Togashi Yoshihiro’s Hunter x Hunter Wraps Its 10-Week Run Right on Schedule — Next Chapter’s Release Date Unknown

The story

Togashi Yoshihiro’s Hunter x Hunter went on hiatus in the September 7 issue of Jump (2026 issue 41), wrapping up its ten-week run of consecutive chapters exactly as most fans predicted. No date has been given for when it’ll return. This installment once again followed Kurapika, the Phantom Troupe, and Gon and Killua, but concerns that this could turn into another extended hiatus remain strong. On the thread, criticism that “only this author gets away with taking breaks like this” collided with defenses like “at least he’s still drawing” and “still faster than Vagabond,” and the discussion spiraled out into the industry’s whole hiatus culture.

2026.09.07

The consecutive serialization of Togashi Yoshihiro’s manga Hunter x Hunter came to an end with the September 7 (Monday) issue of Weekly Shonen Jump 2026 issue 41 (Shueisha).

As most fans had predicted beforehand, it wrapped up after a ten-week consecutive run.

Just make it a novel already — this isn't manga anymore.

Re: #5
It's totally manga. There's no way you could understand how the Fourth Prince's ability actually works from text alone.
7AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:38
If chapter 427's already done, why not just publish up to there? Do it like the One Punch Man original — release chapters whenever they're finished.

Re: #7
It's probably paced around finishing one whole tankobon volume at a time — finish a volume's worth → serialize it in Jump → go on hiatus to work on the volume release and the next batch → publish again once it's all ready. Seems to be the cycle.

I figured it'd be like Gon in a coma with Killua nursing him the whole time, and meanwhile, Kurapika…! But everyone just went back to their normal lives in the end. Guess everyone but the Troupe's living peacefully.

Re: #16
That 'chapter' had Gon get healed and revived by Killua's sister, then Killua heads off to travel with her, so he and Gon part ways for a while — and Gon goes straight from there to meet and talk with Ging. That's where it ends. The Troupe, meanwhile, is on the same ship right now desperately hunting for Hisoka.

When I heard it was continuing after the Election arc ended, I thought 'are you serious?' — but even so, the whole 'hunt Beyond' storyline had me hyped. Turns out it should've just ended there. What a crappy manga.

Re: #22
I was genuinely hyped when the Demon World Tournament kicked off (a nod to Togashi's earlier series Yu Yu Hakusho).
27AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:46
This is exactly why it's fallen off — because everyone keeps letting him get away with this.

Re: #27
A mangaka friend of mine laughed bitterly and said 'everyone's taken a page from Togashi's book.' Taking long breaks once you're a hit was unthinkable back in Akira Toriyama's day, but Togashi paved the way (as awful as that is).

This is exactly why hearing 'it's back in serialization' doesn't make me want to read it. There are already way too many characters to keep track of, and then after writing a bit it goes right back into a long hiatus. I don't have it in me to relearn everyone again, so I've lost the will to read it too.
34AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:48
Re: #32
Just wait till it's finished and read it all in one go.
42AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:50
They really need to make being a mangaka a licensed profession — if you act this selfishly, revoke the license and stop you from drawing manga.
148AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:13
Re: #42
They should make being a reader a licensed profession too — revoke the license of anyone the publishers or mangaka don't want reading their work, so their brains can never comprehend manga or anything derived from it, ever again.
43AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:50
This isn't finishing before the readers die, is it.
59AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:54
Re: #43
I bet an AI Togashi finishes it before the real Togashi does. Honestly I think that's the joke Togashi himself is making in the manga — getting 'Laplace'd' (a nod to the manga's own predictive 'Laplace's Demon' ability).
50AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:53
And it's not just this time — the fact that he sets up a cliffhanger right before every hiatus shows it's deliberate, like he's planning to stop at 10 weeks from the very start. Shueisha seriously needs to rein him in and get him in line for once. Just cancel it — someone with this little motivation deserves it. He literally drew the 'rotten mikan theory' in his own story.
68AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:55
Re: #50
Who in the world is dumb enough to cancel a series that sells millions of tankobon copies the second it drops, lol?
57AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:54
Hisoka's such a wild character. I'd buy literally anything from him at this point — I wouldn't even be surprised if next chapter he busted out some one-off gag he'd apparently been workshopping for years, right in front of everyone. He's a character you'd think you could predict, but you just can't.
94AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:01
Re: #57
He's blatantly a ripoff of Killvern from Dai no Daibouken (Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai), no matter how you look at it.
88AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:00
Kishimoto, who finished Naruto without any major hiatuses, and Araki, who's diligently bringing JoJo to a proper close — those guys are great. Togashi and Inoue are just irresponsible. Finish Vagabond already 💩
113AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:05
Re: #88
Well, Inoue's got Real going too, though.
119AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:07
His need for validation doesn't match his output.
137AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:11
Re: #119
I think a big part of why he shares his progress like that is to back himself into a corner — like, 'well, I already announced it, so now I have to actually do it.'
129AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:09
He's clearly got no intention of writing anything after they reach the Dark Continent at this point.
144AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:12
Re: #129
I feel like once things wrap up with Kurapika and the Troupe, it'll hit a natural stopping point and he might just end it there. Though he could've ended it back at Greed Island once Gon achieved his goal, and kept going anyway — so I have a feeling he'll keep going even past this too.
151AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:14
Re: #129
What the old men saw pretty much covers everything, doesn't it. Even the Calamity thing is just flavor text — he's not planning to actually solve that mystery.
136AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:10
'I'll work about one volume's worth a year' — honestly that'd still be an improvement. Just move to a monthly magazine already.
142AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:12
Re: #136
It's turned out this way because the editors won't let go of him and won't let it end.
147AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:13
This manga effectively already ended with the father-son reunion. What's running now is just a bonus epilogue.
157AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:16
Re: #147
A lot of people don't get this. It's a classic Jump pattern — the author would be fine ending it, but the editors won't let it go.
156AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:15
You'd have to be out of your mind to keep up with both One Piece and Hunter x Hunter. I hit my limit at Ace's death and the Hunter Exam.
176AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:22
Re: #156
Say what you want, but it's still a masterpiece even after the Hunter Exam — Yorknew, Greed Island, the Chimera Ant arc. Personally I liked the Election arc too. The stuff with Killua's family is great as well — there's not a single bad arc in it.
180AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:24
Re: #156
As for One Piece, I never understood the 'Pegabank' arc (likely a garbled or slang reference to a specific arc name).
159AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:16
Togashi's still fine since his hiatuses actually make news. The truly scary ones are the series on permanent hiatus that don't even get talked about anymore.
Saki — on hiatus more than half of every year, 20 years in with no end in sight.
Kenka Shoubai — serialization's been stopped for 6 years now.
And then there's the legend-tier Vagabond and Bastard!!, both well past 10 years since their last chapter.
165AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:18
Re: #159
Historie comes up now and then too. I hear it's good, but I heard the author basically told people outright to give up on it ever being finished, so I haven't picked it up.
183AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:26
Re: #159
Vagabond gets singled out a lot in these conversations, but it actually quietly got 'finished' through an Inoue-held Vagabond exhibition and an accompanying booklet — though it's not an ending anyone could really accept.

Background and key points of debate

Togashi Yoshihiro is an author known for repeatedly going on hiatus, anywhere from a few weeks to several years at a stretch, and this pattern of “ten weeks of chapters, then another hiatus” has essentially become the norm at this point. Commenters on the thread floated the idea that his workflow follows a cycle tied to finishing one tankobon volume at a time — serializing chapters until a volume’s worth is complete, then focusing on the volume release and writing the next batch before publishing again. The debate centered on whether to view this hiatus-heavy style as “irresponsible” or as “still better than nothing, at least he’s drawing.” For comparison, posters brought up Inoue Takehiko’s Vagabond (on hiatus for over 10 years), as well as Kishimoto Masashi’s Naruto and Araki Hirohiko’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, both of which reached clear, definitive endings. One post claiming “the author wants to wrap it up but the editors won’t let him” also circulated, but that’s reader speculation rather than confirmed fact, so it shouldn’t be taken at face value.
