myself to dislike her.

If Tomoko Kanazawa and Manaka Inaba were still in the current Juice=Juice lineup, they'd definitely be popular members.

    Background and Discussion Points

The phrase “Ebami and Reiruru” in the quoted post is an abbreviation used among Hello! Project fans, apparently combining the nicknames of current members. In Hello! Project, the number of days since joining is often discussed as a marker of tenure, and the day-count comparisons shown in the thread — starting with Akari Uemura’s 4,127 days — are one example of this. Miyazaki has already stepped back from the front lines, but she continues to post about her juniors’ activities, a different situation from that of active members who carry the weight of the group’s fortunes. In the thread, opinions were split between those who saw the post as a pure expression of affection for her juniors and those who viewed it as a calculated message timed alongside a subsequent promotional post for her personal calendar; which is closer to the truth cannot be determined from the post alone. It should also be noted that evaluations of other former first-generation leaders vary from person to person, and the text does not make clear what standard those evaluations are based on.

  • Smartphone bills up 5% in six months to ¥4,198/month — 5ch: ‘If you’re broke, it’s Japan Communications or Rakuten, pick one’

A July survey by MM Research Institute found that the average monthly smartphone fee — combining main brands and sub-brands from the four major carriers including NTT Docomo and KDDI — came to ¥4,198, up 5% from six months earlier. The increase reflects price hikes carriers have been rolling out across their lineups. The thread debated why people still stick with the major carriers: some cited the hassle of switching and worries about network quality, while others reported having already jumped ship to Japan Communications SIM or Rakuten Mobile. Some users looked back on past government-led efforts to cut mobile fees and questioned why the burden keeps growing on consumers year after year.

Monthly smartphone fees are climbing. According to a July survey by MM Research Institute (Minato, Tokyo), the average monthly fee across main brands and sub-brands came to ¥4,198, up 5% from six months earlier. Price hikes being rolled out by carriers across the board are spreading through the market.

An online survey of roughly 23,000 people asked about the main brands and low-cost sub-brands of NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. Monthly fees, including data…(continues in the paid edition, 907 characters remaining)

People still paying big money to stick with the Big 3 carriers… isn't that just folks who don't know how to switch to a sub-brand, or don't even know sub-brands exist?
    14AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:23
    Re: #4
That's heavy data users and corporate accounts. It's precisely because that segment exists that sub-brands can exist in the first place — if they vanished, the sub-brands would just turn into full-price carriers themselves.
    54AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:43
    Re: #4
Plenty of people know sub-brands exist but find switching a hassle, worry call/data quality will drop, or balk at the setup cost even though the savings would pay it back quickly.

    Re: #4
I'd consider it if there were a carrier around here with its own antennas, but I'm not so hard up that I need to move house over it, so I stick with one of the Big 3. Got a problem with that?
    17AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:26
Turns out 'Gaasuu's' (nickname for former PM Suga) mobile fee cut policy was pointless after all.
The old days were better — free phones, or a 3-year lock-in in exchange for dirt-cheap rates.
Why does it keep tilting against consumers year after year?

That's the root of all evil — they killed off the ¥1 lump-sum iPhone deals we used to get.

    Re: #17
Back when you had MNP cashback plus carrier discounts, the latest model was effectively ¥30k plus ¥3,000-something a month — that was when there was real competition.
Even Docomo was definitely faster back then than it is now.

I switched my phone to Rakuten Mobile.

    Cancelled my home fiber line,
    popped the SIM
    into a router instead,
    and now it's just ¥3,250 a month.

That's literally me — I also keep a cheap line just for calls, so I'm juggling two phones, which is annoying, but…

Whatever people say about them, if you're broke it's really just a choice between Japan Communications SIM and Rakuten Mobile.

Broke as I am, I run Japan Communications (1GB) plus Rakuten Mobile 30GB (via a shareholder perk).

    Go get 'em, Rakuten —
take down the 'Three Carrier Brothers' (riffing on the novelty song 'Dango Three Brothers,' used here as slang for the Big 3 carriers).

Having people use it for ¥0 is its own problem, though…
    53AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:43
Me, even after switching to a smartphone I've kept my old garakei/garaho-era phone plan (¥1,370/month),
and I buy a ¥1,000 data pack about once a month, so it works out to effectively ¥2,370/month.
I basically only use Wi-Fi for anything data-heavy anyway.

If it's just data there are cheaper budget plans out there, but for work I also need high-quality calls, so I can't cut ties with Docomo.
    68AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:52
    Re: #66
If it's high-quality calls you need, Japan Communications would do fine too, wouldn't it?
    69AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:52
I'm paying like 6,000-7,000 yen with Docomo —
if I switch to somewhere cheaper, does the connection speed and how easily it connects stay about the same?
    72AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:56
    Re: #69
If you're heavy on data, a proper carrier might be better. But if it's mainly calls, budget SIMs still run on the Big 3's own network anyway, so I'd say there's not much difference from the original carrier.
    98AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:17
    Re: #69
Even counting Docomo and Rakuten in, it's bottom-tier quality.
    71AnonymousSep 6, 2026 08:56

In places like Kawasaki or Funabashi you can still at least get au roaming though lol

    147AnonymousSep 6, 2026 09:51
My OCN Mobile ONE, even with unlimited calls added on, comes to under ¥2,000.
    But it doesn't support eSIM,
so what am I supposed to do going forward?
    162AnonymousSep 6, 2026 10:06
    Re: #147
Same here — OCN 3GB (¥700) + unlimited calls (¥1,300) comes to about ¥2,000, and since I've got OCN Fiber at home I never use up the 3GB, so it rolls over each month to 6GB total, and I still don't use it all.
With povo as a backup line on top of that, zero problems lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This time’s average of ¥4,198 is a figure calculated by combining the main brands of NTT Docomo, KDDI, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile with sub-brands such as ahamo, povo and UQ Mobile, so it’s worth keeping in mind that individual experience can diverge from this depending on one’s contracted data allowance and calling plan. Given that fees had once come down following the government-led push for price cuts around 2021, this latest rise is easy to read as things ‘returning to square one.’ Where the thread split was over whether the reasons people still stick with the major carriers reflect being ‘digitally naive people who don’t know how to switch,’ or a ‘rational choice weighing call quality and hassle against cost’ — circumstances that can’t be explained by a simple fee comparison alone.
