The story
On the October 31 broadcast of Fuji TV’s “Mikiti Dining,” former Hinatazaka46 member and MENSA member Kageyama Yuka appeared as a guest and was hit with a blunt question from Fujimoto Miki: “What do you think of dumb people?” Kageyama reportedly answered without flinching, and reactions on 5ch were split over the exchange. The main points of debate were whether the question was Fujimoto’s genuine opinion or a setup scripted by the show, and how to assess the reality of Kageyama’s academic background and credentials.

What people said
That's a pretty mean-spirited question to fixate on.
It's obviously scripted.
All the credentials she does have are pretty underwhelming too — she keeps dodging the tough exams, doesn't she?
I'm not saying she needs the hardest one, the bar exam, but she should at least get something like a judicial scrivener license or a CPA.
She didn't fail Todai, she just ran away from it.
Also, the bar exam's preliminary route is tough, but if you go the law-school route instead,
the CPA or judicial scrivener exams are probably harder — so they're not exactly a reasonable "at least" benchmark.
She never even took the Todai entrance exam.
From what I read, she was on the verge of repeating a year and barely scraped by to graduate at all.
So instead, she got into MENSA — which anyone can join — and is self-branding as some kind of "elite" talent.
MENSA is easy if you prep for it.
It's all shape/pattern puzzles, so if you memorize enough pattern types, even a middle schooler can pass.
Comparing it to real advanced qualifications is just disrespectful.
And look at Fujimoto pumping her fist, lol.
all of you ordinary people probably look like little kids to her.
But because her IQ is so high, she can handle it
without letting it show or hurting anyone's feelings.
Wait, isn't that a totally condescending, looking-down-on-you kind of answer?
It's just that I can't be around someone who's a walking inferiority complex.
Well, I'd call that a model answer.
So if she's this smart, why was she a nobody back in her idol days?
Simply because she wasn't liked by the higher-ups at her agency.
If you're in their good graces, you keep your spot in the lineup even after a scandal —
that goes for AKB and the Sakamichi groups alike.
That world is messed up.
A Todai grad student punched a taxi driver and fled just to skip out on a 1,500-yen fare.
His test scores are high, but he's clearly dumb in every other sense, right?
If you've worked in HR you'd know the lack of common sense among men from elite universities is off the charts.
Way too many of that type have done nothing but study and never learned how to build relationships with people.
It's not just once or twice that a company hires some highly-educated guy who turns out to be stalking a female coworker.
I think the same thing watching my own (highly-educated) father, honestly.
She was just putting on a little show to say "I'm not your enemy."
More than half of people are dumb.
A world that just accepts that as given —
isn't that dumb in itself?
Says me, who's barely at the top-40-percentile level myself.
Sorry if that was too much.
But the fact that the only certifications she has are vague U-CAN-correspondence-course-level ones any housewife could pick up makes me wonder if she's really all that smart.
That said, I'll give her credit for her high school alone — that part really is impressive.
If you have an environment where you can focus on studying for about two years, you can get in pretty much anywhere.
I really do think the high school alone is impressive.
Fujimoto should just join too then, lol.
I don't think they're dumb,
and that kind of forced contrarian take is embarrassing.
And then Shoji heads off to Laos alone.
Background and Points of Debate
MENSA is an intelligence test centered mainly on visual pattern recognition, with membership open to roughly the top 2% of scorers — a very different standard from specialized professional exams like the bar exam or the CPA exam. The thread split mainly into two camps: one arguing over whether Fujimoto’s question was a scripted setup or a genuinely pointed remark, and the other arguing over how to assess the reality of Kageyama’s academic background and qualifications (whether she actually sat the Todai entrance exam, and just how difficult MENSA really is). The first point isn’t something that can be verified given how variety shows are put together, and even on the second point, the thread itself contained both a correction (“she never took the Todai exam”) and a concession (“her high school entrance results deserve credit”), so it never turned into simple credential-bashing. It’s also worth noting that the article doesn’t quote Kageyama’s full answer — the line “I think people who have something I don’t have are interesting” only appears as something referenced within the reply posts themselves.
