  • Anthropic’s IPO Prospectus Explicitly Warns of “AI Extinction Risk to Humanity” — 5ch Reacts: “Just Unplug It”

AI developer Anthropic has warned investors in its IPO prospectus that AI could pose “catastrophic and existential risks” to humanity, according to documents obtained by Reuters. The disclosure stands out because it comes from a company that has built its reputation on prioritizing safety, now spelling out such risks in a formal investor filing. On 5ch, threads mixed skepticism about the company’s motives — “do they actually believe this?” and “isn’t this just to get regulations passed that favor them?” — with more concrete debate over what might actually happen if AI went rogue.

    Background and Key Points

The “risk factors” section of an IPO prospectus is a section U.S. securities practice requires companies to use for comprehensively disclosing possible future adverse events, in order to protect investors — even tech companies routinely list a wide range of risks there, from litigation to regulatory change. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI executives around a safety-first mission, so it isn’t new for the company to bring up “existential risk to humanity”; what makes this news is that the warning has now been written into a formal, legally binding document aimed at investors. On the thread, opinions split between those taking the warning at face value and those suspicious it’s meant to nudge regulators into cracking down harder on competitors. Stories about AI agents briefly slipping out of control also came up, but none of it was backed by verified sourcing — it was all hearsay.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[AI] Anthropic warns of AI “existential risk to humanity” in IPO prospectus.”

  • Foreign ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ visa holders hit record 440,000 — 5ch reacts: ‘Low-wage slaves’

On September 29, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency announced that the number of foreign nationals residing in Japan under the “Specified Skilled Worker” visa status reached a record 444,256 as of the end of June 2026. That’s up 13.8% from the end of 2025, six months earlier, with the advanced “Type 2” category surging 2.3-fold to 18,295 people. Because Type 2 has no cap on renewals and allows family members to accompany the worker, threads on 5ch raised the question of whether this amounts to de facto immigration. While some see it as a necessary fix for labor shortages, others questioned working conditions using the phrase “low-wage slaves,” criticized lax entry screening, or proposed taxing companies that hire foreign workers, Singapore-style.

That’s a 13.8% increase from six months earlier, at the end of 2025. Of these, the “Type 2” category, which requires advanced skills, rose 2.3-fold to 18,295 people.

Bringing in foreigners is fine, but raise the bar and tighten up entry screening.
It makes no sense that people showing up saying 'Nihongo wakarimasen!' (I don't understand Japanese!) are getting approved.
There's no way you can work in a foreign country without speaking the language.

Even Australia, which used to be super lax, has gotten really strict on foreigners now — Japan's the only one still wide open.

They should make companies put up a deposit against the risk of a foreign worker disappearing — forfeited if the worker runs off.

So I guess any increase from here on counts as Takaichi's achievement, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Specified Skilled Worker” status was created in 2019 to address labor shortages, covering 14 designated fields including nursing care and construction. Unlike the Technical Intern Training Program, which is officially framed around skills transfer, this system is explicitly designed with securing labor as its stated purpose — though the two are often confused with each other. The “Type 2” category that surged this time has no cap on visa renewals and allows family members to accompany the worker, giving it a character close to de facto permanent residency or immigration. The government maintains that this is “not an immigration policy,” and the gap between that stated position and the reality on the ground is likely to remain a point of contention going forward. Opinions in the thread split into three camps: a pragmatic view that this fills labor shortages, concern over reliance on low-wage labor, and calls to tighten entry screening — painting a picture too complex for a simple for-or-against framing.

  • Tamagawa Toru Sparks Controversy: ‘The Reason We’re Happy About Medals Is Because We’re Losing to China in GDP’

Toru Tamagawa, a former TV Asahi employee turned TV commentator, remarked on a news program broadcast September 29 that Japan’s medal haul at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi/Nagoya reflects the fact that “the reason people are happy about winning gold medals is that Japan is losing to China in GDP.” When the remark was posted on 5channel’s “Nandemo Jikkyo” (Live Commentary) board, the thread split between support and criticism. While many criticized him, asking whether he could say the same thing to the athletes’ faces, others sympathized with the point itself, saying things like “he’s just describing the psychology of the viewers” and “it’s true that developing countries get more excited about gold medals.” The discussion expanded from there into questions about the value of medals and the Asian Games’ own lack of name recognition.

Toru Tamagawa, a former TV Asahi employee, appeared on September 29 on the news program “Hatori Shinichi Morning Show” (TV Asahi group), where he serves as a commentator, and shared his personal opinion on the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi/Nagoya.

The biggest highlight was the Puyo Puyo gold medal.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Toru Tamagawa is a flagship commentator on TV Asahi’s “Hatori Shinichi Morning Show,” known for frequently making headlines with contrarian takes on current events. This year’s Asian Games are being held on home turf in Aichi/Nagoya, but domestic interest has been noted as low, with visibly empty seats in the stands — a point echoed in the thread, with comments like “the Asian Games themselves have low name recognition” and “nothing gets people excited except table tennis.” China has far outpaced host nation Japan in gold medal count, and Tamagawa’s framing — mapping the gap in economic power onto a country-versus-country sporting event — connects to a broader discourse that ties medal counts at international competitions to national prestige. In the thread, the pushback centered less on whether the remark was right or wrong and more on phrasing that sounded dismissive of the athletes’ efforts, with opinions further split by people’s personal views of Tamagawa himself.

Every single person on Earth (all 8 billion) would need to pay about $700/year (¥110,000) in subscriptions for that to add up.
Well, companies could pay around $70,000 (¥10 million) per employee replaced with AI. That's one more person out of a job, though…
If you replace 100 million high-paid white-collar workers worldwide at roughly $70,000 (¥10 million) of AI spend each, the math could work out — but the middle class gets wiped out globally, and you end up with a Great Depression.

Anthropic actually turned profitable in the April–June quarter.
Quite the contrast with OpenAI, which significantly widened its losses.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This estimate was put together by US-based Bain & Company in the second half of 2025. It holds that to recoup the enormous capital being poured into the worldwide data center construction boom, AI-related businesses need to generate roughly $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031. Current AI company revenues fall far short of that figure, and while many thread commenters reacted with ‘that’s less than I expected,’ plenty of others pointed to constraints beyond mere profitability — strained power and water resources, and the risk borne by power companies that have already committed capital to expanding infrastructure for data centers. Some also noted that Anthropic turned profitable in the April–June quarter of 2025 while OpenAI’s losses widened — a lesser-known fact showing that even AI companies can have very different revenue structures.

  • Tried to Write “Ephemeral” (泡沫), Got “Splash” (飛沫) and “Millet-Pine” (粟松) Instead — 5ch: “This Is Basically a Comedy Skit”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Hardware & Industry (“Geha”) board about a poster who meant to type “ephemeral” (泡沫, houmatsu) but had it autocorrect to “splash” (飛沫, himatsu) instead — then, trying to fix the mistake, mistyped it again into the nonsense word “millet pine” (粟松, awamatsu). Adding insult to injury, another user misread that “粟松” as “chestnut pine” (栗松, kurimatsu), triggering a chain of three separate typos in a row. While the thread erupted in laughter with comments like “this is basically a comedy skit at this point,” some posters singled out the original poster for ridicule, others speculated the errors came from voice-to-text input, and the back-and-forth mockery kept going for a while.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“泡沫” is properly read as “houmatsu” — the reading “awamatsu” doesn’t actually exist. It appears the original poster attempted the conversion without knowing the correct reading, mistyping what should have been “himatsu” as “飛沫” (splash), then, while trying to correct it, mis-converted “awamatsu” into “粟松” (millet pine) as well. On the Gaming Hardware board, minor typos and conversion errors like this are frequently mocked as evidence of the poster’s own ignorance, and this thread is a textbook example of that pattern. It’s also worth noting that the phrase “書き田中った” (“wrote-it-Tanaka’d”) isn’t a reference to any specific person — it’s simply wordplay poking fun at the mis-conversion itself.

Sasuke always came off as just a straight-up unhinged character to me, never got why he was so popular.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

A notable feature of this announcement is that it’s being made at an overseas event, New York Comic Con — in recent years, more and more popular titles like “ONE PIECE” and “Dragon Ball” have timed their new information reveals to overseas events. The original article only mentions a “brand-new anime,” without clarifying whether it centers on Naruto himself, adapts manga material that hasn’t been animated yet, or tells an entirely new story. The thread also raised the question of whether this is really about Naruto rather than his son Boruto — that will have to wait for more details on October 10. Many commenters claimed Naruto is “more popular overseas,” but it’s worth noting this is based on personal impressions rather than any concrete sales or viewership figures presented in the thread.

  • Toyama City Faces Population-Padding Scandal, Ministry Launches On-Site Inspection — 5ch: “Just to Save Face?”

In Toyama City’s national census, suspicion has emerged that city officials treated households the census takers had struck off — for having no actual residents — as “existing,” without any basis. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications views this as an inflation of the population count and has launched an on-site investigation; media outlets have also reportedly received a tip alleging similar padding occurred in the census five years ago. On the forum, opinions were split over whether the motive for the padding was to boost local allocation tax grants, or to protect the 400,000-population threshold required for core city status, and over whether the Ministry or Toyama City bears the responsibility.

Regarding the over-reporting in Toyama City’s national census, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has indicated “there is suspicion the population was padded.” It states that households which census takers had struck off for having no actual residents were treated by city officials as existing, without any basis.

The population share probably weighs heavily in the local allocation tax grant
There's a ton of subsidies that get paid out based on population ratio

A while back a municipality in Aichi Prefecture padded its count — it had about 49,800 people and inflated it by 200 to hit 50,000 so it could become a city
    167AnonymousSep 29, 2026 18:49
    Re: #13
Simply put, the grant money goes up
Someone mentioned the ratio increasing around the time of that recent news, but I can't find the source
The subsidy amount changing seems plausible though
Below is based on the resident registry count, but it's a 10-million-yen jump

    4. Self-Reliance Support Consultation Program
    Population 300,000–under 400,000: ¥40,000,000
    Population 400,000–under 500,000: ¥50,000,000

*Population here refers to the number of people recorded in the resident registry as of January 1 of the prior year in each municipality, as reported to the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications under the Ministry's "Survey on Population, Vital Statistics, and Number of Households Based on the Resident Registry."

Toyama City "over-reported" its census population — suspicion the padding was "to protect the 400,000 milestone" — Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications conducts on-site inspection — media also received a tip that "the survey five years ago was padded too"

Sure, population is the base figure used to calculate grants, but a difference of around 2,000 people doesn't feel like it would change things all that dramatically

That one had me cracking up lol
With the government shutdown, they just had zero data for an entire month — totally unchecked.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Part of the local allocation tax grant is calculated in proportion to population, so padding population figures can serve as a financial incentive for municipalities. At the same time, Toyama City’s population sits around 400,000 — well above the core city designation threshold (population of 200,000 or more) — which led some on the forum to argue that “the goal wasn’t the grant money so much as preserving the city’s standing as a core city and its subsidy allotments for businesses.” Additionally, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is responsible for compiling and publishing census results, the actual survey work is carried out by municipalities as a “statutory entrusted function,” leaving the question of where responsibility for errors lies somewhat murky under the current system. There have been past cases of a municipality in Aichi Prefecture padding its numbers to meet the population threshold for becoming a city, and of a civil servant in Higashiura Town being arrested for padding census figures — whether the Toyama City case similarly turns into a criminal matter will depend on how things develop.

    Background and Points of Discussion

Mizuta disbanded the comedy duo Wagyu with his partner Kenshiro Kawanishi in 2023 and currently works as a solo comedian. Yamamoto is a freelance newscaster who has appeared on programs including “Wa Spo × MLB”; how long the two dated or the circumstances that led to their marriage aren’t disclosed in the public statement. The announcement gives no specific reason for the divorce, so the “personality” and “abuse” theories floated on the thread should be treated as unfounded speculation, nothing more. Celebrity divorce announcements are typically limited to what the parties themselves choose to disclose, and outside speculation rarely adds anything beyond what they’ve actually stated.

A thread titled ‘I guess we’ll never see another Momochi’ popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. In the thread, posters floated names like Rosy’s Shimakawa and Kudo as potential successors, while opinions split over the kick that sparked her breakout, with some calling it ‘straight-up violence’ and others countering that ‘it was scripted and she’d agreed to it beforehand.’ The discussion also touched on Kato’s past on-screen encounter with AKB48’s Mayu Watanabe, debating whether that kind of staging was appropriate.

Yeah, what's expected now really is different from 15 years ago
Shimakawa's probably got the best shot right now — even if she is basically Batako-san (the plain, hardworking maid character from Anpanman)

What Kato once did to an AKB member sparked backlash back then too

    You mean the Mayuyu thing?
That was scripted too — Mayuyu herself asked days in advance to bring Kato in and rehearse it
She was grateful to him for it afterward

Kayo Noro was on that all-AKB Big Athletic Meet and got teased like Momochi and Ami Kikuchi were, but it didn't turn into a breakout for her at the time
Nao Asahina and Sayako Makita were on it too, but barely made the broadcast and basically faded into the background

    Searching Yahoo News right now:
    Momoko Tsugunaga: 8 results
    Ami Kikuchi: 86 (moved abroad)
Kayo Noro: 782 (4 movies this year)
    Nao Asahina: 98
    Sayako Makita: 48

    Airi Suzuki: 367

The younger members who came up alongside the Mobekimasu era have basically all graduated now, so it's ancient history from two generations back
Even the original Mobekimasu ('unconventional-looks' clique) lineup is completely gone since Ikuta graduated

A few years after that all-non-AKB Big Athletic Meet, they did a men's version too, but nobody broke out from that one
Though a while after it aired, Da-iCE — who were on it — took off, and the comedy duo New York, who were on the good-looking-guys team, started getting more work

Wasn't Chou Tokkyu on that one? Assuming this was before M!LK had even formed

    Background and Talking Points

Momoko Tsugunaga (nicknamed Momochi) is known for continuing to make her mark through physically-committed variety appearances even after leaving Morning Musume in 2014. Her breakout is said to have started with a bit in which she got kicked by Koji Kato and covered in powder — a reminder that variety TV back then tolerated far more extreme stunts than it does today. In recent years, rising compliance concerns have made that kind of physical-stunt segment much harder to pull off, so when the thread says ‘we’ll never see one again,’ it’s not just about any one person’s personality — it also reflects how much TV production styles have shifted. The thread’s mention of ‘Mobekimasu’ refers to a nickname for a group of Hello! Project members lumped together under an ‘unconventional-looks’ category at the time; since every member in that group has since graduated, the generational handover is complete, which is why posters call it ‘ancient history.’

  • Chunichi Dragons Manager Kazuki Inoue to Step Down, Takes Blame for Back-to-Back Last-Place Finishes

It has emerged that Chunichi Dragons manager Kazuki Inoue has personally told the club of his intention to resign, taking responsibility for the team’s poor performance. Chunichi finished last in the league for the second year running, and this season again saw them fall as far as 8 games off the pace. On 5ch’s live-discussion board, debate spread over possible successors, with names like coach Eichi and various Chunichi alumni floated one after another. Fans also clashed over how to judge Inoue’s management — some argued that “by the advanced stats, this team should be at .500, not buried in last place,” while others shot back that “a bullpen’s performance doesn’t always show up in the numbers.”

They cut the dead-weight contracts, brought in Ward, and set the whole thing up — so who exactly are they putting in as manager?
    23AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:08
    Re: #6
    I think it'll be Eichi.
He's got the local pipeline — Gifu Prefectural Commercial High to Meijo University, same as a lot of Chunichi guys.
    12AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:06
They clearly have the talent to be a top-three ("A-class") team, yet they've finished dead last two years running — of course this was coming.

Is there a chance this plays out like it did with 'Mr. Karai' — where they turn around and say 'not you, though' and refuse to let him leave?

Wasn't there that time back in summer when some front-office director showed up on a road trip and everyone thought 'this is it, he's finally getting fired' — but instead there was a tearful press conference about fully backing him to stay on, and it was a total anticlimax?
    Just run that play again.
    46AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:12
I mean, they've been bottom-tier ("B-class") forever — why haven't they been grooming the next manager through the farm-team job?

That's the downside of making Kataoka the farm-team manager when everyone knew he'd be gone the second Tatsunami left.
    54AnonymousSep 29, 2026 16:15
If you actually go by the stats, they should be sitting around an even .500 record — anything worse than that doesn't add up.

Probably won't happen, but I'd love to see one of the old Pacific League sluggers — guys like Nori Nakamura, Ogasawara, or Wada — take the job. They've all got Chunichi ties.

Wada was the batting coach but got let go along with Tatsunami, so that's off the table.

    No way, seriously?
Inoue rebuilt this team all the way up to Climax Series contention from '666' — why would he need to quit?
If the front office had actually reinforced the roster, they could've even fought for 2nd place this year.

If it's a dead game, treat it like one and just run out the young guys.

New Chunichi Dragons Manager: Shinji Imanaka Rumor Suddenly Surfaces — Sho Nakata Tipped as Batting Coach⚾

[Chunichi] Dark Clouds Over the Inoue Regime After 15 Straight Pennant-less Years… Escalating In-House 'Factional Feuding' and the Sudden Imanaka-Nakata Regime Proposal
    https://weekly-jitsuwa.jp/archives/24232

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Chunichi finished last in the league in both 2024 and 2025, and this season — Inoue’s third at the helm — the team again struggled to climb above .500. The thread split over how to judge his in-game management: some defended him, arguing that “by sabermetric-style stats, this team shouldn’t have a losing record at all,” while others countered that “a bullpen’s performance doesn’t always show up in the numbers” — a debate that highlights how hard it is to judge a manager when the stats and the results don’t line up. On the question of a successor, names of former coaches and Chunichi alumni kept coming up one after another, but readers should note that the Imanaka/Nakata plan reported by Weekly Jitsuwa is just one outlet’s speculative report, not an official club announcement. There’s also underlying frustration with front-office management for failing to groom a successor — for instance, former farm-team manager Atsushi Kataoka left the organization once Tatsunami (“Tatsu”) stepped down.
