The story
A “Favorite Songs” ranking for JUDY AND MARY — who debuted in 1993 and disbanded in 2001 — was published on October 30, and the song that took the #1 spot drew comments like “Wow, what a great song, now that I think about it” and “This genuinely takes me back to my teenage years.” On 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ thread, fans championing the respective songwriting styles of the band’s two main composers, Onda and TAKUYA, went back and forth, and the conversation even turned into an informal way of judging how long someone had really been a fan — based on how many songs besides “Sobakasu” (Freckles) they could actually name.

I used to cry so much listening to this one and Unicorn's "Okashina Futari" (The Odd Couple)~
I was into Unicorn back then too, but what part of "Okashina Futari" was even tear-jerking?
Igarashi is basically the Ringo Starr of the group.
Maybe it's only on the best-of compilation? Not that it matters much in the streaming era.
Because the school marching band played it…
Judy Mary ← honestly, it kind of gets buried, sandwiched between other acts with their own huge hits

This one. I like more of Onda's (Onchan's) songs.
It's probably because it's their breakup song, so it doesn't leave the best impression.
Things never go the way you want them to.
But yeah, they'd probably still be around, reforming every so often.
I only know "Sobakasu" myself.
Try humming "Over Drive," "Kujira" (Whale), and "Classic" back to back.
Guess that's what happens when you're not that deep into it.
You probably can't even tell the guitar and bass apart, huh?
"Iro-tori-dori no- Kujira mitai na-" (humming the "colorful, like a whale" line)
Can't pick just one.
Most of the fans from back then are probably in their graves by now anyway.
I do like "Sobakasu" though.
They really shouldn't have done that.
Weren't those fans of Onda, who already had a track record with bands?
Did TAKUYA really have that many personal fans going that far back?
Was he really that amazing?
That reminds me, there was a stretch where a commercial of this guy pitching some product kept playing on a tiny in-store monitor at an auto parts shop.
Background and Talking Points
Despite a relatively short run — debuting in 1993 and disbanding in 2001 — JUDY AND MARY was a band whose songs strongly reflected the distinct personalities of two songwriters: Onda, a member from the very start, and TAKUYA, who joined partway through. The recurring “Onda camp” vs. “TAKUYA camp” divide that kept coming up in the thread traces back to the fact that signature hits like “Sobakasu” (Freckles) and “Over Drive” are concentrated in the TAKUYA era. Meanwhile, some commenters suggested that “motto,” a song widely seen as hinting at the band’s breakup, underperformed in the ranking less because of its quality and more because of the impression left by its breakup theme itself. There was also a comment noting that the #1 song received only around 67 votes — since the ranking’s sample size and methodology depend entirely on information from the original article, this piece alone shouldn’t be taken as a definitive measure of how popular the song really is.
