  • Osaka Rents Skyrocket, Old Danchi Housing Estates Get a Second Look — 5ch: “They Even Had Shopping Streets and Clinics Built Right In”

News that rents for family-sized rental apartments in Osaka City have climbed to an average of ¥170,000 a month — the highest level in the Kansai region — made the rounds on 5ch. When the thread highlighted a family of five who sold their house and moved into a danchi (a public/semi-public housing estate), commenters piled in with their own experiences: “There was even a shopping street, a clinic, and a pool right on the grounds,” and “Some danchi have had elevators retrofitted.”

At the same time, others raised concerns about aging pipes, noise, and the buildings’ structural lifespan, making for a thread that covered both the perks and the pitfalls of danchi living.

But the thing about danchi is a lot of them don't have elevators.

If it's an old-design danchi, once you factor in eventual demolition, you probably can't live there another 10 years.

I've lived in a renovated old danchi, and the room itself was fine.

The problem is the bathroom and toilet — structurally, you can't change them. The type where the bath drains into a canal-like groove cut into the floor is the worst.
It gets slimy right away, and just knowing dirty water is running through there is gross.

And then there's that fat toilet pipe — you can hear the poop from the floor above falling down it.

If none of that bothers you, it's fine though.

There's no dedicated pipe space, so the drain stack runs right through the room. A bare steel pipe with no soundproofing wrapped around it is the worst.

There's just something great about a shopping street being right inside the danchi grounds.
There was a post office, a clinic, a park too —
you could handle basically all of daily life without ever leaving the property.
There was even a kids' pool on-site, managed by the danchi itself.

Granted, a lot of these places needed a bus ride to reach the train station.
But with the aging population and falling birthrate, the shopping street ended up all shuttered.

    Re: #6
Being a data center doesn't automatically make it earthquake-resistant, but normally you'd pick a low-seismicity area and build with earthquake resistance in mind as standard practice.
Of course that costs a lot of money, so this doesn't necessarily apply to data centers built by cash-strapped companies.

Apparently it's set to start operating sometime after fiscal 2030.
If you spread ¥2 trillion over 10 years and divide by day, that's about ¥5.5 billion a day.
If 1% of that is construction-related labor costs, that's ¥55 million a day.
During construction, the area should see a boom from construction workers and the businesses catering to them.
    31AnonymousAug 20, 2026 10:14
    Re: #9
At ¥50,000 per person per day, that'd be 1,100 workers?
There's no way a ¥2 trillion facility only employs 1,100 people, so I'd guess the daily labor cost is actually in the hundreds of millions of yen.
If they really build this data center, the area's going to be booming.
Azabudai Hills construction (total project cost ¥640 billion) had up to 5,000 workers on site per day.
    10AnonymousAug 18, 2026 02:00
It's probably already in the plan somewhere, but if you're bringing in ¥2 trillion worth of materials over (an assumed) 10 years, there's no way local sourcing can cover it.
So let me just rough out a list — feel free to poke holes in it.

Land transport: upgrading high-grade roads — national and prefectural government?
Sea transport: expanding, dredging, unloading facilities — national government, prefecture, and shipping companies?
Air transport: airports and heliports/eVTOL landing pads around Akita — prefectural government?
    Material storage yards
    Fuel storage yards

First-aid facilities for the injured and sick, and transport methods to nearby major hospitals with inpatient care

    Power:
Akita apparently has surplus power, so that should be fine.

    Property tax:
Probably a nice windfall, but the facility surely won't last 100 years.

    24AnonymousAug 18, 2026 14:39
Data centers guzzle power and water while barely creating jobs, and if the materials used inside are imported from overseas, not much money actually circulates locally.

So they really need to pay their fair share in taxes, or the domestic economy could end up worse off.

But big companies love to talk 'tax optimization' — pretending not to turn a profit, or parking their headquarters somewhere else to dodge paying taxes.

If that isn't sorted out too, we could end up with the punchline being that land and water — the most basic resources of all — just dry up.
    25AnonymousAug 19, 2026 11:23

What's being built is called the Northern District Renewable Energy Industrial Park — a stretch along the coast lined with wind turbines.
I doubt wind alone can cover all the AI center's power needs, but there's apparently a thermal power plant nearby too, so it'll probably work out somehow.
Primary cooling aside, secondary cooling will likely use seawater.

    28AnonymousAug 19, 2026 19:33
I'm starting to think maybe these shouldn't be built domestically at all — we need to check whether there's any weather-to-crust impact (like triggering earthquakes).
    29AnonymousAug 19, 2026 20:24
Feels like this'll get pitched to rural areas bundled together with a nuclear plant.
    30AnonymousAug 20, 2026 02:24
Since offshore power fizzled out, if we're doing this, let's just build a nuclear plant in Akita too.
While we're at it, since Aomori's waste processing sites are getting maxed out, put those in Akita as well.
If that's the direction we're steering, honestly, why not?
Hand over the land and environment, take on the risk, and get the economy moving.
    32AnonymousAug 20, 2026 11:20
Data centers don't create jobs — they run automatically.

Even a facility worth hundreds of billions of yen can be run by a few dozen people. At ¥2 trillion, maybe it's still only around 100 people.

Water and infrastructure development costs fall on the local government, so honestly they'd better be paying serious property tax or it just doesn't add up.

They generate huge amounts of heat (hell for anyone downwind), consume massive amounts of water (which can wipe out agriculture in areas already short on water), and consume massive amounts of electricity (in Iceland or somewhere, residents have reportedly been forced into planned blackouts because of data centers).

It's not as simple as just inviting them in. But since companies pull all sorts of tricks to dodge taxes, if we lose that fight, we could easily end up in an exploitative situation.
    34AnonymousAug 20, 2026 11:50
    Re: #32
There's no way a data center's heat raises the outside air temperature.
If that actually raised the temperature, then areas downwind of power plants, incinerators, and steel mills — which put out way more heat than any data center — should already be in brutal heat waves.
    36AnonymousAug 20, 2026 12:16
    Re: #34
A ¥2 trillion data center, up to 500MW.

That's the energy consumption of about 1 million households — 2 to 3 million people (based on Japan's power usage figures).

By around 2030, global AI water consumption is projected at 9 trillion liters — enough for 1.3 billion people.

That's what people mean when they say water and electricity will run dry in the AI era. And the more water and electricity you use, the more you drain the land.

Worst case, we end up like parts of Africa — once both water and land are depleted, the whole basis of the economy collapses. Water and nature are the most fundamental foundation of any economy.

That's exactly why, when attracting AI data centers, whether it drains the land becomes the critical question.
    33AnonymousAug 20, 2026 11:38
It's not perfectly proportional, but a rough rule of thumb is about 1 employee per megawatt (not counting rotating contractor staff).

    For a 500-megawatt facility, that'd be around 500 employees.
    35AnonymousAug 20, 2026 12:06
If this data center ends up consuming power at the gigawatt scale, that's literally the output of a single nuclear reactor — which could eventually turn into an excuse to bring a nuclear plant into the neighborhood, citing power needs.
    38AnonymousAug 20, 2026 12:34
If you bring in a data center and just leave it unchecked, things could get bad fast. The pattern of land drying up, like what's happening in America, could easily happen here too.

Protecting nature — really, preserving the ecosystem's cycle — becomes the actual job.
    39AnonymousAug 20, 2026 12:45
It's kind of like a nuclear plant, but I guess it's a bit better since it doesn't produce radioactive waste with nowhere to go.

Toyonaka-based bookstore chain “Tamura Shoten,” a long-established Osaka institution, has been placed into special liquidation by the Osaka District Court, with total debts as of its fiscal year ending May 2023 reaching ¥1.459 billion. The thread was full of laments over the shift to e-books and online retailers, but some commenters pointed out that the chain’s 8 main stores had actually been transferred to a different company back in November 2024 and are still operating — meaning the stores being liquidated now were just the unprofitable ones.

  • Hydrogen Successfully Transported at Room Temperature and Pressure — 5ch: ‘Does This Mean It’s Exempt from Regulations?’

The University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, Aisin, and battery storage startup ARM Technologies announced they succeeded in a demonstration experiment transporting hydrogen at room temperature and normal pressure, using a liquid mixed with hydrogen-absorbing alloy powder.

On 5ch, some were surprised the method falls outside regulations for high-pressure gas and hazardous materials, while others questioned its efficiency (“if it can’t exceed what the absorbing alloy itself can hold, the transportable amount must be tiny”), and discussion also turned to the cost of producing the hydrogen itself, whether via nuclear power or solar.

The University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, battery storage startup ARM Technologies (Sagamihara City), and Aisin announced they succeeded in a demonstration experiment with a liquid capable of transporting hydrogen at room temperature and normal pressure.

Hydrogen generated from solar panel electricity was stored in a special liquid, which could then be safely transported.

React it with oxygen in the air and it becomes a stable liquid at room temperature and pressure, so it's easier to transport.

I was like 'is this really safe?' so I looked it up, and turns out it's exempt from regulation:
・Liquid state at room temp and pressure
    ・Water-based and non-flammable
・Not classified as high-pressure gas, hazardous material, or deleterious substance
    18AnonymousAug 23, 2026 09:27
    Re: #4
Nah, there's no regulation because the technology didn't exist yet — if it turns out this could fill a tunnel with hydrogen or something dangerous, they'll just amend the law, right?
    5AnonymousAug 23, 2026 06:43
It'd be great if extracting the hydrogen doesn't take much energy.
The issue is that the liquid itself becomes a huge dead weight, but handling gets easier and costs go down, so the question is how much that offsets it.
    26AnonymousAug 23, 2026 12:11
    Re: #5
If room temp/pressure works, you could use water pipes for short-to-medium distances.
Build large storage facilities, ship it in bulk by tanker, then supply it via pipe to the actual point of use — that should cut transport costs a lot.

Kind of like how city gas works.
    6AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:07
Japan should just go all-in on hydrogen engines.
    7AnonymousAug 23, 2026 08:22

If we could store surplus daytime solar power as hydrogen, it'd pay off easily.
Right now there's no way to store it, so some operators are actually told to stop generating more power during the day.
It'd be great if they could just store the excess instead.

If we started using it at the same scale as gasoline today, that wouldn't be nearly enough.
    13AnonymousAug 23, 2026 09:07
Saw in another article there's tech to turn hydrogen into a sponge-like solid for transport.
Pour water on it and it releases hydrogen that can power a car.
    15AnonymousAug 23, 2026 09:18
So it's an application of hydrogen-absorbing alloys?
Once you've extracted the hydrogen from the liquid with the dissolved powder, can you actually get the leftover material back out of an FCEV or hydrogen engine car's tank cleanly?
    16AnonymousAug 23, 2026 09:18
There's no info at all on what volume/capacity you could actually transport this way.
If you carry it as a normal-pressure gas instead of high-pressure gas, you wouldn't need reinforced containers, right?
Though there'd still be a fire risk.
    20AnonymousAug 23, 2026 09:53

    >Battery storage startup ARM Technologies (Sagamihara City)

I was wondering why a battery startup was doing something unrelated to batteries, but I guess it's a battery that uses this liquid.

    But then —

    >The liquid used in the experiment was made by powdering a 'hydrogen-absorbing alloy,' which stores hydrogen by adsorbing it onto metal, and dispersing it in the liquid

    — that's not exceeding the performance of hydrogen-absorbing alloys, so at normal pressure the amount of hydrogen it can actually hold would be tiny. Isn't this pointless?
    25AnonymousAug 23, 2026 12:05

The table linked in Re: #21 doesn't even compare that either — even though MCH (methylcyclohexane, a common liquid hydrogen carrier) has a much lower specific gravity.
    33AnonymousAug 23, 2026 12:40
Hydrogen's light, so why not just stuff it into a big balloon and float it through the sky?
    34AnonymousAug 23, 2026 12:40
If it's only a tiny amount, there's no point, and for mass transport, liquefying it would be better.
For fixed-point delivery, city gas pipelines are already enough.
I just can't picture the actual use case.
    38AnonymousAug 23, 2026 13:10

    40AnonymousAug 23, 2026 14:57
They use hydrogen-absorbing alloy as a battery electrode and dip it in liquid to generate electricity, so I guess the idea is: just mix it into the liquid and transport it as liquid from the start.
    41AnonymousAug 23, 2026 15:10
They crush the hydrogen-absorbing alloy, mix it with an electrolyte into a paste-like liquid, and transport that — energy density is apparently around 300Wh/L.
    45AnonymousAug 23, 2026 18:14
Come to think of it, you don't hear about hydrogen-absorbing alloys much anymore.
    46AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:19
    Re: #45
Uh, this IS a hydrogen-absorbing alloy though.
    47AnonymousAug 23, 2026 19:32
There's stuff like putting hydrogen-absorbing alloy in a ~10-atmosphere tank to make a space-saving hydrogen tank.
Things like that use hydrogen-absorbing alloy as a component, but nowadays the goal is practical implementation as a more user-friendly system, so it doesn't come up as a topic on its own anymore.
    49AnonymousAug 23, 2026 20:38
    Re: #47
Using a hydrogen-absorbing alloy that works at room temperature and pressure instead of a 10-atmosphere tank is exactly what nickel-metal hydride batteries — like Sanyo's Eneloop — do.

  • Sato Ma-chan’s Sweet Potato Curry Sparks Fierce 5ch Debate

Morning Musume’s Sato Ma-chan sparked a heated debate on 5ch after making curry with sweet potato instead of the usual potato, using a recipe she learned from fellow member Hattori-kun.

Swapping in a sweet ingredient for potato drew criticism from some (“heresy,” “it’s just like pineapple in sweet and sour pork”), while plenty of others defended the choice (“surprisingly works,” “we always put it in too”). The thread eventually spiraled into discussions of sweet potato potato salad and takikomi gohan (seasoned mixed rice).

    That's heresy…

  • Ai Takahashi: ‘Maybe I’ll Have the 18th Gen Call Me Ai-chan’

Morning Musume. OG Ai Takahashi’s comment that she wants the 18th-generation members — who joined after she graduated — to call her “Ai-chan” has become a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread dug up an old episode where 9th-gen member Erina Ikuta once called her “Ai-chan” and got scolded by a manager for it, sparking a lively debate over who’s allowed to use the “Ai-chan” nickname and who’s stuck with the more formal “Takahashi-san.”

    9AnonymousAug 22, 2026 01:45
Up through around the 15th gen it'd feel too intimidating,
but Takahashi's old aura probably doesn't hold much sway over the 18th-gen crowd, so they'd probably just call her "Ai-chan" without thinking twice
Though Oda might be schooling the 18th gen on who Takahashi even is

  • PC Prices Skyrocket: ‘You Need ¥300,000 Just to Get a Decent One,’ Users Say, Blaming Memory and CPU Hikes

A thread on 5ch posed the question, “Do you really need ¥300,000 these days just to buy a decent computer?” — sparking debate over soaring prices for memory, CPUs, and even USB flash drives.

Some argued that ¥100,000-something is plenty if you’re not gaming, while others countered that ¥300,000 is the real floor if you want to run AI workloads or just want a smooth experience. The discussion ranged widely, touching on the weak yen, real-world prices at retailer Dospara, and used off-lease corporate PCs as a budget option.

Just get by with a tablet plus a physical keyboard.
    15AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:15
Well, even before Windows 95, a PC that actually worked properly started around ¥300,000, so just think of it as going back to the old days.
    16AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:16
You need at least 8GB of RAM minimum, or your browser alone will max it out.
    18AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:17
PC prices have gotten so bad that Microsoft, on top of extending Win10 support, is also working hard to make Win11 usable with just 8GB of RAM. Fitting, since Microsoft — busy building data centers — is part of the reason semiconductor prices spiked in the first place.
    20AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:18
    Re: #18
They should've just done that from the start, honestly. Why's the OS itself hogging so much memory before you've even started working?
    22AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:19
Thanks to the memory price hikes, a decent laptop that'll last you a few years now starts around ¥200,000. And that's with no GPU — just an 8-core-ish CPU, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD.
    24AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:20
These days you're probably better off with a tablet plus a keyboard and mouse.
    25AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:22
Want to replace my desktop with a BTO or custom build, but memory's roughly 3x the price now… what do I even do.
    26AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:22
Did you know USB flash drives have shot up in price too? Ones that used to be under ¥2,000 are now almost ¥6,000.
    31AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:26
If you can somehow sort out the memory with used parts, you could probably build something decent for around ¥100,000, but it really comes down to which graphics card you go with. Depends what you want to do with it.
    32AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:27
Just hop between used off-lease corporate PCs.
    33AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:27
You have to allocate memory to the integrated GPU too, so you'll want at least 16GB. Even the PS5 has 16GB. With 32GB you can do pretty much anything without stress.
    35AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:28
Back in the day you could gauge performance roughly from the Pentium number, but I have no clue with CPUs these days.
    36AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:29
There's a huge price gap between 16GB and 32GB of RAM.
    37AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:30
The DDR5 32GB kit I bought on sale for ¥6,000 about a year and a half ago is going for around ¥80,000 now.
    38AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:30
Well, I don't really use a PC for work anymore anyway, so it's fine by me — a smartphone covers most things. Still, I can't forgive whoever steered us into this excessive yen depreciation.
    39AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:32
PCs have gotten more expensive, but I don't feel like performance has actually gone up to match.
    40AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:32
If you're running AI stuff at home, you really do want a solid GPU and lots of memory, so I get why prices are up.
    41AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:32
If you're not playing the newest games, ¥100,000 should do it.
    43AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:35
Got a refurbished Let's Note off Amazon for under ¥50,000 and it runs great.
    44AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:37
At Dospara you're looking at ¥180,000 plus ¥50,000-60,000 for an external GPU, and you're set.
    45AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:38
Dospara's probably the cheapest — under ¥150,000 if 16GB of RAM is enough for you.
    50AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:42
Memory prices have calmed down a bit compared to a while back, but now everyone's started hiking CPU prices instead. You can make do on memory by going DDR4 or even DDR3 worst case, but storage prices climbing too is kind of a pain. Probably safest to grab something used from a place like PC Konfuru and just buy whatever extra performance you actually need.
    52AnonymousAug 18, 2026 19:46
