The story

At the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival, “Kappo Komeo” — the restaurant run by Komeo (a former BreakingDown fighter) — served “chilled crab ramen,” and a food poisoning outbreak followed the August 22–23 event. As of September 3, 78 people had reported feeling unwell, and the restaurant was hit with a seven-day business suspension order. On September 6, 2026, free-diving fisherman YouTuber Masaru voiced his criticism on X, saying “Honestly, I’m pretty furious.” On 5channel threads, many voiced concerns about lax hygiene management, while opinions on Komeo himself were split — some questioned whether critics had the standing to criticize, and others pushed back against those defending him.

Even after all those precautions, if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen

In response, I'm gonna open a free-diving ramen stand

Right on cue, another attention-grabber jumps in to get their two cents in ("icchou-gami" — someone butting into a hot topic for clout)

Re: #7 People in the food industry have every right to say something
8AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:13
I get what he's saying, but Masaru himself has been hit with pufferfish toxin and ciguatera poisoning from eating weird stuff for views, so he should take a bit better care of himself too
10AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:17
That's not a "challenge" — that's just proper hygiene management you're skipping
11AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:17
Anyone can cook, even an idiot.
But an idiot can't handle hygiene management.

That's why chefs spend years training.

Re: #11
The "food hygiene supervisor" certification can be gotten just by sitting through a one-day (6-hour) training course lol
13AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:19
Guess he hit it big as a YouTuber and turned into a businessman
15AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:20
Hygiene management isn't just about how much money you throw at it —
mindset is what really matters.
You need to doubt, doubt, and doubt again;
raw and chilled food is genuinely hard to get right.
18AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:21
The second there's someone to pin the blame on, everyone piles right in —
but this guy's no saint either
20AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:22
Re: #16
Well, if you do a full 360, you end up right back where you started — nothing's actually changed lol
21AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:23
Serving raw, uncooked food outdoors in this kind of weather in the first place shows he wasn't taking the job seriously
22AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:24
Aren't YouTubers supposed to be on his side?
25AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:26
Re: #17
This is the first Plesiomonas bacteria detection in a Tokyo food poisoning case in 24 years —
guess he gets to be the 4th such case nationwide?
30AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:31
Re: #25
"Naru" (to become) is usually used for positive achievements, so Kanio hasn't really "become" anything (wordplay on Komeo's name blended with "kani," meaning crab)
26AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:27
You're secretly on the side of the crowd bashing Komeo, aren't you?
I see right through you (o^O^)シ彡☆
32AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:32
He's selling tuna tataki at less than half price —
is he even turning a profit?
33AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:32
If this happens again down the road, this comment's gonna get thrown right back in his face and he'll get roasted for it lol
34AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:33
This guy's actually pretty famous, right?
Didn't he get beaten up badly a while back and had his nose fixed after it got busted up?
68AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:17
Re: #34
Maybe he refused to get pulled into organized crime?
Sounds like a genuinely upstanding guy
35AnonymousSep 7, 2026 14:33
Not disclosing what actually caused it just lets the reputational damage spread further —
given all this, he probably shouldn't be in the food business anymore
66AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:13
Re: #35
Thinking about it rationally, since the number of victims kept climbing,
they must have been reusing something.
That means the pathogen count kept building up.
And yet they insist "nothing like that happened!"
Even if management did give the right instructions,
it means someone down the chain failed to follow them.
Either the people at the top are incompetent, the people at the bottom are,
or both.
59AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:03
Masaru gets tangled up with sketchy people, but he's actually serious about his work

69AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:17
This gave crab a bad image too, honestly
74AnonymousSep 7, 2026 15:23
Re: #69
It'd be great if he showed how he actually processes the crab.
Traditional trades are learned by watching,
and that's exactly what makes YouTube so good for this.
Under old-school apprenticeships you have to squeeze in learning
between chores —
"watch and learn, steal the technique, don't ask questions!"
and then if you mess up, it's "why didn't you just ask?!"
YouTube cuts out all that wasted friction.
Kids who are good at learning by observation can pick it up there instead.

Background and key points of this story

The “food hygiene supervisor” qualification can be earned with roughly a single day of training, so holding the certificate doesn’t necessarily reflect the real state of hygiene management on-site. Commenters in the thread picked up on exactly this, with many arguing the real problem wasn’t a lack of credentials but practical issues — temperature control and ingredient sourcing — when serving raw and chilled dishes at an outdoor festival. At the same time, Masaru himself reportedly has his own history of falling ill from unusual foods, and some pointed out that critics aren’t necessarily in a position to talk either, so this hasn’t become a simple, one-sided pile-on. The Azabu-Juban Summer Festival is one of Tokyo’s biggest summer festivals, packed with food stalls every year, and a food poisoning outbreak affecting this many people is unusual — attention is now likely to turn to how stall screening and public health authorities respond going forward.
