  • Nadeshiko’s Semifinal Draws Only 998 Fans — 5ch: ‘Might as Well Be an Empty Stadium’

The Japan-South Korea women’s soccer semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games was held on September 29 at Ecopa Stadium in Shizuoka, with Nadeshiko Japan winning 2-0 to advance to the final. But the stadium, which holds around 50,000 people, drew a crowd of just 998. Although the match fell on a rainy weekday, the conspicuously empty stands behind the victory became a hot topic on 5ch. The thread saw comments lamenting the low turnout, observations that other Asian Games events were similarly sparsely attended, and questions about the organizers’ management and promotion efforts, sparking discussion from many angles.

The women’s soccer semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games was held on the 29th at Ecopa Stadium in Shizuoka, where the Japan women’s national team, “Nadeshiko Japan,” defeated South Korea 2-0 to reach the final. Despite the rain, it was the forlorn scene in the stands that became the talk among fans.

It was a Japan-South Korea match played in the rain, and what caught fans’ attention was the stadium’s turnout. Ecopa Stadium holds roughly 50,000 people, but between the rain and the low attendance, the venue looked sparse and desolate. Official attendance came to 998. Viewers watching the broadcast on streaming service U-NEXT voiced their disappointment online.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Asian Games is a quadrennial multi-sport event bringing together countries and regions from across Asia, with this edition hosted in Aichi-Nagoya. In the thread, commenters pointed out that low attendance wasn’t limited to women’s soccer — men’s soccer and other events were also sparsely attended — suggesting the issue lies less with women’s sports specifically and more with a broader lack of publicity and weak event management across the Games as a whole. At the same time, some pointed to unfavorable scheduling (rain, a weekday) and differences in ticket-distribution systems compared to larger events like the Olympics that involve major advertising agencies, meaning no single cause fully explains it — a point that split opinion in the thread. The 5ch reaction alone can’t reveal the actual state of promotion and publicity efforts, but the stark gap in attendance across different venues and sports has emerged as a shared issue for this year’s Games.

  • As ‘Miyaneya’ Ends, Successor Show ‘News to’ Launches — 5ch Sees ‘Déjà Vu’ in Hosts Murakami Shingo and Kuroki Chiaki

Nippon TV’s information variety show “Joho Live Miyaneya” ends on October 2, and the cast for its successor show “News to” has been announced. Hosting duties go to Murakami Shingo and announcer Kuroki Chiaki, with regulars including Kurotani Tomoka, Ishihara Nobuteru, and Anmika — many of whom carried over from Miyaneya. On 5ch, comments piled up saying “there’s no sense of renewal, it feels like déjà vu,” with some questioning the network’s seriousness and others speculating it’s a “stopgap” show ahead of a full lineup overhaul next spring. Discussion also spread to ratings comparisons with competing shows in the same time slot.

It's not that Gogo Suma is strong.
It's basically just weather, so in terms of content and amount of information it always loses to Miyaneya.

    I mean, honestly,
    do we even need commentators?
They have no real expertise, they just give their personal opinions.

    Background and Key Points

“Miyaneya” is one of Nippon TV’s flagship information shows, ending on October 2. Its successor, “News to,” was announced with Kanjani Eight’s Murakami Shingo and announcer Kuroki Chiaki as hosts, alongside a lineup heavy on holdovers from the old show, including Kurotani Tomoka, Ishihara Nobuteru, and Anmika. What split opinion on the thread was how to read this abundance of returning cast. Some saw it as a sign of a lukewarm relaunch with low ratings expectations, while others speculated it’s a one-year “stopgap” show ahead of a genuine overhaul planned for next spring. There was also a side discussion about the competing show “Gogo Suma” being strong lately in the same time slot, though some pushed back, arguing it’s mostly weather-focused and that Miyaneya actually had more substance and information — it just carried more unwanted personality, including from Miyane himself. Whether the show succeeds will come down to ratings from October 5 onward; for now, this remains just reaction to the cast announcement.

    Background and Talking Points

While Yusuke Yamamoto is best known for his role in “Kamen Rider Kabuto,” in recent years he’s been more visible through his host club work and pachinko parlor guest appearances than through acting, and the thread saw multiple comments along the lines of “he’s basically a host now, not really a celebrity.” The show where this announcement happened, “Ai no Hyena,” follows him training as a host — a very different context from his acting career, which appears to be part of why the report’s description of him as “one of showbiz’s most popular ladies’ men” didn’t quite match how the thread saw him. Details shared in the thread, like his educational background and the closure of the yakiniku restaurant he used to run, were treated as general updates on where his career stands now — with a notably level-headed, skeptical take on his current career status running underneath the otherwise upbeat marriage announcement.

    Background and Discussion Points

“Harotsu GAMES” is a YouTube series in which Hello! Project members take on video games, and this time Juice=Juice’s Sakura Ishiyama and Akari Endo joined as a pair. The featured title, “Super Bunny Man,” is a co-op platformer whose whole appeal is physics-driven controls that refuse to go the way you want — a game built around repeated failure and falling — so the commentary thread lit up with reactions like “this looks hopelessly impossible” and “it was a disaster when Yuhane tried this too.” Former group member Mizuki Murota, mentioned in the thread, once tackled the same game in the same series, and footage of that attempt is still fondly remembered today. The thread was mostly live commentary on the broadcast itself rather than a point of controversy — the game’s sheer difficulty was, by far, the biggest talking point.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “■ Sakura Ishiyama & Akari Endo ■ YouTube ‘[Harotsu GAMES] A Super Co-op Game Special for the Two of Them [Log Riders / Super Bunny Man]’ ■ 9:00 PM~ ■2.”

  • Three Kingdoms Figure Whose Story We Wish Continued Sparks Buzz — 5ch: “China Reportedly Stunned by How Much Japanese Fans Love Lü Bu”

5ch reacted to a Yahoo News article spotlighting Sima Shi — the man who inherited power from his father Sima Yi and is remembered as a “Three Kingdoms figure whose story we wish had continued, only to vanish from history.” The thread quickly veered away from Sima Shi himself, drifting into discussions of Xu Shu (who left Liu Bei’s service), Liu Shan (there’s a theory he was actually a wise ruler who merely played the fool), and how the popularity of Cao Cao and Lü Bu differs between China and Japan. Opinions were especially divided over whether it’s true that “China is apparently stunned by how much Japanese fans love Lü Bu.”

Not Cao Cao, not Zhuge Liang… Who is the #1 “Three Kingdoms figure we wish we’d seen more of”?

    9/29 (Tue) 7:21

The reason a historical figure captivates us isn’t always tied to great achievements. Sometimes it’s the “unfinished” figures — the ones who make us wonder “what might they have accomplished if they’d lived just a little longer?” — who leave the deepest impression. In the Three Kingdoms era, Sima Shi is one such figure. He inherited power from his father Sima Yi and came within a hair’s breadth of bringing the realm under Sima family rule, only to die along the way. Where does this “wish we’d seen more” feeling — one also evoked by Japan’s own Oda Nobunaga — come from? The author of “Learning World History Through Maps: A Deep-Read Approach” unpacks the little-known appeal of Sima Shi.

    Re: #254
As one of Lü Bu's subordinates, Gao Shun was more capable than Zhang Liao — if he'd lived, he probably would've risen even higher, to Grand General.

    Background and Points of Debate

Assessments of Three Kingdoms figures are said to differ sharply between the official history (Chen Shou’s “Records of the Three Kingdoms”) and the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” which treats Shu Han as the legitimate dynasty and casts Cao Cao in a somewhat villainous light. Cao Cao’s popularity in Japan is often traced to Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel and Koei’s (now Koei Tecmo’s) video games, and this gap in portrayal appears to be behind the thread’s divided reactions to the claim that “Cao Cao isn’t popular in China.” A similar gap exists for Liu Shan, between the foolish figure depicted in the Romance and the reevaluation emerging from recent historical research — the thread’s discussion of Liu Shan follows this same line. Lü Bu’s popularity may likewise be shaped by the differences between the official history, the Romance, and how he’s been received in Japan specifically.

    Background and Discussion Points

“Haro Tsuu GAMES” is a game livestream show produced by Famitsu featuring Hello! Project members, simulcast on YouTube and Niconico Douga. Concurrent viewer count is a metric showing how many people are watching a stream at once, and on 5ch it’s frequently used as a yardstick for comparing the popularity of groups or members. The figures cited in the thread — “1,561 for a popular Angerme member’s stream” and “over 5,000 for Morning Musume’s Rhythm Heaven stream” — were both numbers thread posters recalled from past broadcasts, not official statistics released by anyone, so they should be taken with a grain of salt. The claim that “the agency buys concurrent-viewer counts” is also a recurring assertion in Hello Project-related threads, but no concrete evidence has ever been presented, so its truth is unconfirmed. Ishiyama and Endo have historically ranked low in fan popularity polls, and the numbers from this stream were seized on as a point of comparison both within and outside the group.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “[Breaking] Juice=Juice’s unpopular members Sakura Ishiyama and Ayakari Endo’s minor-game livestream on “Haro Tsuu GAMES” tops 3,000 concurrent viewers!“

  • Zelda ‘Source-Hunting’ Thread Heats Up on 5ch: ‘When Nintendo Copies, It’s a Beautiful Copy’

A thread titled “Turns out the Zelda series was full of ripoffs…” on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board turned into a rundown of popular Zelda elements alongside similar features from other companies’ games. Users brought up Luigi’s Mansion vs. Ghostbusters, the towers in Wind Waker vs. the towers in Assassin’s Creed, and Splatoon vs. the reportedly unreleased “Color Wars,” among other examples, one after another. The discussion also touched on how Masahiro Sakurai has acknowledged that Ocarina of Time’s targeting system had earlier precedents. The debate that dragged on longest was whether “Z-Targeting” counts as a lock-on feature, with opinions split over how to interpret the wording of an official Nintendo interview.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Source-hunting” is a classic pastime on the Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, where the mechanics of hit games get lined up against earlier examples from other titles and stamped as “ripoffs.” This time around, multiple cases were paraded out — Luigi’s Mansion, the towers in Wind Waker, Splatoon, and more — but the thread’s biggest flashpoint was how to interpret Ocarina of Time’s “Z-Targeting.” One side reads the line from an official Nintendo interview, “you can lock on to enemies during battle to fight more effectively,” as “proof Nintendo admitted it’s a lock-on feature,” while the other side counters that it’s “just one of several purposes among many,” and the two sides remain at an impasse. Worth noting: this isn’t a dispute over new facts, but a disagreement over how to read the very same passage. It’s also worth keeping in mind that “multiple studios independently arriving at similar solutions to similar technical problems around the same time” and “deliberate imitation” are two different things — and simply listing parallels, as the thread does, can’t distinguish between the two.

  • Volleyball’s Rui Takahashi comes out as gay: ‘I thought it would go away once I turned 20’ — opens up about teenage struggles

Rui Takahashi (26), a men’s volleyball player for Suntory in Japan’s SV League, has come out as gay via his own radio show and Instagram. He revealed struggles he’d carried since his teens, recalling that at the time he’d thought, “Maybe it’ll go away once I turn 20.” Takahashi is also known as the older brother of Japan national team player Ran Takahashi. Reactions on a 5ch thread were sharply divided: some corrected the discussion by citing the WHO’s position that homosexuality is “not an illness,” others compared his announcement to past celebrity coming-outs, and still others speculated that his brother’s fame played a role in his decision to go public.

Rui Takahashi (26), older brother of Japan men’s national volleyball team player Ran Takahashi and a member of Suntory in the men’s SV League, came out as gay via his own Instagram on the 29th. He first revealed he was gay late on the night of the 28th during the MBS radio program “Rui Takahashi’s Rui’s ROOM” (Mondays, 1am), speaking in his own words about the struggles and feelings that led him to the announcement.

“Rui Takahashi’s Rui’s ROOM” is the first radio program on which Takahashi has served as main host. He opened the episode with an energetic self-introduction — “Hey everyone, I’m Rui Takahashi from Suntory Sunbirds Osaka!” — and the first half was upbeat, covering things like his commentary work at the Asian Championships and memories of elementary school talent shows.

    Re: #76
I was literally about to write the exact same thing lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Cases of active athletes in Japanese sports coming out as gay remain rare. The World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its classification of mental disorders in the 1990 revision of the ICD-10, so the very framing of being ‘cured’ or ‘not cured’ isn’t medically supported to begin with. In the thread, several posts pushed back on comments calling it an ‘illness’ by citing this fact, which highlighted a generational gap in awareness. Takahashi is also the older brother of national team player Ran Takahashi, and some posters speculated that his brother’s fame was a motivating factor behind the announcement — though it’s worth noting this is purely thread speculation, not something Takahashi himself has stated. As with the case of Ryuchell, which was brought up in the discussion, there have been other instances where a celebrity’s private coming-out to family came well before any public announcement, and that context shaped part of this discussion as well.

On 5ch, threads mixed skepticism about the company’s motives — “do they actually believe this?” and “isn’t this just to get regulations passed that favor them?” — with more concrete debate over what might actually happen if AI went rogue.

    Background and Key Points

The “risk factors” section of an IPO prospectus is a section U.S. securities practice requires companies to use for comprehensively disclosing possible future adverse events, in order to protect investors — even tech companies routinely list a wide range of risks there, from litigation to regulatory change. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI executives around a safety-first mission, so it isn’t new for the company to bring up “existential risk to humanity”; what makes this news is that the warning has now been written into a formal, legally binding document aimed at investors. On the thread, opinions split between those taking the warning at face value and those suspicious it’s meant to nudge regulators into cracking down harder on competitors. Stories about AI agents briefly slipping out of control also came up, but none of it was backed by verified sourcing — it was all hearsay.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[AI] Anthropic warns of AI “existential risk to humanity” in IPO prospectus.”

  • Foreign ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ visa holders hit record 440,000 — 5ch reacts: ‘Low-wage slaves’

On September 29, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency announced that the number of foreign nationals residing in Japan under the “Specified Skilled Worker” visa status reached a record 444,256 as of the end of June 2026. That’s up 13.8% from the end of 2025, six months earlier, with the advanced “Type 2” category surging 2.3-fold to 18,295 people. Because Type 2 has no cap on renewals and allows family members to accompany the worker, threads on 5ch raised the question of whether this amounts to de facto immigration. While some see it as a necessary fix for labor shortages, others questioned working conditions using the phrase “low-wage slaves,” criticized lax entry screening, or proposed taxing companies that hire foreign workers, Singapore-style.

The Immigration Services Agency announced on the 29th that the number of foreign nationals residing in Japan under the work-related “Specified Skilled Worker” status reached a record 444,256 as of the end of June 2026.

That’s a 13.8% increase from six months earlier, at the end of 2025. Of these, the “Type 2” category, which requires advanced skills, rose 2.3-fold to 18,295 people.

Bringing in foreigners is fine, but raise the bar and tighten up entry screening.
It makes no sense that people showing up saying 'Nihongo wakarimasen!' (I don't understand Japanese!) are getting approved.
There's no way you can work in a foreign country without speaking the language.

Even Australia, which used to be super lax, has gotten really strict on foreigners now — Japan's the only one still wide open.

Well, it's a country where 60 million workers keep voting for the LDP, a party for corporations.

    Re: #60
But it'd also be a problem if some welfare-expanding leftist party got voted in.

    Re: #60

Which party do you even vote for to reduce the number of foreigners?
    66AnonymousSep 29, 2026 19:42
27 cities/wards/towns where the foreign resident ratio has topped 10%

Why doesn't Japan tax companies for hiring foreign workers, like Singapore does?
Or is it the opposite — are they handing out subsidies instead?

    Re: #67
They should make companies put up a deposit against the risk of a foreign worker disappearing — forfeited if the worker runs off.
Companies with lots of runaways would rack up bigger costs, so the garbage companies would get weeded out.
I'm totally fine with being as strict as Singapore.

    Got rejected from a part-time job 😭
    Hire Japanese people already!

    Re: #81

Because companies get bigger subsidies for hiring foreigners lol
    114AnonymousSep 29, 2026 20:01
Seriously, demolition and construction sites have gotten absurdly full of foreign workers.
Might be great for management — cheap 'slaves' and all — but these guys aren't stupid.
One day they're going to revolt.

    Re: #114
Demolition work is apparently in a bubble right now — annual salaries of 20-30 million yen.
Even the foreign workers are clearing over 10 million yen a year.
The foreigners in Kawaguchi are even driving luxury cars.

Whoaaa! Permanent residency! World's fastest track! 😉👌

    You've all outlived your usefulness.

They did a zero-based review and just landed back on 'yeah, we actually need it.'
'Zero-based' isn't about basing things on reducing them to zero.

So I guess any increase from here on counts as Takaichi's achievement, lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The “Specified Skilled Worker” status was created in 2019 to address labor shortages, covering 14 designated fields including nursing care and construction. Unlike the Technical Intern Training Program, which is officially framed around skills transfer, this system is explicitly designed with securing labor as its stated purpose — though the two are often confused with each other. The “Type 2” category that surged this time has no cap on visa renewals and allows family members to accompany the worker, giving it a character close to de facto permanent residency or immigration. The government maintains that this is “not an immigration policy,” and the gap between that stated position and the reality on the ground is likely to remain a point of contention going forward. Opinions in the thread split into three camps: a pragmatic view that this fills labor shortages, concern over reliance on low-wage labor, and calls to tighten entry screening — painting a picture too complex for a simple for-or-against framing.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Newsplus) thread “‘Specified Skilled Worker’ foreigners hit a record 440,000 — up 13.8% from six months ago, as of end of June.”
